Jammu, November 23
The tourists who are planning to visit Jammu and Kashmir to enjoy the snow will have to wait a little longer this year as snowfall will be delayed.

Last year, the snowfall came almost a month in advance to the scheduled time, and this year it is expected after mid-December. Last year, the first major snowfall was witnessed on October 22 in some parts of the Kashmir valley.

This year, the current temperature in all three regions — Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh — is two to three degrees above normal.

Officials in the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said currently the minimum and maximum temperature in the Jammu region was between 14 and 25°Celsius. Similarly, in the Kashmir valley the temperature was between 2 and 16°Celsius.

In Ladakh also, which is a cold desert, the trend remained similar with the maximum temperature recorded at 11°Celsius.

Sonam Lotus, Director, IMD, Jammu and Kashmir, said: “The temperature is two to three degrees above normal this year. There are bleak chances of snowfall before mid-December. However, a few higher reaches may witness snowfall before this period.”

“So far, only Gulmarg and Sonamarg witnessed one-inch snow on November 10. But, this was not enough to attract tourists.”

About the forecast of the department, he said there was hardly any possibility of rain in the next 10 days. “The temperature will remain almost similar in the coming few days. Once there will be rainfall, only then there is the possibility of snowfall,” maintained Lotus.

As per the IMD, the snow season in J&K starts from November 15, which lasts till March 15.

  • This year, snowfall is expected after mid-December.
  • The normal snow season in Jammu and Kashmir starts from November 15 to March 15
  • The current temperature in all three regions — Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh — is two to three degrees above normal.
  • According to Met forecast, there’s no possibility of rain in next 10 days.

  1. Will I be able to experience white snow ( not the muddy one) in Srinagar from 24 dec to 29dec….we will also be going to gulmarg….etc

    • There was a snowfall few days back in Srinagar, so high chances are you will be able to see snow over Gulmarg at least. If lucky and snowfall happens in those days, then in Kashmir as well.

    • Nitin, in just 4 days so many places might not be possible. Try to visit Srinagar with Sonamarg and a day trip to Gulmarg may be. Are you planning to do a road trip?

  3. Hi Dheeraj,

I am planning a trip to Kashmir with family around 15th April 2013 for about 4-5 days. My kids are very much looking forward to play in the snow there. (1) Will we get to see good snow (not the muddy one) around that time and if yes, in which place ? (2) Which places should we visit during our 4-5 days stay in Kashmir ? (3) Should we keep our base as Srinagar & stay in hotel there ? (4) And the final & most basic question – is it safe to visit Kashmir ? Regards, Rajesh

    • Hi Rajesh,

      1. Hmm, difficult may be pure white, but still you will be able to find snow at Gulmarg and ahead of Sonamarg toward Zozila and glaciers.
      2. Srinagar, Sonamarg and a day trip may be to Gulmarg
      3. You can do that but I will say 3 days at Srinagar, 2 at Sonamarg
      4. 🙂 … I have been there found it safe enough but there will always be ifs and buts. as soon as calm remains in valley all is well 🙂

      • Hi Dheeraj,

Thanks for your reply. We have booked our tickets 21st-27th April and looking forward to have a memorable & pleasant trip to Kashmir. Any good hotels can you suggest in Srinagar, Gulmarg/Sonamarg and Pahalgam, suitable for families with young kids? Budget would be around Rs.2000-2500 per night

        • Sorry Rajesh, haven’t stayed there so cannot comment on the hotels at these places. If you find few good ones for you where you stay, please share with us too as it will help many others planning their visit to these places. When I am not sure about the hotels I generally go with tourism properties.

    • Hi Suresh,

Yes, there will be plenty of snow present in Kashmir at that time of the year. Snowfall totally depends upon the luck but yes it does snow in that month in Kashmir, mainly Gulmarg should have highest of the chances of getting to see snowfall.

The plan is fine and I will advice you keep the taxi with you for entire trip. Will help you in many aspects. Snowfall purely depends upon your luck. Since, you have dates fixed so better leave it on luck 🙂

        • Deepak, I think snow starts there in winters only, may be in November end very little but by December end there should be good amount of snow. I am just guessing, not 100% for November.

  6. shalin Talajia on

hi i m going to kashmir in nov 14 does there would be showfall and how would be the weather there at that time please inform. and wht shopping should be done there.

    • Hello Shalin,

Snowfall mostly depend on luck and something cannot be predicted but still you can track weather conditions. Taking into consideration the changes in weather now a days, I feel you might not be able to see snowfall at that time of the year in Kashmir. Last year as well valley had delayed snowfall.

hi..i am planning to go kashmir on 15th may,,my son wants to play with snow.can i find snow in kashmir at that time or places nearby..

    • Hello Hina,

I guess higher meadows of Gulmarg and Pahalgam, near Chandanwari might be having snow only in Kahsmir. You will find snow in lower Kashmir by that time.

  12. hardik mehta on

what date to plan for leh-ladakh if snow fall is late tins time. when will srinagar-leh hoghway and leh-manali highway starts this year

    • Hello Hardik,

It is too early to predict about the opening of Manali – Leh Highway and Srinagar – Leh Highway. However, June second week is the safest bet to ply on these highways. Generally, they are open by first week of June and by second third week of June the road condition stabilize comparatively. If you need further details including accommodation, sightseeing, how to plan etc then I will suggest you go through the travel guides for Manali – Leh Highway and Srinagar – Leh Highway linked here and here respectively.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask about any queries related to Leh – Ladakh or others 🙂

    • Hi Kamesh,

Though there are predictions for next 2-3 days for snowfall but I guess after that it is all clear weather, check the link here. I have never been to Gulmarg so will not be able to suggest the right hotels for you. Sorry for that 🙁
