Leh Ladakh Taxi Rates 2013 – 14

Finally, just before the start of the Ladakh season 2013-14 I have been able to manage to get hold of the latest Leh Ladakh Taxi Rates 2013 – 14 from leh taxi union. Guess, there is a slight increase in prices but not that much as compared to last year 2012 where the prices were almost increased by 22%. This year the prices are hiked in a range of about 8-10% which is reasonably acceptable. Also, like it started with last year onward, taxi union has separated the rates on the basis of model and make of the taxi. The have grouped the taxis as –

  • Innova and Xylo (highest price tag)
  • Scorpio, Tavera, Sumo Grande, Qualis, Safari and Winger (middle price tag)
  • Eeco, Omni Van, Sumo old (lowest price tag)

These are the rates from last year and you can find the updated Leh taxi union rates for the year 2014 – 15 at the link: Leh Ladakh Taxi Rates 2014 – 15

Below you can find the entire rate list of leh taxi union for sightseeing purposes within Ladakh and to Manali and Srinagar as well for the year 2013 – 2014.

      • Thx a lot Dheeraj.. This mean a lot for us.. Can u let me know if there is any chance of including rafting to this itinerary.. Once again ur website and inputs are of great help for many of us..

        • Hi Shankar,

May be on Day 6 you can leave early from Nubra Valley and do it. It will be hectic though. Else do it after reaching Manali near Manali instead of Leh.

A happy new year to you and your family !!

          Dheeraj Sharma
PS: Sorry for the late reply, I was on a trip to Kumaon, Uttarakhand for the last 8-9 days.

      • Can u also let us know if we would be missing tso moriri… Is t a must watch place or can we console it with Panging..

        • Shankar, I somehow love Tso Moriri more than Pangong Tso. But, for the first time I will suggest that you do Pangong tso if you cannot ad a day in here.

  3. Hi Dheeraj,

The info provided here is really invaluable and helped clear a lot of things out for us. 5 of us have planned a trip from AUG 15th. Our itinerary (quite flexible) for now is as follows.

    15 – Land in Srinagar
    16 – Srinagar
    17 – Srinagar to Sonmarg/Kargil
    18 – Sonmarg/Kargil to Leh
    19 – Leh
    20 – Leh
    21 – Leh to Pangong
22 – Pangong to Tso Moriri
23 – Tso Moriri to Leh
    24 – Leh
25 – Leh to Nubra valley
    26 – Nubra valley
27 – Nubra valley to Leh
    28 – Leh to Kargil
    29 – Kargil to Srinagar

Apart from the mentioned places we also plan to visit monasteries and do some adventure sports like river rafting and Paragliding.

We are currently in talks with taxi drivers.

    I wanted to know:
    1) Do you suggest we hire a taxi from srinagar through the whole duration? The average quote for from drivers is about 50k.

    2) What are the best places to do rafting and paragliding?

    • Hi Nitya,

      1. Srinagar taxis cannot ply in Ladakh. They are used to drop off only. For the leh – ladakh taxi union rate list 2014 – 15 including the contacts of some reliable taxi drivers within Leh – Ladakh, check the link here. You can get about 10-12% of discount by directly getting in touch with drivers and of course, talking in person rather on phone always help in bargaining more.

      2. Rafting can be done on the last day as suggested to move one day below at last and you can stay at Alchi after Rafting or Uley. From Alchi or Uley, go to Kargil. Paragliding is not available in Ladakh.

Also, do the itinerary as per below:
21 – Leh to Nubra Valleu
      22 – Nubra Valley
23 – Nubra Valley to Leh
24 – Leh – Pangong Tso, cover monasteries
25 – Pangong Tso – Leh, cover monasteries
      26 – Leh – Tso Moriri
      27 – Tso Moriri – Tso Kar – Leh

Move 20 rest day to 27.

  4. Hi Dheeraj, first of all thank you for this detailed description on the cabs in ladakh. It really helped me to understand the way things work in leh. Now I am really hoping to get your help with my travel plan. Me and my 6 other friends are planning to go to Ladakh in Aug. We start in Delhi on 15th Aug reach Leh via Manali and Sarchu on 17th night. Then do an over night Pangong and Nubra Valley during the next 5 days before departing for Srinagar via Sonmarg and catch a flight to Mumbai from there on 24th. We plan to take an Innova /Xylo for the entire duration of the journey. Now we really don’t know what’s the ideal amount to pay for the 10 day trip for the cab and who to take the cab from. Any help will be appreciated here. Looking forward to hearing from you.. Cheers..

