What are the essential things to pack for a trip?
Since luggage is most common among any traveler, it would be great always to have a list of things to carry on a trip, in store for yourself. It would certainly be convenient when the plans are abrupt and come out of nowhere, leaving no time for packing the luggage.
I have tried to compile a comprehensive list of thing to carry while I go on a trip and feel could be helpful for each one of us traveling to various places.
Basic Travel Kit to Carry on Trips
There are certain items that you carry on any kind of trip. I call such things are basic travel kit which every kind of traveler must carry on their trips. Let us look at these basic travel kit items.
- Itinerary Printout (at least 2)
- Travel Guide / Map Print Out (at least 2)
- At least two Copies of PhotoIDs for all members
- Mobile
- Mobile Charger
- Pen and a small Diary
- Bag locks (2 or more)
- Backpack or Carry bag
- Extra spectacles with cover
- Spectacles cover
- Torchlight or Flashlight
- Small Scissor
- Watch
- Swiss Knife. I have a Victorinox Huntsman Red Swiss Army Knife which I have been using since 6-7 years. It has helped in many situations in mountains and still work as new. One of the best products I have bought in life.
- Power bank – Extremely useful in case short on electricity, which will be the case mostl
- Hand Sanitizer (Dettol, Lifebuoy) – Recommended
- Sunglasses – Recommended
- Multi-Plug – Recommended for remote areas
- Small water bottle, say 500 ml
- Match Boxes or Flint or Cigarette Lighter
- Couple of candles
- Plastic Bags / Plastic Zip Lock Bags

- Novels or two
- Pens, pencils, colors, crayons, chocolates, toffees for distribution among local children
- DC to AC Inverter. It is an extremely useful item often neglected. It helps you keep the batteries of your phone charged, camera batteries charged and even laptop or iPhone or iPad charged too. I own a Targus 200W Power Inverter with USB Fast Charging Port and it has proven its worth in day to day life as well not just trips to the Himalayas.

Eateries
No trip is complete without carrying the things to eat. Certainly, most of the time food is available on any destination we travel. However, at some places of Spiti or Ladakh or when camping in the remote regions of the Himalayas, food can be hard to find. It is especially true when you are on dietary restrictions.
Hence, it is always good to carry basic eateries on your trips.
- Chocolates, toffees, chips, chewing gums, mouth freshener, dry fruits etc.
- Energy Bars or Protein Bars for quick snacks.
- Any restrictive diet items
- Pre-cooked food if needed
Camera Kit
If you are a photographer or an enthusiast like me, you should be prepared for a lack of electricity when traveling to the Himalayas. Hence, go prepared with your entire camera kit to take those amazing shots that become lifetime memories. Also, do not forget to carry things for helping you charge your camera gear.
Here are some things to carry from a photographer’s standpoint on any trip.

Mountains Must-Haves Things to Carry
When in the mountains, always protect yourself from the sun, cold and dryness. Hence, what type of clothing you carry depending upon your Himalayan travel destination becomes very important. Let us look at some of the must-have things to carry on a mountain trip.

- Hats / Caps
- Heavy Woolen Clothing including woolen socks (Severe Cold / Snow). I have been using my fleece zipper Quechua Forclaz 50 for last 5-6 years and much pleased by them always because they act as a really warm base layer below any jacket or windcheater.

Trekking Must-Haves Things to Carry
When you go for long treks in the Himalayas or you go for short hikes on your trips, you must carry certain things. It is important and helpful to get the support of some stick that helps you walk uphill to decrease the pressure on knees. And as the weather can change in the Himalayas, it is important to carry rain or snow gear always with you. As you are in the mountains, sun protection is also necessary. And as you need walking or running shoes, you should carry trekking shoes to protect cuts and twists.
Let us look at some of the most important things you must carry when going on treks in the Himalayas or anywhere.
- Mountains Must Haves

- Rain / Snow Protection Gear like Rain Coat / Rain Suit

- Trekking Shoes. If you are looking for a good trekking/hiking waterproof and a bit warm shoes, you will not go wrong with Forclaz 500 Hiking Shoes. Though I have used them for about 7 years, they never proved me wrong. I have moved to North Face Versa Thermoball but then you don’t need them because Forclaz 500 is one good pair of shoes any day.

