Manali Leh Highway Status 2015

424

It is March 2015 and all the adventure junkies or lovers of Leh – Ladakh lovers know what this means… BRO starts the snow clearance operation over 474 KM long Manali Leh Highway for the season 2015 – 16. This time again the snow stock is huge and some sections of Manali – Leh Highway have broken records of snow for last 36 years 😯 😯 Rohtang and Baralacha Pass have recieved almost about 40 feet of snow this year, much much more than last few years. We need to see when the roads to Leh – Ladakh will open in 2015 so that we, the adventure lovers, will start our annual adventure pilgrimage to the heaven called Ladakh. BRO will start the snow clearance operations on Manali – Leh Highway by mid of March, a delayed start as compared to last few years due to bad/inclement weather in last week or so over entire Northern region of India. The snow clearance operation will start after offering prayers at Gulaba, about 23 KMs from Manali and BRO will brave again the tougest of conditions to open the Manali – Leh Highway.

Since, there will be already a delayed start to snow clearance operations by couple of weeks, this year Manali – Leh Highway is expected to open late in the season, consider may be June first week type as per the last few years pattern. However, BRO plans or claims to open the Manali – Leh Highway in May but like previous years, only weather gods will have the last say in it. I personally expect no less than last week of May and even when the highway gets open it needs at least couple of weeks to settle or get stabilized from initial snow sliding / avalanches that happens due to quick melting of snow and disturbed balance due to snow cutting operations.

As per the earlier years, I will be starting this sticky post for Manali Leh Highway Status 2015 which so many adventure lovers await every year. However, instead of updating the main article here at DoW Blog, I will keep the updated progress in the DoW Community thread for the status for better tracking of updates. A Forum Topic always helps in better updates tracking as well as collation of info in time organized manner. Hence, for all updates on Manali – Leh Highway status 2015 after this initial post, please stay tuned to the topic in DoW Community: Manali – Leh Highway Status 2015 | DoW Community Thread

Manali Leh Highway Status 2015
Manali Leh Highway Status 2015

Once the Manali Leh road opens, I may not be that active in frequently updating the status because these roads close and open on frequent basis. It is barely impossible for a single tiny soul like me to update this information on daily basis once the road gets open, so please request you to excuse me on that front and accept my apologies :)… However, if there is some major blockade of 3 – 4 days, I will try to surely update such information about Manali Leh Highway status 2015. That is another reason to keep updated and subscribed to the DoW Community Thread for bettwe tracking.

I hope as per the last year, this year as well this article thread will be useful in planning your journey on Manali – Leh Highway and further to Leh – Ladakh.

UPDATE from 9th June 2014
The Rohtang Pass Permit for Manali to Leh, Keylong (Lahaul) and Kaza (Spiti) is now being issued at an official camp setup at Gulaba ahead of Kothi, from green tax barrier at Chauri-Bihal and Shuru, SDM Office Manali, Tourist information center Manali and in the office of HPTDC. This year the congestion charges of Rs. 50/- per vehicle has to be paid which includes both Motor Bike and Cars… The traffic is allowed from 4 AM in the morning to 11 PM at night, after which traffic will not be allowed. Hence, it is suggested to start at 3 AM from Manali to avoid long traffic jams, especially in June, to Rohtang Pass. For Manali to Rohtang Pass, only 400 tourists vehicles/taxis (HP Registered) are allowed in the batches per day beyond Gulaba to snow point of Marhi or Rohtang Pass.

Again, for all latest updates on Manali – Leh Highway Status after this initial post on DoW Blog, please stay tuned to the topic in DoW Community: Manali – Leh Highway Status 2015 | DoW Community Thread

Manali – Leh Highway Status = CLOSED | Update Date: 5th March, 2015

MANALI, 5th March 2015: Border Roads Organization (BRO) is all set to start its snow clearing operation on strategically important Manali-Leh highway, one of the highest and dangerous highways of the world. The operation, which is already delayed due to inclement weather conditions, is expected to start in mid-March. Generally Manali-Leh road is thrown open for vehicular traffic in late April or early May, but this year opening of the road may take little more time.

