The popularity of traveling to Spiti Valley is increasing day by day. Now more and more travelers want to know about the best time to visit Spiti Valley or travel on the road to Spiti Valley either via Shimla – Kinnaur or Spiti Valley.
The road to Spiti Valley remains open all around the year through Shimla – Kinnaur while the road from Manali side closes in winter as soon as Rohtang Pass and Kunzum Pass close. So, tourists must know about the right time to travel to Spiti Valley.
In this article of the series, “Comprehensive Travel Guide for Spiti Valley”, I will try to share my inputs on the best time or season to travel the road to Spiti Valley or in other words what is the best time to visit Spiti Valley.
Let's quickly dive into the details:
When is the best time for Spiti Valley road trip?
We all know that you can travel to Spiti Valley by two routes. One traverses the roads from Delhi via Manali to Kaza, Spiti Valley as Manali – Rohtang Pass – Gramphu – Chattru – Kunzum Pass – Kaza (Spiti Valley). And, then the other one goes from Delhi to Kaza via Shimla – Kinnaur Valley as Shimla – Kinnaur – Nako – Sumdo (Spiti Valley) – Tabo – Kaza.
Shimla to Kaza Route
The route via Shimla – Kinnaur is also commonly known as Hindustan – Tibet Highway or NH-05. The Hindustan Tibet Road remains open throughout the year via Kinnaur Valley, and you can make a journey to Kaza or Spiti via Shimla – Kinnaur all around the year because there is no high mountain pass that comes on this route which gets heavy snowfall.
It is said to be motorable all around the year; however, traveling to Spiti Valley, especially in the winter months, is not that easy as it reads. The road conditions in winters on the Hindustan – Tibet highway are quite challenging and tough.
Hence, you should avoid traveling to Spiti Valley in winter in case you do not want to try extreme winter cold conditions and live the extreme adventure.
Manali to Kaza Route
Traveling to Spiti Valley via Manali side, by and large, depends first upon the opening of Rohtang Pass and then opening of the route from Gramphu to Kunzum Pass and Kunzum Pass in itself. The snow clearance operations begin in March and continue till May end or June the first half when the road from Manali to Kaza gets open.
This generally takes time and hence, Manali to Kaza route remains closed for almost six-seven months in a year. Rohtang Pass generally opens after April and further, the route to Kaza over Kunzum Pass opens by the second week of June.
So, you have very little time in a year (mid-June to October), in case you are interested in the entire Spiti Valley circuit that is Delhi – Shimla – Kinnaur – Kaza (Spiti Valley) – Kunzum Pass – Rohtang Pass – Manali – Delhi.
But, still, the question is :
When is the best time to visit Spiti Valley?
In the following part of the article, let’s check in detail, how the whole year month-by-month looks like in terms of traveling on the road to Spiti Valley in Himachal Pradesh. After understanding the Spiti Valley weather for these months, you can evaluate which month or season shall work out best for you to plan a Spiti Valley road trip.
Spiti Valley in January – February – March
January, February, and March are called the extreme winter months in Spiti Valley when there is a dense blanket of white snow all around you in Spiti. The road from Manali to Kaza is closed, and most hotels are shut off. You need to rely on limited homestay options in Spiti Valley. Hence, you need to prepare very well for your trip to Spiti in these winter months.
You should not expect much from facilities in Spiti valley in these months. The Spiti Valley temperature in winter can go well below -20 deg C, so you must go well prepared with proper woolen clothing. As snowfall can happen anytime in this period, you should keep buffer days for road closures.
There aren’t any toilets with running water or water available in Spiti Valley in the months from January to March. Hence, you need to use dry pit toilets. You should carry a hand sanitizer with you to best maintain sanitization wherever possible. The food will be pretty basic as available in the homestay. Carry a good temperature rating sleeping bag with you as well to beat the cold in homestays.
Roads within Spiti Valley are open only to an extent. Kaza to Losar is closed, and hence it is not the best time to visit Kunzum Pass because the road is closed. Kaza – Langza – Komic – Hikkim – Kaza road remains also closed during peak these winter months.
January has the least snow while February and March have snow in abundance in comparison to all other months. In my honest opinion, March is one of the best time to enjoy winter Spiti trip.
Spiti Valley in April to May
When the months of April – May come, the snow starts to melt, and some link roads within Spiti Valley start to open up. These roads including the road to Losar from Kaza and the road to Pin Valley towards Mud, the road to Lhalung – Demul, or the roads to Langza – Hikkim – Komic circuits.
The opening of Kunzum Pass and the further road towards Manali from Kunzum Pass takes more time. Generally, Manali to Kaza via Kunzum Pass gets open in June only.
However, overall, as the temperature in Spiti Valley comes into a positive scale in April – May, the conditions in Spiti Valley become bearable. The road journey to Spiti Valley is not that hard this period of April – May. The season for Spiti starts to open in these two months only when adventurists from various parts of the country start planning their trips to Spiti Valley.
Hotels start to come out of hibernation, and things, including fruits/vegetables, start to arrive in Spiti Valley frequently. If you are interested in watching snow-studded peaks or want to play in the snow at Kunzum Pass, then this is the ideal time to be in Spiti Valley.
If you are one of those who wants to feel the deserted roads, low tourist count, OK with basic facilities and OK to take a chance on giving up a place or two as that link road might not have opened then it is OK for you to travel in this window. But, keep in mind that you will not be able to do the complete circuit from Shimla to Kinnaur to Kaza to Manali as the road from Kaza to Rohtang Pass to Manali does not get open.
Spiti Valley in June to July
June – July is the beginning of the actual main season to travel to Spiti Valley when a large number of tourists make their journey over these. The season eventually takes the rapid move as the road to Kaza from Manali over Kunzum Pass also opens by the second week of June. This time would mean that the road to Chandratal from Manali will also open up in June and Chandratal is one of the most popular places to visit in Spiti Valley.
In June – July, mostly all the link roads to various sightseeing places in Spiti or remote villages in Spiti Valley also get open in this period. So, you can plan your visit to Langza, Hikkim, Komic, Demul, Lhalung, Pin Valley – Mudh Village, Gete, and Tashigang villages.
Hotels in Spiti Valley are all also open with full facilities, and there is quite a lot of hustle-bustle of tourists all around in Spiti Valley, especially Kaza town. Even Chandratal lake becomes accessible in June soon after the Kunzum Pass opens.
Well, it is one of the good times to make a road trip to Spiti Valley and a desperate retreat from the HEAT of northern cities of India. There are many water crossings active during this period as the snow melts, so it is always better to reach the destination well in the afternoon to avoid getting stuck either in one of those water crossings or behind it.
Hence, follow my “Leave Early, Sleep Early” principle very strictly. In the recent past, June appears to have good pre-monsoon showers on the way to Spiti Valley, especially in Kinnaur, and even Spiti experiences one or two spells of snow in June as well, not to forget the (June 2013) tragic flash floods in Kinnaur district. So, even the Spiti Valley weather is somehow becoming unpredictable nowadays. However, this is considered one of the better times to travel over the road to Spiti Valley that is Hindustan Tibet Highway.
Spiti in August
This is the time when the monsoon is in a full flurry in Kinnaur Valley and other parts of Northern India. You MUST understand that Kinnaur is not a place to be in rains with its history of massive landslides and the live landslide zone of Malling Nalla ahead of Nako.
In this period, the roads leading to Spiti Valley are almost in a horrible state as compared to the rest of the year, especially in Kinnaur Valley. In recent years, even the roads from Delhi to Manali have also caused major concerns.
Having said all that, it does not mean that it is not a season to travel to Spiti Valley. The Spiti Valley region falls under the Trans Himalayan region which is generally rain shadowed but in recent past rains have started to reach even Spiti though not that much just frequent drizzles and overcast skies. So, generally, this time shall be avoided, if possible. You may only think about it when you have enough buffer days in hand to face intermittent delays or even cancellation of the trip.
Once you reach Spiti Valley, things remain mostly OK. But do not forget that you have to return via either Manali – Kaza or Kaza – Kinnaur again, which DO experience good monsoon rains, especially Rohtang Pass will be in a big mess, and roads to Mandi may be submerged.
Also, keep in mind that August is also the peak time of apple season and crop transportation, which creates a good amount of traffic jams owing to a high number of trucks that ply on the Kinnaur Valley route. If you happen to be there, then do take one or two cartons of golden apples or red apples from Kinnaur 🙂