Beach Must-Haves Things to Carry
When you travel on a beach, you must protect yourself from the sun rays causing sunburn. If you are traveling with a kid, it becomes a must to protect his soft skin. Then you need to tackle sand. Hence, you will need to protect your clothes and shoes from getting filled with sand.
Given below is a list of things to carry when you travel on a beach. These are some of the must-haves in opinion to save you from the scorching sun and avoiding bad sunburn.
- Hats / Caps
- Sunscreen lotion (SPF 50 or greater) or Sunblock
- 2-3 Extra Shorts,
- An extra slipper and extra towel for back pack
- Thin single bed sheet – if not interested in beach shack / bed always
- Lip Guard with sunscreen
- Long-sleeved over shirt and a thin pair of pants as night gets a bit cold at beaches
Medicine or First-aid Box to Carry on Trips
When you are traveling to remote places like Ladakh or Spiti Valley, the medical help could be far away. You must always carry a basic medical kit on any trip you undertake. Even if you do not get to use it, chances are you may end up helping someone else in need. It happens all the time with me.
Let us look at some of the medicine you should carry on your trip to the Himalayas in your first-aid kit.

- ORS or ORS-L Tetra Packs at least 5 in number
- Pain Relief Spray
- Pain Relief Cream or Gel
- Betadine – Antiseptic cream
- Savlon or Dettol – Antiseptic solution
- Combiflaim or Flexon – Pain Killers
- Crocin or Paracetamol – Mild Fever
- Avomine – Relief from Dizziness, Motion Sickness and Vomiting
- Digene – Relief from Flatulence, Indigestion, acidity (mild)
- Zinetac 150mg – Acidity or gastric problems (only if severe)
- Eno Sachets – Quick Gastric Relief
- Entroquinol – Relief from Loose motion (mild)
- Metrogyl – Relief from Loose motion (high)
- D-Cold Total or Vicks Action 500 for cold
- Pudin Hara for stomachache
- Crepe Bandage – 2 (for fractures)

I will suggest to carry cash as ATMs are present but not much reliable and you find long queues at times. So, always good to carry majority of money in cash. The overnight trips to Pangong Tso and Nubra Valley will cost about 20K for you. Then hotels you can keep about 1000-1200 per day for food and stay per person.

Well, not really required bu sunglasses are always helpful in bright sunny conditions too. But, not mandatory. That will be in the day time but the night time temperatures can touch sub zero especially at Manali – Leh Highway and high altitude lakes from 0-5 deg C

Himanshu, Terrano will do fine. Since, you are traveling from Shimla – Kinnaur route, I feel there should not be any issue with it and most of the road conditions are fine up to Kaza for a car like Terrano.

Nehal, as suggested in the article, it is comprehensive list of things to carry in mountains. Do carry basic medicine for the kids and infant and carry the food for infant if possible. Milk will be available every where. Use boiled water for the infant as when we travelled with our kid, water was the main source of him being sick mostly. So, we started giving him only boiled water cooled down to drink it.

Well, take enough clothes for the infant/toddler and keep the protected from cold. Rest there should not be much of any issue especially the breathing problem because these places are not that high altitude placed and does have vegetation around.

Yogesh, how are you planning to reach there? Are you flying in? If yes, you need two days of complete rest in Leh. Then make two day trip to Nubra and one day trip to Pangong Tso

Abhay, in just 4 days in hand you can take first two days rest in Leh for acclimatization and Leh local on th second day. Then in remaining two days you can make a day trip to Khardung La and day trip to Pangong Tso. Since, you are going in October, the snowfall happens. Check the weather before going to Pangong Tso as in case it snows, the Chang La pass may cloose and you may miss the flight.

