List of things to carry when you go on trip

Are you looking out for one complete list of things to carry when you travel on any kind of trip? Be it mountain travel or beach travel or you go hiking or camping, you need different things to carry on such trips.

There are so many of us who likes traveling to the core of our souls and keep on visiting new, beautiful places every now and then. Sometimes the plan arises out of nowhere and you have no time to think about the contents of the luggage for the trip.

Most of the time in these cases, we forget one or more essential things to carry while going on a trip. You can imagine a situation where you need to rush and search desperately for a small thing such as soap where even a tissue paper would have come handy ;). Such situations are especially true when you are traveling to remote corners of the Himalayas.

What are the essential things to pack for a trip?

Since luggage is most common among any traveler, it would be great always to have a list of things to carry on a trip, in store for yourself. It would certainly be convenient when the plans are abrupt and come out of nowhere, leaving no time for packing the luggage.

I have tried to compile a comprehensive list of thing to carry while I go on a trip and feel could be helpful for each one of us traveling to various places.

Eateries

No trip is complete without carrying the things to eat. Certainly, most of the time food is available on any destination we travel. However, at some places of Spiti or Ladakh or when camping in the remote regions of the Himalayas, food can be hard to find. It is especially true when you are on dietary restrictions.

Hence, it is always good to carry basic eateries on your trips.

  • Energy Bars or Protein Bars for quick snacks.
  • Any restrictive diet items
  • Pre-cooked food if needed

When you go for long treks in the Himalayas or you go for short hikes on your trips, you must carry certain things. It is important and helpful to get the support of some stick that helps you walk uphill to decrease the pressure on knees. And as the weather can change in the Himalayas, it is important to carry rain or snow gear always with you. As you are in the mountains, sun protection is also necessary. And as you need walking or running shoes, you should carry trekking shoes to protect cuts and twists.

Let us look at some of the most important things you must carry when going on treks in the Himalayas or anywhere.

  • Mountains Must Haves
  • Hard Wooden Stick (Also handy in snow for the grip). You can also check a trekking pole at the link: 4-Step Adjustable Anti-Shock Telescopic Hiking Walking Stick with Handle

  • Trekking Shoes. If you are looking for a good trekking/hiking waterproof and a bit warm shoes, you will not go wrong with Forclaz 500 Hiking Shoes. Though I have used them for about 7 years, they never proved me wrong. I have moved to North Face Versa Thermoball but then you don’t need them because Forclaz 500 is one good pair of shoes any day.

    Hello Dheeraj,
We are planning to visit Srinagar, Kashmir from mid April to end, with an infant and 6year kid and also senior citizens.. can u please help to make a list to carry along with.. am little nervous as visiting for the first time and with an infant.. will be really thankful and appreciate your reply back.. thanks

    • Nehal, as suggested in the article, it is comprehensive list of things to carry in mountains. Do carry basic medicine for the kids and infant and carry the food for infant if possible. Milk will be available every where. Use boiled water for the infant as when we travelled with our kid, water was the main source of him being sick mostly. So, we started giving him only boiled water cooled down to drink it.

I am planning a family trip delhi – dharmasala- manali -shimla from dec 14 to 29 th with 5, 3 and 1 1/2 yr old kids. We r not used to these high snowy climates. Is it safe to go with kids at this time. What all precautions i hav to take?. Is there any chance of breathing problem for the kids at this time. Dharmasala to manali n shimla by road.

    Please advice
    Thanks in advance
    Shibna

    • Hello Sibna,

Well, take enough clothes for the infant/toddler and keep the protected from cold. Rest there should not be much of any issue especially the breathing problem because these places are not that high altitude placed and does have vegetation around.

      Regards
      Dheeraj

  12. Hello Dheeraj,

    Nice blog.
Almost cleared my doubts while checking your blog, but some things in mind.

    Trip: Delhi to Leh.
Date: 28 August to #rd September.

We are planning to travel through Car (Grand I10) and will hire 1-2 bikes from Manali.

    1. Is it good time ?

    2. Will Grand i10 be fine or we may stuck somewhere ?

    Thanks in Advance,
    Sahil

    • Sahil, time is fine to travel. For hatchback/sedan taking on Manali – Leh Highway Or Spiti Valley via Manali Or Ladakh, please refer the link: FAQ | Can I do Leh – Ladakh / Spiti / Manali – Leh trip in Hatchback or Sedan? for more details.