Heavy winter snowfall blocks Manali-Leh highway every year in November and BRO starts removing snow from the highway from Gulaba, near 23km north of Manal, every year on March 1. But conditions are not similar this year. Some parts of Manali-Leh highway received highest snow in last 36 years while more snow is likely in next two months. Some parts along the highway, particularly near Rohtang and Baralacha Pass, have received over 40 feet of snow. Sources said that cutting through the thick sheet of snow is not easy this year and can delay opening of Manali-Leh highway.

“Bad weather conditions, heavy snowfall and avalanche warnings have forced us to delay the snow clearing operation,” BRO commander Colonel K P Rajendera Kumar said, who looks after operations of 38 Border Road Task Force. “There is prediction for more snowfall and threat of avalanches. We are expecting to start clearing snow towards Rohtang Pass in second or third week of March.”

Manali-Leh highway has completely disappeared below thick a sheet of snow beyond Kothi, 12km from Manali. Clearing snow from the road is not the only challenge but finding the exact trail on the highway with nearly hundred hair-pin bends without falling into any gorge is the main challenge. Cutting dozens of avalanches, escaping fresh avalanches, facing blizzards and working under temperature 20 degrees or more below freezing point are some of the major challenges before BRO.

“We will first concentrate on Rohtang Pass and then put all efforts on Baralacha Pass. Meanwhile, we are trying to open Keylong-Sissu and Keylong-Darch highways. As soon as weather will turn favourable, we shall start the operation,” Colonel Rajendra said.

  1. Any update delhi-manali-leh route due to rain?…we are starting on 13th Aug morning for Manali by road.

    Any suggestion would be helpful!

  2. Hello Dheeraj,

    In news everywhere is rain & rain,what is the status in Delhi-Manali-Rohtang rout?Not heard any news frm this side.We are starting our trip by road on 13th Aug…

    • Priyanka, Delhi – Manali – Rohtang is also not spared. There was a massive landslide a few days back in Mandi that closed the road for a day or so. Right now it is open. But, rivers are flowing in spate. I would suggest to wait and see the predictions of rains during that period.

  3. Sarjeet Singh on

    Dheeraj Ji may I know that is there any rule (ODD or EVEN number) apply for Vehicles for going to LEH- LADDAKH from 17.04.2015. Is that true or not.

    • Sarjeet, Odd/Even rule is applicable on Rohtang Pass at Manali – Leh Highway which will as of now is only applicable for April month. If it will conitnue or not, time will tell.

      • sahil pandita on

        Sir, do you have any updates on Odd/Even rule if a person is coming via Spiti vally road, will the same rule be applied for them ?
        Also, is this rule applicable for bikes as well ?

  4. Hi Dheeraj,

    Have gone through some of your revert and found mid July we can avoid going Leh via Manali route by JEEP (Four wheel drive car).
    We are actually planning in Mid August (14 / 15 / 16) -2016.

    Believe you have good knowledge on the matter, can you please guide whether to go for the trip or not.

    Please do let us know asap as we are almost finalist the dates.

    Thanks
    Hardik

    • Hardik, It is monsoon time in general up there in North and at some parts of Manali – Leh Highway (like before Baralacha La) and Srinagar – Leh Highway (like before Kargil) you might need to face monsoon hassles but once you get closer to Ladakh, then Ladakh being rain shadow region is least affected by monsoon rains, though rains does reach Ladakh now but to minimum and mostly it might remains overcast conditions. There is no thumb rule of certainty about weather conditions but above is generally common pictures seen over last few years except ugly 2010 …

      Please refer the link in our community: FAQ | Is Monsoon season good time to travel to Ladakh? for more details.

