Leh – Ladakh Taxi Rates 2018 – 19

The new season for Leh – Ladakh travel is about to begin in 2018 and as expected by this time of the year, Ladakh taxi union has published the Leh – Ladakh Taxi Rates 2018 – 19. In this article today, I am going to share with you the latest taxi rates of the year 2018 – 19 for all the routes in Leh – Ladakh. It is quite a pleasant surprise that there have been no major hikes in the taxi rates of Leh – Ladakh sightseeing for another consecutive year 🙂 🙂 … I believe it is quite welcoming & understanding step on behalf of whole Leh – Ladakh taxi union and will surely help tourists make a good trip to Leh – Ladakh. Frankly speaking, I had expected around 8-10% at least this year 😛

People going first time to Leh – Ladakh must say or feel that rates of the Ladakh taxis are very high. However, there are always good reasons to choose a local taxi in Leh – Ladakh over an outside state taxi or drive. The taxi rates in Leh – Ladakh are designated or divided as per the basis of the model and make of the taxis. In Leh – Ladakh, you can get XUV, Scorpio, Xylo, Aria, and Innovas. I am sharing the update on taxi rates with published rate chart in the article below:

  • XUV, Innova and Aria (highest price tag) – No major change in rates
  • Xylo, Scorpio, Tavera, Sumo Grande, Qualis, Safari, etc.. (middle price tag) – No major change in rates
  • Eeco, Omni Van, Winger, Old Sumo, Bolero, etc.. (lowest price tag) – No major change in rates
  • Tempo Traveller / Wingers – No major change in rates
Please note that at times while going from Srinagar to Leh, you might need to work out few things if there have been some tensions in taxi unions of Kargil and Leh. In order to settle it out, what they do is that they make a transit point just before Fotu La while going to Leh from Kargil. All Leh taxis stop there and Kargil taxis too. They exchange passengers and move back in respective directions. Leh taxis take passengers to Leh coming from Srinagar/Kargil and Kargil guys take passengers to Srinagar/Kargil coming from Leh. But, that happens only when there is an issue.

The Leh – Ladakh taxi rates list listed below covers Ladakh sightseeing including trips to Nubra Valley, Pangong Tso, and Tso Moriri. It also covers the taxi rates for Manali – Leh Highway and Srinagar – Leh Highway routes. I am also enlisting below some of the most frequently visited trips in Ladakh and the applicable taxi rates for those routes. This will help you quickly get rough idea of your budget for a taxi in Leh – Ladakh.

  • Srinagar – Leh in 2 days = Rs 18400
  • Leh Local sightseeing = Rs 2500-3000
  • Leh – Nubra Valley 2 Day = Rs 10566
  • Leh – Pangong Tso 2 Day = Rs 10301
  • Leh – Tso Moriri – Tso Kar – Sarchu – Manali 2-3 days = Rs 29056
  • Leh – Manali 2 Days = Rs 21588
  • Leh – Pangong Tso 1 Day = Rs 8653
  • Leh – Nubra Valley 1 Day = Rs 8053

You should always carry your own water bottle and refill it as many times as you need water. It will not only keep you hydrated always, but you will also help in saving the Himalayas from plastic garbage. Remember, every tiny step counts and your step in this direction can help save the Himalayas too !! 🙂 🙂

Where to get self-drive car in Leh – Ladakh?

I am not aware of any company that provides cars for self-drive in Leh – Ladakh. No such self-drive car rentals exist in Manali or Srinagar as well. So, the only option is to hire a local Ladakh taxi and request driver to self-drive it on some sections of the tour 🙂 …

Can I take a self-drive car to Ladakh?

Unfortunately, you can only use the self-drive rented cars with black number plate and yellow number plate, just to enter Leh and exit Leh from Srinagar – Leh Highway or Manali – Leh Highway. However, you cannot use them for any kind of sightseeing within Leh – Ladakh to places like Nubra Valley, Tso Moriri, and Pangong Tso. For sightseeing within Ladakh, you will need to hire a Ladakh based taxi.

Pro Tip: If you are doing a self drive trip to Leh – Ladakh, then make sure to read my article on 40 Must Have Things to Carry on a Self Drive Trip to the Himalayas

Are taxis rented outside Leh – Ladakh allowed?

Self-drive rented cars and taxis outside Ladakh are not allowed to do any sightseeing within Leh – Ladakh. You can use them for getting to Leh and getting out from Leh but not for any kind of sightseeing within Leh – Ladakh. So, the self-drive cars you are taking must have a private number plate, mostly should be under your name, your wife name or your father name otherwise you will have to again hire a taxi within Ladakh and double pay for your local taxi without using it. You can also read: Rented Self Drive Cars in Leh – Ladakh Banned “FORCIBLY”

Are there any affordable taxis in Leh – Ladakh for solo travelers or couples?

