Manali Leh Highway Status 2014

365

It is March and all the adventure junkies or Ladakh lovers know what it means – BRO starts the snow clearance operation over 474 KM long Manali – Leh Highway for the season 2014 – 15. This time snow stock is again huge, thanks to snow in last couple of months, with almost up to 30 feet of snow walls up there, even 60 feet 😯 😯 , much more than last few years. We need to see when the roads to Leh – Ladakh will open in 2014 so that we, adventure lovers will start our annual adventure pilgrimage to the heaven. BRO has started the snow clearance last day after offering prayers at Gulaba, about 23 KMs from Manali.

New Manali – Leh Highway status thread for year 2015-16 has been started and you can find updates for year 2015 at the link: Manali Leh Highway Status 2015 – 2016

BRO plans or claims to open the Manali – Leh Highway by 30th April 2014 if weather condtions hold up. However, like previous years, only weather gods will have the last say in it. I expect no less than mid of May and even when the highway gets open it needs at least couple of weeks to settle or get stabilized from initial snow sliding that happens due to quick melting of snow.

As per the earlier years, I will be starting this sticky post for Manali Leh Highway Status 2014 which so many adventure lovers await every year. However, instead of updating the main article here at DoW Blog, I will keep the updated progress in the DoW Community thread for the same for better tracking of updates. A Forum Topic always helps in better updates tracking as well as collation in organized manner. Hence, for all updates on Manali – Leh Highway after this initial post please stay tuned to the topic in DoW Community: Manali – Leh Highway Status 2014 | DoW Community Thread

Manali Leh Highway Status 2014
Manali Leh Highway Status 2014

Once the Manali Leh road opens, I may not be that active in frequently updating the status because these roads close and open on frequent basis. It is barely impossible for a single tiny soul like me to update this information on daily basis once the road gets open, so please request you to excuse me on that front and accept my apologies :)… However, if there is some major blockade of 3 – 4 days, I will try to surely update such information about Manali Leh Highway status. That is another reason to keep updated to DoW Community Thread for the same.

I hope as per the last year, this year as well this article thread will be useful in planning your journey on Manali – Leh Highway and further to Leh – Ladakh.

UPDATE from 9th June 2014
The Rohtang Pass Permit for Manali to Leh, Keylong (Lahaul) and Kaza (Spiti) is now being issued at an official camp setup at Gulaba ahead of Kothi, from green tax barrier at Chauri-Bihal and Shuru, SDM Office Manali, Tourist information center Manali and in the office of HPTDC. This year the congestion charges of Rs. 50/- per vehicle has to be paid which includes both Motor Bike and Cars… The traffic is allowed from 4 AM in the morning to 11 PM at night, after which traffic will not be allowed. Hence, it is suggested to start at 3 AM from Manali to avoid long traffic jams, especially in June, to Rohtang Pass. For Manali to Rohtang Pass, only 400 tourists vehicles/taxis (HP Registered) are allowed in the batches per day beyond Gulaba to snow point of Marhi or Rohtang Pass.

Manali Leh Highway Status = CLOSED | Update Date: 4th March, 2014

MANALI, 4th March 2014: Cutting through the 10 to 30 feet thick sheet of hard snow, Border Roads Organization (BRO) on Monday started its snow clearing operation on the daunting Manali-Leh highway after offering prayers for the safety of its jawans at Gulaba, 23km from here.

Project Deepak of 38 Border Road Task Force (BRTF) stationed in Manali has responsibility to maintain the 222km Manali-Sarchu road, which, according to officials, has received more snow than previous few years. The strategically important highway, which further meets with Ladakh, is used by the Indian Army to ferry logistics and arms to border areas. This year BRO has set its target to re-open the highway by April 30.

“Rohtang and Baralacha passes have experienced very heavy snowfall. If weather permits, we shall open the highway by the end of April,” BRO commander Colonel Yogesh Nair said. He said the highway has witnessed many avalanches and thickness of snow could be more than 60 feet at some places.

Searching for the road below thick sheet of snow is similar to searching for needle in haystack. An inch of unnecessary cutting in snow may result in fatal consequences on the hilly terrain. Dozens of jawans are clearing snow simultaneously from Satingri towards Baralacha pass, Sissu to Rohtang pass, Udaipur to Kilaar and Gulaba to Rohtang pass. Each group of jawans has four dozers and two snow cutters.

