Manali – Leh Taxi Prices | To Be Hiked by 30%

28

The tours in Manali and then further to Leh – Ladakh are going to become more costlier by as much as 20-30% very soon. Him-Anchal Taxi Union has decided to discuss this hike and get it into affect very soon after discussions with SDM in Manali. All this is happening due to the price hike of about Rs 7.5 recently for Petrol  … However, I am totally confused that when majority of taxis run on Diesel then how can rise in Petrol prices shall affect the prices of taxi fares 😉 … Must be my ill-knowledge about the fuel on which Manali taxis run :D…

With increase in Leh – Ladakh taxi union prices by as much as 22% this year (2012-13 Ladakh taxi rates linked here), I guess this was also bound to happen. So, overall a not so good news for the families/youngsters planning their trips to Leh – Ladakh and Manali as now they would have to bear more cost for their trips. Of course, June being the peak season time, the price hike can never have been better for Manali taxi union to exploit already handicapped tourists who are also banned from plying their private vehicles on Manali – Rohtang Pass road. So, in the end they have to dig a big hole in their pockets having no other choice than to take the taxi to Rohtang Pass 😥

Read More Below:

MANALI, 28 May 2012: Tourists visiting Kullu-Manali in June may have to spend some extra money on transportation as Manali taxi union has decided to increase taxi charges by 30% following the hike in petrol prices.

“Taxi operators are facing problems in continuing with last year’s fares. We are asking for a slight increase to cover our expenses,” Him-Anchal Taxi Operators’ Union president Puran Chand said. They had decided not to increase fares if fuel prices were increased only Rs 2-3, but an increase of Rs 7.50 is unbearable, he said. “We will soon have a meeting with SDM and would apply for an increase of 20% to 30% in existing prices,” he added.

The current charges for a full day tour to Rohtang pass by a basic car is Rs 1,700 which could become Rs 2,100 next month. Similarly, charges would be increased for local and long routes. Leh – Ladakh jeep safari tours are going to begin soon. The basic cost of Rs 17,000 for 2 day-long Manali-Leh tour is expected to increase to Rs 21,000 this year, sources said.

A taxi driver, Rakesh Sharma, said that mileage of cars reduces almost by half in congested and potholed roads and drivers are not able to save according to their hard work. “Petrol prices have been increased many times, but we are offering services at old rates. Now, keeping in view the fuel price and geography of Manali, taxi fares needed to be increased,” he said.

With over 2,200 cabs, Manali taxi union is the largest taxi union of the state. A tourist spends about 50% cost of his budget on transportation and this way, the tour to Manali will become a little expensive in coming days, sources said.

  1. Dear Dhirajji,

We are group of 6 friends from Gujarat. As per your advice, we have planned for ladakh trip in 2 /3 week of September this year.
We will take srinagar leh manali route.
We can spare full 5 days in Leh. Let me suggest a itinerary for five days in Leh.
Also inform me the weather in 3rd week of September in Leh.

I have read many articles and particularly your chats on the devils on wheels. I found it very interesting.

    • Hello SP Tanna,

For 5 days within Leh – Ladakh, you can follow the below itinerary:

  2. Hi Dheeraj,

You have helped this site increase its number of hits. 🙂 M sure many would have had a memorable Ladakh trip with your inputs. BDW, how many times have you visited ladakh? :p

I too need some inputs from you. We are gang of 7 planning for 11th Aug to 21st Aug (11 days n 10 nights) trip. Our planned route is Manali – Leh – Srinagar. We have already booked air tickets so route cannot be changed now. Below, is our itenary.

11th Aug: Pick up from Delhi and drive for Manali.
12th Aug : Arrive Manali hotel, Evening — Sight Seeing at manali.Overnight at Manali.
13th Aug : Early Morning drive starts from Manali till Sarchu.Overnight at Sarchu.
14th Aug : Drive from Sarchu and travel to leh…………reach Leh at
    night…………..stay at hotel at leh.
15th Aug : Leh to Pangong lake and Stay at Camp/Hotel at Pangong.
16th Aug : Return Leh and see some local sight seeing late evening.
17th Aug : Leh to Nubra valley and stay at Hundar.
18th Aug: Return Leh and see some local sight seeing late evening.
19th Aug : Early Morning departure to Kargil and stay at kargil.
20th Aug : Early departure to Srinagar from kargil and reach Srinagar by
afternoon and stay at hotel……local sight seeing at Srinagar at late
    evening
21st Aug : After Breakfast departure to Srinagar Airport.