You are alone/couple and private taxis are very costly in Leh but you will be able to find the shared taxi without much fuss at all. There are lots of flyers which people put at cafes, dine-ins, restaurants, travel agent desks/shops/whiteboards wanting to share the taxis for different trips within Ladakh. Even travel agent organize such shared taxis trip as well but charge a little higher about Rs 200-300 more than it would ideally cost. So, in the worst case, you can always go back to them and book a seat for yourself. Gelling up with people in Ladakh is more or less easy because many people travel solo and look forward to meeting new people and share cultural thoughts and values over the trip. Nowhere else in the world you will find more smiling and helpful people as Ladakhis are 🙂

Conclusion

I understand that the costs of a taxi in Leh – Ladakh is pretty high but considering the region, wear and tear, maintenance, the difficulty in driving and a short tourist season, you start feeling them justified. Always remember that you can count on most of these drivers to get you a good accommodation in Ladakh too even in case you have not booked it. Most of them are not those kinds of commission agents that will take you to the hotel of their own interest only. So, you can mostly count on them for stay options too in case you have not done the pre-bookings. They can genuinely help you as well as locals of the region who may provide you authentic Ladakhi stays. I hope the above information will be useful for your upcoming trip to Leh – Ladakh.

  7. Dear Dheeraj

I am planning a trip to Leh in mid of October with my wife. It will be a 5 days trip and will be coming directly from Mumbai to Leh by Air. Can you please give me the best plan to visit the nearby destinations in 5 days. I dont want to cover everything in 5 days (and it wont be anyways) but want to see the Nature/Landscape mostly and will be travelling by car (i heard that travelling on bike at this time is not a good idea)
Can you please give me the best plan along with the travel and accommodation expenses.

Also is it too cold in October ? can we experience a Snowfall that time? Is it a good idea to stay at Pangong lake at that time?

    Thanks,
    Vaibhav

    • Vaibhav,

You can plan a trip in below manner

  8. Hi Dheeraj,
Me and my friend are planning a trip to Leh from 30/09/18-06/10/18. We want to visit four places majorly- pangong, nubra valley, tso kar and tso moriri. As we are two in number, we are looking for shared taxis to these places. Will shared taxis available on the above dates? If yes, then can you please provide the fare/person. If no, then can you tell the exact fare for whole taxi so that we can plan accordingly. Also, will it be safe to reach Leh direct by flight as we are panning to do so. What type of clothes we should be carrying there? Also, can you tell the complete budget excluding flights
    Thank you !

    • You will have to find the shared taxis at Changspa road or main market Leh where people put up flyers and whiteboards to search for folks. Exact fare of whole taxi should be 30000-34000 for all the above places.

  9. Hi Dheeraj,

We have a flight to Leh reaching on 14th Sep Morning and departure is scheduled for 18th Sep. So, we are planning to cover major places like Pangong & Nubra.

    Plan :

1 : Stay in Leh on day of arrival 14th sep to get acclimatize and leave for Nubra next morning using local taxi covering Khardungla and stay in Nubra overnight. ( 15th Night in Nubra )

2 : As we want to cover Pangong , Should be cover the same while travelling back from Nubra and stay at Pangong over night (16th night ) or you suggest something else.

3 : If we follow above two plans, we should reach Leh by 17th afternoon , so is there something else we should cover en-route or nearby.

We also want to cover magnetic hill, so should be do it on 14th Sep ( day of arrival ) or it isn’t it worth and we should go for other nearby places instead ?

Also, for Permit, we were little confused and selected all the circuits mentioned online and paid INR 500 for it. Since we selected all circuit will there be any challenge in getting it stamped considering we have just 4 days or it should be Ok, since we selected all but will cover 1 or 2 out of them.

Any other suggestions for the places to cover within 4 days ? We will contact the taxi person suggested on this page.

