Srinagar Leh Highway Status 2015

10 days of March have been passed and snow clearance operation over 434 KM long Srinagar Leh Highway are announced for the season 2015 – 16. This time snow stock is about 22 feet at Zojila and about 12 feet at Sonamarg as per the reports. The recent snowfall in March has resulted in delays in the snow clearance operations but BRO / BEACON will be trying best to resume the road connectivity from Srinagar to Leh – Ladakh and Kargil by mid-April. Srinagar – Leh Highway acts as lifeline of Kargil and Leh which remains snow bound for more than 6 months due to the snow accumulation on Zojila Pass that connects them (Kashmir – Ladakh) together. Good news is that, the snow clearance operations though delayed will be kick start soon as the weather settles and as per BEACON, it will take about 40 odd days to open the Srinagar – Leh Highway if the weather god permits 🙂 🙂 …

However, claims are made almost every year but the opening of the Zojila Pass and in turn Srinagar – Leh Highway depends upon the snowfall in the coming weeks and stabilization of highway with snowslides after cutting through the snow. But, keeping fingers crossed let’s hope that we get to connect Leh – Ladakh as soon as possible or as the BRO claims, if not by mid of April then at least by starting of May 🙂 🙂 … Please keep in mind that even when the highway gets open it needs at least couple of weeks to settle or get stabilized from initial snow sliding that happens due to quick melting of snow. So, do not rush into the highway as soon as the road is thrown open 😉 …

As per the past years, I will be starting this sticky post for status of the 434 KM long Srinagar Leh Highway Status 2014 which so many adventure lovers await every year. However, instead of updating the main article here at DoW Blog, I will keep the updated progress in the DoW Community thread for the same for better tracking of updates. A forum topic always helps in better updates tracking as well as collation of such updates in time organized manner. Hence, for all updates on Srinagar – Leh Highway after this initial post please stay tuned to the topic in DoW Community: Srinagar – Leh Highway Status 2015 | DoW Community Thread

Srinagar Leh Highway Status 2015
Srinagar Leh Highway Status 2015

Once the Srinagar – Leh road opens, I may not be that active in frequently updating the status because these roads close and open on frequent basis. It is barely impossible for a single tiny soul like me to update this information on daily basis once the road gets open, so please request you to excuse me on that front and accept my apologies :)… However, if there is some major blockade of 3 – 4 days, I will try to surely update such information about Srinagar – Leh highway status. That is another reason to keep updated to DoW Community Thread for the same.

I hope as per the last year, this year as well this article thread will be useful in planning your journey on Srinagar – Leh Highway and further to Leh – Ladakh.

Again, for all latest updates on Srinagar – Leh Highway Status 2015 after this initial post on DoW Blog, please stay tuned to the topic in DoW Community: Srinagar – Leh Highway Status 2015 | DoW Community Thread

  1. Makrand Shinde on

Hi we r a group of Friend almost six from Mumbai and want to go for a road trip by our car in the last week of this month i.e from 21 Aug 2016 – 24 Aug 2016.
What is the current situation there? Is it safe to travel through Jammu – Srinagar Highway and Srinagar – Leh Highway?
What Suggestion will you give to us?
Please let us know is it safe to Travel or we should plan an alternative route

    • No Markand, I will not suggest to travel on Srinagar – Leh Highway at least considering the situation right now. Also, just 4 days no Ladakh road trip is possible.

      • Makrand shinde on

        Thansks for your suggestions
It was only the period I was travelling between Jammu n leh. My plan is from 20tj aug to 3 sep from Mumbai to leh n back.
Anyway as per your suggestion will change my route and will take Manali route now
Can you help me in my planning for road trip
I will be leaving Mumbai on 20th aug at around 6pm
I can extend my complete trip by two day I.e upto 5 sep

        • Hi Makrand,

Assuming ex. Delhi you will be having around 14 days, you can easily do following itinerary:

          Day 1 | Delhi – Manali/Solang Valley
          — Better stay at Solang Valley and avoid Manali as sleeping at Solang Valley does help in acclimatization
          — If going by own car, get the permit made in advance to drive on Manali – Rohtang Pass road through hotel/travel agent in Manali
          — Overnight at Manali/Solang Valley