    • Hello,

      We are also planning a trip from Delhi via Manali route by Xylo from 12thAug evening-20th August.
      As per Dheeraj reply route would be fine…any other things we need to take care as we would have kids of age 7yrs & 13yrs…

      • In general, it is fine to take the children of such age group because AMS do not matter with respect to age or sex or any fitness level. It can happen to anyone of any age or sex or fitness I shall say :D.. The issue with children is that they tend to exert the body considering it the same kind of place they belong to and this elevates the chances of getting struck with AMS. Secondly, they are not much expressive about their uneasy feelings, so it is parents who need to watch out and take care that the child is not suffering from uneasy feelings, headache or nausea and is behaving properly. With 5+ year child, I think he/she would be able to convey the uneasiness with little efforts. If you notice any such feeling or he/she tells you about such a feeling then please do not ascend anywhere, either descend to lower altitude or stay at the same place to watch things overnight and if symptom increase then start descending immediately. Same is applicable for any adult as well. And yes, do keep the body adequately hydrated!!

        Roads will have slush and I will suggest you to read: 10 Tips for a Trip to Ladakh in Monsoons

        • Thanks Dheeraj for the inputs,As per your suggestions provided on the site we are taking care and we hope we would have awesome trip…

        • I am sure you would have a rocking trip !! 🙂 🙂 … Will look forward to read about your experience or see some pictures in Dow Community.

    • Faheem, It will take 4 days to reach Leh from Srinagar side starting from Delhi and 3 days to come back from Leh from Manali side to Delhi. This makes it 7 days. 1 Day is required in Leh for acclimatization. You have about 10 days. 1 Day can be used as Day trip to Pangong Tso and other day can be used as day trip to Nubra Valley or just Khardung La pass.

      Check the list of things to carry for Leh – Ladakh or other trip including basic medical kit, clothing, must haves etc. at the link here: List of Things to Carry for Leh – Ladakh trip.

        Thanks & Regards

        • Faheem, 2nd May is too early to attempt Manali – Leh Highway especially when there is tons of Snow that has fallen in past few days. Try for late May or early June. Plan is doable, Udhampur to Drass will be quite Long. Then sleeping at Pangong Tso on day 6 without acclimatization is risking the chances of severe AMS. Not sure what you meant by Sumodo here? If you are talking about Sumdo which is on the way to Tso Moriri lake, well there isn’t any place to stay. You may choose Sarchu.

          Over all, the plan is very very hectic.

        • I really thank you for your reply . I would like to tell you something ,that is, unfortunately we can’t go late May or early June. To us , 2 nd May is more convenient when considering the leave of my friends . So , if we make this trip on 2 nd May, what are the precautions should we take to enjoy ourselves there ? if you could tell me about this that would be great . and one more thing I did’t understand AMS .

        • Well, on an average you will be on road for 8-9 Hrs every day and that too at high altitude means much more wear and tear of the body than in plains where our body is used to wear and tear + fatigue.

  7. Subhadut Sarkar on

    Dear Dheeraj
    i am planning for a cycling trip from Manali to Leh in Aug/Sept 2016. Can you suggest me so organizers who arranges such activity.

  8. hey dheeraj,
    I read 5 reason to avoid on Octobes still we are planning but my leave will be same month .we are planning to go toleh by bike.same time supposed to go by train maximum and we will take our bike to leh. We have own tent. which route will be better to go.jammu- leh or chandhigrah-leh

    • Jeswin, it is always quite risky to travel as you have already gone through the article and understand the risks. So, I will not stress further on it. Though I mostly advice to travel from Srinagar- Leh highway but I will here suggest to risk AMS, which can be fatal too so please keep in mind, and cross Manali – Leh Highway as soon as possible in October as you can as you already taking the risk so better reduce the risk by covering the Manali – leh road early

        • Mohit, Keylong will not be possible in March BUT Spiti Valley from Kinnaur side will be possible. However, conditions in Spiti Valley will be very harsh during that time of the year, no hotels will be open, very basic food will be available and toilets may not have any water.

    • Sujit, snowfall has started and road to Rohtang Pass was closed yesterday. In case there is much snowfall in coming days, then the road will close to Rohtang Pass. Post mid of November army will declare Rohtang Pass closed officially.