Spiti in September to mid-October
This is the time which is my favorite when autumn colors of Spiti are blooming with oranges leaves on the trees enhancing the beauty of magnificent backdrops by many levels. The aqua colors of water in the river add jewels to the pristine beauty all around Spiti Valley.
The Spiti Valley temperature at night and morning is quite cold, in some parts, almost close to 2-3 degrees Celsius. Hence, do carry heavy woolens or thermals at this time of the year with you. You can also get your hands on super delicious Spiti Apples around Tabo or Hurling and even in Kaza at a house of locals. Spiti Valley is famous for its apple. DO NOT miss to taste them or buy them if possible; I am sure you would not have tasted such an apple before 😉 …
If you are a snow lover then you will not like this month as almost all the peaks around you would be naked without any snow on them.
Regarding making the complete circuit, especially after mid of October, yes you can come from the Kinnaur side and go via the Manali side BUT do check the weather updates for few days before making the trip across Kunzum Pass in late October or November when you are at Kaza or Losar.
Kunzum Pass starts getting snowfall by September end and it can be very tricky and risky crossing over it in no man’s land in late October or November. Hence, you need to be very, very sure of the weather, especially in October, when making a move from Kaza to Manali beyond Kunzum Pass. My frank and modest advice will always be to avoid traveling from Manali to Kaza in later October and November.
Spiti Valley in November to December
November – December is generally the winter months in Spiti Valley or at least the beginning of winters. Spiti Valley weather is quite cold during this time, and water starts to freeze in the water pipes. Hence, running water is a luxury at this time of the year.
While traveling to Spiti Valley in November you go through some hardships of ice on the roads, lack of electricity, winter cold conditions with sub-zero temperatures topped with basic facilities as most of the guesthouses get closed.
Kunzum Pass gets closed by November for the next 6-7 months, so one cannot complete the circuit from Shimla – Kinnaur to Manali during this period. You should note that in this winter period, the water in the taps freeze, and people depend on hand pump water at certain places or boiled water in buckets. Kaza especially suffers from a shortage of water in these months and washrooms are big nightmares without tap water.
Do not forget to check what things and clothes to pack for Spiti trip?
So, in all this period, life is not that easy. In December, the link roads to various places like Gyu Mummy, Pin Valley – Mudh, Gete, Komik, Langza, Losar ahead of Kaza, etc. in Spiti Valley start getting closed one by one after snowfall starts.
Hence, you can only make a trip up to Kaza on this route, and there is always a chance of closure of roads for a few days if it continues to snow for some time during winters. So, if you are making a road trip to Spiti Valley in winters, be ready for extreme adventure and delays too!! Go very well prepared at this time of the year concerning mental levels, physical levels, and food to carry along with having some buffer days.

