Manali – Leh Highway Status 2011 | Snowfall disrupts snow clearance

For the past few days, the inclement weather conditions disrupted life in many parts of Himalayas including Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir. Higher regions of Himachal Pradesh including Manali region, Solang Valley, Rohtang Pass, Pangi Valley, Spiti Valley, Kinnaur Valley, Chamba, Sach Pass etc received heavy amount of snowfall in the month of April 2011. Jammu and Srinagar was not far behind in getting lashed rains in the lower parts and higher hills received quite amount of snow.

While the tourists, taxi operators and hoteliers are happy with the heavy tourist influx to see the white carpet in all parts of Himalayas, the apple orcharders are also partying in the hopes of great apple crop. However, this white blanket of snow does disrupts life in these regions too. The Jammu – Srinagar Highway had to be closed as well few days back owing to slippery conditions and snow on the roads.

The Manali – Leh Highway, also suffered from the disruption of snow clearance operations carried out by BRO. So far BRO has reached Beas Nalla, 32 KMs further away from Manali towards Rohtang Pass but further progress was disrupted. The distance between Manali and Rohtang Pass is about 51 KMs, so if weather improves in next couple of days we can expect the snow clearance operations to resume soon 🙂

  1. Sir, I am planning to visit this week, some one pls advise present conditions, I wish to have bike ride at rothang pass, pls advise does it possible now? N is this best time to enjoy?

  2. Hi

I am planning for a 3/4day trip to Himachal on 27th Dec, which hill station do you think is the best option where my wife can see snow and snowfall.

    • Hi Mr. Singh,

In Himachal, for snow best bet will be Manali but do bookings in advance as that is the costliest and busiest week of the whole year.

It is always hard to predict snowfall as it depends on the luck and the weather on the day you plan to visit :)… Well, yes at that time you will be able to see ample of snow stock around the snow points of Gulaba/Marhi or Solang Valley. So, if snow is the priority then there are no issues but for snowfall best bet is that, you keep the plan flexible and keep a check on weather updates on the day you plan to visit. The links here: Rohtang Pass, Kothi and Manali regions respectively can be helpful for you in tracking the weather updates of Manali and around. If it says raining in Manali, or rains/snow at Kothi or snows at Rohtang Pass then expect snowfall at nearby snow points of Solang and Marhi/Gulaba etc.

I hope this helps. Please let me know incase you have more doubts or queries.

If interested in more details on Manali including sightseeing places, accommodation options, food joints, etc you can go through the Manali travel guide available at the link here.

hi dheeraj, can you tell me that still work is stopped or it is resumed???? and if it is resumed then please tell current status. thnx

  5. Manali – Leh Highway Status Update: 17th April, 2011

On South side of Rohtang pass road till Marhi from Manali has been cleared by BRO but inclement weather had put an halt to the progress. However, vehicles are allowed only upto Gulaba for the time being. Work is in progress towards Rani Nalla but at Rani Nala there is huge amount of snow that is present this year. It is expected that progress will be go down slow once BRO reaches that part of the stretch near Rani Nalla.

On the North side of Rohtang pass the strecth from Sissu – Keylong – Darcha has been cleared and vehicles are doing it on daily basis. Currently, work is in progress on Sissu – Khoksar stretch.

This year snow stock is huge and experts predict opening of Manali – Leh highway could be delayed due to huge amount of snow present at the passes. Last two days even it has snowed in the higher hills of Himalayas including all the passes.