  13. We two are travelling to leh from 20th aug to 25th aug, where should we go first nubra or pangong on 21st aug??
As this is monsoon season, travelling from leh to which destination (nubra/ pangong) is safe by bike ??

    • Yogesh, how are you planning to reach there? Are you flying in? If yes, you need two days of complete rest in Leh. Then make two day trip to Nubra and one day trip to Pangong Tso

  14. Hi Dheeraj,
Good to read to many wonderful suggestions. I am looking forward for your help in planning my itenary.
I have booked flight to leh for 8th oct and return flight from leh for 12th oct. So I have 4 days to plan in Leh.
Would you please suggest how should we best utilize these 4 days. We are 2 people.

    Thanks in advance.

    • Abhay, in just 4 days in hand you can take first two days rest in Leh for acclimatization and Leh local on th second day. Then in remaining two days you can make a day trip to Khardung La and day trip to Pangong Tso. Since, you are going in October, the snowfall happens. Check the weather before going to Pangong Tso as in case it snows, the Chang La pass may cloose and you may miss the flight.

  15. Hi, i’m from Malaysia. me and my friend will visit srinagar and ladakh for 2 week this mid of September.

we haven’t anything yet. we will fly to Delhi and delhi to Srinagar and by road back to Delhi.

The plan is travel from kashmir area and move to leh by road. then down to Manali till delhi.

we are planning to rent a royal einfield from Srinagar to Leh. can i rent the bike at srinagar and drop it at Leh?

    • Currently, situation is not that good to travel from Srinagar side and recommended to not make any plans through that route. You dont want to be stuck in a curfew. Better either go from Manali side or book direct flight to Leh from Delhi and come back Manali route.

      • Thanks for reply.

but i bought the ticket to Srinagar from Delhi. i will fly to srinagar on 15th Sept. i did some research, some said its ok to travel from srinagar to kargil and to leh in sept.

we haven’t book anything in srinagar, kargil, leh or manali. is it possible to buy the bus ticket on the spot in srinagar, leh and manali. i will plan bus from manali to delhi. or take train to delhi. but i checked no direct train to delhi from manali.

        thanks

        • yeeenn, there is a curfew going on/off in Kashmir and situation is not that good up there. It is not recommended to travel from Srinagar side at present at least. Things might change in one month but you should keep a tab on news of curfew situation in Kashmir.

  16. Hi Dheeraj,

We are planning to visit Delhi – Jammu – Srinagar – Kargil – Leh – Pang Sarchu – Manali – Delhi from 22nd July. Iternary is the same you have me prepared (the most common one).
Wanted to know what kind of weather can we expect around that time? Will it be raining a lot or more heavy water streams due to snow melt?

    Thanks

    • Umakant, rains does not matter once you cross Kargil and reaches Ladakh and same is applicable up to Manali. However, before that there shall surely be rains for which you should have some buffer days in hand.

  36. Hi Dheeraj,

I am planning a trip to Srinagar-Ladakh in June end for 9 days and bak to Delhi the 10th day. And below are the major places we want to cover-
    Srinagar/Sonamarg
    Leh and nearby monastries
    Nubra Valley
    Pangong Tso Lake
    Tso Moriri Lake
    Zanskar Rafting
    Lamayuru Festival
Could you please advise if we can cover all these places in this trip?
Or it would be great if you can advise the best suitable itinerary for the same.
Moreover, can you suggest how would be the weather there during these days?

    Thanks!

      • Hi Dheeraj,

We will be flying out of Leh. To be more precise, we will be flying from Delhi to Srinagar by early morning flight. Then Srinagar to Leh by road and return from Leh to Delhi by early morning flight. So we have got complete 9 days in hand to explore starting from Srinagar.

