Its time for yet another fun ride into the Himalayas. This time it means full enjoyment and relaxation in the lap of mother nature. The idea of the trip is simple i.e. enjoy the chilling himamlays traversing through Shimla to let wife explore the mall road for the first time. Then, head to Chindi to experience solitude exploring through Tattapani to enjoy riverside meals and Naldhera to visit 9-hole golf course sitting amidst pine trees. Then, from Chindi move to Kasol to experience great quality cuisines amidst a little Israeli culture. Finally completes the last leg of the trip moving to Naggar to enjoy a romantic day out at Naggar Castle. Here is the complete itinerary,

  • Day 1 — Delhi – Shimla
  • Day 2 — Shimla – Naldhera – Tattapani – Chindi (Karsog Valley) (Very relaxed drive with a few hours stopover at Tattapani to enjoy riverside meals and another stopover at golf course of Naldhera)
  • Day 3 — Chindi (Karsog Valley) – Kasol
  • Day 4 — Kasol – Naggar – Manali (Snow Point) – Naggar (Krishna temple at Naggar acting as a vantage point offering some mesmerizing views is a must visit this time)
  • Day 5 — Naggar – Delhi

  1. Dear Dheeraj ji,

I am very thankfull to you for the way you guide people. Please help me out to plan a 7 Nights/8 days trip to Shimla-Kullu-Manali-Kalka. We are 5 adults (two Senior Citizens) with one 5 year old child. Our plan goes as under:

18 Mar 2017: Kalka – Shimla, local tour & night stay
    19 Mar 2017: Shimla – Kullu
    20 Mar 2017: Kullu – Manikaran – Kullu
21 Mar 2017: Kullu – Manali, local tour & night stay
    22 Mar 2017: Manali – Rohtang Pass – Solang Valley – Manali
    23 Mar 2017: Manali – (not decided)
    24 Mar 2017: not decided
    25 Mar 2017: (unknown) – Kalka

We have already booked our tickets Delhi to Kalka to & fro tickets and not able to decide on where to stay on 23rd & 24th nights. We are not preffering Shimla to stay. Can we plan for Chindi?

    Please suggest something….

    • I will suggest to cancel the tickets while coming back from Kalka to Delhi. You should reach directly to Delhi by overnight volvo from Manali route to save time and energy.

Day 1 | Reach Shimla from by overnight volvo from previous night. Check-in and rest at hotel. In the second half explore local Shimla including Shimla Ridge, Mall Road, Lakkar Bazaar, Back to Hotel By Evening.
Day 2 | Around Shimla, a relaxing day. Jakhoo Temple, State Museum, Mall Road, Ridge etc. as you like or may be you can visit Kufri in the first half of the day and all this in the second half of the day.
Day 3 | Shimla – Narkanda – Hatu Peak – Narkanda – Shimla (a bit long day) or you can do Shimla – Kufri – Chail – Shimla (Little les hectic :))
      Day 4 | Shimla – Manali
Day 5 | Manali Local sightseeing which includes Hadimba Temple, Manu Temple, Mall Road, Local Monastery, Vashisth Hot Water Springs (never found it interesting) etc.
Day 6 | Manali – Snow Point either at Solang Valley or Marhi/Gulaba on the way to Rohtang Pass. Enjoy in snow and come back to Manali
Day 7 | Manali – Naggar Castle(stay at Naggar and enjoy the place. Very romantic with great views and food. Visit Roerich Musueum, Art Gallery and do not miss the hike to ancient Krishna Temple at the top)
Day 8 | Naggar Castle – Manali – Delhi. Checkout from Naggar Castle by noon. Since, the volvo to Delhi will be around 5.30 PM types, so either you can spend a sometime hanging around Naggar only and after lunch leave for Manali or you have the option to come back to Manali and hang around on Mall road and finally take the return bus. Or, you can also co-ordinate with bus HPTDC guys so that the bus pick you from the nearest pickup point for Naggar on the way to Delhi. Naggar Castle guys will arrange the taxi for the drop there.

** if you have time then try, Manali Sanctuary can also be covered as it is just about 2-3 KMs from Manali town and there is trail which starts from Manali Log Huts or Dhungri temple that leads you into the woods.

    Hi Dheeraj,

I am very happy about the way you guide people for their trips.I would really be thankful if you help me to plan a 5 Nights/6 days trip to Delhi- Chandigarh-simla-manali-Delhi. we are 2 adults with one 4 year old child. Would be thankful f you help to prepare an itinerary for the same.please mention the places to be visited around simla. Is it worth to spend 3 days in Simla and not go to manali as it will take lot of travelling time.