    I have few queries :-
    1) We have not included Tso Moriri lake. Seeing some of your posts i guess there is a route connecting manali and Tso Moriri lake. So can we cover Tso Moriri while starting from Manali and then go to Leh. If yes, please suggest the route and revised itenary.
    2) While returning from Leh to Kargil, instead of stayig at kargil can we stay at gulmarg? We are not keen to spend a day at srinagar. Instead we prefer gulmarg. Where and how can we accomodate this in our itenary. We have a 2PM flight for mumbai from srinagar on 21st.
    3) We have booked a white platted (non tourist) car from delhi. Can we use this car to visit different places in ladakh, after having valid permits? Is there a cap on number of passangers that can travel in a single vehicle in ladakh? I heard somehwere that only 4-5 ppl are allowed in cab in ladakh.
    4) We are all excited to see snow atleast at some place. Will we find snow at any place during this time of d year? Kardangula or gulmarg?

Please do let us know any additional suggestions you can recommend for our plan.

Being in IT, i understand how busy life is in IT. Appreciate your time and response. Thanks a lot in advance .

    • Hello Dhaval,

Thanks alot. First of all, my suggestions on the itinerary:

13th Aug : Early Morning drive starts from Manali till Keylong or Jispa only. Overnight at Jispa or Keylong
14th Aug : Drive from Jispa/Keylong and travel to leh…………reach Leh at
      night…………..stay at hotel at leh.
      — Avoid sleeping at Sarchu or Pang at any cost while going to Leh from Manali because your body will not be acclimatized by the time you reach there. It is always better to stay either at Keylong/Jispa so that you minimize the chances for falling sick or hit by AMS while going to Leh from Manali. And, then next day carry on the rest of the journey to Leh without sleeping in between anywhere by leaving early in the morning say, by 4-5 AM types. I prefer staying at Jispa more because Keylong gives the feeling of a town while Jispa is more closer to nature having Bhaga river running just aside the Manali – Leh Highway at Jispa. If you are coming back via Manali – Leh, then it should be OK to stay at Sarchu as your body will be acclimatized by that time.

15th Aug : Leh to Nubra valley and stay at Hundar.
16th Aug: Return Leh and see some local sight seeing late evening.
17th Aug : Leh to Pangong lake and Stay at Camp/Hotel at Pangong.
18th Aug : Return Leh and see some local sight seeing late evening.
      — You should do Nubra Valley first and then Pangong Tso to avoid AMS hit you again. This is better way of doing in terms of acclimatization.

      Coming to your queries:
      1. You cannot do it from Manali side, as first you need permits and second your body will not be acclimatized to sleep there so early.

      2) Nopes, going directly to Gulmarg will be very very very long day. So, better do it at ease and spend night at Kargil first and may be next day you can leave early and stay at Gulmarg instead of Srinagar but then you have to catch the flight next morning itself, so better not do it.

      3) There is no limit on number of people in a cab, I have seen infact even 10 people in one car as well. Since, it is white number plate it will be allowed in Ladakh but to travel on Manali – Rohtang Pass road, you will need permits from Manali SDM office. Also, if inquired anywhere in Ladakh, be sure that all of you are on same page to whom the car belongs.

      4) Very much unlikely 🙁

I hope this helps. Let me know incase you need more info. or have any queries or doubts.

      Regards
      Dheeraj Sharma

      • HI Dheeraj,

Thanks a lot for your response. Based on your suggestions we have modified our itinerary. Basically, to add Tso Moriri lake we have dropped a rest/Local sight seeing day in Manali. Also revised to visit Nubra 1st and then Pangong Lake.

        Below is the revised plan.

11th Aug : Volvo from Delhi at 6PM to Manali (531 Km).
12th Aug : Reach Manali at 10AM. Drive starts from Manali at 12PM towards Jispa (139 KM). Stay at Jispa.
13th Aug : Morning Drive from Jispa and travel to leh (330 KM).reach Leh at night….stay at hotel at leh.
14th Aug : Leh to Nubra valley (128 KM) and stay at Hundar.
15th Aug : Return Leh from Hundar (128 KM) and rest for the whole day.
16th Aug : Very early morning drive from Leh to Pangong lake (185 KM) and Stay at Camp/Hotel at Pangong.
17th Aug : start journey from Pangong to Reach Tso moriri lake (235 KMs) by evening …….night stay at Tso Moriri.
18th Aug : Leave for Leh at around 11 AM (240 KM)…….Evening reach at leh and stay at hotel.
19th Aug: Leave for Drass (287 KM). Night stay at Drass.
20th Aug : Early Morning leave for Sonamarg (63 Km). night stay at Sonamarg.
21st Aug : Early morning 6 AM leave for srinagar Airport (84 KM). Reach Srinagar by 10 AM. Flight for Mumbai at 2PM.

