Hey, me and two of my friends are planning a trip to Spiti next month. We’ve already booked our tickets to Delhi and have a rough itinerary planned based on a package that we were offered by an agent. I wanted to know from you how this itinerary sounds and what you think about it?

Here’s the itinerary

Day 1 / Oct 13Arrive Delhi and board overnight Volvo bus to Manali.
Day 2 / Oct 14 Arrival Manali. Pick up & straight drive to Chandertal we will cross Rohtang Pass, Batal in between. On arrival check in at Camps. Later visit lake and enjoy the serenity of Chandertal.
Day 3 / Oct 15-Morning visit Chandertal Lake followed by drive to Kaza,  we will cross Kunzum Pass , also we will see amazing landscapes during our journey. On arrival at Kyato take a diversion and visit Chicham village and Kibber  village. Further drive and arrive Kaza. Overnight at hotel.
Day 4 / Oct 16Full day excursion to Ki, Hikkim ,Comic & Langza.
Day 5 / Oct 17 Day excursion to Tabo & Dhankar Monastery. These are the most beautiful monasteries of this region.Evening return back to Kaza.
Day 6 / Oct 18 Morning check out from hotel & drive to
Manali Late afternoon arrive Manali and stay overnight in Manali.
Day 07 / Oct 19Day is free to explore Manali & evening departure to busstand to board overnight Volvo bus to Delhi which arrives Delhi next morning at 7 AM

does this sound like a good plan? also, what are the modifications required, if any?

I will highly recommend to do Chandratal while coming back as you will not be acclimatized. Also do Chandratal while traveling from Kaza to Manali and do not spend night there. It will be quite cold by that time of the year, so go prepared with proper woolens

Thanks for the response Dheeraj. 3 of us really look forward to cold temperatures and that’s the reason we plan trips like these. We had done a Pelling-Gangtok-Lachung-Yumthang Valley trip in January this year and we absolutely loved it! We definitely don’t want to miss out on the opportunity of staying a night at camps at Chandratal and we were told that we might not be able to stay overnight if we do it on our way back, and hence we planned it in the beginning of our trip. The night skies and the idea of the overnight camp stay at Chandratal fascinates us a lot, is it completely not recommended to do this?

Harsh, temperatures in Spiti Valley could go down around 5 degree in nights but cold winds makes it more colder than what reading says. Same is true for Chandratal where winds will be more. So, o prepared with woolen jackets and all.

Bhavjoth, there won’t be much changes in just 5-6 days in temperatures. So, if you are keen on spending night at Chandratal camps midst cold, then you should do it while coming back only. While traveling to Kaza from Manali and without acclimatization sleeping at 14000 can cause AMS and may spoil your rest of the trip.

Thanks Dheeraj! Appreciate your response. I spoke to Tenzin bhai from the camps and he said 15th is the last day for the camps, so we cannot possibly do it on our way back. So doing chandratal on our way back isn’t a possibility. And if we want to visit and do an overnight stay there, the way it is in our itinerary is the only way to go about it.

Hey Dheeraj,

Keeping in mind your advice and suggestion, we have changed our plans slightly and are not going to be staying overnight at the Chandratal camps

Here is our revised itenary, please let me know how this looks now without an overnight stay at Chandratal.

Day 1 / Oct 13Arrive Delhi and board overnight Volvo bus to Manali.
Day 2 / Oct 14 Arrival Manali and transfer to the hotel. Rest of the day is at leisure. Overnight at hotel.
Day 3 / Oct 15Today morning we will drive to Chandertal by crossing Rohtang Pass, Batal in between. On arrival visit lake and enjoy the serenity of Chandertal. Drive to Losar and overnight stay at Losar
Day 4 / Oct 16-Morning drive to Kaza,  we will cross Kunzum Pass , also we will see amazing landscapes during our journey. On arrival at Kyato take a diversion and visit Chicham village and Kibber  village. Further drive and arrive Kaza. Overnight at hotel.
Day 5 / Oct 17Full day excursion to Ki, Hikkim ,Comic & Langza.
Day 6 / Oct 18 Day excursion to Tabo & Dhankar Monastery. These are the most beautiful monasteries of this region.Evening return back to Kaza.
Day 7 / Oct 19 Morning check out from hotel & drive to
Manali Late afternoon arrive Manali and stay overnight in Manali.
Day 08 / Oct 20Day is free to explore Manali & evening departure to busstand to board overnight Volvo bus to Delhi which arrives Delhi next morning at 7 AM
Day 09 / Oct 21Arrive Delhi at 7 AM and proceeds for onward journey.

Does this sound like a better, more viable plan? Thanks in advance!

I will still prefer to do Chandratal on the way back as you are anyways not staying at Chandratal. Do Manali to Kaza directly to minimize chances of AMS while sleeping at Chandratal or Losar. Kaza will be much better and less cold in comparison. Do Chandratal while going back to Manali from Kaza.