    Gunjan narang

    • Hi gunjan,

I will suggest you to skip Shimla and follow the following to plan to enjoy much more around Manali only

Day 1 – Reach Manali, take rest for half of the day and enjoy the walks on Mall road. (I assume that you will be reaching in the morning by Volvo)
Day 2 – Manali Local sightseeing which includes Hadimba Temple, Manu Temple, Mall Road, Local Monastery, Vashisth Hot Water Springs (never found it interesting), Hike the woods around Old Manali, Jogni Falls, Bijli Mahadev near Kullu etc.
Day 3 – Manali – Snow Point or Marhi/Gulaba on the way to Rohtang Pass. Enjoy in snow and come back to Manali. On the way back you can visit Solang Valley and do paragliding there.
Day 4 – Manali – Naggar Castle(stay at Naggar and enjoy the place)
Day 5 – Naggar Castle – Manali – Delhi (Checkout from Naggar Castle by noon. Since, the volov will be around 5.30 PM types, so either you can spend a sometime hanging around Naggar only and after lunch leave for Manali or come back to Manali and hang around on Mall road and finally take the return bus)

  3. Hello Dheeraj,

Really so happy to find all the information of H.P on your page.
Me and my frnds are planning a trip during last week of July. Its a 8 days trip and after doing lots of research on your page and some other sites, i have finalised the below given iteniary.

    Day 1 – Chandigarh – Shimla:
Day 2 – Shimla Naldera – tattapani – chindi (karsog valley)
Day 3 – Karsog valley to tirthan valley
Day 4 – Tirthan – we can check out GHNP
Day 5 – Tirthan to kasol ( hot springs in Manikaran)
Day 6 – kasol to Malana (Malana got 4 hrs hiking )
Day 7 – Malana to Shoja
Day 8 – shoja to Kasauli
Day 9 – kasauli to Chandigarh – and on same day Back to mumbai

We don’t have our car or not going to drive on these routes. Hence, I wanted to know is public transport (like bus/taxi) easily available between these points. Also we are into budget travelling hence can you suggest any homestays.

    • Swati, the plan sound good enough to go. Public transport will be available but it will be difficult to get back to back travel to these places. Had it been the case that you had ample of days you could plan the flow of travel to these places in public transport after enquiring about it when you are there. However, the plan above is more suited to Self Drive or Private taxi not public transport.

      • Dheeraj,

Thanks a lot for your reply. Will surely look into the travelling options once we go there.

  4. Hi,

I am planning to go with my family somewhere around Shimla, basically somewhere quite and peaceful but only for 4 days maximum including travel from Delhi. I was reading your posts, and zeroed in on Chindi. But just wanted to confirm how much time does it take to go from Shimla to Chindi , every page around net has a different estimate so if you could give a better idea? And do we need more time to see around Chindi or If that is not the case, one day there should be sufficient and one day we can stay around tattpani. The reason i am saying is that we would like to stay near the river. So if you have any other suggestion please let me know.

  5. Hi Dheeraj,

      • Hi Dheeraj,

I want to visit Narkanda in month of July(1st or 2nd week) with My faimly and 2 years baby.I want to drive by car from Delhi.I have totel 5 DAys.Can I cover Chindi in that.Or please suggest any other place near by where I can relex and get view of Himalaya if possible.Alos suggest the Itinerary adn places to stay.I would prefer cotteges or may be great view locations.

        • Kapil, yes of course you can cover Chindi too with Narkanda in 5 days. Spend couple of days at Narkanda and then move to Chindi/Karsog from there. Best is to go with HPTDC property at Chindi – Hotel Mamleshwar. You can dosomething like this

          Day 1 | Delhi – Narkanda
Day 2 | Narkanda and around
          Day 3 | Narkanda – Naldhera – Tattapani – Chindi
Day 4 | Around Chindi and Karsog
Day 5 | Chindi to Delhi

        • Thanks Dheeraj for the reply. One more thing…Is this worth to visit Chindi in July or do you suggest any other good place near by.

        • Kapil, Chindi is good place to visit in July in lower hills as most of the hills will be alike during this period. Chindi will be calm and peaceful plus will have apple orchards loaded.

  11. Hi Dheeraj, We are three friends visiting Himachal Pradesh for the first time from Bombay from February 5-13, 2013. Can you please suggest an itinery. We would want to viait a good mix of popular and off beat locations. Accomadation preference would be 3-4 star properties with camping for 1-2 nights. Thank you!