Well, the best time to visit Spiti Valley is, September to mid-October, if you love the vivid colors of nature or you are a photographer looking for natural colors or someone who loves to have fewer tourists around yourself but all at the cost of not having any snow around. Otherwise, if you are one of those who loves to see snow up there in Spiti road trip then make the journey to Spiti Valley in the period of Mid-May to June.

Delhi -> Reckong Peo -> Kaza

Tushar, last heard the road to Tabo – Kaza got restored temporarily but please check with some hotel in Kaza or Tabo about the same. There was a major landslide which closed the road for a week or so.
After seeing your message I called HP tourism department 0177-2652561, but they surprisingly couldn’t give any update and even not aware of this. I got to know from DharmendarJI (owner of Siddhart Guest House at Tabo) that it may take another 7 days or more to restore the road. Do you have any other local contact near Nako (the place near to that landslide) who can provide more clarity so that we can plan accordingly ? It will be unlikely this year that Manali – Kaza road will be open by that time of the year. There has been a foot snowfall in this week itself 🙁
Hey Dheeraj, so two of us are planning a visit to Spiti Valley in May from 19th-22nd. Now the issue as you can clearly see is that we have very limited time. Could you accordingly suggest an itinerary which involves us leaving Delhi Thursday night and coming back to Delhi on Tuesday morning? Oh we would be solely dependant upon private taxis too.

No Chirayu, Chandratal roads will not be open and road from Manali to Kaza will not be open. So, you can go from Shimla – Kinnaur side and come back the same route.

Hi Ravi, Roads to Lahaul will be closed but you can make a trip to Kinnaur – Spiti Valley from Shimla – Kinnaur route. You cannot use Manali – Kaza, Spiti route at this time of the year. April is still pretty much harsh in Spiti Valley and hotels are also not open. Food will be basic, stay will be limited to home stays, weather will be quite cold.

Pralay, you should be able to get the home stays on the spot. Most home stays do not have much contact info. and offer similar facilities. So, best will be when you land there, check out few and rest on the place where you want to be.

Pralay, Well, mostly it is doable and the buses too run. Best is if you can stay at Narkanda instead of Shimla. But, Shimla – Kalpa is also doable.
Kalpa – Tabo is doable and makes sense from acclimatization perspective too, so that is completely fine.

