Due to inclement weather and heavy snowfall predictions, BRO has decided to close the 474 KM long Manali – Leh Highway from November 1 (today) onwards. Now, all the adventure lovers have to wait for about 6-7 Months before Manali – Leh Highway is opened next year around June 2012. This year to quite a surprise BRO decided to keep Manali – Leh Highway open till the end of November (as mentioned in the link here) but then GREF issued a warning (as mentioned in the link here) to motorists/tourists not to venture on Manali – Leh Highway after October as they are expecting heavy snowfall. Finally, they have decided to officially close the highway with same risks in mind and for the safety of people or tourists traveling on it.

MANALI, November 2011: Due to the possibility of heavy snowfall, the Manali-Leh highway has been officially closed to traffic from November 1 till the onset of summer next year. Administration of Lahaul-Spiti has hastened the stocking of essential commodities for emergency use during winters.
Border Road Organization (BRO) that looks after the maintenance work of Manali-Leh highway, had earlier decided to keep the highway open till November 30.
BRO commander Yogesh Nair said snow may block the highway at any time “Copies of the written decision have been forwarded to Kullu and Lahaul-Spiti administration. Maintenance of the highway shall go on in winters, and we shall get the stretch cleaned in case of mild snow.”
With the closure of the highway, the tribal district of Lahaul-Spiti is cut off from the country. Residents have stored groceries, fodder and readied their woolens for the six-month harsh winter season. About 20,000 quintal firewood has been stored in the district wood depots.
Lahaul-Spiti deputy commissioner Rajeev Shankar said, “95% of the stock including ration, kerosene, fuel and other essential commodities have been stored, and the remaining would arrive soon. Till safe, the emergency vehicles and public buses of Himachal roadways transport corporation would be plying the highway.”