          Day 2 | Manali/Solang Valley – Keylong/Jispa
          — It is always better to stay either at Keylong/Jispa so that you do not feel sick or hit by AMS.
          — Avoid sleeping at Sarchu at any cost while going to Leh from Manali because your body will not be acclimatized by the time you reach there.
          — I prefer staying at Jispa more because Keylong gives the feeling of a town while Jispa is more closer to nature having Bhaga river running just aside the Manali – Leh Highway at Jispa.
          — Overnight at Keylong/Jispa

          Day 3 | Keylong/Jispa – Leh
          — Leave Keylong/Jispa early next morning, say by 4/5 AM types, so that you reach Leh in the evening.
          — Overnight at Leh

Day 4 | Leh Local Sightseeing + Acclimatization
          — To know the about the places to visit check the link: Travel Guide for Local Sightseeing of Leh Town in Ladakh
          — Overnight at Leh

          Day 5 | Leh – Khardung La – Diskit – Hunder
          — Head for Nubra Valley and stay overnight at Hunder / Diskit
          — On the way enjoy a cup of soup at Highest Motorable Pass (as claimed) Khardung La
          — Diskit has monasteries with tallest lord Buddha statue and Hunder has sand dunes and bacterian camel safari

          Day 6 | Hunder / Diskit – Sumur – Panamik – Sumur – Khardung La – Leh
          — Sumur has a famous monastery to check out and Panamik has hot water springs
          — Overnight at Leh

Day 7 | Leh – Hemis Monastery – Pangong Tso Lake
          — Cover either of Hemis, Thicksey and Shey on the go towards Pangong Tso
          — Overnight at Pangong Tso (Spangmik or Lukung)

Day 8 | Pangong Tso Lake – Thicksey Monastery – Shey Palace – Leh
          — Cover either of Hemis, Thicksey and Shey on return to Leh
          — Overnight at Leh

Day 9 | Rest day at Leh to enjoy local culture and some shopping OR Monastery tour OR you can do tour to Sham Valley
          — Monastery tour may include Hemis, Thicksey, Stakna and Shey monasteries. They come on the route of Pangong Tso but as you will be doing day trip, it will be a bit hectic to include them on that day only.
          — Sham Valley include Alchi, Likir, Basgo Palace, Magnetic Hills, Confluence at Nimmu, Gurudwara Pather Sahib
          — Overnight at Leh

Day 10 | Leh – Tso Moriri via Chumathang
          — Cover Karzok Monastery
          — Overnight at Karzok or Tso Moriri
Day 11 | Tso Moriri – Tso Kar – Debring (Manali – Leh Highway starts) – Moore Plains – Pang / Sarchu
          — Try to start early in the day so that you reach Sarchu where the accommodation options are better than Pang
          — Overnight at Sarchu or Pang
          Day 12 | Pang / Sarchu – Baralacha La – Keylong – Rohtang Pass – Manali
          — On the way cover Suraj Tal, Deepak Tal which are on the road sides only
          — Overnight at Manali
          Day 13 | Manali – Delhi/Chandigarh
          — Return

        • Makrand Shinde on

Thanking you for helping in making my plan

I have read on Facebook Devil on wheel have pass Srinagar on 3 Aug with group of 80 Peoples .
and again passing with next batch on 15 Aug
          How is situation there.
Can we also pass srinagar around 23 – 24 Aug for leh trip

        • You are confusing us with some other group who may be copy cats and using our name mostly or a similar name like us. We do not conduct any tours nor do any commercial travel packges or tours. We are free information sharing community built with a vision to spread smiles in Himalayas. So, what you have heard are those who are spoiling our image using similar name like ours with spelling tweaks here and there.

Regarding your query, just read the account of an individual member of DoW Community who got himself out from Srinagar a few days back and shared his suggestions:

For me safety always comes first but if you still want to risk it, you have your own choice 🙂

  2. hi Dheeraj,
our road trip from srinagr to leh will start from july 20 and also visit to dal lake on 19th but we are little worried about issue going on in kashmir, could you please let us know which part of kashmir affected and its safe to visit dal lake on 19th and start road trip from srinagar to leh july 20

    • I will suggest to have a word with some hotel guy in Srinagar 2-3 days before the trip and then take a call to go from Manali side. These things are dependent from person to person judgement call and what a person feels is OK to him or her given the circumstances. So, best is to talk to a local hotel guy in Srinagar and confirm about the ground situation in tourist places and Srinagar – Leh route. Having being stuck in riots/curfews myself at times, my personal suggestion will be to avoid unless unrest is over and take the Manali route.