The plan is travel from kashmir area and move to leh by road. then down to Manali till delhi.
we are planning to rent a royal einfield from Srinagar to Leh. can i rent the bike at srinagar and drop it at Leh?
Currently, situation is not that good to travel from Srinagar side and recommended to not make any plans through that route. You dont want to be stuck in a curfew. Better either go from Manali side or book direct flight to Leh from Delhi and come back Manali route.

but i bought the ticket to Srinagar from Delhi. i will fly to srinagar on 15th Sept. i did some research, some said its ok to travel from srinagar to kargil and to leh in sept.
we haven’t book anything in srinagar, kargil, leh or manali. is it possible to buy the bus ticket on the spot in srinagar, leh and manali. i will plan bus from manali to delhi. or take train to delhi. but i checked no direct train to delhi from manali.

yeeenn, there is a curfew going on/off in Kashmir and situation is not that good up there. It is not recommended to travel from Srinagar side at present at least. Things might change in one month but you should keep a tab on news of curfew situation in Kashmir.

1. Since these ride dates falls before 15 august, so any idea of what kind situation would be there?
2. I am confused with shoes/boots I need to carry. I don’t have budget for professional riding boots such as cramster etc. Please suggest alternatives.
3. Can I use desi gumboots in case of water streams, since I ll be going in august, so I can expect lot of streams(correct me if m wrong. 🙂 )
1. Should be fine in general.
2. You can buy shoes/boots from army market which will do good job though may not last long for years. Or else you can get gum boots and tie them up on luggage and use them when crossing water crossing or slush stretched isntead of normal sport shoes you may have

Umakant, rains does not matter once you cross Kargil and reaches Ladakh and same is applicable up to Manali. However, before that there shall surely be rains for which you should have some buffer days in hand.

Tso Moriri needs an extra day but rafting you can do any day when you have time for 4-5 Hrs after reaching back Leh from Nubra or Pangong Tos

I will suggest that instead of renting these things you should buy them and if not needed in future better donate them in the villages of remote Himalayas only because the rent of such equipments for 3 weeks will be almost equivalent to the buying prices of the product. Since, you will come to Delhi, you can visit Decathlon store in Noida or Gurgaon to get all these stuff. You will get your sizes too

CJ, I thought we get the good quality stuff only at Decathlon store at reasonable rates because I never came across a shop selling good quality stuff at such rates in last 7-8 years of my travel experience at least around Delhi.
But anyways, if you are looking forward to cheap stuff then when you visit Delhi, you can go to Gopinath Bazar in Army Cantonment area OR Sadar Bazar in Army Cantonment area where you will get this stuff too at lower price but quality will not be up to mark. However, I see one point since you have to use it only for few weeks, who cares 😉 😉

There are many shops in Leh main market offering camping and tent gear. Frankly speaking, I will suggest that you purchase the hiking shoes from places like Decathlon (Forclaz 500 Quechua) available near Chandigarh, Delhi/NCR area. Rest you can rent in Leh when you reach up there.

Yes Innova shall be fine. There is no need to buy the sleeping bag if you dont have it else if you have it then you can carry. The biggest challenge will be sleeping at Pangong Tso which can be sorted by making a day trip to Pangong tso or sleeping at Tangste 34 KMs before Pangong tso which have gues houses with heater. If you have warm boots or trekking boots then better carry them.

Hi Tripta, it will surely be cold at places like PAngong tSo and high mountain passes like Khardung La, Chang La, Zojila havign snow around them as you are making a early trip to Ladakh. You do not need any heating pads in case you are carrying sufficient number of heavy woolens. Pangong tso tents will not be up but Himalayan Wooden Cottages may be running by that time of the year.
What about Binoculars

So, you will just be able to reach Auli on 15th, 16th you will have it on your own. Just hike around and spend leisure time. Then next day you need to move back from Auli. There isn’t much else you can do with just 1 day in hand.