    • Anuj, you can follow the below plan for 5 days

    1. Tuesday, 4/6 : Leh-Khardung La-Turtuk (stay at Turtuk)
    2. Wed, 5/6 : Turtuk-Nubra Valley (stay at Nubra, or not ?)
    3. Thurs, 6/6 : Nubra-Pangong Tso-Chang La-Leh
    4. Friday, 7/6 : Leh – Tso Moriri (stay at Moriri)
    5. Sat, 8/6 : Tso Moriri – Leh
    6. Sunday, 9/6 : Leh-Delhi (flight)

we will take a group cab for those places…

    1. is my itin correct? i mean the places list
    2. for #3 (nubra-pangong tso) can we go direct to #4 (tso moriri), I mean from pangong tso direct to moriri, no need to come back to Leh?
    3. can u please recommend some drivers who can take us with such itinerary 🙁
    4. for Turtuk, is it possible if we cross the next village at the border? only to take pictures, i mean 😉

i really need to take the places above, especially Turtuk 🙂

thank you soooo much, Deeraj !!

    you’re the best !!
    🙂

    • Hi Dysta,

I see you plan to come to Leh after visiting Pangong Tso on the same day. I will not recommend doing it and in case the tickets are final then you must drop either Turtuk or stay in Hunder/Nubra or Tso Moriri. One of these you have to drop to complete this trip. Assuming your flights are booked and you cannot add one more day, then skip either Turtuk and do 3 day trip to Nubra and Pangong or else skip stay at Hunder, Nubra (Turtuk is part of Nubra only :)) and go directly to Pangong Tso from Turtuk. Take a call based on what kind of shared taxi you get.

      Regards
      Dheeraj

      • Hi Dheeraj,
Yes after Pangong we will back to Leh. And then start to Moriri the next morning.

I would love to change it to Pangong to Moriri direct at the same day and over night at Moriri… No need to back to Leh.

        Is it possible?

Then I have to stay at Turtuk coz I really love the landscape… Its ok if we skip nubra valley stay.

Can u please suggest me for 5 days with those places?

Many thanks Dheeraj.. u’re the best!!

        • Being a foreigner, you cannot travel from Pangong Tso to Tso Moriri direct route. You are looking at following:

Day 1 | Leh to Turtuk
Day 2 | Turtuk to Pangong Tso via Shyok Village route
Day 3 | Pangong Tso to Leh
Day 4 | Leh to Tso Moriri
Day 5 | Tso Moriri to Leh

  12. Hi Dheeraj. I’m Farah from Malaysia. Would really appreciate it if you can take a look at my itinerary and let me know if it’s doable. I’m from a tropical country therefore I really have no idea about acclimatization and how to incorporate it into my plan. However I’ve been reading your blog a lot and I’m trying to follow closely what you have suggested:

15-Sep KUALA LUMPUR – AMRITSAR (FLIGHT)
    16-Sep AMRITSAR
    17-Sep AMRITSAR – JAMMU (BUS)
    18-Sep JAMMU – SRINAGAR (FLIGHT)
    19-Sep SRINAGAR
    20-Sep SRINAGAR – KARGIL (BUS)
    21-Sep KARGIL – LEH (BUS)

    26-Sep LEH – SRINAGAR (FLIGHT)
    SRINAGAR – AMRITSAR (FLIGHT)
    27-Sep AMRITSAR – KUALA LUMPUR

    • Farah, you are going so far and missing Pangong Tso lake will not be worth the money and time spent. I will advice below:

        • Hi Dheeraj.

My friend and I have just completed our Amritsar – Srinagar – Leh trip today.

Firstly, thank you so much for your kind help in planning our itinerary. You’ve been very helpful. We can’t never repay your kindness. But the next time I come to India please let me buy you a drink.

Secondly, I’d like to recommend Mr. Karma Sonam (09419215110 & 09906991011) to anyone who’s going to Leh. I don’t even know where to start. He’s the perfect guide you need for this type of adventure. He is very efficient, very attentive to our needs and very protective of our safety. His experience and his great planning was the reason why we weren’t very worried even though there was heavy snow and road closure. Even when we had to use another route where foreigners weren’t usually allowed, I was very confident that we would get the permission to go through because I just knew Mr Karma would do anything in his power to help us getting back to Leh safely.

He suggested good hotels and places to eat along the way. Really, just follow his suggestions. He also went out of his way to make us comfortable. As there were only me and my friend in his vehicle, he used the extra space to bring a picnic basket which he stocked with ginger tea (which he would refill at every restaurant/hotel we visited), some biscuits, and juices. He would give us the ginger tea to help us with the cold. How thoughtful!

He’s a very humble and friendly person that throughout the trip, we didn’t think of him as our driver but as an older brother that drove us around. Mr Karma was also very helpful towards other people who were facing trouble along the way (like a car with punctured tyres or bikers who got stuck) that he didn’t hesitate even for a second to help them. That reflected his true personality and as his clients, we were very proud of his kindness.

Thank you again Dheeraj for listing Mr. Karma number in your posting or else we would never have gotten the chance to meet this amazing human being.