The 474km-long Manali-Leh highway gets blocked after heavy winter snow in November and December and is thrown open for vehicular traffic only after April. BRO jawans work in freezing cold and face blizzards to reopen the highway every year. Opening of the highway will also provide relief to thousands of residents of Lahaul valley who have been locked in snow since December.

  1. Hi,

We are planning to go to Leh via Manali – Leh highway around 15th of Nov. How would be the roads? Please share your experience.

    Hi Dheeraj ,
How is the snowfall condition till now this year ? Not hearing much snowfall and western disturbances as it happened so much last year.

    • Snowfall is quite decent as per local reports Nilavra especially in Lahaul & Spiti. Also in Ladakh it has been decent snowfall. This year it snowed late but in abundance. May be less in comparison to last year though.

        Hi Dheeraj ,
It is March now. Any update from BRO on road clear work on Manali to Leh highway ?

        • No updates, as everything is buried under snow for last two days. Roads are blocked even the Jammu – Srinagar Highway is blocked. Hence, once the weather clears up then only the snow clearance operations will begin on Manali – Leh Highway and Srinagar – Leh Highway

  3. Hello Dheeraj,

Me and my friend George had successfully completed Manali-Leh road trip June 2014. Thank you for all your help and support.

Our next plan is either Tawang or Chadar trek during Dec 2015. Which will be the best place to visit during December? Kindly provide links and other details for the trip.

    Best Wishes,
    Sachin.

    • Sachin, good to know that. Well Chadar trek starts in Jan end types when the river freeze and this year it has been called off due to safety reasons as there is a possible lake burst that might occur due to accumulation of water because of a landslide. Regarding Tawang, please post a query in DoW Community – Itinerary Advice section and I am sure someone shall be able to help you out. There are few Travel Tales too in Travel tales section of the DoW Community on Arunachal Pradesh, check them too.

    Hi Dheeraj ,
How is the snowfall this year in lahul, spiti, zanskar area ? I guess it is quite less compared to last year. I saw in Kargil official website that Kargil to Zanskar road is still open !!!! Is that correct ?

      • Nilavra, Tsering a dear friend from Spiti was in Delhi last week and I met him. He told me that the things are quite weird this year. It did not started snowing earlier as in expected month but then suddenly snowed in abundance. Things look similar in coming days as per him.

          Dheeraj,
Where from in New Delhi we get the bus for Manali. I hope it is overnight journey. Do you have any private bus operator details or we should go by HPTDC buses. Where from we get HPTDC buses ? Are the buses available at ease ?

        • Hi Nilavra,

HRTC ones leaves from ISBT while HPTDC buses leaves from Himachal Bhawan. Best is HPTDC or HRTC, dont rely on any other.

          Regards
          Dheeraj

          Dheeraj ,
Just a quick info needed. The share taxi from Manali to Leh starts running immediately after the road is thrown open by BRO ? Does it run only when the road stabilizes ?

        • Nilavra, the taxis on Manali – Leh road starts plying immediately as soon as road is thrown open officially by BRO. However, some taxis even ply one it and take risks even when road is open but not officially declared open due to safety reasons. Better avoid such cases.

    • Nilavra, I doubt that Penzi La is still open and regarding snowfall in Lahaul and Spiti, I suggested you what I had a word with tsering and it seems more or less on high side so far.

      • Nilavra Ghosh on

        Hi Dheeraj ,
Which bus stand in Chandigarh I get the bus for manali in the morning to reach there in the evening ? I know there are few bus stands in Chandigarh so I really need to know which bus stand I should go to catch the bus. Do you know when does the bus start in the morning ? Also if I would like to have a shared taxi where from they would be available ? Can I get shared cab just beside the railway station in Chandigarh ? if not then where the taxis would be available ?

        • Hi Nilavra,

Don’t have much idea from where the bus leaves from Chandigarh. Most of the buses leaves in evening only. You can check with HRTC Facebook page for standard buses to Manali from Chandigarh. It will be difficult to get the shared taxi or cab for Manali from Chandigarh but personal you should be able to get.

          Regards
          Dheeraj

if i visit leh with Air
is it possible in feb-march ? can i enjoy all sightseeing in Leh in sightseeing ??? i want to enjoy snow fall and snow .

      • Nilavra Ghosh on

        Hi Dheeraj ,
Planning for Manali-Leh in June 2015. I am single person. Can I get shared taxi from Manali ? How much does it cost per person and how many people it takes in a cab ? When does it leave from Manali as I heard it leaves at 2:00 AM or 3:00 AM. Is there any shared taxi running from Manali which reaches Leh in 2 days with a night stay at Keylong.