  3. Preston Rozario on

    Hi dheeraj
We are 4 of us including 2yrs old baby n we are planning to leave from delhi to leh today night . We’ll be taking srinagar highway n I just need to know whether it is safe to travel via srinagar in terms of terrorist activities n all and also need to know whether we require any pass to cross the highway.

    • Well, as long as you stick to highway in general it remains fine as mostly tourist areas remain unaffected. Check the news now in case there are reports of too much volatility

  4. Hi. I’m planning to visit Leh in September during festival. From Delhi I’ll take flight to Leh and then I’ll return viva Kargil to Srinagar by bus. So is it a sounds good, Leh-Srinagar highway will be clear in September for travelling.??

  5. Hey..
I am planning for a Kashmir great lakes trek in mid august..
I vl reach Srinagar on 12th morning 7 am..and have to reach base camp sonmarg by 5 pm..
Can I go to zoji la in the buffer time I have..?
    Or any other place?

  6. What is the current status of Srinagar-Leh road, I had booked flight ticket to Srinagar on 13-Apr-2016 and plan to go Leh by road on 18-Apr-2016 and then back to Bangalore by flight from Leh, I just wonder to know by that time the road will open.

    • Anees, Srinagar – LEh road is expected to open by mid of April only if weather remains good and favourable. PLEASE take utmost care because earlier opening of road does have risks of snowslides and landslides due to snow melting and unstability.

  7. Hi can we make a roar trip to leh via srinagar in April will the roads be open and do we need snow chains for driving

    • Hardeep, by April end it is expected that Srinagar – Leh Highway will open this year owing to very less snow. You do not need any snow chains to drive to Leh.

  8. margi khandor on

Hi thank you so much for your reply. Actually we have 12-13 days in hand. Also there is one tour organiser of Mumbai who organise manali -leh- manali bike tour. How is that route? Do couples go for such type of bike trip? Please reply.

    • Yes Margi, people do go on such trips. You can check a very balanced and most common itinerary for Leh – Ladakh followed by many travellers including me at the link here for 13-14 days: Most Common Itinerary for Leh – Ladakh.

You can check the nice, preferred list of accommodation options in entire Leh – Ladakh (Leh, Nubra Valley, Pangong Tso, Tso Moriri) including moderate (cheap budget hotels as well) in the series of articles starting on the link here

For the leh – ladakh taxi union rate list 2016 – 17 including the contacts of some reliable taxi drivers within Leh – Ladakh, check the link here. You can get about 12-15% of discount by directly getting in touch with drivers and of course, talking in person rather on phone always help in bargaining more.
While going from Srinagar to Leh, you might need to work out few things as there have been some tensions now in taxi unions and to settle it out what they have done is that they have a transit point just before Fotu La while going to Leh from Kargil. All Leh taxis stop there and kargil taxis too. They exchange passengers and move back in respective directions. Leh taxis take passengers to Leh coming from Srinagar/Kargil and Kargil guys take passengers to Srinagar/kargil coming from Leh

For the list of good restaurants in Leh – Ladakh or eateries or food joints where food is enjoyed by many travellers including me, you can check the link here: List of Good Restaurants in Leh – Ladakh | Restaurant Reviews

Check the list of things to carry for Leh – Ladakh or other trip including basic medical kit, clothing, must haves etc. at the link here: List of Things to Carry for Leh – Ladakh trip.

  9. margi khandor on

Hi we r a couple from Mumbai and want to go for a road trip on bike in the month of June. What will be the weather conditions over there? What suggestions will you give to us?

    • Margi, well, how many days you have in hand. Weather will be nice and pleasant but cold in Ladakh at high altitude places / passes and Manali – Leh Highway. So, go with woollens. You can check a very balanced and most common itinerary for Leh – Ladakh followed by many travellers including me at the link here for 13-14 days: Most Common Itinerary for Leh – Ladakh.