You are also an amazing human being, Dheeraj for helping thousands of people who seek to witness the magnificent Himalaya with their own eyes. This is the best trip of my life.

          Thank you.

  13. Shubhashish Bharadwaj on

    Hi,
We are a group of 6 people planning to travel LEH from 21st nov- 26th nov. Will be coming by early morning flight from delhi.
I want to know if we can visit pangong lake /khardungla /nubra valley at that time or not.
We want to see snow , will it be possible?.

Also what will be taxi charges.

    regards
    shubhashish

    • Yes, all the routes are open within Ladakh all round the year. You will be able to do the trip to Pangong Tso and Nubra Valley. Taxi charges are mentioned in the article above.

  14. Hello
I am a non-indian solo traveller landing in Leh this Thursday 18th for 6 days.
Is it easy to join other solo travellers and share a taxi?
How about the PAP permit? Do offices work on Saturday/Sunday?

    • Yes, the office is open on Saturday and you can get the Protected Area Permit

No where else in the world you will find more smiling and helpful people as Ladakhis are 🙂

I would like to share my experience with Mr. Karma Sonam (+91 94192 15110 and +91 99069 91011) on my trip to Nubra and Pangong
He drives a White Mahendra Xylo (JK 10 A 3804)
Honestly speaking he is an all in one package, and helped our entire group of 10 tourists with everything we needed on the way
He knows all the better places to have lunch, stops for evening snacks and shops in the market to buy stuff at reasonable rate
He carried out our process of ILP very smoothly, the only efforts taken by us was to provide him with our proof of identity

He is incredibly amicable which left us delighted by his company throughout the trip
The driving skills of Mr. Karma are exceptional!
He is cool headed and made sure we reached all the destinations on time, despite our long unplanned breaks during the journey

When we had network connectivity issues, that man unhesitatingly lent us one of his SIM Cards to use in case of any calls/messages
This was the kindest gesture anyone could offer while in an away town
We really found him very helpful throughout the trip and have promised to stay in touch with him henceforth

Frankly speaking, it’s hard to find people like Mr. Karma who turned out to be our Guardian Angel in unfavorable circumstances
Also he is a respected man throughout the city of Leh
He very well deserves a 5-star for his driving and interaction with tourists

I had carried my family including a child of 5 years to Leh, Nubra and Pangong and I found this man Tashi with Phone 9469630613 a very sensible and professional driver. Apart from being a very good driver, found him to be a very good person as well. Kept him for the entire tour of 4 nights 5 days until he saw us off at the Airport on the final day,

    Wish him a great Luck

    • Jigar Desai on

Sir…can you guide me what was the overall cost of transportation and stay…each seperately…. Thanks in advance

          — Ask him to be with you guys starting first day itself, if required and charged reasonable else do it at your own.
          — Again DO NOT over exert and take little steps and slow walks only.
          — If feeling OK then do Local sightseeing. To know the about the places to visit check the link: Travel Guide for Local Sightseeing of Leh Town in Ladakh
          — Do not use stairs at any of these places just to see them as it will exert your body much more.

          Day 3 | Leh – Khardung La – Diskit – Hunder
          — Head for Nubra Valley and stay overnight at Hunder / Diskit

Day 4 | Hunder / Diskit – Shyok Village or Wari La – Pangong Tso

Day 5 | Pangong Tso – Leh, covering Hemis, Thicksey and shey monasteries
          — Cover Hemis, Thicksey and Shey
          — Overnight at Leh

Day 6 | Rest day at Leh to enjoy local culture and some shopping OR Monastery tour
          — Overnight at Leh

The taxi will cost you about 20000-22000 for this trip and stay will cost about 10000-12000

  19. hello there,

i have a plan to do this route (Khardungla ,Deskit, Hunder, Sumoor, Panamik, Pangong lake via Shyok (Enroute visit 3 Idiot School, Sindhu Ghaat, Shey, Thiksey) in three days, how much the approximate price for that trip? I will travel in September. And how much the price of taxi from bus arrival (we will travel from srinagar) to main bazae area?

    Thanks

    • It should be around 18000 for a three day trip to Nubra, Pangong Tso and back to Leh. The drops of taxis locally are around 300-500 per drop.

  20. Hi, I want to thank the OP for this post as I was fortunate enough to book one of the drivers mentioned here – Abbas +919469271786 for our recently concluded Ladakh trip in June 2018. I can safely say he was one of the highlights of our trip. He made us feel super safe and was very knowledgeable about all the routes. I am bit of a detail addict but even I relaxed and let him guide the way. He convinced us that we can do Pangong to Tso Moriri route and thank god we listened as the ride between the two lakes is beyond beautiful. We were so happy with Abbas that we booked him to drop us till Manali. Thank you to everyone who contributes here! Every detail makes a difference like it did for us!