Dhiraj, well, roads from Kaza to Manali will not be open by taht time of the year and hence you will have to come back the same route from Kinnaur Valley. You can follow the below plan which will be very hectic for just 7 days in hand

Day 8: Narkanda / Shimla – Delhi
However, it will be quite cold in Spiti Valley and mostly frozen. You may not be able to reach most of the places mentioned above within Spiti but the views will be frozen in case you are OK with extreme cold, basic food and home stay stays.

Hi Gaurav,
1. April is a very tricky time when snow is melting and landslides, shootings stones are pretty common during those days. Also, Spiti itself is quite cold during April with many internal roads still blocked due to snow and of course you can only travel upto Kaza.
2. You will be able to find home stays that just start to run but the toilets with water can be an issue.

hello I would like to know whether Honda shine is proper for spitti valley tour as well as leh ladakh tour. What is the minimum amount of CC for this tour. please specify with brand and model properly.
Vikram, Well though it is not required to have more powerful bike like Bullet/RE but always preferable. 100cc might be able to do it as I have read few accounts of it in the past but surely will struggle at some places where it might be required to push manually, especially I believe if you get stuck in some water crossing. DO NOT push the bike beyond its limit in case your stuck rather user your own physical power to get it out.
Most of us have daily commuting and 100cc bikes small cars. Still we have dreams to travel high on these beautiful and challenging roads. Its always preferable to travel on these roads using powerful, 4×4, SUV, high ground clearance kind of vehicles. But very few fortunate traveller could afford it. So what about our dreams? But the impressions changes as you see the local people defying all these norms for travel vehicles and still commute daily and comfortably on these roads.
You may travel on 100cc bike, although it doesn’t sound so comfortable. I have done it on the Langza-tashigong – Gete and on Demul roads, using 100cc bike (star city). I did it with pillion riding, but I had to ask my friend to get down at one point (my bike got breathless while attempting a short-cut) near Gete. Apart from this, there was no problem. If you are still keen on it, my only suggestions are:
1. Ride solo but in a group of at least 2 to 3 and with minimum/essential luggage.
2. Try to avoid short-cuts/bypass created by local vehicles, unless you have a more powerful vehicle.
3. Don’t do dangerous and gushing/water-crossings, but wait for some pickups passing by to carry you. It is quiet easy and handy in comparison to taking risk. Do the known and anticipated water-crossings (eg. Mulling Nala) in the morning hours.
4. Clean the air filters/carburetors, if they are choked before going to above >4000 meters stretch. The roads here are very dusty.

Pratik, yes May is good time to travel Spiti valley when you also get a chance to see snow capped peaks as well. However, you will not be able to visit Chandratal and do Kaza – Manali road. You will have to go from Kinnaur side and come back from Kinnaur side only. Best part is that you will be able to explore Kinnaur Valley and Spiti valley properly. Though situation will not be exactly the way described in the article in November early but similar or turning out to be similar. Then, if you still want to make, you will have to go through Shimla – Kinnaur route and come back the same way.

We are 5 friends planning (28th Oct – 1st Nov ) from Gurgaon to Kaza and then back, through Shimla route only.
We will stay at Kinnaur (in Home stay) and travel Kazza in the early morning and then back to Kinnaur within the same day. Will this plan be feasible? Please suggest the risk and road condition too? We will cover the distance in a Fortuner.

Kalpa (kinnaur) to Kaza is a good 9 Hrs of drive so doing this in one day takes lot from your body. Now, if you want do come back the same day, it will be too too risky and not recommended at all. From Shimla side, it takes 3 days to reach Spiti Valley if you plan to drive 8-9 Hrs each day and three days to come back. Even if you stretch and take the risks of AMS at least 5 days will be required for a very hectic trip.

Now, my concern is whether the roads will be already blocked by then owing to snow? We aim to cover Nako, Tabo, Dhankar, Langza, Komic, Hikkim and Mud. The catch is my parents and parents in law will be with us and hence i want to be sure that they don’t get the shock of their lives looking at the roads. World wait for your advice.

Sayonee, you can make the trip to Spiti Valley but I will suggest to make the trip from Shimla – Kinnaur and come back from the same route. You should not take Manali – Kaza route for sure. Also, since your parents will be traveling, it will be tricky as it starts getting cold up there and conditions might not be too favourable for someone not used to travel raw.

we are frequent riders but never been to spiti b4. So, be true and tell us is it do able? And please give ur personal suggestions. And m in doubt of completing Chandartal lake while solang to kaza: do u think it could be done?

