Srinagar Leh Highway Status 2017

Srinagar Leh Highway Status 2017 is still closed but BRO has started the snow clearance operations on it. Couple of days back BRO begin the snow clearance from Gagangair village about 18 KMs from Sonamarg and in the first leg will clear the snow up to Sonamarg. This year there had been record amount of snowfall in all over Himalayas and BRO will surely be facing tough challenges to clear the snow especially from the deadly Zojila Pass.

The 434 KM long Srinagar – Leh Highway is the lifeline for connectivity to Kargil and further Leh – Ladakh. The only other route to Leh – Ladakh is the 474 KM long Manali – Leh Highway whose status for the year can tracked on the thread here. Srinagar – Leh Highway generally opens and gets stabilized by second week of May and last year in 2016 the highway opened on 30th April itself. However, this year it seems unlikely and I feel that the Srinagar – Leh Highway will open and gets stabilized by second or third week of May only. Please keep in mind that even when this road to Ladakh gets open early, it needs at least couple of weeks to settle or get stabilized from initial snow sliding that happens due to quick melting of snow. So, please do not rush to Ladakh by road soon as the highway is thrown open rather wait for couple of weeks to let it stabilize 😉 … This will ensure safe passage for you and avoid any unforeseen mishaps.

As per the past years, I will be starting this sticky post for the Srinagar Leh Highway Status 2017 which so many adventure lovers await every year. However, instead of updating the main article here at DoW Blog, I will keep the updated progress in the DoW Community thread for the same for better tracking of updates. A forum topic always helps in better updates tracking as well as collation of such updates in time organized manner. Hence, for all updates on Srinagar – Leh Highway status 2017, please stay tuned to the topic in DoW Community: Srinagar – Leh Highway Status 2017 | DoW Community Thread

Srinagar Leh Highway Status 2017

Srinagar Leh Highway Status 2017

Once the Srinagar – Leh road opens, I may not be that active in frequently updating the status because these roads close and open on frequent basis. It is barely impossible for a single tiny soul like me to update this information on daily basis once the road gets open, so please request you to excuse me on that front and accept my apologies :)… However, if there is some major blockade of 3 – 4 days, I will try to surely update such information about Srinagar – Leh highway status. That is another reason to keep updated to DoW Community Thread for the same.

I hope as per the last year, this year as well this article thread will be useful in planning your journey on Srinagar – Leh Highway and further to Leh – Ladakh.

Again, for all latest updates on Srinagar – Leh Highway Status 2017 after this initial post on DoW Blog, please stay tuned to the topic in DoW Community: Srinagar – Leh Highway Status 2017 | DoW Community Thread

    Dear Dheeraj Ji,

I have read many forums and blogs in-fact it is true that Chandigarh-Srinagar-Leh-Manali-Chandigarh ride is difficult.
In this context I would like to know that 2 riders on one RE TB-350 is viable option or it will be difficult ?
    Can you please guide us.

    Hi Dheeraj Ji,

First of all, let me THANK YOU for the wonderful forum where resides a plethora of information which one rarely finds on other travel websites.

I am planning to bite the bullet this time and go for the Ladakh Trip this time from 03rd June 2017 to 18th June 2017. I am planning to do the Delhi – Srinagar – Leh – Manali – Delhi route.

    1. Does this time frame look alright with the route perspective?
    2. Would both the routes i.e. Srinagar – Leh and Leh – Manali would be open by this time?

    Thanks and Regards,
    Abhishek Kumar

        Hi Dheeraj Ji,

Thank you so much for your reply.
I am planning a draft itinerary after reading through the common itinerary provided by you. I would like you to validate the same.

Do we have any provision by which I can attach a excel sheet on which I am planning the itinerary? Let me know.

        Thanks and Regards,

  7. Hi Dheeraj bhai,

DOW is literally a God send and i admit i havnt found the wealth of information anywhere else on net. thankyou.

