Hi, would like to mention that this website is proving extremely helpful in planning my trip to Ladakh. As I do not own my own vehicle, I was planning on renting a self drive vehicle from Manali. According to a couple of articles I have read, self drive cars are banned in Ladakh and apparently are not welcomed by the local taxi drivers either. I do not want to face any troubles during the trip but at the same time want to drive the car myself to enjoy and take in the full experience. Would you be able to help me with this if you could. Thanks for taking the time to read this. Hoping to hear back from you, kind regards.
I know few car rental services which provide private vehicles for rental.

Self drive rented cars and taxis outside Ladakh are not allowed to do any sightseeing within Leh – Ladakh. You can use them for getting to Leh and getting out from Leh but not sightseeing. So, the self drive cars you are taking must have private number plate, mostly should be under your name, your wife name or your father name otherwise you will have to again hire a taxi within Ladakh and pay for your local taxi without using it. You can read: Rented Self Drive Cars in Leh – Ladakh Banned “FORCIBLY”
So, it is more like you have to pay twice one to drive the car in and out of Leh for self drive and other for taxi within Ladakh for sightseeing.