Parteek, it is only like being on road and doing nothing. Kaza to Kibber and Dhangkar and then to Tabo – Nako – Kalpa will be a bit too much. You should be able to do Kaza – Kalpa. All these days will be long long days, so be ready for some fun on dirt roads for long long days. If I were you, I will try to add couple of days and ease out the journey to some extent.
and wat about batal to chandartal. can we do it on raod for 11 kms and then trek for 2-3 kms
The trek is only about less than a KM, the bikes can go all the way to the parking lot ahead of camping sites.

Come Dussehra holidays and again I am planning a Spiti Valley Trip with my Spouse on a self drive rental (Ford EcoSport) from Chandigarh. However, I just have 5 days i.e depart from Chandigarh @ 11/Oct noon and return Delhi by 16 Nov 6 PM.

I am planning a trip to spiti via shimla in the first week of November by a self driven Ecosport? How are the road conditions during this part of the year?
Ankit, firstly keep in mind that roads will be frozen with black ice on the road especially when you enter the region of Nako and then further. You have to be very careful while driving and one brake you may end up in a crash or in gorge. So, only take the ride if you are experienced enough to drive in such regions during freezing conditions. Secondly, everything will be shut in Spiti Valley and only handful of guest houses or home stays will be operational. The food will be basic and there will be no water in the taps and bathrooms will be locked. Only options will be dry pits. If you are game for these, well, you are good to go 🙂

Sharan, well, it is doable and roads will be devoid of water crossings but the route will be less frequented during that time and most of the stay options pack up between Manali – Kaza. In case the weather predictions are not good, then please avoid to travel between Kaza – Manali as getting stuck there means getting stuck in no man’s land.

Jaydeep, I will not recommend the travel over Manali – Kaza road. So, you will be left with the option of travel to Spiti Valley from Kinnaur side and come back from Kinnaur side only. These are the night halts you should make: Narkanda, Kalpa, Tabo, Kaza (spend few days based on time on hand), Sangla, Sarahan, Delhi

We (Me and my husband) are from mumbai and are planning a road trip to Spiti (10 days) to and from Chandigarh 24th sep to 3rd nov. We need your advice about the road condition and driving difficulties.
We have a choice of renting Zoomcar for self drive or hiring a taxi with a driver. Definitely we are more interested in self drive but my husband would be the sole driver and he had never driven on Himalayas. We are planning to take Ecosport for the journey. What would be your advice. If you suggest us to hire a taxi then can be please help us with some details of Spiti Tour Package providers. We would be following the common itinerary. If car breaks in between will we get support in the route is our major concern.

Roads are best in the whole season in September, definitely not saying they are still easy but comparatively in while season they are in best shape towards end of September. I will not advice you to self drive if you guys have never driven in Himalayas.
You can get connected directly to some drivers in Spiti Valley or Kinnaur Valley at the link: List of Taxi Drivers for Spiti Valley & Kinnaur Valley. These drivers can come and pick you up from Manali / Shimla / Delhi / Chandigarh too, of course with a price of pickup as well.
The rates of the taxis are about Rs 3000-3500 per day depending upon the number of days you plan to travel, more the days, less the price.
Otherwise, taxis in general are also available on the spot from Shimla or Manali from respective taxi stands

Sumit, it has started snowing a bit in higher himalayas. Though it is not that late if you can bear cold conditions but be ready and prepared in case of snow you may get stuck for a day or two. Do Manali – Kaza early in the trip and there will not be any issues while coming back from Kinnaur side.

Siingh, well, there are no bike rental shops in Kaza. Regarding carrying cylinder, AFAIK, it is not allowed to carry fuel in passenger vehicles. Above all, when everything will be available why to risk your life by carrying an inflammable material in the car. You can cook in the kitchen of locals in case you want where you will be staying.

Last year we 4 guys completed delhi -Manali -Leh -Shrinagar –delhi circuit on bike, successfully. We loved that trip which was out lifetime best adventure.
So sir pls suggest about following points:

1. You should plan the entire Spiti Valley circuit towards the end of June or at least in third week as by then road from Manali to Kaza via Kunzum Pass will get open

1. You can take family Chirag, lot of people travel with family including me. You can check a very balanced and most common itinerary for Spiti Valley followed by many travellers including me at the link here for 10-11 days: Most Common Itinerary for Spiti Valley.
Your bikes shall always be within the cab or your cab is single then the cab should always be between the bikes.