I am planning a solo trip of mumbai in may end or first week of june about 10-12 days only for leh. i wanted to know if your forum has a place for me to find other like minded single/ group travellers or any forums you can suggest.

ps: currently the packaged tours look cheaper then my individual costs. 20000 travel air fare , 40000 for 10-12 days accom, food n pvt travel. ( probably can book trains of mumbai to delhi one way n fly back leh to mumbai )

my budget is about 45k -50 k for over all trip.

be great if you can suggest me someways around it.

    • Thank you so much Rohan, pleasure to hear such comments.

Feel free to post a travel calendar entry from the main menu and also search the travel partners calander for entries so far.

    • Hi Rohan

Good to hear about your forthcoming Leh trip. I plan to be there around the same time and will be accompanied by a friend. After going through DOW site and getting suggestions from Dheeraj (God Bless Him), have finalised this itinerary

2 Tuesday, May 16, 2017 Stay at Hotel till Lunch time. Post lunch visit Tsemo Monastery, Leh Palace and by 5 pm visit Shanti Stupa for a beautiful view of Leh City. Return to Hotel for Dinner and rest.
3 Wednesday, May 17, 2017 After breakfast at the Hotel, leave for Shey, Thiksey & Hemis Monastery. If time permits we can also visit the Druk Padma school, popularly known the “Rancho” school of the famed Hindi movie, The 3 Idiots.
4 Thursday, May 18, 2017 After an early morning breakfast, Leave for Kahradungla, enroute to Nubra Valley. Travel till Turtuk and stay there for the night.
5 Friday, May 19, 2017 After breakfast, leave for Hunder and stay overnight at Hunder
6 Saturday, May 20, 2017 After morning breakfast at Hunder, leave for Shayok. We may carry packed Lunch for having along the way or stop at a local eatery to eat a hot meal with limited options.
7 Sunday, May 21, 2017 After our breakfast at Shayok, leave for Pangong Tso and stay there overnight.
8 Monday, May 22, 2017 After an early breakfast at Pangong Tso, leave for Tso Moriri via Chushul. Stay at Tso Moriri overnight

10 Wednesday, May 24, 2017 Leh to Likir . On the same day we will commence a two day trek of which on Day 1, we will trek from Likir to Yunthang. ( 3 to 4 hours)
11 Thursday, May 25, 2017 Day 2 of our trek will take us from Yunthang to Hemis Shukpachan. (3 to 4 hours). This will be the end of our two day trek.
12 Friday, May 26, 2017 After breakfast at Hemis Shukpachan, we will leave for Lamayuru by vehicle via Dha and Hanu. Stay overnight at Lamayuru.
13 Saturday, May 27, 2017 After breakfast at Lamayuru, leave for Leh via Alchi.
14 Sunday, May 28, 2017 Post a good breakfast, leave by vehicle for Manali

Our cost in Leh, including transport, accommodation, breakfast and dinner works out to around 38k per person. (We have already spoken to a reliable person. ) Also going by Dheeraj’s posts, on road updates, have realized that Manali route for return may not be an option so we may need to tweak our program to travel to Kargil from Lamayaru and then Srinagar before returning to Mumbai.

Hope my long post helps you.

Thanks Dheeraj for making time to answer so many queries, even repeated ones at that !

  8. Hello Dheeraj Bhai,

Your work is really commendable. We respect you a lot and appreciate your efforts which helps us over and over again with all the planning
I am all set for my 2nd Ladakh Trip from Delhi on Jun 10th. I hope both Srinagar Leh Highway and Leh Manali Highway are open by that time.
    Your Views on it?

    • Hi Sambit,

Thank you so much !! 🙂 🙂 Yes, by 10th of June both Srinagar – Leh Highway as well as Manali – Leh Highway should be open to travel to LEh.

      • Thank you for giving us the answers.
It would be a great experience for us, if you could take 5-10 minutes time out of your busy schedule and meet us before our trip starts or in between, depending your availability.
I also appreciate then effort you have put in your blogs to show the importance of responsible travelling. The meet up could be very motivational at least for me.
I hope that is not too much to ask for.

