Rohtang Pass Might Remain Open Till December 2013

BRO has claimed that they will keep the Manali – Rohtang Pass road open up to December this year unlike otherwise official closure by 31st October almost every year. However, I feel such claims are made every year but generally it is weather’s call if it allows condition to remain favorable enough or not for snow clearance operations to be carried out. Anyways it is a good news for the people of Lahaul Valley, Pangi Valley who can stock their necessary items for much longer period. Also, It is a good news for tourists as well who are going to enjoy snow filled Rohtang Pass as prolonged as possible. Once Rohtang Pass is closed officially, BRO stops clearance of any snow or landslide from the roads and allow it to hibernate for next 5-6 months.

Manali, 1 Nov 2013: Unlike last year, when the Manali-Rohtang highway was officially on October 31, the Border Roads Organization (BRO) has decided to keep it open as long as possible. “Jawans will keep working even during the winter months. BRO has decided to clear the road after moderate snowfall. Keeping the road open will provide extended time for digging of Rohtang tunnel from Lahaul side,” said commander of 38 Border Road Task Force (BRTF), Colonel Yogesh Nair.

The district administration is responsible for announcement of the official closure of the road. Generally, BRO doesn’t clear snow from the highway after official closure of the road.