Route taken from Pangong lake to Tso Moriri –
        Spangmik (Pangong Tso) – Man (9 KMs) – Merak (12 KMs)– Khaltse (4 KMs) – Chusul (24 KMs) – Tsaga La (33 KMs) – Tsaga Village (20 KMs) – Loma (23 KMs) – Nyoma (22 KMs) – Mahe (25 KMs) – Sumdo (10 KMs) – Tso Moriri / Korzok (53 KMs) = 235 KMs

Route taken from Tso Moriri to Leh –
Tso Moriri – Tso Kar – Debring – Taglang La – Rumste – Upshi – Karu – Leh

        Does this plan look good?

We are still confused about last 3 days (19th to 21st August). We can drop sonmarg if v can cover few more places or even rest in ladakh on 19th and leave for Kargil (230 Km) on 20th morning from Ladakh. But, in that case we will need to leave kargil very early on 21st to reach srinagar (204 KM) by 10 AM (our flight is at 2 PM). Also,in this case we wont b able to visit drass/vijay smarak n all.
Please help us with plan from 19th to 21st August so that we cover all places. We can drop Sonmarg. We are not planning to have any night journey by road on any day (except delhi to manali).

Also, can you recommend any tour operator which can help us with our whole trip (Cab and hotel bookings) as above starting from Manali and Ending srinagar.

If not tour operators, some recommended good and safe cab drivers (had read your post somewhere on cab drivers numbers) who can help us.We will book hotels by own in this case.

Your help and suggestions are highly appreciated. :)Thanks again in advance.

        • Hello Dhaval,

Plan looks much better now but I had inquired and still DC office is not issuing the permits for direct route to Pangong Tso to Tso Moriri. Hence, you may not be able to do that. Instead, if you want then do Pangong Tso to Tso Moriri via traditional route only leaving early in the day. It also has an advantage of better road conditions. I will say better drop Sonamarg and do Tso Moriri and Pangong Tso at ease as two day trip from Leh only. On 19th – Leh – Kargil and on 20th Kargil – Srinagar and on 21st take flight back home.

No need for any tour operator, you have the plan and below links will provide you all the good hotels and taxi drivers whom you may contact and complete your trip + save good amount of money too with more flexibility.

For accommodation, check the nice, preferred list of accommodation options in entire Leh – Ladakh including moderate and cheap budget hotels as well in the series of articles starting on the link here

For the current leh – ladakh taxi union rate list 2012-13 including the contacts of some reliable taxi drivers within Leh – Ladakh, check the link here. You can get about 10-15% of discount by directly getting in touch with drivers and of course, talking in person rather on phone always help in bargaining more.

Check the list of things to carry for Leh – Ladakh or other trip including basic medical kit, clothing, must haves etc. at the link here: List of Things to Carry for Leh – Ladakh trip.

I hope that helps. Please let me know incase you need more details or have some queries or doubts.

          Regards
          Dheeraj Sharma

        • Hi Dheeraj,
          Thanks a lot again.
As per your suggestion we have changed our plan to go tso moriri from Pangong via traditional route only.
          i.e Spangmik(Pangong Tso) – Lukung (16 KMs) – Tangtse (34 KMs) – Durbuk (9 KMs) – Chang La (32 KMs) – Sakti (34 KMs) – Karu (10 KMs) – Upshi (13 KMs) – Kumdok (19 KMs) – Kere (53 KMs) – Chumathang (34 KMs) – Mahe (22 KMs) – Sumdo (10 KMs) – Korzok or Tso Moriri(53 KMs) = 339 KMs

But, we are planning to cover this route in 1 day directly from Pangong to tso moriri without going back to leh for overnight as we want to spend one night at Tso Moriri. We are planning to see sun rise at pangong and leave around 9AM from there on 17th August. Hope covering this route in 1 day is not a challenge or it is? It will be stressfull but we are OK if we can reach safely in 1 day (wihout night travel) by around 7-8PM. Will this be very difficult to cover in 1 day? Cos from many post we saw people stay back at leh and next day leave for tso moriri. Please advise..

