Shanti Guest House, Leh | Hotel Review

19

There are quite a number of accommodation options available in Leh to suit every budget. One of the good economic options for stay in Leh is Shanti Guest House, just stones throw from Shanti Stupa and Changspa road. I had an opportunity to stay there in my Ladakh journey and here is the review for the same-

Shanti Guest House, Leh, Ladakh

Here is the complete review of Shanti Guest House, Leh – Ladakh —

Pictures:

Strange but true that due to some unavoidable circumstances (Leh -Ladakh flash floods), we didn’t click a single picture during our two day stay at Shanti Guest House :(…

Bookings:

Booking can be done by calling at one of these numbers

  • +91-1982-253084 or +91-1982-250023
  • Mobile: +91-9419178760, +91-9419888833, +91-9906982118

You can also check the web site at: Shanti Tours and Travel

The hotel almost runs full throughout the season so its always better to either book in advance or atleast ask them to keep the rooms for you

Price:

We got a room with four beds i.e. two double beds at a price of Rs 800 per day. The single double bed rooms were available for 300-500 per day. Of course, on the quoted prices overtelephone you always have the option to bargain 🙂 and generally the pricing is in the range mentioned above. It is one of the economic and decent option of stay which is nearby Changspa road and Shanti Stupa. Main market is about 2 KM walk from the hotel.

Location:

It is situated right on the Shanti Stupa road just ahead of Shanti Stupa. If you are coming from Changspa road towards Shanti Stupa, then you need to take a right from T-section to reach the hotel. If you are coming from Airport towards Shanti Stupa then continue straight ahead of Shanti Stupa untill you see the Shanit Guest House towards your left side.

Parking:

There is no room for parking inside the hotel. You will need to park your car on the road outside the hotel.

Phone Facility:

Phone facility along with STD is also available at the Hotel.

ATM:

ATMs are located in main market of Leh town and near Leh taxi stand, which are at a walkable distance of about 2-3 KMs.

Petrol Pump:

Fuel is available at Petrol pump in Leh town.

Medical Assistance:

You need to approach local Leh hospital for any medical assistance.

Personal Experience:

Rooms in the hotel were on the average side but if the price is taken into account then I shall say it was a very good deal. The rooms were basic and the cleanliness was up to the mark in the rooms. There was no TV in the room ( but there was one TV in dining room), atleast the one which we took. The bathroom in our room was not so clean as the rains have caused the mud to get onto the floor from the window. However, we were disappointed that it never got cleaned during our stay of two days. So, it was a bit turn-off. However, the situation was a but different at that time because of havoc caused by the floods.

There was a dinning room with ladakhi style sitting to experience the culture and a lawn as well in the hotel where you can have your meal. We didn’t take any meal there owing to the fact that Changspa road was in the vicinity which offers wide varities of cuisines. But, we tried Maggie at the hotel which was nice. The two ladies taking care of the hotel at that time, prepared the food.

There was a little garden at the back where you can relax your nerves if you like. The terrace of the Hotel also offered some really nice views of Shanti Stupa and the other side of it too.

Overall it was a pretty good stay and the price tag makes it complete VFM (value for money) stay option.

Attraction In-Around Hotel:

One can visit Shanti stupa, Changspa Road, Leh Main Market, Leh Palace etc from the hotel.

Conclusion:

If you are looking for the economic and decent option of stay and find yourself comfortable with basic/homes stay type accommodation then this hotel may certainly suit your style. Not recommended, if you are looking for greater comfort and luxury stay with price being not the factor for you.

    Hi dheeraj.
Firstly…its a brilliant brilliant website and initiative!!! From all adventure lovers of india…Thank You 🙂
    Now for my query.
Do they charge more in winters ??
We have booked for 2 days in feb. Price quoted is 1400rs for a double room. Should i take it or are there better options for the same amount.
    Thanks

    • Hello Shrikant,

Thank You for appreciating the efforts 🙂

Yes, probably they charge more in winters as there are less options available, in fact only few in winters. Then, food is a problem and secondly there is option of heaters and all too. That is why it is charged more. I would suggest to take it for couple of days when you land and acclimatize in Leh. Meanwhile if you find better deal at some guest house/hotel near Leh, then yes move to the other option 🙂

      Regards

        Hi again dheeraj.
Thanks for ur input. I’ll be doing exactly as u said. We need a place to stay only for the first coupla days as we will be headed on the chadar trek later on. Guess it makes more sense to stay in a comfy accomodation so we can acclimatise better for the daunting trek conditions.
The ladakh hotels database in the dow website, comprehensive as it is… i believe though is incomplete without information on which one of them stay open in wintersnd which ones do not. Our fresh batch of dow winter travellers (me included :-)) would be more than willing to help you update this info 🙂
        Thanks again 🙂

        • Hi Shrikant,

Thank you so very much if you can put up this information up here. I am currently working over Winter Ladakh Guide but I only publish articles which I have personally experienced, hence though even having that info. with me I am holding up just to make sure what I have written is what I have experienced 😀 😀

Please it will benefit many if you can pass on such information and share with all of us here.

          As per your instructions… I’ve been DoW’ed 🙂
Dheeraj could you please point out the must see spots during winter in ladakh & help me chalk a rought itinerary ?? As of now the plan is as follows…
We reach leh on 31st Jan.
          31st & 1st Feb – acclimatize and nearby shanti stupa & monasteries.
          2nd to 9th feb – chadar trek
As of yet undecided about what on 10th & 11th feb. And we leave on 12th morning.
I’m finding it hard to zero down on an accomodation near tso moriri post the trek. Also contemplating if a stay at hanle would be possible in this short window. The reason i’m keen on staying at either of these two spots is that i am an avid night photographer & looking forward to going nut at the uber clean skies that these places have to offer. Any inputs would be invaluable at this point of time 🙂

      • Mrs.Anagha Bhagat on

We are going to visit Leh in May,2013 last week from Mumbai. I am arranging individually for 2 families. I dont know about the permits required? What are they? Also I am confused between Shanti & Kidar. Budget wise I think Shanti is Ok but is Kidar of higer grade? We have selected Organic Retreat Camp at Nubra? will it be ok?
I am having experience in managing our tours for rest part of India.
Is any travel agency required to visit Leh?

Your advice is precious for me.

        • Hello Anagha,

You can go with any Shanti or Shaynam Hotel or Oriental GH or yes Kidar. Please go through the link here for everything you want to know related to Inner Line Permits for Leh – Ladakh. Organic retreat is nice option. I do not think you need any agency for the Ladakh trip, everything you want is present in the Ladakh section of the blog.

I hope this helps. Let me know incase you need more info. or have any queries or doubts.

          Regards

  5. The rates have increased by now or perhaps I have not bargained sufficiently.

They are asking for Rs 800 per day for a double room.

    • Yes, rates have been increased for both hotels and taxis by as much as 22% 🙁 … I will suggest stay at Shanti or Glacier View at Upper Tuckcha, close to main market…

      Regards
      Dheeraj