Well, alto will definitely have slow progress on those roads and at some sections you will starve for high ground clearance. Having said that many people drive small cars with low ground clearance to Spiti Valley every year. The section from Kaza to Manali is usually the show stopper but in your case it should be closed so you will be returning vi same route of Kinnaur Valley and Shimla. So, if you guys are good drivers and drive with caution, it should be manageable. You can follow the below plan:
Day 1 | Chandigarh – Rampur/Narkanda
Day 2 | Rampur/Narkanda – Kalpa
Day 3 | Kalpa – Nako – Tabo
Day 4 | Tabo – Dangkar – Pin Valley – Kaza
Day 5 | Kaza and around (Ki, kibber, gette, hikkim, komik, langza – Choose whatever you possibly can)
Day 6 | Kaza towards Kunzum Pass back to Kaza OR come back to Tabo for night stay

1. There are many hotels which will fall under your budget, right from Khushboo Resort to Manali Inn, so you should be OK with that kind of budget
2. Yes Rohtang Pass should be open by that time
3. For Chandrakhani Pass you need to trek, Rohtang is a tourist spot
4. No snowfall during that time unless you are the the Rohtang Pass top and weather gets bad.

Kunal which which road did you enquire. The roads will remain open till the time snowfall does not happen BUT the point is they are closed NOT SAFE TO TRAVEL. YOU MIGHT FREEZE TO DEATH traveling over Manali – Leh Highway now. Srinagar – Leh is OK to travel but point over there again is is it worth taking such a risk? You only might have the answer for it. Mostly locals travel on Srinagar – Leh road now and Manali – Leh is abandoned by even locals mostly by first week of October.

Kamna, when are you reaching Jammu? Will you be able to start on 25th itself. These are quite less number of days as it will take 3 days to reach Leh from Jammu and 3 days to come back. 1 day rest complete is required.
We will reach jammu on 26th by 2-3 p.m. From there we are planning to hire a vehicle and stay for a night a pahalgam or srinagar and start our journey fr ladakh from next day. Since we are all working we wont be able to extend this trip.
Well, I will suggest that you cancel Ladakh and focus just on Kashmir. There is no point traversing the same route twice for 6 long long days of 8-9 Hrs at least and then just rest for a day. You do not have sufficient days in hand for a Ladakh trip.

2. Dress up in layers, so that it helps you get rid quickly when it is warm and get on quickly when evening or overcast days get cold
3. Not at all, it will take 4 days to reach from Srinagar side and 3 days to come back from Manali side. So, 7 days are gone then and there without seeing anything in Ladakh
4. Leh will have ATM then Manali. Srinagar – Kargil also have ATMs.

1. If you can prepone it by a couple of weeks it will be good because you will be able to get shared passengers and tourists easily rather difficult towards the end. Leh – Manali bus of HPTDC which caters to tourist also stops by 14 September.
2. Yes, carry enough cash with you but once you in Leh there are of course ATMs. However, at least 5-6K should be kept for any contingency like power outage etc..
3. Yes, you will need woolens, one light jacket and one heavy jacket as cold starts to set in up there in high hills by mid of September. Nights are quite cold at the lakes.
What type of warm clothing do I require during first half of Sept for Ladakh? I Have thermals, woolen socks, sweater, warm caps, woolen neck wrap.
Also have 3-in-1 Jacket from Quechua. Will these be enough? (Can use sweaters with it to keep warm. 🙂 )
Should I purchase warm trousers?

Anand, you will be fine with what you have in your armoury 😉 … Most of the time 3in1 will suit your need, dress up in layers as only nights will be cold but do not expose naked body to breeze or cold wind even in day time, keep yourself warm and it will help a lot.
No need of any special shoes or warm trousers. At max. you can buy a Quechua Warm Inner which can be weared inside the normal denim or trouser, costs around 300-400 I guess. That will be more than sufficient.

While going from Manali to Leh, best that you halt at Keylong or Jispa and do next day stretch from Jispa to Leh. Then rest in Leh for a day, then do Nubra Valley and then Pangong Tso. After that go towards Srinagar with overnight halt at Kargil or Sonamarg.

I was wondering if its necessary to buy waterproof hiking boots or if sports shoes will suffice. Are there an cheaper options, apart from Forclaz, available (not really a fan of renting jackets/ shoes from Leh). I also wanted to check if a rucksack is absolutely essential or would a suitcase do (sorry I’m a complete newbie at this!).