    • Hi Radhika,

Well, in that case it is better that you follow something similar to what’s mentioned in the article above. You can choose to stay with HPTDC Properties at Narkanda, Chindi and Chail, may be Shimla too at Peterhoff but there are tons of options at Shimla/Naldhera ranging from 3-4 stars. Near Narkanda, you can even stay with Krish Rauni Resort at Matiana, though not 3-4 star but very decent and run by quite nice family of Mr. Kishore. You can refer my name to him, if required as generally they accept families since their own family lives along side.

You have about 7 days and you can do something like 2 days in Shimla, 1 day tour to Chail, 2 days at Narkanda and visit Sarahan from there may be and 2 days for Chindi and Karsog.

      Dheeraj Sharma

  12. Hi Dheeraj our family of 4 is coming to kufri. We have a guest house there. We will be there for 5 days. Itinery suggessions???? We r coming from Bangalore so would like to get as much of the place as we can.

    • Hello Divya,

For 5 days you can follow something like below:

Day 1 | Reach Shimla/Kufri. Check-in and rest at hotel. In the second half explore local Shimla including Shimla Ridge, Mall Road, Lakkar Bazaar, Back to Hotel By Evening.
Day 2 | Around Shimla, a relaxing day. Jakhoo Temple, State Museum, Mall Road, Ridge etc. as you like.
      Day 3 | Kufri – Narkanda – Hatu Peak – Narkanda – Kufri
Day 4 | Day visit to Chail
Day 5 | May be a day visit to Naldhera – Tattapani – Chindi from Kufri

      Dheeraj Sharma

  13. Hi Dheeraj, Appreciate your knowledge about Himachal in Particular. I am planning to take a group of approx 40 people to an offbeat destination. Problem lying with accommodation. Can we get 4 star kind of hotels in nearby places for the group. Please suggest..

      • Hi.. Travel would be by road ex Chandigarh. I would like you to suggest the offbeat destinations for 03 Nights/ 4 days. Major requirement is that i need a decent stay option for the group. Tks

        • Hmm… Offbeat with a luxury stay accommodating that large capacity!! Difficult. Though there are many offbeat places I can suggest but most of them will fail on 4 star accommodation front with stay for more than 40 people. If you are OK with the facility of HPTDC then you can check Hotel Mamleshwar at Chindi which was decent though not 4 star standards. Otherwise, you will find some properties between Mashorba – Naldhera – Tattapani route which can accommodate such large capacity and may have 3-4 start facilities.

          Dheeraj Sharma

  14. Hi Dheeraj,
Your tour to Shimla, Chindi, Karsog seems to be serene and beautiful as in picture. I am planning a visit to the places by end of December and want to understand the accommodation facilities in these places as per your itinerary for 5 days.
Also is it a good time to visit the places?

    • Hello Bhawna,

Well, yeah I am back again a day before from Barot and Chindi this time. Lovely peaceful and calm vacation with family it was 🙂 🙂 … Well I stayed at HPTDC Properties at Chindi. You can opt for it and there is good discount too as of now. Better make Chindi as base and explore rest of the places around.

I would prefer to avoid Shimla and will suggest that you include Matiana where you can stay at Krish Rauni Resort, about an hour drive from Shimla (45 KMs towards Narkanda). Kishore Uncle knows me well, you can refer DoW or Dheeraj if you want. You can check the brief review in the community link: Matiana, near Narkanda

  15. Hi,
I want to go to Chindi from Chandigarh for 3 days trip on 2 wheelar, pl advice me route chart, stays & visiting places.

    • Hello Himanshu,

You can follow the route as Chandigarh – Shimla – Naldhera – Tattapani – Chindi. You can either come back the same route or go towards Mandi and come back from Manali – Chandigarh route to do the circuit.

      Dheeraj Sharma

  16. Hi Dheeraj,
Can you please tell me in detail how can we reach Kasol by bus,and is it a good time to go there

    • Shruti, you can reach upto Bhunter, Kullu from the overnight volvo which runs between Manali – Delhi and Chandigarh. From bhunter there are local shared taxis as well as private taxis that you will be able to find for Kasol.

  18. Amrita Agarwal on

    Hi Dheeraj,
I’m planning 1 week trip to Himachal Pradesh in Mid June with family by Car from Delhi.
I wanna cover Chandigarh in also.
    Was planning like :
    I’ve few queries:
    1. Is going by Car till Rohtang pass Safe?

    2. Reading above I wanna visit Tirthan valley as well. Can you please help me in choosing my itenary. I would prefer scenic places. Have also not seen Manali and Rohtang pass earlier.