PLAN
Night travel from delhi to manali via bus and Hire a Cab here.
day 1 :- Manali to Kaza and overnight stay at Kaza.
Day 2 :- Dhankar and tabo monastery night stay at Kaza.
Day 3 :- Pin Valley Overnight Stay at Kaza
Day 4 :- Chandra tal and Overnight stay at Batal
Day 5 :- Return to manali via rohtang and stay at Kullu( will try to reach Kasol)
Day 6 :- Kullu to Kasol-Manikaran-Kheer ganga return to Kullu by night and will take bus to delhi
Stay at Tabo on Day 2. Visit Pin Valley while coming back from Tabo to Kaza ad in evening visit Langza, Hikkim, Komic

Sahil, it takes 3 days from Shimla – Kinnaur side to reach Spiti and two days from Manali side. Same will be required to come back. So, in case you planning the whole circuit minimum 6 days with one rest day in Kaza and if you go from Manali side only then minimum 5 days with one rest day in Kaza. Keep in mind going from Manali side, you will mostly rest in Kaza to acclimatize and will not be able to do much sightseeing. So, I see a trip to Spiti Valley with anything less than 7 days is hectic but possible.
Is it possible to do the complete circuit in Spiti from 15th – 23rd October? The Shimla route is open all through the year, is it possible to go in and get out with the same route if Manali route is closed.
Yes, Shimla route remains open all round the year. It is very risky to travel from Manali – Kaza that late in the season and hence I will suggest you go from Manali side and come back from Shimla side so that you cross Kunzum Pass early in the off season.
I understand there is always an uncertainty travelling in such high passes. Will Kunzum pass be doable during 16-17th Oct according to your experience and knowledge.
Yes, it should be OK but like you know by now, it is time of snowfall and it may snow during that time. Just check the weather conditions before leaving for the day to cross it.

1. Srinagar : with the curfue around Srinagar, can we pass Srinagar early morning or late evening ?
2. Plan b is to go via maneli – keyong – leh . what do you suggest .
Our travel dates are sept 2 , we get bike n we start riding. Also is it a good idea to squeeze in spiti valley in this plan b. Maneli – spiti – keyling – leh . I was reading ur blog and it u suggested sept is the most beautiful time to visit. We are thre from sept 2 to sept 19

1. I will not sugggest, still curfew is there in Srinagar. So, its better to either fly in to Leh or go from Manali side.
2. I will strongly suggest to do that.

Planning for Spiti from Delhi sometime in the month of September. Im taking my Fortuner (4X2) and travelling alone.
My itinerary is:
Day 01: Delhi – Shimla – Kufri – Fagu – Narkanda
Day 02: Narkanda – Kumarsain – Kingal – Rampur Jhakri – Jeori -Sarahan Jeori – Wangtu – Tapri – Chooling – Karcham -Sangla – Chitkul (overnite at Chitkul)
Day 03: Chitkul – Sangla – Sangla – Karcham – Powari – Reckong Peo – Kalpa (overnite at Kalpa)
Day 04: Kalpa – Reckong Peo – Pooh – Khab – Nako – Malling Nullah – Sumdo – Hurling – Tabo (overnite at Tabo or Nako)
A few kilometers before Tabo, you will come across a cemented gate on your right and road heading towards Gue village. This site is famous for a 650 year old Mummy located here and is worth a visit. From the gate, it is an 8 kms drive to the village. The temple where the Mummy is placed is on a hilltop and is hard to miss once you have reached the village. You can also ask any of the locals and they can point you in the right direction. After visiting the temple, drive back 8 kms to the highway and continue towards Tabo.
Day 05: Tabo –Dhankar- Kaza (overnite at Kaza)
Day 06: Exploring Kaza– Visit Pin Valley National Park, High altitude villages of Langza, Hikkim and Komic (overnite at Kaza)
Day 07: Kaza – Losar – Kunzum Pass – Chandrataal (overnite at Chander Taal Lake Camps)
Day 08: Chandrataal – Batal – Gramphu – Rohtang Pass – Marhi – Manali ( overnite at Manali)

1. Your plan is OK. The Pin Valley will be covered after Dhangkar while going from Tabo to Kaza. Wish you can add a day in Kaza to do a bit of rest as well.

Megha, it will be too late in the season and I will not suggest traveling on Manali – Kaza road during that time of the year. For Kinnaur valley road, it will be a bi less time to do Spiti as it takes three days to reach Spiti from Delhi via Shimla – Kinnaur side.