        • You can follow the below plan:

          Day 1 | Delhi – Srinagar
          — Enjoy walk around Dal lake and may be Shikara ride as well
          — If you have time then check out, floating market, Shalimar Garden.
          — Overnight at Srinagar

          Day 2 | Srinagar – Sonamarg – Zozi La – Drass – Kargil
          — Enjoy the vistas enroute
          — Have late drunch meal at Drass is you are a vegetarian as sometimes it gets difficult to find veg. food at Kargil
          — Overnight at Kargil

          Day 3 | Kargil – Lamayuru – Leh
          — Cover Mulbekh Maitrey, Lamayuru Moanstery, Lunar Landscapes
          — On the way you can also see Gurudwara Pather Sahib, Magnetic Hills, Confluence at Nimmu
          — Overnight at Leh

Day 4 | Leh Local Sightseeing + Acclimatization
          — To know the about the places to visit check the link: Travel Guide for Local Sightseeing of Leh Town in Ladakh
          — Overnight at Leh

          Day 5 | Leh – Khardung La – Diskit – Hunder
          — Head for Nubra Valley and stay overnight at Hunder / Diskit
          — On the way enjoy a cup of soup at Highest Motorable Pass (as claimed) Khardung La
          — Diskit has monasteries with tallest lord Buddha statue and Hunder has sand dunes and bacterian camel safari

          Day 6 | Hunder / Diskit – Sumur – Panamik – Sumur – Khardung La – Leh
          — Sumur has a famous monastery to check out and Panamik has hot water springs
          — Overnight at Leh

Day 7 | Leh – Hemis Monastery – Pangong Tso Lake
          — Cover either of Hemis, Thicksey and Shey on the go towards Pangong Tso
          — Overnight at Pangong Tso (Spangmik or Lukung)

Day 8 | Pangong Tso Lake – Thicksey Monastery – Shey Palace – Leh
          — Cover either of Hemis, Thicksey and Shey on return to Leh
          — Overnight at Leh

Day 9 | Rest day at Leh to enjoy local culture and some shopping OR Monastery tour OR you can do tour to Sham Valley or Fly out
          — Monastery tour may include Hemis, Thicksey, Stakna and Shey monasteries. They come on the route of Pangong Tso but as you will be doing day trip, it will be a bit hectic to include them on that day only.
          — Sham Valley include Alchi, Likir, Basgo Palace, Magnetic Hills, Confluence at Nimmu, Gurudwara Pather Sahib
          — Overnight at Leh/Delhi

      • Hi Dheeraj,

We will be flying out of Leh. To be more precise, we are flying from Delhi to Srinagar by early morning flight and then Srinagar to Leh by road. And will be flying back from Leh to Delhi by early morning flight again. So we have complete 9 days in hand to explore starting from Srinagar.

        • Thank you so much for your detailed itinerary Dheeraj. Is it possible to include either Zanskar rafting or Tso moriri in this plan? And how about the weather there during June end?

        • Tso Moriri needs an extra day but rafting you can do any day when you have time for 4-5 Hrs after reaching back Leh from Nubra or Pangong Tos

  39. Hi im traveling srinagar leh Highway by road on may 10th but Highway status says closed, when will it open??

  40. Hey Dheeraj.
I am all set to explore ladakh this mid may.
but the bike is on my cousin name .
Is there any kind of paper work needed to carry it or any other problem.
I will be doing from Kashmir-Leh-Manali.
    I have all the papers.
This is my personal bike but due to some reason it was registered on my cousin name.

    • Well, it might be an issue, if the last names are same may be you can prove it by that. But, it all will depend on the way you are confronted.

      • Thanks Dheeraj.
One of my relative from Kashmir told me to get just simple paper work, which should read- “that my cousin is allowing me to take his bike”.
Btw i will be doing with pillion on duke 200.
Its going to be typical as i am the only license holder.
        So any advices.
Nd seriously boss…Hats off for your work.
I have been planning almost my entire trip through DOW !!

        • It all depends bro, if you get caught and it is not your day, nothing will work. Otherwise, they may not even stop you. But, yeah do carry that paper.

  41. Hi Dheeraj,

I have got the maximum infomationm however I am unable to find a exhaustive list of spares to carry during our ride. So far we have prepared the following list:
    1. Spanners
    2. Puncture kit
    3. Spare tubes

    6. Clutch plates

  43. CJ Piotrowski on

I’m planning a solo motorcycle trip from Delhi-Manali-Leh and back over the course of 3 weeks.

Since I will be arriving from a long term motorcycle trip through Vietnam to Delhi, I would like to know the likelihood and average cost of buying/renting the following in Delhi:

-Clothing discussed in below link (I’m 6’4” or around 196 cm tall)
    -Tent
-Gum Boots (Size 13 US/46 Euro/29.4 cm foot)
    -Riding/Hiking Boots (Size 13 US/46 Euro/29.4 cm foot)

Should I buy/rent these in Delhi or just plan on buying/renting some in Delhi, the rest in Leh?

