Srinagar Leh Highway Status 2018

In a good news received today, the snow clearance operations for Srinagar Leh Highway has begun from today and all the adventure enthusiasts should be excited for their upcoming trip to Leh – Ladakh. The Srinagar Leh Highway Status 2018 is still closed but BRO has started the snow clearance operations from Gagangeer village about 18 KMs from Sonamarg where snow is less this year and it is expected to clean up the snow on 12 KM stretch in next week or so, of course, weather permitting. However, the 30 KM of the stretch from Sonamarg to Zojila Pass zero point will take some time and effort before clearing up Srinagar Leh Highway. This year there hasn’t been a significant amount of snowfall in all over the Himalayas but still, I assume that BRO will surely be facing challenges to clear the snow, especially from the deadly Zojila Pass.

The 434 KM long Srinagar – Leh Highway is the lifeline for connectivity to Kargil and further Leh – Ladakh. The only other route to Leh – Ladakh is the 474 KM long Manali – Leh Highway whose status for the year can track on the thread here. Srinagar – Leh Highway generally opens and gets stabilized by the second week of May and last year in 2017 the highway opened on the first week of May. However, this year it seems that the Srinagar – Leh Highway will open a bit early and gets stabilized by the first week or May or late April, of course, weather permitting. Please keep in mind that even when this road to Ladakh gets open early, it needs at least couple of weeks to settle or get stabilized from initial snow sliding that happens due to quick melting of snow. So, please do not rush to Ladakh by road as soon as the highway is thrown open rather wait for a couple of weeks to let it stabilize 😉 … This will ensure safe passage for you and avoid any unforeseen mishaps.

As per the past years, I will be starting this sticky post for the Srinagar Leh Highway Status 2018 which so many adventure enthusiasts await every year. However, instead of updating the main article here at DoW Blog, I will keep the updated progress in the DoW Community thread for the same for better tracking of updates. A forum topic always helps in better updates tracking as well as collation of such updates in time organized manner. Hence, for all updates on Srinagar – Leh Highway status 2018, please stay tuned to the topic in DoW Community: Srinagar – Leh Highway Status 2018 | DoW Community Thread

Srinagar Leh Highway Status 2018

Once the Srinagar – Leh road opens, I may not be that active in updating the status because of these roads close and open on a frequent basis. It is barely impossible for a single tiny soul like me to update this information on a daily basis once the road gets open, so please request you to excuse me on that front and accept my apologies :)… However, if there is some major blockade of 3 – 4 days, I will try to surely update such information about Srinagar – Leh highway status. That is another reason to keep updated to DoW Community Thread for the same.

I hope as per the last year, this year as well this article thread will be useful in planning your journey on Srinagar – Leh Highway and further to Leh – Ladakh.

Srinagar – Leh Highway Status = CLOSED | Update Date: 1st March, 2018

Srinagar, 1st March 2018: Border Roads Organisation began snow clearance operation on Wednesday on the 12-km Gagangeer-Sonamrag stretch of Srinagar-Leh highway, the only road linking Ladakh with rest of Jammu and Kashmir. The road was closed in December last year after heavy snowfall.

BRO officials said if weather permits, the snow clearance work will be completed in the next few days.

“Several snow cutter machines, dozers have been pressed into work,” said captain Kushal Sharma of BRO.
He said this year snow was less compared to last year from Gagangeer side. Snow clearance will be tougher on the 30-km road stretch up to Zero Point of Zojilla from Sonamarg as more snow had accumulated along the stretch.

  1. Dear Subbu

Hi, I am a certified A Level Mountaineer, a hard core trekker and an avid traveller. I am almost a native (now) of Ladhakh. You have 99% chances of bumping into me during your travel because I will be there all of May, June and July and back again on End of September till December 5th :). Find me on Insta (tina_the_soul_traveller).

Was reading through your post. Your plan is pretty much doable (also as mentioned by Dheeraj), however, what catches my apprehension, is that, you have 3 kids and I see that theres only ONE DAY (close to 24 hours) that you will be relaxing in Leh. Rest all the days you are “On the roads”!!

My suggestion to you is to take one more day (12-18 hours of rest before you begin your return trip from Leh to Jispa. I am not aware of your kids’ ages, however, I will suggest you take one more day’s rest. 🙂

All The Best for your travel!

Still, need to work out on the complete plan near Leh and Manali. But arrival time and exit are almost frozen. Please suggest

    • You can follow the plan below:

05/04/2018 Friday Leh – Nubra Valley
05/05/2018 Saturday Nubra Valley – Pangong Tso
05/06/2018 Sunday Pangong Tso – Leh
05/07/2018 Monday Leh – Tso Moriri
      05/08/2018 Tuesday Tso Moriri – Sarchu/Jispa
      05/09/2018 Wednesday Reach Manali.

Please don’t go by the dates, as Manali – Leh Highway most likely will not be open that early in the season.

      • Santhosh Kumar Gaikwad on

@dheeraj Thank you for the Quick response! You are doing an awesome job man.

in case of Leh – Manali did not open, am still fine to come back from Srinagar side. But I want to drive when snow cover is still there till Leh. Ready to take a little risk there.

Am hoping for Srinagar Leh route getting clear by April end.

        • Hmm, it well Zojila Pass will surely have snow and will be the only place where you will find snow. Rest of the places, snow will not be there. Then when you go over to Nubra Valley and Pangong Tso, then you will see snow but that is also possible in late May as well. Manali – Leh Highway is the main place where you get to see most snow on entire Ladakh circuit. So, by not doing it, you will surely be missing the real adventure feel of Ladakh tour 🙂

  3. Hi Dheeraj,
I am subbu from Bangalore, hope you remember me…last year I had planned Ladakh trip with your great guidance but cancelled after booking flight tickets due to some unavoidable reasons.
Again we are (4 elders & 3 kids) planning this year and already booked ticket from Bangalore to Srinagar on May 25, 2018. My itinerary is as below – between May 25, 2018 to June 2, 2018 (10 days):
Day 1 – Fly to Srinagar – overnight stay at Srinagar
    Day 2 – Srinagar – Sonamarg – Zozila – Drass – Kargil
    Day 3 – Kargil – Lamayuru – Magnetic Hills – Leh
Day 4 – Explore Leh town
    Day 5 – Leh – Khardung La – Hunder – Nubra
Day 6 – Nubra – Pangong Tso Lake
Day 7 – Pangong Tso Lake – Leh
    Day 8 – Leh – Manali
    Day 9 – Leh – Manali
Day 10 – Manali to Chandigarh & fly back to Bangalore

Is this schedule is doable or any changes require
As we are travelling with 3 kids which is the best place to stay while returning to Manali

Your suggestion will be great helpful for us….

    • Hey Subbu,

I hope you are doing great, good to connect with you again !!

Your plan is good and doable. On Day 8, you should try for Leh to Jispa or Keylong and on Day 9 it will be Jispa/Keylong to Manali.