  9. Hello, we are leaving on 30th sept to delhi & from there reach leh via manali on road. pls share the latest updates on the snow fall & road clearances. can we take the srinagar route instead?? we are planning to be in leh on 3,4 & 5th Oct. Pls suggest how can we make this trip.

    • Preetham, check the weather conditions and then take a call to travel on Manali – Leh Highway. It is better that you do it now as later you do the greater is the risk.

      • We changed our plan. We are taking flight directly to leh on 1st of Oct. N visit pangong & nubra valley. We hav return ticket from Srinagar. Can this be possible given the chances of snow fall in the srinagar highway. Do we get bikes for rental bet 2-5oct. Pls tell us

  12. Hey guys, What is the road status from shimla to kaza? we are planing to leave tomorrow from Delhi any updates would be helpful.
    Thanks

    • Sandeep Brar on

      Hi Dheeraj,
      We r a group of 4 ppl planning 2 visit Leh-Ladakh by
      road in our XUV 500 during September end… we
      reside @ Chandigarh so wud start our trip from
      Chandigarh via Srinagar-Leh highway on September
      24, 2015 & return on October 04, 2015 probably via
      Leh-Manali highway… Is this plan appropriate as per
      climatic & road conditions?? Any other suggestions??
      Kindly guide us.

      • Sandeep, it will be quite very cold when traveling from Leh to Manali over Manali – Leh Highway with most camp sites at Sarchu and Pang winded up. You need to travel from Leh to Jispa to make a stay for you. So, leave early on that day rest should seems to be fine.

    hi Dheeraj,
    we are six person & want to go manali to leh on 22 or 23 august2015 by innova suv. I want to know the weather condition & road condition is better for our tour on that dates ?

  14. Hi Dheeraj,

    Hope you are doing well. I read your post about avoid Leh Manali in october. But still I would like to ask you regarding this matter. According to our plan to visit Ladakh, we supposed to be on Leh-Manali highway on 12th and 13th october, 2015.

    Whats your opinion on this? Do you think we should go for it or we should take flight from delhi to leh?

    Please let us know your thoughts.

    Thanks

    • Arin, all depends how much risk you want to take. It is a risky affair to travel on those roads during that time. Even the camps which setup there also wind up by that time mostly unless Raid-De- Himalayas have not booked them up. The conclusion part of that article says it all 🙂 … It is quite a risky affair for sure. People do come safe but you never know when is the bad day and taking unnecessary risk is not my cup of tea, so I avoid traveling to mountains in mid July to August untill the rains go away and then I avoid high trans Himalayan remote region post first week of October or last week of September in any case.

  15. am planning a bike trip to leh on august 2015 solo . do u know any bike riders on that date to leh. if so pls let me know, so I could join them your email or mobile no pls. my mobile 09344479089

    I am planning to leave for leh today from manali and wish to come back by the 15th….is it possible considering the road conditions now?

  18. Ladakh Road Updates: road to pangong tso from leh is open. Leh to nubra is opened, leh to tso moriri is closed. Leh to manali is open, tso moriri to manali is open via tso kar. Srinagar to leh is open. Just confirmed in leh…

  19. Ladakh Road Updates: only road to pangong tso from leh is open. Leh to nubra is closed, leh to tso moriri is closed. Leh to manali is closed but tso moriri to manali is open via tso kar. Srinagar to leh is open. Just got connected in leh and got this news. It will take couple of days to get the roads restored.

  20. Varsha Arora on

    Hi Dheeraj Ji

    We are travelling to Leh via manali tommorrow August 7th. Please let me know if the roads and way from manali to leh is fine and with keylong night stay , when can we reach leh. Thanks

    • Varsha, Manali – Leh is still closed near Taglang La pass. Those doing Leh to Manali via Tso Moriri – Tso Kar are able to come to Manali but going towards Leh from Manali is not open. If you take the route from Tso Moriri – Tso Kar towards Leh then you might danger yourself for AMS being hit at Tso Moriri. In case you happen to do it, sleep at Tso Kar if at all required and then do Tso Kar – Tso Moriri – Chumathang – Leh next day or anyhow try to make it to Chumathang to avoid some kind of AMS

      • Ladakh Road Updates: only road to pangong tso from leh is open. Leh to nubra is closed, leh to tso moriri is closed. Leh to manali is closed but tso moriri to manali is open via tso kar. Srinagar to leh is open. Just got connected in leh and got this news. It will take couple of days to get the roads restored.