Since you are traveling in September, even the sports shoes will suffice the need. Again rucksack is more of a convenience but not necessity, hence you can completely carry a suitcase too.

It will take 3 days to reach Leh from Chandigarh. Then 18th August you will reach Leh in that case assuming you are staying at Chandigarh on 15th only. 3 days will be needed to come back to Chandigarh, one day is rest required. So, 7 days out of 7 are consumed just running around from Chandigarh to Leh and back.

No, it will not be possible because one day you need to rest in Leh there you can cover Shanti stup. Nubra Valley and Pangong Tso day trips can be made of about 11-12 Hrs each day on 19,20 day.

14th: depart from kolkata by Rajdhani Express
15th: arrive at delhi at 10.25am, reach manali by car at night
16th: manali to sarchu, night stay at sarchu base camp
17th: Sarchu to Leh. stay at auspicious hotel
18th: Leh to Nubra Valley, stay at turtuk holiday camp
19th: Nubra valley to Leh
20th: leh to pangong Lake and back to Leh
21st: Leh to kargil stay at hotel siachen
22nd: kargil to srinagar stay at hotel shah abbas
23rd: flight from srinagar and back to kolkata
Sounak, Avoid sleeping at Sarchu or Pang at any cost while going to Leh from Manali because your body will not be acclimatized by the time you reach there. It is always better to stay either at Keylong/Jispa so that you minimize the chances for falling sick or hit by AMS while going to Leh from Manali. And, then next day carry on the rest of the journey to Leh without sleeping in between anywhere by leaving early in the morning say, by 4-5 AM types. I prefer staying at Jispa more because Keylong gives the feeling of a town while Jispa is more closer to nature having Bhaga river running just aside the Manali – Leh Highway at Jispa. If you are coming back via Manali – Leh, then it should be OK to stay at Sarchu as your body will be acclimatized by that time.

17th aug – From manali we will take a jeep/suv to losar village and will stay there. We need to take break as before this we will have to come delhi-chandigarh-manali.. and its a back to back journey.
18th aug- Will start for Chandratal lake. Reaching and halting there .(Want to try Topko Gangma from there if have time).
19th aug – have time
20th aug- have time.
21st aug – We need to take the train kalka mail from kalka… So manali to kalka we need to reach.. Means 21st moring we have to their in Manali.

Wreet, there is no trek, road is there all the way to Chandratal may be you talking about trekking towards Surajtal from Chandratal. I do not see any point of going to Losar anyways. You can camp at Batal itself or stay there in PWD rest house. There is no point going over trecherous route to Losar from Kunzum Pass – Batal and then coming back again the very next morning.

Weather will be fine and pleasant mostly. But do carry at least one heavy woolen pair along with heavy jacket as it can snow at high passes anytime of the year and it get extremely cold. So, for a backup do have heavy woolens too.

Archie, yeah, it is fine time to travel to Manali. Well, paragliding last I heard has been banned up there after a mishap where a person died in a crash. Rafting will be available.

Carry at least one pair of heavy woolens and one heavy and one light jacket to suit the needs. In case weather changes you will be running for heat in the absence of heavy jacket or heavy woolens. Otherwise it will be quite pleasant mostly with light jacket on.

Savneet, since you are traveling with car and do not have any trekking shoes with you, then you can carry normal sport shoes as well in July as weather is pleasant and since you are in car, then there is no reason to get your shoes wet in water crossings too.

We friends are planing to Visit Leh in last week of June ‘ 2015. I Just want to know that is this good time to travel Leh from weather prospective ? and one more thing, we will have 5 full day and 1 half day at leh, so can you plz suggest ‘not to miss’ places to visit ?