    • Deepak, the entire circuit from Manali to Srinagar will cost you about 50K as per union rates of taxi. Also, do Nubra Valley first and then Pangong Tso. Also avoid overnight stay at Sarchu and do it at Jispa. You will not be acclimatized enough to sleep at Sarchu that early in the trip. You have to hire one Manali based taxi that will drop you at Leh and then you need to hire Leh based taxi for a drop till Srinagar after covering Ladakh. You can refer the comprehensive list of drivers linked in the article above to get in touch with these drivers.

  5. Hi Dheeraj

First of all, huge, Thanks for extensive information. We will be 6 people travelling from Srinagar – Leh – Manali from 30th July and plan to reach Manali by 11th August ( As we have flight Delhi back to our respective cities on 13th Aug evening. I had two questions:
    1) We are 6 people. Which would be the best car to hire? all the way from Srinagar – Leh – Manali. Innova or Winger?

From Srinagar to Leh we would have quite some luggage (around 12 bags) So am not sure how it will be managed in Innova. After reaching Leh it would not be a problem as we would leave most luggage in Hotel.

The same issue when we pack up and from Leh to Manali.

Is it recommended to hire just one car for the whole trip? Or, hire separately for Srinagar to Leh and Leh to Manali due to luggage constraints?

(P.S: We will take a bus from Manali to Delhi)

    2) Do you think we should pre-book hotels for the mentioned dates? Or we could just reach Leh and then find. we would be looking for decent budget stays (approx. 500per night).
We have thought we will book our hotel for duration we are there, and if for example we are doing night stay in Nubra Valley, we will still accomodation at Leh, and stay over at Nubra as next day we would be heading back. Is that way or?

    Thanks in advance.

    • Here are my replies:

      1) Yes, best is to hire two taxis. One which will drop you at Leh from Srinagar and then a Leh based taxi that will do entire circuit and drop you to Manali. Or You can get in touch with Ladakh based driver who can come and pick you from Srinagar and be with you till Manali.

Better hire a winger for you. Talk to the taxi guys if they can pack all the luggage on top of the Innova or Xylo. It will save you a lot. But 12 bags, man, that’s something 😉

      2) No, just book on the spot the night you are staying. If you see any issues, then rent one room where all luggage can be put though I see it unlikely. Secondly, if you OK to search a bit, no need to book in advance. Your taxi guys will be able to help you out

      • Hey Dheeraj,
Thanks for the response. We’ve spoken to Rigzin, all set as we leave in two days. Shall aim to write our whole experience, being photographers in the group, we hope to photo document the whole experience…

    1. taxi fares from srinagar to leh hiring a private taxi for six people?
    2. bike cost in and aroung leh per day per bike?

  7. Dear friend, please let me know shared Taxi rates from Srinagar to Leh. as i am alone to travel upto leh.

    Hi Dheeraj,
We are 6 people from Delhi, planning for a trip to leh by road aroun 6-7 June 2014, could you please suggest some economic and good hotel in leh. I have also to ask can we hire a Royal enfield for Nubra Valleu and could we return on same day or else where to stay there…

  9. Dear Sir,

I request your valuable input for the following Plan

we will be reaching Kashmir on 30th September and our return ticket is on 13th October from Leh.We are two adults and one kid travelling.

How much will be the cost for accomedation in house boat, cab charges for sithgseeing travelling to Leh.I want a personal cab and do not want to share

    Kindly Inform

  10. Hi Dheeraj,
I am planning a trip to Leh spiti – manali & Chandigarh . I will be flying to srinagar and then going ahead to leh from there. Will be reaching srinagar on 6 august and flying off from Chandigarh on the 18 Aug Can you suggest the best way and place to see and things to do.

    • Vineet, it will be hard to cover Spiti Valley with the number of days you have in hand. Hence, will suggest to keep the travel focused on Ladakh. You can check a very balanced and most common itinerary for Leh – Ladakh followed by many travellers including me at the link here for 13-14 days: Most Common Itinerary for Leh – Ladakh.
I know you are flying to Srinagar, so you can refer the itinerary from Srinagar day. Also, one day extra you have can be spent in Turtuk – Nubra Valley. So, instead of going to stay at Hunder/Diskit from Leh, first head to turtuk stay and then next day come back to stay at hunder / Diskit in nubra Valley.

  11. Hiii Deeraj,
I am planning to travel to Leh with my brother & parents (aged 56 & 59) in June end.
Is it safe for my parents to travel to leh, will their age be posing health risks at such high altitudes?
We are planning to arrive srinagar by flight and spend one and a half day there. then planning to move to Leh via kargil (night stay st kargil)via visiting magnetic hill & gurudwara pathar sahib. Is it feasible to travel from kargil to leh via this route in one day?
Next we are planning to go to Nubra with one night stay option. Will such high altitude be problem for my parents.
Next is it possible to visit Pangong lake in one day.
Finally we are planning to come to CHD via manali with stay option in Keylong.
Should we hire one cab for whole route. Which is the best econimcal way to hire for cabs. Is it possible to make online reservations. What will be the total cost of our tour.