    • Hello Amrita,

      1. You will not be allowed to go to Rohtang Pass in your own car, if it is Delhi registered or anything outside Himachal. You will only be allowed upto Manali.
      2. You can follow a below plan for 7 days itinerary including Tirthan Valley and Manali

Day 1 – Leave from Delhi for Manali. Take turn from Aut where you can get to reach Tirthan Valley (about 40-45 KMs from there)
Day 2 – Tirthan Valley – Relaxing day besides Tirthan River
      Day 3 – Tirthan Valley
      — Enjoy the walks in the GHNP. There are two Waterfalls in the woods.
Day 4 – Tirthan Valley – Naggar Castle (about 50 KMs)
      — Stay at Naggar Castle and enjoy the place. Very romantic with great views and food. Visit Roerich Musueum, Art Gallery and do not miss the hike to ancient Krishna Temple at the top
      — It is one of the most romantic places in Himachal
Day 5 – Naggar Castle – Manali (about 30 KMs)
      — Manali Local sightseeing including Manu Temple, Hadimba Temple, Local Monastery, Shopping at Mall road etc etc
      Day 6 – Manali – Rohtang Pass – Solang Valley – Manali
      Day 7 | Manali – Delhi

  19. Hi Dheeraj,
you should include Kheer Ganaga in your 5 spots. it is awesome place to visit and it is in proximity of Tirthan Valley.

    • Thanks Amit, yes, would write another post on 5 more offbeat places to visit in Himachal Pradesh and include that in it. Right up there in that article along with its low places Kalga, Puga, Tosh 🙂

  20. Hi Dheeraj,
I need to plan a trip with my family to Himachal in March/April, I have been to few places like shimla, Dharamshala and McLeod ganj etc but dont want any of the crowded places. I need to spend time with family in a calm environment, may be a small town or a village with a dhaba to eat:-) but with nice views etc and no or very less tourists. Please suggest

    • Deepak, I will suggest that you try Tirthan Valley. Stay at Sringi Vatika for basic experience or try booking Raju Bharti Guest House for April now only as it remains booked all round the year and that too very well in advance. You will thoroughly enjoy the Tirthan River flowing in front eand walks in the Great Himalayan National Park as the Spring season is best for it.

      Dheeraj Sharma

      • Thanks Dheeraj, Sringi Vatika looks really nice and interesting probably what I wanted 🙂 what is the difference between these two places and Chindi?

        • Deepak, Chindi does not have much to offer apart from couple of days of relaxation from the mad crowd. While near Shringi Vatika you can either go towards Jalori Pass and trek to even Serolskar lake from there to enjoy the walk. Otherwise you can relax around Tirthan River OR you can enjoy the walks in Great Himalayan National PArk. Do not outweigh Raju Bharti experience. It is one of top 100 places in India to stay right in the lap of mother nature !!

      • Hi Dheeraj, Do you have contact details for both Raju guest house and Sringi Vatika? I have search on the internet but couldn’t find any contact details.

        • Deepak, can you please check: Raju Bharti’s Guest House (Phone Number: 09418149808 (01903-225008)

PS: Sorry for delayed reply as I was traveling Ladakh for last couple of weeks.

          Dheeraj Sharma

  21. Hi Dheeraj, Want your help in coming up with a itinerary for 9 days in Himachal Pradesh. I am basically from Bangalore and would be traveling till Chandigarh by Flight.I have a itenerary in mind, please advise.
Day1 – Blore to Chandigarh, Chandigarh to Amritsar – Waghah Border

    Day 2 – Amritsar – Golden Temple

    Chandigarh to Manali

Day 3 – Sight seeing in Manali
Day 4 – Solang Valley / Rohtang Pass
    Day 5 – Manali – Kullu – Shimla

    Day 6 – Shimla

Day 7 – Shimla to Chandigarh

      Dheeraj Sharma

      • Thanks Dheeraj. Here is my plan and queries.
Mar 23 : Arrive to Chandigarh at 6.30 pm, travel to Amritsar

Mar 24 : Golden Temple, Waghah border in the evening
Travel to Dalhousie and overnight stay

        March 27 : Manali

        March 30 – SHimla
March 31 – Shimla to chandigarh, Chandigarh to Blore
        My queries are,
        1. Is it right time to visit all these places ?
        2. Is Dalhouise worth visiting ? Or should we come back to Chandigarh and go to Manali.
        3. Are there any places around Manali which are less explored and adventorous ?
        4. Is it worth spending time in Dalhouise and Dalhouise to Manali travel or should we spend that time in Manali ?
        5. Is is worth visiting Shimla ?
        6. we have time of 9 days starting 23 March (start from Blore) – 31 March(reach Blore) – please help in coming up with the plan. Our main aim is to visit in and around Manali and do some out of the box traveling.

should we go from tirthan valley to shimla through 'chindi-karsog-tatta pani' or 'jalouri pass-naldhera'….which of these two is more adventurous??
