Manali Leh Bus

Manali Leh Bus

Well, the bus plies on the ever scenic Manali – Leh for tourists only. Hence, unlike HRTC bus, the HPTDC Manali Leh bus stops over at most of the tourists locations including all the passes on the route from Manali to Leh like Baralacha La, Rohtang Pass, Nakee La, Lachulung La, Taglang La. The bus also stop over at various dhabas on the route to have tea/snacks. This allows you as a tourist to enjoy the beauty of Manali – Leh Highway and take pictures on the way as well. It is always suggested to travel prepared with at least one heavy jacket and one light jacket over Manali – Leh route along with other woollens and essential things to carry on Ladakh trip. If you are relying on buses only for your Ladakh trip, well you can check: Rates & Time table of Bus Services in Leh – Ladakh and if you are interested to know more about Manali – Leh Highway, please read: Travel Guide for Manali – Leh Highway
In the end, like I always say, AMS is the key for any trip to Ladakh and going from Manali to Leh, one has to suffer mild to moderate AMS symptoms for sure. Hence, do read about: Acute Mountain Sickness and Importance of Acclimatization

    Hi Dheeraj,

I read your article on bus of HPTDC from Manali to Leh. You said that they will stop on tourist attractions between manali to leh highway, But I confirmed this by calling to HP office in Manali and they said no to it. I have already booked my seats in the bus for this July. Please guide me on this.

    • Hi Chirag,

Where did you call? HPTDC Office or HRTC Office? HPTDC is the tourism department and their buses do stop at tourist locations and passes. Not that they will stop anywhere you want but for tourists places, they do stop. On the other hand, HRTC is the local transport department of Himachal whose buses do not stop. They are regular commute buses for locals.

      • Chirag Jain on

        Hi Dheeraj,

Thanks for your reply. I had called to HPTDC office only at Manali and asked for their tourist stoppages at the route but they denied. I then called at their office in Leh and they told that yes it will stop at high passes. So I am confused now.

        • Don’t worry Chirag, that’s how our sarkari offices work you know 😉 .. But, I will believe the Leh one because I know that the HPTDC bus does stop at all high passes. If you will try to search DoW Community travel tales forum, you will be able to find the travel tales of people who did the trip on HPTDC bus

  10. Hi Dheeraj,
I m planning to visit ladakh on 1 july for 11 days via manali route and back frm srinagar to mumbai ….. Pls suggest itinerary for it.
    My plan….
1 july will travel to chandigarh frm mumbai via train
2 july will reach chandigarh in eveng nd then to manali by bus. Morning will reach manali
I will travel to leh by bus.For further travel nd sightseeing pls suggest….. Do I hv sufficient days with me…?

    • Day 1 | Delhi – Manali/Solang Valley
      — Better stay at Solang Valley and avoid Manali as sleeping at Solang Valley does help in acclimatization
      — If going by own car, get the permit made in advance to drive on Manali – Rohtang Pass road through hotel/travel agent in Manali
      — Overnight at Manali/Solang Valley

      Day 2 | Manali/Solang Valley – Keylong/Jispa
      — It is always better to stay either at Keylong/Jispa so that you do not feel sick or hit by AMS.
      — Avoid sleeping at Sarchu at any cost while going to Leh from Manali because your body will not be acclimatized by the time you reach there.
      — I prefer staying at Jispa more because Keylong gives the feeling of a town while Jispa is more closer to nature having Bhaga river running just aside the Manali – Leh Highway at Jispa.
      — Overnight at Keylong/Jispa

      Day 3 | Keylong/Jispa – Leh
      — Leave Keylong/Jispa early next morning, say by 4/5 AM types, so that you reach Leh in the evening.
      — Overnight at Leh

Day 4 | Leh Local Sightseeing + Inner Line Permits
      — To know the about the places to visit check the link: Travel Guide for Local Sightseeing of Leh Town in Ladakh
      — Overnight at Leh

      Day 5 | Leh – Khardung La – Diskit – Leh
      – Head for Nubra Valley very early in the day and come back by late evening after visiting Deskit. If you have time go little further and see Hunder sand dunes too
      – On the way enjoy a cup of soup at Highest Motorable Pass (as claimed) Khardung La
      – Diskit has monasteries with tallest lord Buddha statue and Hunder has sand dunes and bacterian camel safari

Day 6 | Leh – Pangong Tso Lake – Leh
      – Day trip to Pangong Tso
      – Overnight at Leh

      Day 7 | Leh – Lamayuru – Kargil
      — Cover Mulbekh Maitrey, Lamayuru Moanstery, Lunar Landscapes
      — On the way you can also see Gurudwara Pather Sahib, Magnetic Hills, Confluence at Nimmu
      — Overnight at Kargil

      Day 8 | Kargil – Drass – Zozi La – Sonamarg – Srinagar
      — Enjoy the vistas enroute
      — Have late drunch meal at Sonamarg
      — Overnight at Srinagar

      Day 9 | Srinagar – Jammu / Pathankot
      — Overnight at Jammu / Pathankot

      Day 10 | Jammu / Pathankot – Delhi
      — Back Home

  11. Hi Guys,

Any feedback on the night stay in Chandrabhaga hotel? Especially since we are going to be sleeping in tents and using common toilets?

If you dont recommend this can I book any other hotel in Keylong?

    Thanks a lot

    • Preeti, they are OK OK types only I will say or may be just touching average. If you like not to sleep in tents and do not have much budget issues, you should opt for some other low budget guest house. Nalwa Guest House on Manali Leh Highway is one such budget option of stay in Keylong

  12. I am planning a solo trip to Leh on june 3rd 2016 ,in delhi – srinagar -leh- manali route.
Will there be any other bus service in leh to Manali route on june first week , since you mention hptdc will start only by july

I am planning to go to Pangong , kardungla, is there chance to get share taxi/bus for this route ?
Also can i book bikes from leh after reaching there or should i book early . Currently planning to take after reaching . since i am planning to take shared taxi/bus in most of the journey my arrival dates are not sure.

  13. That’s great,
Last year I started my trip to Leh/Ladakh(My first trip to Ladakh) that too solo with the bus (HPTDC Semi-deluxe).
No doubt, it’s good opportunity to meet many people and make life time friends 🙂

    @Dheeraj: I think it’s 2700 INR this time.
I just checked it while checking to book.