Satish, there is no major road closure updates. A bits of pieces of landslides which are part of monsoons and rains. You should not worry about Kaza – Kunzum Pass 0 Battal – Chandratal as they all are under rain shadow region and it does not rain much up there. However, what you should be worried about is Kinnaur Valley 🙂

We had foced to take ordinary room at bomdila at 3000.wo kahte hai na “doodh ka jala mathha bhi fook fook ke pita hai” .bas isilye socha ki hotel book kar lu aur tension free ho jau.jab apne kaha hai ki option hai then koi problem nahi
yes Naresh bhai, Kalpa mein bahut options hai. Go to Rakpa Regency. Manager is Raj Sharma, he is a nice guy. We stayed in DoW Mega Meet 2014 up there with them only.

Well, once you reach Spiti Valley, it is rain shadow region but traveling to Spiti requires you to go through lower hills where you will surely find some monsoon hassles.

Javed, usually by end of September, it does start snowing in higher hills. So, there may be a chance in case one spell of snow has happened before you make a trip, else it will be just without snow.

Avnish, only case if you are lucky enough. Somtimes it snows around September end but chances are slim but yes there are chances. Road conditions will be best of the entire season during that time.

Ria, in lower hills you will have to face monsoon hassles and in your case almost up to the point where you reach Chattru – Batal range. Till then rivers will be flowing in spate, landslides could be common. Couple of days back a massive landslide was there in Mandi area. Please check the weather conditions and then take a wise decision.
Just did our Spiti trip 2 weeks ago, I am writing about it in a blog. I think the only thing we missed was the pin-valley and the 9 day plan, and unfortunately because of going in a swift we could not come out through Manali and had to turn back from Chandrattal.
The roads from Chandrataal to Manali are not meant for punny cars – Bikes can manage, but sedans/hatchbacks can’t.

Hmm, we had a Myles car so were OK to take small risks ;). We actually got stuck twice, once were pushed out of ice cold water with help of some locals and the other time we had to use jacks to get the car out.
The overwhelming advice was to go back – there were few Gypsy’s that had to be towed away near Chattru. I will just assume the roads were worse than usual, or we not that good a driver, risking some scratches was not an issue !!
Naunidh, that’s very usual on Gramphu – Battal road. Good that you took the advice and came back as there was still Dorni nallah left for you to cross, which is the most dreadful 🙂 … But, like I said, people do it including me, taking my dzire up there for almost last 5 years or so. So, it’s all about the moment of the day, the way you are accustomed to such water crossings and how you tread the pass. Sometimes luck also play a major role in it and as you said even Gypsies can get stuck and even trucks too. So, challenges will always be there on such trans – Himalayan roads. People loose chambers of the car and tow them back as well including XUVs 😉

Woh – Oct will be cold, but best places to stay in tent were in Chandrataal, they had variety of options. We missed staying there as we wanted to cover up the journey the next morning faster and were also vary off AMS.
The other place with nice tents was Nako (had hotels too), but between these two I would prefer Chandrataal.
In October, most places will be cold to stay in tents. May be try in Kinnaur or other lower hil region to stay in tents.

It is not at all safe to travel road from Manali to Kaza beyond mid of October. Also, Spiti Valley is not a honeymoon destination. It is a destination of adventure. I will not suggest that trip especially during that time for honeymoon.
He is right don’t mix it with Honeymoon – you may have to stay in tents, small dingy huts at times. A single rock slide or flash flood wipes the bridges off. We had a group of honeymoon couples traveling with us – I could see they regretted the decision, but were forcing themselves to try and enjoy.

Dipak, how many days do you have in hand from Manali to Manali. HRTC buses run between Manali – Kaza and also shared taxis are available. Apart from that taxis are of course available.

We will be reaching Manali on August 12th morning (Friday), and booked return flight from Delhi on 16th morning!!!(So have to reach back at Manali on 14th night) And we would like to go to these three places:

Dipak, it is too much to ask in just 3 days in hand. Frankly speaking I doubt even about Chandratal but you have to risk the AMS and try below if yo really want to do it. Please note there will be no medical help around Chandratal and in case you get sick it can be trouble, deep trouble.
12 – Reach Manali and head to Khoksar/Battal that day but you will not get buses that late so either get shared taxi or get private taxi. The bus to Kaza leaves Manali by 5.30-6.00 AM
13 – Visit Chandratal and come back or stay there
14 – Come back to Manali

We are planning to go on 30th July itself and planning to take our own car. Are the roads good Via Manali and is it safe to take a car.
Shivani, well, the roads if you havenot been or seen such roads then it may appealto you worst of the worst roads in the world, especially Gramphu to Batal. I am not trying to demotivate you but to set the expectations right. The road form Gramphu to Battal can easily be considered as like driving on the river bed. So, keep the expectations right and in case you are traveling by a low GC car, then if you are not experienced to such road, for sure there will be trouble negotiating the under belly hits to the car and crossing water streams.