        • Hello Nilavra,

A happy new year to you and your family !!

Best is to find some travel partners for yourself online or up there once you reach Manali. Then take a shared cab to Leh so that you enjoy as tourist not as a passenger. Passenger taxis will not stop for you to take pics and all. The charges will be around 2000-2500 per seat depending upon number of people and days of travel.

The ones that leave late night are passenger taxis and they make you reach by same day. If HPTDC tourist bus from Manali to Leh starts running during that time, then that is the best option but they in general only start the bus service when road condition stabilize.

          Regards
          Dheeraj Sharma

        • Nilavra Ghosh on

          Hi Dheeraj,
Thanks for the info. Will try to hire a private cab based on your suggestion depending on my budget. Still I want to know whether the shared passenger taxis are easily available at Manali taxi stand just after the road opens ? Do I need to get any permit issued from manali SDM office or the driver of the taxi will arrange for that ?

        • Hello Nilavra,

In case you are using local taxi, you will not need any permits. Yes, those taxis will be available.

          Regards
          Dheeraj

  5. shruthiraj on

Hi me and my hubby r coming to shimla and manali on December 21st to 25 th will I see snow and snow fall during this time

    • shruthiraj, there is snow towards snow points of Rohtang Pass at Marhi as of now, so by that time snow shall be available at lower snow points too. But, for Shimla and around it depends if it snows during that time or not.

  6. Pravin nahata on

My son’s school is taking them to kullu-Manali from 28 Dec to 4th jan. From Delhi by bus.
How will be the weather & road conditions. Is it safe to also travel to rooting pass in buses that time

    • Pravin, they will not be taking them to Rohtang Pass as it is officially closed. Weather will be quite cold and there should be chances of snowfall too. They may be taking children to snow points well before Rohtang Pass that time of the year.

    • Plying on Manali to Kaza road becomes risky post mid of October with each passing day, the risk gets higher and higher. It eventually close by mid of November when people only dare to cross the Kunzum Pass to Rohtang Pass road in dire circumstances only. I do not recommend plying on Manali to Kaza road anytime after mid of October unless you are one of those who are ready to risk the lives in the name of adventure.

    • Sangeeta, BRO has suggested to open the Rohtang Pass till December so it will be open officially but all depends upon the weather conditions. If weather turns futile then nothing can be done and Rohtang Pass will close. However, you will find plenty of snow stock on the way to Rohtang Pass any day in winters.

  7. I planned leh via manali from date 8th November . Please i tell me this date roads are open

  8. Anand soni on

Thnks dheeraj..n plz tel me dt expect rohtang pass al places are open na in December month.. Or it be good to visit in december

    • Anand, Rohtang Pass does not open before June after it is closed in November. If snow is your priority then you will find plenty of it on the route to Rohtang Pass upto which ever snow point is allowed for tourists. However,if you want to visit Rohtang Pass then you have to make a trip after May – June only

    • No Anand, by that time Rohtang Pass will be closed but you can travel to snow points of Marhi or Gulaba during that time where you can find plenty of snow.

I plan to have a round trip in May 2015 from Delhi to leh & back to Delhi…we are 6 adults & 1 child. Can u suggests if Innvova will be OK & the condition of the highway.

    • Innova should be OK to travel however May is not the time when Manali – Leh Highway will be open. Even Srinagar – Leh might open only post mid of May. Hence, if you want to do the Ladakh circuit then try to plan the trip from mid of June to September types.

Total round trip we planned is of 8 days starting from Manali upto returning back to Manali. We are 4 freinds and planning to rent 3 bikes. 13. Respected sir, we guys are planning laddakh via manali, rohtang pass.journey starts from 2 october.plz tell me the condition of road via rohtangpass .we have one bike and one jeep (thar).plzzz reply fast

  14. Dheeraj….thanx for all the info.Drove my Indica Vista from Leh to Chandigarh via Manali from 21 to 25 Sep 2014. Road conditions were not too bad. Of course some stretches needed extra caution to ensure parts on the undercarriage did not get damaged. The changes in topography as we drove along were fantastic indeed. Planning to repeat the journey in June / July next year !!!

    • Venky, so good to know that !! By this time the road conditions are best in shape. If possible, try and share your Himalayan experience with us at DoW – Himalayan Travel Community as Photo Tale or Travel Tale Or your reviews of the hotels/guest houses where you stayed or dhabhas/restaurants you ate food on your trip… All this might help others planning the similar trip too 🙂 🙂