    Hello

I would love to share my experience with a Taxi Driver ( Rigzen Namgyal – 096222950842, 09419844285 ). He have a 2016 model, well maintained White Innova – JK10A5562. I was looking for a driver who would pick me up from Manali and drop me off at Leh airport after the whole tour and also someone from Leh. I tried various people from the list of drivers here and finally got settled with Rigzen Namgyal. He is a very cool headed, matured and friendly person. We communicated with him over Phone and Whatsapp and he came down to Manali from Leh (Nearly 480 KM) to pick-up us, without asking for any money. We travelled with him for next 10 days and he never asked for any money. Whenever we asked him about the payment, he just replied “You can make payment at last or you can pay it once you reach to your home safely”. This kind of trustiness or behavior, I never found from any of the Taxi Driver in plain land. Due to multiple high passes, he carried Oximeter and Oxygen Cylinder in his vehicle and he never charged a single amount for that. As we 4 friends were interested with Photography, so we numerous times asked Rigzen to stop the car and we spent at least 30 minutes for each stop – but we never found any changes in his behavior. He even helped us to get good and cheap accommodations in Jispa, Hunder, Pangong and Tsomorori. Also once we reached Leh, he provided me a Local BSNL Sim – for my mobile connectivity. All kind of these facilities are provided by him without any extra charge.

Due to his co-operation, punctuality, good behavior and well maintained car– we completed our trip without any issue. The most important part of him, is his behavior and faith. As per me, if you want a good car with a good driver and with a discounted rate, then you can reach to Rigzen.

  26. Can we get shared taxi from manali to Tso moriri and pangong tso? Are there shared taxi for return route? Where can we get them ? The drivers you mentioned above, do they provide any such options?

    • No you cannot get shared taxis from Manali to do Tso Moriri and Pangong Tso as only local Ladakh taxis can run on those routes plus you will not be acclimatized to sleep at such high altitude places traveling from Manali. Also, you need inner line permit to travel to such inner line region of Ladakh

  27. Dipto Dasgupta on

    I want to travel Leh-Nubra Valley-Pangoong-TsoMoriri-Pang-Jispa-Sarchu-Leh.
What should be the price & How to book ?

  28. Hi Sir, i just wanted to know that in Srinagar where will i get shared taxis/pvt Taxis to leh, because i want to visit Drass Memorial & afters direct to Leh

Any spots/places for srinagar – leh taxi stands will be helpfull

    • Jack, the taxis to Leh – Kargil from Srinagar are available from the Taxi stand opposite of Tourist Information Center in Srinagar.

      • Thnkx for the revert
Basically i am planning to go from Srinagar to Drass (Stay for sometime to visit Drass memorial) and then drass directly to leh with some small halts in between for rest (But no plans to stay overnight)
How much time do you think it will take from Srinagar to drass to Leh using taxi because we plan to leave early morning asap from Srinagar

  29. Somnath Bhattacharyya on

I want to go leh from Delhi oct 1st week or last.I will cover up it within 7 or 8days
I want to go somoriri also.pl send me a tour programme.

    • It will take 3 days to reach Leh from Delhi via Manali side with stopovers at Jispa, Manali and 4 days to come back to Delhi from Leh via Srinagar side with stop overs at Jammu, Srinagar, Kargil . This makes it 7 days. 1 Day is required in Leh for acclimatization. Opt to go via Manali – Leh Highway and I will suggest that you refer the thread for more details on the route and night halts though it is of 9 days: Manali – Leh – Ladakh – Manali | Itinerary for 9 Days. You can fit in plan I suggested in above para in this plan

  32. Hi Sirjee,

You have mentioned = Leh – Nubra Valley 1 Day = Rs 8053
I will be going to this Murgi village via Panamik and as per the rates above, it states 4000-5000 with return to leh

Please confirm if this is correct?
Also khardung La & Nubra valley will be covered in this route, right? correct me if i am wrong
    Thanks in advance

    • Khardung La and Nubra Valley will be covered in this route. Those 4000 will not be from Leh but within Nubra Valley charges on top of Hunder – Deskit which is about 9700 + 4000.

      • Hi friends can anybody share stay in Hunder/Diskit and Pangong Tso.
        Thanks

        • You can check the nice, preferred list of accommodation options in entire Leh – Ladakh (Leh, Nubra Valley, Pangong Tso, Tso Moriri) including moderate (cheap budget hotels as well) in the series of articles starting on the link here.