Also we are planning to take advance permits through a agent for both the routes. Just incase the direct route is open we will go by that route. Are this agents reliable in terms of getting proper permits in advance?

As you suggested we will stay in Kargil on 19th and on 20th srinagar.

I think our plan is perfectly set now. Many thanks to you for helping us out and for providing so much usefull information.

We will surely update you about our trip and share pics on FB.

Shall bother you incase of any doubt. Thanks! 🙂

        • Hi Dhaval,

In one day it will really be difficult. It is easily about 12+ Hrs of journey. So, you have to leave early in the morning from Pangong Tso or you must have least breaks on the way back. If you will leave by 9 AM and you do not cross Chumathang before 5 PM types, then my advice will be stay at Chumathang only. You will not be getting more than 30 KMPH average speed, hence 12 Hrs is easily a probability.

Mostly the agents are reliable but for Changthang route, it would be better you take it yourself. All the best for your trip and yes, would surely look forward for your pictures!!

I hope this helps. Let me know incase you need more info. or have any queries or doubts.

          Regards
          Dheeraj Sharma

  3. hey Dhiraj… Just reading through your website… quite informative….

I wanted to know if shared commuting is possible from Leh to MAnali and Manali to Delhi… I am on exploration August end… just struggling with the return air fare..would much appreciate your help on this..

    • Hello Chetan,

Yes, sharing is fairly easy to get on Manali – Leh Highway at least in the direction of Manali from Leh. For Manali to Leh, either I will suggest you opt for HPTDC bus Service that includes overnight stay and dinner at Keylong in the fare OR you might want to get in touch with local travel agents who do it on shared basis with overnight stay at Sarchu or Keylong. Do not opt for the one with overnight stay at Sarchu even if the guy says, it will be OK for you to sleep overnight with less acclimatized body. My bet is always on HPTDC bus while going from Manali to Leh for less number of travelers. Other shared taxis available would do the cannon ball run of about 16 Hrs without any night halt from Manali to Leh.

I hope this helps. Let me know incase you need more info. or have any queries or doubts.

      Regards
      Dheeraj Sharma

      • hey Dhiraj…. thanks for your helpful response…. the query is for the other direction.. i am flying into Leh…. but return air fares are too much so thot of taking a sharing travel to Delhi…

  4. kesavan sreeprakash on

Hello Dheeraj, Very interesting and informative website. Two of us from the US and one person from Mysore, all around 60 years of age, but in fairly good shape want to do some trekking in the ladakh/himachal area between 11th and 22nd August of this year. Please advise of best itineraries. Thanks

    • Hello Mr. Keswan,

Thanks alot. Though I am not that much of a trekker, but still seeing the number of days in hand, I think Marka Valley Treks or Stok Kangri trek might suits you well.

      Regards
      Dheeraj Sharma

  5. Hi Dheeraj,

I plan to take a bus from Delhi to Manali (of HP tourism) and then another bus (also of HP tourism) to travel from Manali to Leh. The bus of HP tourism runs on alternate days.

I just have one fear. What if the first bus gets delayed and I am unable to catch the second bus? Losing the money is one issue, but other than that; what options would I then have to travel to Leh.

I know cabs would be available, but how good an idea would that be, considering that I would be travelling alone?

Personally, would you suggest me to go by flight and then return by road?

My questions may not seem logical for you; but the fact is that I am a bit apprehensive as I would be travelling to Leh for the first time and that too alone. I would appreciate if you could give me any sort of information, that would calm me down. 🙂

    Regards,

    Arjun

    • Hello Arjun,

Well, talk to HPTDC guys what can be done in such a case. I will say since, you have booked the ticket and if some how the bus to Manali from Delhi gets delayed by more than 4 Hrs, then you would be missing the Leh bus. That HPTDC bus will stop at Keylong for overnight stay and since, you have the ticket with you, you can catch a shared taxi to Keylong and catch the bus in the evening at Keylong where they will be staying at Hotel Chandrabhaga. Next morning leave with them.

Best option will be to travel the next day after you reach Manali, so that you at least get some kind of feel of hills to your body before directly climbing to Jam prone Rohtang Pass.