Akshay, well, Kinnaur will surely have issues with rains. Same goes with route to Manali and crossing the Rohtang Pass. There will be slush, fog, landslides. Once, you enter Spiti Valley things will be better as it is rain shadow region. So, it wont be a trip without hassles in lower hills unless you are lucky to experience a clear weather.

Please note in October you will have things quite cold, so go with heavy woollens. You can get connected directly to some drivers in Spiti Valley or Kinnaur Valley at the link: List of Taxi Drivers for Spiti Valley & Kinnaur Valley. These drivers can come and pick you up from Manali / Shimla / Delhi / Chandigarh too, of course with a price of pickup as well.

Yes local shared taxis do run between the villages of the Spiti Valley, you can opt them. You should visit in May in that case because March and mid of april are too cold and most things are shutoff

Mayank, it will be a season of monsoon and rains will surely trouble you especially up to Rohtang Pass from Manali side and almost up to Puh from Kinnaur side. Also, Kinnaur is not a place to be in monsoons.
Hello brother, I am planning to do shimla-kaza-shimla in alto k10 with 160mm gc from 11th-15th July.I am a local resident of shimla. I know its not recommended by I lack other options. As I checked many websites I don’t find any reasonable priced hotel available on these dates. So I am carring my own tent and sleeping bags, are there any gud locations on the way where I can put up. If I leave at 6 from shimla I guess I reach by 6 at Nako, so can I find any gud place to camp there or I dont know U suggest. You are open for any advise and suggestion. Thanks.
Yes Manu, there will be plenty of options available all around the Spiti for tents. Also, you will get home stays on the spot so dont worry much on that front. I will not suggest a stay at Nako, rather I will say head for Puh, do Shimla to Puh in one day and then reach Tabo or Kaza next day itself from there.

Also please suggest possible itinerary, I am planning to start ride from delhi after 4-4.30 PM (Fri, 1st July) & to stay at Chandigarh on night. Then next day early morning to start the journey.

Well, yes, there are warnings of heavy rains in Himachal, please ride with caution as Kinnaur is not at a place to be stuck in with heavy rains. Until you enter Sptii Valley which is rain shadow region, you will not be spared from the rains.

There is change in our plan and we will be taking 4wd from Myles, given it will be rainy season that time enroute, what all permits do we have to take before we start.
Nitin, you only need permit if you are going from Manali side to Rohtang Pass. If you are coming from the other direction, you do not need any permits.
Planning to visit manali in August mid 2016 with parents…after visiting Vaishnodevi….by the look of it and reading the reviews,it seems August is not a good month to travel..what’s ur call on this Dheeraj? …is it completely impossible or worth taking the chance…?

Sp drving From Chandigarh to Manali and next day Manali to Spiti. We’re thinking of taking the route, which covers Rohtang pass and Kumzum Pass. If you are planning to go through manali u need to get permit there which is tedious process or you may waste a day there in manali to get pass. Better to through shimla and return via manali.
It also helps in acclimatization too if you go from Shimla side and hence you enjoy more.

We are a group of 5 and are planning to visit Spiti from Delhi (14th September – 25th September’16) via Shimla-Kinnaur route and planning to come back via Kunzum-Gramphu-Rohtang-Manali route. We shall be renting a self driven Mahindra XUV 500 for this trip.
We are carrying our own tents and sleeping bags to camp at Chandra Taal lake. Is it OK to camp at that time of the year?
And are there places other than Chandra Taal where we can setup our camps and spend the day/night in peace with a great view of the Himalayas?

We are well acclimatized to cold conditions as all of us have studied in Shimla and done couple of small treks in Parvati area and Sangla valley.
You cannot camp at the lake as it comes under wetland reserve and it is illegal to camp at Chandratal lake. You can pitch your camps at the camping sites available around 1 KM before the lake. You can camp almost anywhere you feel comfortable while traveling from Kinnaur to Spiti

There is just one question: At this time will it be good to stay one night at Kullu and visit Parvati Valley or rather visit Naggar and stay at Naggar Castle ?
Well, nothing up there in Kullu I guess you meant Kasol? Well Kasol and Naggar have different kind of experience with Kasol being all about ambience, great food, sometimes being high, foreigners/youngsters flooded in the town, sometimes smoking it up too in woods while Naggar is all about nature and peacefulness.

Yes Varun, September is a very good time to plan a trip to Spiti Valley. You can do entire trip of Spiti in your car as it has good ground clearance.
