The work from the Lahaul side is in full swing, we hope that the road link between Keylong and Kaza will be restored whithin nest 10 days,” Vir Singh Thakur, Deputy Commissioner, Lahaul and Spiti said.

    Read More Below:

Blockade of Kunzum Pass (14000 ft) in Lahaul and Spiti district has hit the state’s adventure travel industry as the important road link between Lahaul and Spiti valleys has been lost due to heavy snowfall this year, travel industry people based in Lahaul said.

Heavy snowfall has delayed the snow clearing operations in the valley.

As the tourists and locals are being forced to take 650 km-long Shimla-Jalodi pass route to reach Spiti (Kaza), adventure lovers and foreign tourists in particular, are avoiding this destination this year.

“The distance between (district headquarters) Keylong and Kaza is just 150 kms when the Kunzum Pass road is open. As the Kunzum Pass is yet to be cleared, there is no bus facility between the two valleys. Foreign tourists are cancelling their Spiti tour and are heading to Leh which is open,” says Ajay who runs a travel agency in Keylong.

Kunzum Pass blockade has worried the travel industry people who are losing business everyday. State’s politicians are also a worried a lot as Spiti is part of Mandi Lok Sabha constituency where a by-election is scheduled this month.

They are not able to tour to the valley as the election campaigns are in full swing.

“Heavy snowfall in the valley has delayed the road clearance work on both sides of Kunzum Pass. The work from the Lahaul side is in full swing, we hope that the road link between Keylong and Kaza will be restored whithin nest 10 days,” Vir Singh Thakur, Deputy Commissioner, Lahaul and Spiti said.

Manali-Leh and other roads in the valley are maintained by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) which has already cleared the Zojila Pass (188 ft), Khardungla (18,700ft), Bara-lacha la (16000 ft) and Rohtang pass (13050 ft).

Kunzum Pass is the gateway to Spiti valley which provides shortest road link (150 km) between the two valleys. This pass also provides a glimpse of Bara-Sigri glacier which is second longest glacier in the world.

    Hi,

Talks are, most likely the road between Losar/Kaza & Grampoo/Manali will open by 15th June……as beyond Batal and between Chhota Dhara ( Strech of 17 kms), there are only 2-3 glacier points to be cleared……snow at other points has more or less melted.

    Anonymous on #26187

The road to Chandra Tal aka The Lake of The Moon @ 14100 ft odd, could open by 17th – 20th June……the road is under the authority/supervision of Forest Deptt., hopefully they move aggressively/swiftly towards this particular job.

On the other hand, Trekking path from Kunzum La/Pass to Chandra Tal is open/doable/more or less the snow has melted…..just be slightly cautious while attempting it presently/in next couple of days.

For the travelers, planning to visit/drive or ride to Kunzum La/Pass, presently/in couple of days…….please do it/attempt it in the first half of the day and descend from the same/ reach Losar, before 1pm – 2 pm, as there is ‘Pagal Nalah’ which is getting formed(Water level of a stream rises )/literally cutting of the road, around 3 kms from Losar towards Kunzum La, in the late afternoon & evening……Have a Safe Drive/Ride, Cheers!!

    Hi,

There is a link http://www.bcmtouring.com/forum/india-travel-news-f65/pagal-nallah-no-more-t19150/, that mentions a bridge built on this. Am not sure if we are talking about the same.
I’m doing Kaza to Manali on 28/06/13 as per my itenary https://devilonwheels.com/india/plan-lahaul-spiti-kinnaur-trip/topic37.html . I’m already anxious and this adds to the list. :?

Dheeraj bhai can you please give me some encouraging thoughts…

    Vipin.

    Anonymous on #26190

    Hi Vipin,

Reference the picture of the bridge in the link/post……This is not the same/in fact there is no bridge there ……. The one I have mentioned is a temporarily One/Nalah……which has started coming in this year only , because of excessive snow fall this winters.
Well,I doubt it will be that bad in the last week of June when you plan to move ahead of Losar to Manali.

Also, to add to that Vipin, guess Sahil has referenced it Pagal Nalla but it is just a Nalla in Spiti that is violent at this time but mostly all ferocious water crossings or nallas are called by that name only by locals I believe.

The one you are referring in the link above is of Ladakh near Pangong Tso lake :D … That is not Spiti. Pagal Nalla of Pangong Tso was largely famous by that name THOUGH I believe locals call most nallas that goes ferocious as Pagal Nalla :)

On the other hand, do not feel anxious just remember that when my dzire can do it, people can do it in Santro, with little caution and care you will do it with your XUV without much fuss :D

    12th June 2013.

As I write, GREF chaps are busy clearing 1st Glacier point ahead of Batal towards Chotta Dhara…….if they continue like this, the road may open by proposed date of 15th June, as mentioned earlier.

Yes, Robin there are taxis available which will take you to these places easily. A round trip to Hikkim, Komik, Langza will cost you about 1200 bucks and similar prices will be there from Ki,Kibber, Gette too. You can travel bu local buses to Pin Valley and then come back in taxi may be if required or can decide between them after confirming the prices.

    13/6/2013……

Due to bad weather for past couple of days @ Losar and beyond @ Kunzum/Batal…..the road clearing work has/had slowed down…….
Now GREF, has kept 17th June as a new target date, to open Losar/Kunzum – Manali road.

BTW, they have almost cut through/opened the 1st Glacier Point after Batal

Just came back from losar on 13th. The road condition from losar to kunzum top and then to batal are quite bad. In addition to this there was fresh snowfall ar kunzum top on 14th making the road even worse. Met a BRO person at Losar , according to him the entire route wont open till 21st