        • Hey Sambit,

You can surely meet the team of core devils from the DoW Community and I can let them know about whereabouts but I am currently in US for this year and won;t be able to meet up. Sorry on that and thank you so much for considering a meetup worthy enough of your time. Would love to meet up some day 🙂

        • That is very nice of of you.
We would love to meet up the core team of DoW as I am sure it will be inspiring for sure to meet the people behind setting up this beautiful community.
It would be wonderful if you could arrange a meet-up. 🙂
We plan to start from Delhi on 10th by afternoon and proceed Jalandhar. We would take the Srinagar route to reach Leh and would return via Manali Leh Highway.

  9. Srinagar – Leh Road Status Update 20th March 2017: BRO about to reach Sonamarg soon after clearing snow on 12 km Gagangeer – Sonamrag of 434 KM long Srinagar – Leh Highway. As per BRO, this year Zojila Pass has about 30-32 feet of snow accumulation and it may take more than usual time to open the Srinagar – Leh Highway in 2017.

Rest follow the details at the link:

  10. Pratik Shukla on

    Hello ,

Just for my knowledge we are planning for a road trip to leh , we will be reaching Srinagar around 20th April so is it possible for us to make to the leh via Srinagar To Leh highway.

If no, then can we change are our routes and instead follow the Manali leh Highway.

Please revert as we have planned our road trip from mumbai.

    • Pratik, as per the latest update posted, it will be really difficult to believe that Srinagar – Leh Highway will open by that time of the year. Manali – Leh Highway is supposed to open by end of first week of June. So, only way to travel to Leh at that time will be by air only.

  11. sanjeev jain on

On 24th may we are planning on to go from sringar to leh by road so will be roads
    be opened
what would be prefferable going from shrinagar to leh or leh to shrinagar as we have taken one way direct flight and one way by road so what would you suggest what way should we travel by road

    • Sanjeev, roads from Srinagar to LEh will be open by 24th May. It is much preferred to take the road from Srinagar to LEh so that the body adjusts to the high altitude gradually.

  12. Nitin Madan on

Planning for Leh on 15th of may your usefull tips will help me out,is there need for permit for suv if yes please let me know from where any more suggestions are welcome.

  13. Shantnu Dhonde on

Sir i want to know if Road between Leh and Pangong will be open in last week of April 2017. I have plan of travelling on 29th April 2017 to Pangong from Leh. Or else i will not buy package including pangong. I am reaching Leh by flight.

    • Roads within Ladakh remain open all round the year barring few days of heavy snowfall. So, in case it heavily snows during the time of your visit, it should be fine.

  14. Puneet Bajpai on

        • Hi Gautam,

You can follow the below plan in case Manali – Leh gets open by that time else either you can fly out of Leh or you can return the same route back to Srinagar. Best is to get the taxi directly from taxi driver: List of Taxi Drivers for Ladakh – Srinagar – Leh – Manali

          Day 1 | Delhi – Srinagar
          — Enjoy walk around Dal lake and may be Shikara ride as well
          — If you have time then check out, floating market, Shalimar Garden.
          — Overnight at Srinagar

          Day 2 | Srinagar – Sonamarg – Zozi La – Drass – Kargil
          — Enjoy the vistas enroute
          — Have late drunch meal at Drass is you are a vegetarian as sometimes it gets difficult to find veg. food at Kargil
          — Overnight at Kargil

          Day 3 | Kargil – Lamayuru – Leh
          — Cover Mulbekh Maitrey, Lamayuru Moanstery, Lunar Landscapes
          — On the way you can also see Gurudwara Pather Sahib, Magnetic Hills, Confluence at Nimmu
          — Overnight at Leh

Day 4 | Leh Local Sightseeing + Acclimatization
          — To know the about the places to visit check the link: Travel Guide for Local Sightseeing of Leh Town in Ladakh
          — Overnight at Leh

