Day by Day Itinerary for this Ladakh Tour
Here is a detailed plan for this self drive expedition to Ladakh.
Day 1- Delhi – Amritsar
We flag-off our expedition at Delhi and ride the highway straight to Amritsar in a convoy. We’ll make rest and food stops along the way as we reach Amritsar. We spend the rest of the evening enjoying Amritsar’s delicacies and getting to know the rest of the convoy better. A night visit to the Golden Temple is a must as we seek our blessings before our expedition.
Day 2 – Amritsar – Udhampur
We start the day early in the morning and drive up towards the mountains. This is the first climb of the trip, although small, is the perfect warm-up for the climbs in store in the coming days. Along the way, we pass through the Chenani Tunnel and enter the peaceful town of Udhampur.
Day 3 – Udhampur – Sonamarg
A beautifully scenic route that gives us a view of the mountains that lie ahead. We drive past Srinagar and head further up to Sonamarg. Nestled within the imposing Himalayan mountains Sonamarg gives you a glimpse of the striking snow-capped mountains of the Himalayas.
Day 4 – Sonamarg – Kargil
Relatively at the same altitude, the drive will further help us acclimatize to the altitude. We cross the mighty Zoji La and enjoy a cold shiver at Drass – the coldest inhabited village in India.
We will also stop by the War Memorial at Drass to pay tribute to the brave soldiers who sacrifice everything to protect our borders. We promise a day filled with emotion, beautiful roads and beautiful views.
Day 5 – Kargil – Leh
A scenic drive with a reasonable altitude gain, we drive on Fotu La, the highest point on the Srinagar-Leh highway. Along the way, we will also enjoy the mysterious pull of Magnetic Hill and more.
Day 6 – Leh
We spend a day at Leh to rest and take in the sights and sounds of this beautiful city. A visit to the Leh Palace, the old town market and the maze like lanes are must dos in Leh. Don’t forget to stock up on souvenirs to take back for your loved ones.
Day 7 – Leh – Hunder
We make our way further up north towards Hunder. We drive through Khardung La, the world’s highest all-weather motorable pass. We also visit the Diskit Gompa, the oldest and largest Buddhist Monastery in the Nubra Valley. We end our day at Hunder, which is home to the famed sand dunes and the double hump Bactrian camel.
Day 8 – Hunder – Pangong Tso
It’s a stunning drive to the magnificent Pangong Tso which is our stop for the night. We enjoy the sunset at the mesmerising lake, watching as the setting sun transforms the lake through different shades of the blue. Click pictures of the 3 Idiots scene or load up on pictures of Instagram, there’s no shortage of photo opportunities here!
Day 9 – Pangong Tso – Hanle
Another day of scenic routes, challenging terrain and a picturesque destination of Hanle, home to the world’s highest observatory and the perfect place to watch the stars dance in the night sky. Get your cameras ready for star trails that will be wallpaper worthy!
Day 10 – Hanle – Tso Moriri
Tso Moriri, or Mountain Lake, is the largest of the high altitude lakes that resides completely within Indian Territory. The lake is fed by springs from the snow-melt from the adjacent mountains and is truly a sight to behold. The sheer beauty of the lake will bring tears to your eyes.
Day 11 – Tso Moriri – Keylong
Our drive to Keylong takes us out of the Ladakh Region and into Himachal Pradesh. On the route, we drive through the incredibly straight roads at More Plains and the challenging twisty Gata Loops.
Day 12 – Keylong – Manali
We drive down the incredibly scenic and beautiful Rohtang Jot as we make our way down to Manali, our stop for the night. Manali is the perfect halt to look back at the memories created over the past few days and catch one last glimpse of the imposing mountains as we make our way back home.
Day 13 – Manali – Chandigarh
We drive down the NH3, past Kullu and Mandi as we make our way to Chandigarh for the night. We load up on some proper Punjabi food all through the day.
Day 14 – Chandigarh – Delhi
The final day of the expedition – we drive to Delhi where we will conclude our expedition. Here’s where the missing of the mountains, brilliant skies, superb weather, and the company of the convoy. Don’t say we didn’t warn you. Get ready for teary-eyed goodbyes.
Meet Your Drive Captains of this Ladakh Self Drive Trip
The Ladakh experience can only be heightened by the person who leads you there. In all RTC drives, the driving captain plays a very important role in getting the experience unique to his personality imprinted on the drive.
This year your drive captains are 3 stalwarts and extremely experienced travellers
Neeraj Sinha (Drive Captain for July)
Neeraj Sinha goes by the name Yayawar, meaning Vagabond. He is one. Loves to travel, loves the mountains. He is a self-confessed mountain man, having roamed the nooks and crannies of the Himalayan range from the easternmost point to the westernmost.
But his alter ego is that of a technologist (he tries to keep this a secret, lest we give him more work to do). There isn’t a place in Ladakh; he wouldn’t know. Known to spot out places; and gets deep into the history of places in Ladakh – he is a walking talking Wikipedia.
A biker and SUV off roader, Neeraj has been to Ladakh numerous times and is an absolute people person. Ask him anything and he will have an answer for you!
Vineet Rajan (Drive Captain for June and September)
Vineet is known to lead the most well-disciplined convoys. Over the last decade, there aren’t many places that he hasn’t explored on bike or Thar. Add to that his love to meet and interact with people, you get a potent combination.
A big foodie so prepares to taste some of the wildest and tastiest meals on your Ladakh trip with Vineet. He is a serial entrepreneur, and his startups include IndiBlogger, the world’s largest platform for Indian Bloggers and ScoutMyTrip, an exciting and award-winning Travel Itinerary planning platform.
With Vineet, you know you will start and end at the right time, with ample of time to explore the beautiful scenery.
Deepak Ananth (Drive Captain for August)
One of the most experienced drive captains in India – having led over 100 expeditions all over India, and numerous short ones. Over 500,000 km of highway driving over the years; and there no car not driven by this gentleman.
Core team member of RTC India, and the CEO of ScoutMyTrip; Deepak will show you a very different side of Ladakh – more food, more experiences and definitely a lot of furries along the way!
With Deepak, you will never frown. Every pitstop will be a laugh riot, provided you can understand them!

About The RoadTrips Co.
The RoadTrips Co started in Feb 2018, for families, couples, kids, pets and pretty much anyone with access to a vehicle to drive.
In the last 15 months, The RoadTrips Co has been in existence – it has grown to 19 cities and over 6000 members. During this time we organized over 400 drives too! What started as a club is no longer one – it’s become a community. With a technology backing of a website and intuitive mobile apps on both Android and iOS which lists all drives from a city to allow members to connect with other like-minded travelers, today The RoadTrips Co is taking a leap and a big one at that.
We’ve come to strongly believe that that it’s not about the destination or even the journey anymore but all about the people one travels with. The member who joined us over the last one year and have experienced what we like to call ‘Camaraderie on wheels’, will continue mentoring first-timers, new car owners, young couples, first-time parents who are traveling with their toddlers, or pet owners.