I hope this helps. Let me know incase you need more info. or have any queries or doubts.

      Regards
      Dheeraj Sharma

      • Thanks a lot Dheeraj, it's so nice of you to be doing this. I'll try to get an extra day's leave from office and reach Manali a day before. That seems to be the best option. Thanks again.

    • Well, yess but the funny thing is that they are hiking prices for something that runs on Diesel 😥 … I feel it is more to exploit the heavy tourist rush for Manali and those going to Leh – Ladakh via manali.

      Regards
      Dheeraj Sharma

        • Hello Vedant,

For the current leh – ladakh taxi union rate list 2012-13 including the contacts of some reliable taxi drivers within Leh – Ladakh, check the link here. You can get about 10-15% of discount by directly getting in touch with drivers and of course, talking in person rather on phone always help in bargaining more.

For queries related to budget for Leh – Ladakh trip, I am sure the link below will help you alot for getting an idea of overall budget:
How to calculate cost or budget for Leh – Ladakh trip

Regarding your plan for 12 days:

Day 1 | Delhi – Leh (By Flight)
          — Checkin at Hotel. Many hotels provide free pick and drop from Airport. Ask while you book them.
          — Take ample of rest as well as water or anything that keep your body hydrated enough. DO NOT OVER HYDRATE. Take ORS Soluted water or ORS – L tetra packs from home.
          — Do not over exert your body at any cost. Avoid too much up-down on stairs or avoid it in entirety, if possible.
          — After 5-6 Hrs of rest you can visit Leh Palace, Local Leh market, Shankar Gompa .
          — If you feel exerted go back to Hotel, have dinner at Hotel and take rest. Avoid any exertion. Else continue and,
          — Follow the sunset by stroll at Changspa road and have a nice dinner on varied cuisines offered in-around Changspa road.
          — Go back to hotel for overnight stay at Leh.

Day 2 | Leh Local Sighseeing + Inner Line Permits
          — For more details on inner line permits process and to download application form read the link here: http://devilonwheels.com/index.php/inner-line-per
          — Hire a taxi from Leh taxi stand or Hotel whichever suits you.
          — Bargain hard with taxi driver. Book that single taxi for entire trip after explaining the complete plan.
          — Take his inputs if you feel reasonable and if required modify the plan accordingly but should suits you best.
          — Ask him to be with you guys starting first day itself, if required and charged reasonable else do it at your own.
          — Again DO NOT over exert and take little steps and slow walks only.
          — If feeling OK then do Local sightseeing include Namgyal Gompa, Leh Palace, Shanti Stupa, Shankar Gompa, Main Market, Hall of Fame, Spituk Gompa, Changspa Road Stroll in evening
          — Do not use stairs at any of these places just to see them as it will exert your body much more.
          — Overnight at Leh

          Day 3 | Leh – Khardung La – Diskit – Hunder
          — Head for Nubra Valley and stay overnight at Hunder / Diskit
          — On the way enjoy a cup of soup at Highest Motorable Pass (as claimed) Khardung La
          — Diskit has monasteries with tallest lord Buddha statue and Hunder has sand dunes and bacterian camel safari

          Day 4 | Hunder / Diskit – Sumur – Panamik – Sumur – Khardung La – Leh
          — Sumur has a famous monastery to check out and Panamik has hot water springs
          — Overnight at Leh

Day 5 | Leh – Hemis Monastery – Pangong Tso Lake
          — Cover either of Hemis, Thicksey and Shey on the go towards Pangong Tso
          — Overnight at Pangong Tso (Spangmik or Lukung)

Day 6 | Pangong Tso Lake – Thicksey Monastery – Shey Palace – Leh
          — Cover either of Hemis, Thicksey and Shey on return to Leh
          — Overnight at Leh

Day 7 | Rest day at Leh to enjoy local culture and some shopping OR Monastery tour OR or you can do tour to Sham Valley
          — Monastery tour may include Hemis, Thicksey, Stakna and Shey monasteries. They come on the route of Pangong Tso but as you will be doing day trip, it will be a bit hectic to include them on that day only.
          — Sham Valley include Alchi, Likir, Basgo Palace, Magnetic Hills, Confluence at Nimmu, , Gurudwara Pather Sahib
          — Overnight at Leh

Day 8 | Leh – Tso Moriri via Chumathang
