The Journey so far…

Day 4 | Losar Village and Around

7th May 2013: I had reached Losar last day and it was time to explore it a bit after a night’s rest. I woke up in the morning and started my stroll in the village. First attraction point was to get towards the frozen nalla and click some pictures. After that a stroll back along the frozen stream of water to the Nomad’s Cottage, where I was staying with the friend Sahil who runs it despite staying away from it but still being connected all season 😀 …, Must be some skills ;)… Well, the special morning walk surrounded with snow all around was something to remember for a long time. I came back, had my breakfast and decided to go towards snow point towards Kunzum Pass to enjoy snow but also get status of road opening.

Day 4 | Losar – Takcha – Kunzum Pass Snow Point

Somehow I managed to borrow a bike from a local chap Kunga as he helped me reach towards Kunzum Pass as far as possible to see the snow and play around. I wrapped myself, especially the head to the core, so that cold does not hit. We were short on fuel but managed to reach to a safe point and decided to park the bike so that we had enough left to reach back Losar. Walking that much would have been surely a nightmare for me with un-acclimatized body at such an altitude. We hiked about 2 KMs from there to see the snow and where the road was blocked further to Kunzum Pass but the main point was far ahead, about 2 KMs more. I was not carrying the water too, so decided against it. Enjoy some pictures below of this leg:

Day 4 | Kunzum Pass Snow Point – Takcha – Losar

We had parked the bike near Takcha, popularly known as Yak Grazing Grounds. From the snow point we hiked back to Takcha and started the ride back to Losar hoping we are not into surprise of empty fuel tank 😀 … I traveled without the helmet and the cold wind was hitting the head like anything despite so many layers on it. And then the hiking at around 4300 Mtrs also did not helped and I was hit with headache. That was the mild symptom of AMS, I knew. The remaining day went in the bed despite I could see snowfall from the window, but I did not have the energy to move out. I was not able to eat properly too but forced myself to have at least some Dal & Rice with one chapati. The worst thing you do with AMS, is that you don’t eat. So, understand your body and force itself to eat and get some energy to let your body battle against AMS. Anyways, the night somehow passed by and next morning I decided to leave for Kaza alone. sir..we wehave a plan to cover kaza to loser on 23 rd may.so can we expect to see this type of snow covered road on that time at loser.i have a 3 year old daughter with me.will she feel any dificulty and what precautions can be taken?

    • Sandip, are you planning to travel from kaza to Manali? If yes, the road will not be open but you can travel to Losar. Regarding the kid, it all depends upon how much you are acclimatized. Unless it is absolutely necessary, I will not suggest planning a trip to go beyond Kaza.

  2. Sir you said its may second week so can you visit losar and kunzum pass at that time as you said manali to spiti route opens only after mid June.

    • Manoj, these are two different things and lot of people get confused with it. Kunzum Pass opens around mid May from Kaza side, if you travel to Spiti from Shimla – Kinnaur side. The main problem on the route of Manali to Kaza is before Kunzum Pass where 20+ feet of snow glaciers needs to be cut to make the road. All the time is taken there to cut the road, precisely between Gramphu to Battal to Kunzum Pass. So, if you just want to visit Kunzum Pass, you can do so in May too but the road from Manali to Kaza opens in mid June.