    • Hello CJ,

I will suggest that instead of renting these things you should buy them and if not needed in future better donate them in the villages of remote Himalayas only because the rent of such equipments for 3 weeks will be almost equivalent to the buying prices of the product. Since, you will come to Delhi, you can visit Decathlon store in Noida or Gurgaon to get all these stuff. You will get your sizes too

      • CJ Piotrowski on

I will buy then. Where can I get all my materials besides the overpriced decathlon store you just mentioned?

        • CJ, I thought we get the good quality stuff only at Decathlon store at reasonable rates because I never came across a shop selling good quality stuff at such rates in last 7-8 years of my travel experience at least around Delhi.

But anyways, if you are looking forward to cheap stuff then when you visit Delhi, you can go to Gopinath Bazar in Army Cantonment area OR Sadar Bazar in Army Cantonment area where you will get this stuff too at lower price but quality will not be up to mark. However, I see one point since you have to use it only for few weeks, who cares 😉 😉

  44. Daniel Djukic on

How well equipped are Leh’s trekking gear shops by now?

Especially when it comes to quality/brand equipment… Particularly I’d like to purchase hiking shoes, or trekking pants when I arrive in Leh. I’d be very thankful if you could share your experiences here.

Do you also have infos on gear rental – especially for sleeping bags? Available at what cost?

    Thank you 🙂

    • Hello Daniel,

There are many shops in Leh main market offering camping and tent gear. Frankly speaking, I will suggest that you purchase the hiking shoes from places like Decathlon (Forclaz 500 Quechua) available near Chandigarh, Delhi/NCR area. Rest you can rent in Leh when you reach up there.

  45. Sujith A K on

Hai Dheeraj, I am planning a trip to Ladakh on May 18th-30th. I have done some research and has also followed your website, and thanks for the help you are doing. Do you have any pdf’s of a comprehensive Ladakh Tourism Guide.?? Would be usefull during the trip.

    • No Sujith, we do not have any books. Its all there on the website. Though we will be launching our Mobile App for both Android and iOS later this month, which you can install and stay connected with us always 🙂

  46. Travelling from Shri nagar to Leh by road.,8th May 2016 for 8 days.
Is Toyota Innova ok. Driver will come from Leh.
Do I need to carry sleeping bag for tents at Panong.
Do I need sallopetts ,warm boots ,heat pads.

    • Yes Innova shall be fine. There is no need to buy the sleeping bag if you dont have it else if you have it then you can carry. The biggest challenge will be sleeping at Pangong Tso which can be sorted by making a day trip to Pangong tso or sleeping at Tangste 34 KMs before Pangong tso which have gues houses with heater. If you have warm boots or trekking boots then better carry them.

  47. Hi,
We have plans to drive from Shri nagar to Leh on the 8th of May 2016 Night halt at Kargil.
Toyota Innova with a driver from Leh. Spend seven days touring around Leh.
How cold will it be then?
What shoes do you recommend. Do I need my sallopetts. Heat pads.
Can one stay in a tent in Panong .do I need to carry a sleeping bag?
    Manu
    Y thanks

    • Hi Tripta, it will surely be cold at places like PAngong tSo and high mountain passes like Khardung La, Chang La, Zojila havign snow around them as you are making a early trip to Ladakh. You do not need any heating pads in case you are carrying sufficient number of heavy woolens. Pangong tso tents will not be up but Himalayan Wooden Cottages may be running by that time of the year.

  48. Hi, we will reach on 15 midday and leave 17 March. All girls who r going to enjoy just the beauty with trying our hand in skiing. What is the temperature like in that time? Could u please tell me if I need 1. thermals for both upper and lower, 2. Waterproof jacket and pant and gloves, . Also will gym shoes suffice? Or I need special shoes? Please reply.

      • I’m travelling to auli..from 15th to 17th. Will be at rishikesh camping on 17th 18th.

        • So, you will just be able to reach Auli on 15th, 16th you will have it on your own. Just hike around and spend leisure time. Then next day you need to move back from Auli. There isn’t much else you can do with just 1 day in hand.