    Hi Dheeraj, What is the latest update on manali leh highway.? When is it likely to open?
    We are waiting in manali from last two days for the route to open.

    • Manali – Leh Highway is open now partially
      EDIT: just confirmed that manali leh is not fully open rather the friends reached manali/keylong through tso moriri. The road is blocked near taglang la where it will take few days for restoration on the way to leh. So if you coming from tso moriri or tso kar then road is open else closed

      • Sajal as per the reports the restoration will take few days 3-4 days as per locals from Tso Kar and Tso Moriri. Hence, can’t really bet on 8th Aug from now

    Hey, this Blog is very much helpful for so many of us here who r planning for this Epic Bike trip. no question about it, 5 stars!!!

    By the way, Me with 4 of my friends are planning for Manali-Leh-Manali Bike ride starting from 15th August (upto 22 Aug.).
    But the current weather updates are not encouraging enough. I read a news regarding heavy rains in Leh which has caused flash floods in some villages of Leh. Also I find from the weather forecast that there will be good amount of rainfall in the coming week.
    Considering these things, I would like to know present situation in the Leh – Manali highway or at-least if you can provide me a way to get these information i would be glad.

  24. Abhishek Saini on

    Hi Dheeraj, I loved the blog.
    I have some Qs for you.
    I am starting from Delhi in August for 15 days. I and a friend of mine are planning to take my car to Leh and then hire a taxi for local travel.
    1. I am an experienced driver but haven’t driven much in the mountains ( I think Maharashtra mountains won’t count. So, should I take a driver? If yes, from where Srinagar or Delhi itself?
    2. I want to take my i20 Diesel 1.4. I don’t think power will be a problem but ground clearance may be a big issue. What would you suggest?
    3. Can I search for fellow travellers on some forum you know?

    • Hi Abhishek

      1. If you have drive in hills, the basics remain the same and you need to follow them.
      2. i20 will struggle a lot in case of crossing water crossings on Manali – Leh Highway due to low ground clearance.
      3. Fello travellers can be found in DoW Travel Partners Calendar up there in the main menu

  25. Want to know the status of Leh – Jammu Highway, Heard that there were many incidences of land sliding on this way in the month of July. I am travelling from Manali from 1st Aug. Planned route is Manali- Sarchu- Leh- Kargil- Srinagar- Jammu. Any obstacle please update. Can we get SMS update during the journey.

    • Rakesh, Srinagar – Leh Highwau is open and lot of people traveling on it without much hassles. Intermittent stoppages are there and one must be ready for them in monsoons for sure at the very least.

  26. Sudharshan on

    Hi Dheeraj, I am driving down to leh in first week of aug with my family.
    How to get permit to travel on Manali Leh highway?? I had read in newspaper that for diesel vehicles to ply we need to pay Rs. 2500/-. Is it true??

  27. i have 18 days to travel from kalka and back to kalka.
    can i do both lahaul spiti kaza and leh nubra pang gong tso in this time ? will be on my bike

  28. Hi Dheeraj,

    planning to go Leh via manli-Leh highway in august 1st week..as of now my some friends are stuck in Leh due to landslide…generally how many days BRO Takes to clear the route??..i am not sure but it seems we will have to cancel our trip. 🙁

  29. Hi Dheeraj,m traveling tomorrow from manali to leh, I want to know the road status and weather condition from manali to leh, can you please update me on this?????