    • RD, AMS does not correspond to age, sex, physical fitness of human beings. It can hit any one and at point even irrespective of the fact that a person has been any number of times to High altitude, he must follow the rules… so, it is always best to keep the gain in altitude slow and take plenty of water intake in the form of water, juices or other drinks.

Kargil to Leh is quite feasible and always suggested. Take one day rest before you plan to go to Nubra Valley. Then, while going to nubra Valley restrict your stay at Khardung La to bare minimum, say 8-10 minutes. While coming back, you can stay at Sarchu to break the journey evening for Manali – Leh Highway or even Jispa is good being more close to nature.

It is best if you can hire one cab but will suggest that you hire one from Srinagar for Srinagar to Leh and then hire a Ladakh taxi for the entire route up to Manali.

  12. LOVE RANKA on

    Hi Dheeraj,
Can you suggest me a nice road trip from delhi or manali to leh and back to delhi and the places to stay and what are the attractions , We are leaving in 1st week of june so tell me the best places in and on the way to ladakh..

  13. Hey dude thanks alot for sharing the taxi info.. I have my flight to delhi from bangalore on 30May i.e Friday.. and return flight from delhi on 11th June.. We are actually confused about how to make the plan successful. It will be very helpful if you can tell me keeping urself in place 🙂
we are planning to rent a car from delhi to manali and leh..

    • Punit, 10 days are less for a road trip to Leh as it takes 3 days to reach Leh from Manali and 3 days to come back, 1 day you need for acclimatization, rest and inner line permits in Leh. You have 3 days remaining in between which you can make a 3 day trip to Nubra Valley and 1 day trip to Pangong Tso.

    • Also, Taxis outside Ladakh are not allowed to do any sightseeing within Leh – Ladakh. You can use them for drop-in and take-away modes only. So, the taxi you are hiring locally must have private number plate otherwise you will have to again hire a taxi within Ladakh and pay for your local taxi without using it.

      • Thanks for your prompt response.. Actually it was very tough to get this 10 days leave :P.. Its okk We will enjoy our road trip..may be next time we can spend more time and explore more.. thanks again brother.. Will get in touch with you if i need any help 🙂

  14. Dude, first of all hats-off to you, giving such a informative feedbacks to every one.
Now after reading your comments and feedbacks. We(10 person) booked our flight delhi to srinagar. We will be there on 19 july around 4pm. and return filght is on 26july around 12 noon. Now we want to go to leh by taxi(self driven) or self driven bike. I know we are going on a peak season, does we need to get the bikes or car booked in future.
Can you find some agents, or send us the detail of the agents.
Personally I want to go on self driven taxi’s or bike. is it safe?
    Please suggest some iternary too
And can we bring our booze too as on many travel forum it is suggested to carry your lot when travelling in J&K.
Please email if you have something particular for us
    [email protected]
    Thanks in ADVANCE

    • Ankit, there is no self drive rented bikes or car available from Srinagar to Leh. You can reach leh and then hire bikes. Also, it takes two days to reach leh from srinagar and two days to come back. Considering you have just 6 days, I see just 2 days in Ladakh 🙁 … 1 day you need rest and acclimatize.

      • Thanks Dheeraj, I know we have very less time. But I think you understand its very difficult to take more than 7 days off from the office. Chalo doesnt matter. Any suggestions for leh. we have 2 nd half days which place to consider. And dont worry about the rest, we manage.
And if we take taxi from srinagar to leh how much it cost as we need two SUV.

        • Ankit, I hope you can manage AMS but it is something out of our control. Please keep your body hydrated. Of the 2.5 days, I will suggest half day local sightseeing, 1 day visit to Khardung La or Diskit, Nubra Valley and 1 day visit to Pangong Tso.

  15. Hi Deeraj…me n my other three frnz are planning to visit leh during mid may n we will be travelling through train from Delhi ….planning for a six day trip in leh …can u pl suggest o plan for us about d taxis n mudt visit places. …n pl let us know if its safe for only girls to travel…n we need to know bout d stay as well…we made a budget of around 35k per person

    • Sahana, are these 6 days in Leh – Ladakh only? It is safe to travel up there in Ladakh for all, AFAIK. Rest there is always a risk when we travel no matter where, that is always accompanied. 35K is more than good enough budget.

  16. KUNJAL MODH on

    • Kunjal, please use Small Caps as Upper Caps in e-Media means shouting 🙂 …

Regarding Leh in October, well number of days is fine BUT how are you planning to reach Leh? By road?

