These undiscovered places in Uttarakhand can be reached in a day or two from Delhi/NCR. You should be OK with traveling about 12-14 Hrs a day (the usual time for Manali / Dharamshala / Dalhousie).

Kumaon region of Uttarakhand brings to mind the title of that book written by Jim Corbett, “The Man-Eaters of Kumaon.” But, that was a long time ago, and a lot of areas in this region have now been inhabited by humans. This brings us to a peculiar problem – there are very few idyllic locations left now because tourists are everywhere.
So, if you were to go for a trip, away from the maddening crowds, and into the heart of nature, then where would it be? We say it should be in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand, where adventure awaits everyone. Perhaps, you might also have a chance to encounter the man-eating Bengal tigers in Kumaon. It doesn’t get more offbeat than this! And you are in for a treat in the state of Uttarakhand if you visit Manila. Located about 85 km away from Ranikhet, the village of Manila is sitting at an altitude of 1820 meters and is a great place for a summer vacation.
You can expect snow during the winter seasons, and it can get freezing here with temperatures touching zero degrees Celsius, so think about it before visiting. The best thing to do here in Manila would be to simply be, walking around and enjoying the scenic views.

Nature Connect

KMVN Rest House is available, a location about 3 km from the village. Also, if you’re looking for a local experience, you’re in luck – there are a couple of basic homestays around the region. Not much is available in terms of food options, although the guest house serves decent, local cuisine. Also available is a dhaba very close to the KMVN guesthouse and some dhabas in the main village.

2. Munsiyari
Almost sixteen hours away from Delhi, Munisyari is the base of the Himalayan mountain range and glaciers of Milam, Ralam, and Namik. Known for its breathtaking Himalayan views, Munsiyari is for those who want to feel close to mountains, and are interested in trekking, mountaineering, all the while enjoying unspoiled nature.
The snow-clad mountains here will enamor you, as you find yourself oblivious to daily routines. There are two popular treks from here, namely, the Namik Glacier trek, and the Panchchuli peaks trek, both of which are in the Kumaon region.

Nature Connect
With an altitude of 2298 Mts, Munsiyari is often known as Little Kashmir, thanks to its exquisite views! With the Panchachuli (literally meaning 5 peaks) Peaks forming the star attraction of the backdrop, resembling chimneys in the sky, the virgin environs of the valley will keep you mesmerized.
This is one place where offbeat is the definition, and the isolation is the goal. While previously, this extreme corner of the state was restricted, thanks to its location along the border, Munsiyari is gaining popularity with seekers of the wild and is truly the poster-child for the Kumaon region.
Also, the months of March and April, the entire forest turns red – thanks to the magnanimous Rhododendron flowers of the region.

There are quite a few camping options available, as this place is a trekker’s delight and is the base for many beautiful treks. Also, there are a few budget guesthouses available with limited capacity. So if you’re traveling, be well prepared with your own camping gear!
You’re in luck when it comes to scoring some authentic, hand-woven carpets or getting your hands in some of the finest Himalayan saplings in the main market of the village
As is standard with off-beat travel locations, the best food and sometimes the only food available is either at guesthouses or at roadside dhabas. You’ll be able to relish the local Kumaoni cuisine as well as some lip-smacking Tibetan cuisine.

3. Chaukori
Located in the district of Pithoragarh, Chaukori adorns the western Himalayan Range in the state of Uttarakhand. In this beautiful place, you will be encapsulated by the dense forests and stunning Himalayan peaks. With stunning views of Nanda Devi and Panchchuli peaks as a backdrop, along with surreal sunrise and sunset views, Chaukori is a sight to behold.
Also present are tea gardens for those interested in tea plantation, orchards, and rhododendrons by the number. North of Chaukori is Tibet, while to the South, you will find the Terai region. Book a comfortable resort, and enjoy this stunning Kumaon hill station.

The Chin waterfall with a height of 160 Ft is a great camping locale, about 10 KMs from the village. Take your own food, tent and other necessary things for this experience!
A visit to Patal Bhuvaneshwar is a must from Chaukori for any visitor!!

A KMVN guesthouse is available here at Chaukori and a handful of guesthouses are splattered across the village. Roadside stalls and dhabas are your best when visiting this place. Do try the local cuisine and titillate your taste buds with the Sisunak Saag, Kappa, and Chainsoo among other delicacies.

4. Binsar
The Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary is a place to hide away from the world. About 33 km away north of Almora, this is where you come to for some peace. Binsar has a place called Zero Point from where you can see some of the great Himalayan peaks, such as Kedarnath Peak, Shivling, Trisul and, and Nanda Devi.
Once the summer capital of the Chand Kings, today you can book a forest resort and have a great time in the wild. An exciting place for birdwatchers as it is home to over 200 bird species.

Perched at 2420 m, Binsar is surrounded by peaks of Nanda Devi, Nanda Kot, Panchachuli, and Kedarnath. This little hamlet is surrounded by the Wildlife Sanctuary, where one can be in the company of rare animals, flora, and fauna. With lots of opportunities for adventure travel, including hiking, camping, and nature walk, Binsar will take you deep into the wild.