  30. Dear Sir,me n my friend r planning a trip from srinagar to leh and then from leh to manali and back from the same route buth within as much minimum time as possible.We r travelling frow 21 july on our own bike (yamaha fazer)
    Plz tell us the approximate time,difficulties of d road,Accessories to carry with us and conditions of d road.In detail plzzzzzzzzzzz.

    • It will take 4 days to reach Leh from Srinagar side and 3 days to come back from Leh from Manali side. This makes it 7 days. 1 Day is required in Leh for acclimatization. If You have about 10 days. 1 Day can be used as Day trip to Pangong Tso and other day can be used as day trip to Nubra Valley or just Khardung La pass.

      • Hi Dheeraj, You mentioned that it takes 4 DAYS to reach Leh from Srinagar side? Is this because of rains? As I understand, one can reach Leh in 2 days with 1 night stay at Kargil or Drass. Could you please confirm. I am travelling on Srinagar – Leh on 12th Aug and coming back from Leh through manali route.

        Also, can you share some details on current weather & road conditions on both these routes?

        • Oh ok 🙂

          We wanted to book a vehicle (innova) for our journey starting from Srinagar to Leh and then Leh to Manali. Is it possible to book beforehand or should we book after reaching Srinagar?

          If we book from Srinagar, will they allow that vehicle to roam around in leh and take it to Manali?

        • For the leh – ladakh taxi union rate list 2015 – 16 including the contacts of some reliable taxi drivers within Leh – Ladakh, check the link here. You can get about 10-12% of discount by directly getting in touch with drivers and of course, talking in person rather on phone always help in bargaining more.

        • No Srinagar taxi will not be allowed for sightseein in Leh or Ladakh. You have to call up a Ladakh taxi only. You can ask the local ladakhi drivers mentioned in the list in the link I shared to pick you up from Srinagar.

  31. Dear dheeraj, can you please tell the current status of manali – leh highway ? It’s open or closed????

  32. Dear Dheeraj,

    Firstly, thank you for all the updates!! Please help me with your inputs on our trip starting 13th july. Below is our plan for the road trip:

    Day # Source Destination
    13th Chandigarh ->Amritsar +Wagah
    14th Amritsar ->Patnitop
    15th Patnitop ->Sonamarg
    16th Sonamarg ->Kargil
    17th Kargil ->Leh
    18th Leh Khardungla pass
    19th Leh ->pangong
    20th pangong ->leh
    21st River rafting at leh
    22nd Leh ->Sarchu
    23rd Sarchu -> Manali
    24th Manali ->Chandigarh

    We are group of 7 (4 guys , 3 girls). We are travelling in 3 bikes(pulsar 180, karizma, duke 200) and innova.

    I want our travel between Leh and Manali to be 3 days long. However cut it short to 2 days as no suitable accomodation is found before Sarchu for night stay. PLease suggest any changes in the itenary and also stay options between Leh and Manali.

    THanks in advance!!

    Regards,
    Vachan

    • Vachan, I will suggest that you use 21st day for a two day trip to Nubra Valley over Khardung La pass on 18th and 19th, do Pangong Tso on 20th and 21st. Nubra should be done as it has very beautiful views.

      • Dear Dheeraj,

        I will consider your inputs and make changes accordingly. PLease help me with your inputs on the leh-manali strech:

  33. Sarjeet Singh on

    Dear Dheeraj Ji Is the Srinagar-Leh-Manali highway road will be safe for drive after 26 July 2015 to 15 August 2015 Please Suggest Best Advice. I will go by own car Innova or Scorpio. Can I go at that time.

    • Rains causes hassles from Srinagar to Zojila Pass. Once you cross Zojila Pass to around Drass, you enter rain shadow region where there isn’t much of an issue.

  34. Sarjeet Singh on

    Dear Dheeraj Ji I want to know that is there any restriction to go for Manali-Leh highway. My friend went on 18 June 2015 and said that there is four to five day’s waiting for Permit to go for Manali-Leh highway is that true Please Suggest. If I will from Srinagar-Leh highway there also will be waiting for permit waiting.