  17. Anjali Parjapat on

I plan to visit India next Holi 2015. Start from delhi to Srinagar (Pahalgam-Gulmarg-Sonamarg-Dal/Nigeen lake) and then take flight to Leh in begining of March. Is that possible to visit Pangong Tso from Leh in March? I really want to.. :p

  18. Pingback: Leh - Ladakh Taxi Rates 2014 - 15 - DeViL on WheeLs

  19. Hi,
thank you for all the taxi listings.
i am trying to get from delhi to leh and the dates i have to travel are sold out.
so i am considering flying to srinagar or manali and taking a taxi to leh and returning via the same way – taxi, then flight to delhi.

Do you have any suggestions which airport is best to fly into to take a taxi to leh?

Would the listed drivers you have here be willing to pick me up from the far cities of srinagar or manali or wherever?

what is the travel time from either of those cities or any other to leh (the closest)?

Is there any agent that could set up a ‘coach’ kind of situation – shared van, rather than just me (one person)?
    thank you

    • Rita, best is to fly to Srinagar both in respect to money being saved and above all considering acclimatization to combat the chances of getting hit with AMS in Ladakh. Fly to Srinagar and then take 2 day trip to Leh over Srinagar – Leh Highway with overnight halt at Kargil. There are shared taxis that ply on Srinagar – Leh highway and inside Ladakh too, you can use them for commute. You are alone and private taxis are very costly in Leh but you will be able to find the shared taxi without much fuss at all. There are lots of flyers which people put at cafes, dine-ins, restaurants, travel agent desks/shops/whiteboards wanting to share the taxis for different trips within Ladakh. Even travel agent organize such shared taxis trip as well but charge a little higher about Rs 200-300 more than it would ideally cost. So, in worst case you can always go back to them and book a seat for yourself. Gelling up with people in Ladakh is more or less easy because many people travel solo and look forward to meet new people and share cultural thoughts and values over the trip. No where else in the world you will find more smiling and helpful people as Ladakhis are 🙂

  20. Hey Dheeraj,
No doubt you are a veteran here. After reading the entire post, I am tempted to go to road trip to Leh as against earlier fly to Leh Plan. The only problem being limited days constraints. We are from Mumbai and have done return tickets to Chandigarh. We are reaching Chandigarh at 1PM on 14th of June and return flight at 6PM on 21st June. Could you please help us plan itinerary for the road trip…though very ambitious 🙁

    • Himani, you have just 6 days in hand. 3 days will be required to reach Leh via Manali from Chandigarh and 3 days to return back before 21st. I don’t think it is wise to travel for just being on road of Manali – Leh Highway for 6 days just for entering Ladakh and exiting out of it the very next day.

I am planning to go to leh on 27th Aug from mumbai through manali leh highway can u please suggest me my travel plan… I have a 15/16 days in this trip. we are total 6 members

    • Hi Mithun,

Firstly, I will suggest you that please plan it in other direction as going via Srinagar – Leh Highway will be much much easier on your body and help you acclimatize to the high altitude of Manali – Leh Highway. Also, it allows you to enjoy the beauty of Manali – Leh by splitting the journey almost evenly in two days which is very difficult in the other direction. Thirdly, it will allow you to fit Tso Moriri lake into the itinerary in better way. You can read more reasons on the link here

You can check a very balanced and most common itinerary for Leh – Ladakh followed by many travellers including me at the link here for 13-14 days: Most Common Itinerary for Leh – Ladakh.

For accommodation, check the nice, preferred list of accommodation options in entire Leh – Ladakh (Leh, Nubra Valley, Pangong Tso, Tso Moriri) including moderate and cheap budget hotels as well in the series of articles starting on the link here

  22. Hi Dheeraj! We’re planning to travel Leh at the end of May 2014 for 3 nights. 1st day after morning arrival we stay hotel to get the permit to visit Nubra and Pangong. Is this possible 2nd day we visit Nubra Valley and return back to Leh same day? And 3rd day visit Leh to Pangong and return back same day to Leh? 4th day return back to Delhi.

    • Hello Morshed,

Leh – Ladakh is a high altitude terrain and is not something that we just walk in and start exploring or running around. Our bodies need to adapt to the scarce oxygen levels at this high altitude and should be given enough of chance to adapt, acclimatize to this high altitude. The avoidance can produce fatal results. You need at least 2 days of complete rest in hotels, even stairs up/down is not recommended. One of those days when you just fly in, get into your room and just sit/relax in the room or lawn of the hotel doing nothing but rest… Second day involves light activities of short walks and rest. Above all keeping your body hydrated. All this if you have slept alright the previous day and are feeling good. Then finally on Day 3 you can venture out to explore but again restricting the fatigue or exertion. Dear 3 days is totally unpractical for Leh – Ladakh. I even consider 4-5 days not so good. If you are flying, you should have at least 6 days in IMHO else about 8-9 days of comfortable trip to Ladakh and get the return of expensive airfare to Leh