Day 4 | Leh Local Sightseeing + Acclimatization

— Overnight at Leh
Day 5 | Leh – Khardung La – Diskit – Hunder
— Head for Nubra Valley and stay overnight at Hunder / Diskit
— On the way enjoy a cup of soup at Highest Motorable Pass (as claimed) Khardung La
— Diskit has monasteries with tallest lord Buddha statue and Hunder has sand dunes and bacterian camel safari
Day 6 | Hunder / Diskit – Sumur – Panamik – Sumur – Khardung La – Leh
— Sumur has a famous monastery to check out and Panamik has hot water springs
— Overnight at Leh
Day 7 | Leh – Hemis Monastery – Pangong Tso Lake
— Cover either of Hemis, Thicksey and Shey on the go towards Pangong Tso
— Overnight at Pangong Tso (Spangmik or Lukung)
Day 8 | Pangong Tso Lake – Thicksey Monastery – Shey Palace – Leh
— Cover either of Hemis, Thicksey and Shey on return to Leh
— Overnight at Leh

We want to travel from srinagar – Manali Chandigarh around 17th august 2015, We have plan as below
Day 1 – sringar stay at boat house
DAy 2 – gulmarg stay at boat house
Day 3 – travel towards leh stay at kargil
day 4 – travel to leh – stay at leh
Day 5 – Local leh touring
Day 6 – travel to baralacha la – manali stay at Jips / Zingzing baar
Day 7 – travel to rohtang pass stay at manali
Day 8 – Travel to chandigardh.
We have 4 children along with 20 adult. Is it Okay to travel with children of age between 3- 6 years ?
Above 8 days tour plan is good or need any editing ? ? Please suggest
Dinesh, It depends on person to person to take the children of such age group because AMS do not matter with respect to age or sex or any physical health condition. It can happen to anyone of any age or sex or fitness I shall say :D… The issue with children is that they tend to exert the body considering it the same kind of place they belong to and this elevates the chances of getting struck with AMS. Secondly, they are not much expressive about their uneasy feelings, so it is parents who need to watch out and take care that the child is not suffering from uneasy feelings, headache or nausea and is behaving properly. With less than 3 year child, I think he/she will also be NOT able to convey the uneasiness she may feel. You have to be vigilant and if you notice any such feeling or he/she tells you about such a feeling then please do not ascend anywhere, either descend to lower altitude or stay at the same place to watch things overnight and if symptom increase then start descending immediately. Same is applicable for any adult as well. And yes, do keep the body adequately hydrated!!

I need a suggestion from you. My friends are travelling to hemkunt sahib by their bikes. Is it safe to travel on bike from delhi to hemkunt sahib on bikes ?
And what are the necesarry things they should carry along with them??
Yes, it is fine to travel on bike. You need to trek though fro remaining part of it. When are you traveling? List of things have been mentioned above. Now regarding bikes, I am not sure how much you are done rides before to hills. Do you need carry things for biking too?

So I’m going to leh(by flight from Delhi) next week and having read all forums and tips, I’m really scared about the AMS ( the sickness). Please tell me how can I take all measures to prevent any signs of AMS. Also, does Diamox help? If yes then how and when to take it?

Day 1 | Delhi – Leh (By Flight)
— Checkin at Hotel. Many hotels provide free pick and drop from Airport. Ask while you book them.
— Take ample of rest as well as water or anything that keep your body hydrated enough. DO NOT OVER HYDRATE. Take ORS Soluted water or ORS – L tetra packs from home.
— Do not over exert your body at any cost. Avoid too much up-down on stairs or avoid it in entirety, if possible.
— After 5-6 Hrs of rest you can visit Leh Palace, Local Leh market, Shankar Gompa .
— If you feel exerted go back to Hotel, have dinner at Hotel and take rest. Avoid any exertion. Else continue and,
— Follow the sunset by stroll at Changspa road and have a nice dinner on varied cuisines offered in-around Changspa road.
— Go back to hotel for overnight stay at Leh.
Day 2 | Leh Local Sightseeing + Acclimatization
— Hire a taxi from Leh taxi stand or Hotel whichever suits you.
— Bargain hard with taxi driver. Book that single taxi for entire trip after explaining the complete plan.
— Take his inputs if you feel reasonable and if required modify the plan accordingly but should suits you best.
— Ask him to be with you guys starting first day itself, if required and charged reasonable else do it at your own.
— Again DO NOT over exert and take little steps and slow walks only.

— Do not use stairs at any of these places just to see them as it will exert your body much more.
— Overnight at Leh