Panoramic views from every nook and corner of this sleepy town, bustling with the rustic life synonymous with the hills, Binsar provides one of the best places to stay in Uttarakhand, view-wise.
The Binsar Forest Retreat has unreal views while the Grand Oak Manor will provide you with friendly staff and great food. Also, KMVN guesthouses are available here. If you’re looking for more options, Almora is 33 km away and has more of a tourist presence.

5. Lohaghat
Located in the Champawat district of Uttarakhand, Lohaghat lies in the banks of the Lohawati River. It is yet another destination here in the Kumaon region, Uttarakhand. Known for the many temples that are scattered all across this hill town, you could come here to get closer to divinity.
The closest railway station is 89 km away, located in Tanakpur. The Advaita Ashrama here is a branch of Ramakrishna Math and was founded way back in the year 1899.

Nature Connect
Set aside in a setting that doesn’t get more scenic, Lohaghat is next to the banks of the Lohawati river. Merely 7 km from Abbott Mount, Lohaghat enjoys pleasant weather and is one of the least explored regions in the Hills. Situated at the height of 1745 meters, Lohaghat is drenched in mythological importance.
However, it is the starkly contrasting views that make up for its beauty. Also, this is an amazing place to enjoy meditation and yoga and connecting with your inner spiritual self. No setting is more beautiful than this. Another delight is the spring months, with the mountains turning red – thanks to the rhododendron bloom!

Not a lot of options in terms of where to stay. Take your tents along and enjoy being out in the wild and enjoy the nighttime sky! It must be noted that this is not a trekking destination – so if you’re planning on camping, you need to carry your gear.
However, there are a couple of decent properties around the region, as well as a KMVN guesthouse. Some luxuries cottages are available in Mount Abbott, 7 KMs away.
Again, roadside dhabas serve amazing lip-smacking food – including an elaborate Tibetan affair.

The added advantage of certain places not being on the radar of “tourist” destinations further exemplifies its charm. While the region includes everything from Chamoli, Dehradun, Haridwar, to Pauri Garhwal, and even Rudraprayag, Tehri, Uttarkashi. This paradise village of Harsil in the Garhwal region is unspoiled and for the most picturesque views of the Garhwal region. Located on the banks of the Bhagirathi River, Harsil falls on your way to Gangotri and is about 12 hours away from Delhi by road and approximately 220 KMs from Dehradun.
Of course, in case you have time you can always go beyond Gangotri for a trek to Gaumukh.

Situated amidst absolute natural bliss, Harsil, the little Himalayan town is all that you need for a great vacation of rejuvenation. Sitting at an altitude of 7,860 ft., this is one of the best places to visit in the state of Uttarakhand. Pilgrimage tourism thriving, Harsil is solitude at its best and is surrounded by greenery.
While the place is gaining popularity as the resting pit-stop for pilgrims visiting Gangotri, I would strongly urge you to head to this sleepy town for an experience like none other. Also, some of the hotels in the region will provide you with meditation and yoga therapies.

Harsil is your go-to place if you’re a nature junkie as this place encourages eco-tourism, helping you learn about the rustic way of life along with the customs of the place.
Things to do
- Another must-visit place near Harsil is Dharali, which is a hamlet about 6 km from Harsil, famous for its lip-smacking Rajma Chawal (thanks to the extensive cultivation of Rajma in the region) as well as the many apple orchards.
- You can also travel to Nelong Valley from Harsil.
- Wilson Cottage in the sleepy town of Harsil is a charming attraction. This huge mansion was built in 1864, by a man who had deserted the British Army and escaped into the Garhwal region, where he became acquainted with the Raja of Tehri. As the Raja refused him shelter, he moved to Harsil, paying lease money to the Raja. Mr. Wilson introduced the locals to apple farming. The local folks will be happy to share tales with you about Mr. Wilson and his wife, Gulabi.
- During the winter period when Gangotri is snowed out, Goddess Ganga is relocated to Mukhba Village, 1 KM from Harsil.

Being an offbeat location in Uttarakhand, there aren’t many places to stay in Harsil. A few guesthouses are available along with GMVN guesthouses, set up by the Government. In terms of food, a few roadside dhabas are available along with a local restaurant serving north Indian affairs as well as authentic Garhwali cuisine – do indulge!
Just imagine, being surrounded by the love of mother nature and connecting with your spiritual self in a setting so pure! Harsil is a delightful little place to redefine your most calming self.
7. Gwaldam
Next on the list of less known places in Uttarakhand near Delhi is this little hamlet known by the name Gwaldam.
Nestled on the border of Kumaon and Garhwal hills, lies this sleepy unknown hill town of Gwaldam. At an altitude of about 5577 ft., this is a little piece of heaven for those who are tired of the city life. Perched amidst lush greenery, apple orchards, and woods abound, Gwaldam does not feature in any of the top ten places lists where tourists like to visit.
But, its beauty is unparalleled, and often on the radar of the travelers and not the tourists. It is just about 39 km away from Kausani and is simple yet gorgeous.