          Day 5 | Leh – Khardung La – Diskit – Hunder
          — Head for Nubra Valley and stay overnight at Hunder / Diskit
          — On the way enjoy a cup of soup at Highest Motorable Pass (as claimed) Khardung La
          — Diskit has monasteries with tallest lord Buddha statue and Hunder has sand dunes and bacterian camel safari

          Day 6 | Hunder / Diskit – Sumur – Panamik – Sumur – Khardung La – Leh

          — Overnight at Leh

Day 7 | Leh – Pangong Tso Lake – Leh
          — Day trip to Pangong Tso
          — Overnight at Leh

          Day 8 | Leh – Taglang La – Moore Plains – Pang – Sarchu
          — Stay overnight at Sarchu

          Day 9 | Sarchu – Baralacha La – Keylong – Rohtang Pass – Manali
          — On the way cover Suraj Tal, Deepak Tal which are on the road sides only
          — Overnight at Manali

          Day 10 | Manali – Delhi
          — Return home

Day 11 | Buffer day to be kept incase of road closure due to landslides or snowfall or perhaps you want to enjoy more.

      • Thanku so much for information. But we’ll start our journey on 22nd from katra and evn on 1st our return tickets are from katra too.
In between this time at what places we can go ?

        • It will take 4 days to reach Leh from Srinagar side starting from Delhi with stop overs at Jammu, Srinagar, Kargil and 3 days to come back from Leh from Manali side to Delhi with stopovers at Sarchu, Manali. This makes it 7 days. 1 Day is required in Leh for acclimatization. You have about 10 days. 1 Day can be used as Day trip to Pangong Tso and other day can be used as day trip to Nubra Valley or just Khardung La pass.

  17. MikeyMike on

    Hi Dheeraj,

I am a very frequent visitor to your blog and seriously do not understand how you have time to maintain all this exciting info.

I would really appreciate if you could revert on the below –

    1) 4 friends planning to rent SUV from Srinagar to LEH on 10th or 11th May. Please recommend or suggest some contacts 🙂

    2) Upon reaching Leh planning to rent bikes from Leh to pangong and Nubra. Please recommend or suggest some contacts 🙂

  18. hello sir,

we are two people travelling to ladakh in end of july month 2017,we want to have idea that we will be reaching to jammu by afternoon 14:40 is their any govt buses available after that in evening and from jammu to sringar and then ahead from srinagar to leh as same.
Another query was how much time does it would take from leh-manali-chandigrah, as leh to manali will be 1 night 2 days or it will be 2 night 3 different people are sharing different things.

    • Hi Hiral,

You should be able to get some shared taxi to Srinagar from Jammu in late evening or night and next morning you can take shared taxi to Kargil from Srinagar. Please note, have some sleep in Srinagar else take rest day in Srinagar before moving further to keep your body less from fatigue.

Leh to Manali is done as below:

      Day 1 | Leh – Sarchu / Jispa / Keylong
      Day 2 | Sarchu / Jispa / Keylong – Manali
      Day 3 | Manali – Chandigarh

  19. Hi, we have planned to cover Srinagar to Leh from 24th April this year. Is there any chance that the roads are open on April?

    • Wasim, it is very unlikely that Srinagar to Leh road will be open by that time of the year owing to bad weather now a days and also record snowfall in mountains

  20. Dear sir
Thanks for all information, kindly advise us is AUGUST 2017 is best time to travel by car with family from Srinagar to leh.
    A waiting your response

    • It is monsoon time in general up there in North and at some parts of Manali – Leh Highway (like before Baralacha La) and Srinagar – Leh Highway (like before Kargil) you might need to face monsoon hassles but once you get closer to Ladakh, then Ladakh being rain shadow region is least affected by monsoon rains, though rains does reach Ladakh now but to minimum and mostly it might remains overcast conditions. There is no thumb rule of certainty about weather conditions but above is generally common pictures seen over last few years except ugly 2010 …

Please refer the link in our community: FAQ | Is Monsoon season good time to travel to Ladakh? for more details.

  21. eagerly waiting for good news from BRO…we are going to take this route on 25th May to reach Leh…..