The entire area of Gwaldam is splattered with apple orchards and nameless flowers as well as boundless springs and myriad of birds. Still untouched and away from the crowded frenzy of other popular hill stations, Gwaldam is a revelation.
Natural Connect
- A 3 KM trek will take you to Badhangari Temple, atop a narrow ridge. The views are indescribable and will be etched in your memory forever.
- Other treks from Gwaldam include the Nanda Devi Raj Jat Yatra as well as the Roopkund Lake trek.
Things to Do
- Macchi Tal is a must-visit when you’re in Gwaldam. It is concealed in a cranny along a stream towards Debal. This place was created in 1928 by the British, wanting to cultivate fish in the region. This place makes for a lovely picnic spot.
- Another must-visit place has to be the Buddhist Khamba temple, located around 1.5 km from the main village area.
- The sunset and sunrise at Trishul Peak is a must-do-thing in Gwaldam

3. Khirsu
Yet another offbeat place or jewel of Uttarakhand’s Garhwal region, Khirsu is located in the Pauri Garhwal region and is an interesting amalgamation of deodar and oak trees. A calm hill station, here you can stay in isolation at a resort of your choice, and be one with nature.

Of course, there is a GMVN budget-friendly guesthouse, thanks to the Government. Apart from that, there are multiple eco-tourism friendly camps between March – October with excellent facilities. A couple of nice hotels are also available.
Khirsu will be a chance for you to reconnect with yourself and the nature around you. It is a gorgeous little hamlet with lots to offer, only if you’re willing to go off the beaten path and explore to your heart’s desire.
9. Chopta – Sari Village
The second last on the list of less known places in Uttarakhand is Chopta – Sari Village region.
Some call it the Switzerland of India, but then again there are numerous locations in the Himalayan region that claim this position. Whatever it may be, Chopta is definitely a stunning location full of enchanting meadows and forests. Deoria Tal is an important trekking destination located close to Chopta.
For those who are interested in adventure tourism, Chopta can be a boon. Deoria Tal to Chandrashila Peak trekking is by far one of the most important treks. Chopta of course also offers stunning views of some Himalayan peaks, including Nanda Devi.
Although the number of people visiting Chopta and nearby places is increasing, Chopta or Sari Villages themselves can still be considered as one of the quaint little offbeat places in Uttarakhand.

Famous for its trekking, camping, birdwatching, yoga, meditation as well as spiritual connects – Chopta has it all and then some! Whatever you may fancy, Chopta will happily provide. What makes is delightful is how unexplored it is, and thus, the beauty is unspoiled, and you’ll be secluded with nature to give you company.
As is synonymous with the region, this hamlet is engulfed with pines and deodars, rhododendrons and many other multitudes of flora – giving you a very inviting and warm welcome.
Natural Connect
So many treks start of Chopta is an important part – this town is base for Tungnath and Chandrashilla as well as the Panch Kedars. Providing unobstructed views of Trisul, Nanda Devi and Chaukhamba – Chopta is THE definition of a perfect vacation for solitude lovers. Chitra Gufa lying around 15 KMs from Chopta is also a beautiful place to visit!
Another delightful activity is spotting the hundreds of bird species and observing their beautiful ways and songs out in the wild. It is important to be dressed down, not in bright colors – as they may seem to shoo away the birds.
Things to do
With so much to see, Chopta is a pleasure for nature lovers. Explore the Rohini Bugyal as well as the Bisurital along with the must-visit of Deoriatal; your trip will not lack adventure and activity. The Rohini Bugyal particularly is a sight to see, and never forget.
A gorgeous meadow hidden amidst thick, dense forests will open up to insane views of surrounding peaks dancing along with the clouds up above! Of course, Rohini Bugyal also falls en route the trek to Deoria Tal and must not be missed! And, I must advise carrying enough water in a water bottle when out in the woods.
Yoga and meditation is another important activity conducted here, thanks to the peaceful environment along with the beautiful views of the lush green mountains.
Stay and Food Options
There are a few hotels and swiss tents available in the region. The charges are nominal. The Mayadeep Resort at Duggalbitta is also great, especially for families and groups. You can also pitch your tents in the region. However, best will be to carry your tents or camping gear.
In terms of Food Options, there’s not a lot of places to eat. Hotels will have in-house dining options.
10. Malari
Last on the list of offbeat places in Uttarakhand is Malari Village.

Hello sir, first of all thanks for all the guidance you are providing even in the third year of your blog.
I am travelling by car to tirthan with my wife and 2 kids taking the route via shimla and jalori by end of this week.
As ill start from delhi and i like taking my foot off the pedal often, its gonna be a long journey.
Please suggest a place siitable and worthy enoiugh to take a break in the journey with a days stay. Weve been to shimla twice hence would not like to stay over there.
