Leh – Ladakh Taxi Rates 2017 – 18

114

The new season for traveling to Leh – Ladakh has arrived. In this article today, I will share Leh – Ladakh Taxi Rates 2017 – 18 which are published by leh taxi union every year in April. Well, to my surprise, this year Leh taxi union has decided not to hike the taxi rates except few hundred bucks for airport transfers. It is the second year in a row now when Leh taxi union has decided not to hike the rates. I expected around 8-10% at least but the news is a very pleasant surprise. You might know that few of year ago the taxi union has separated the rates on the basis of the model and make of the taxis. There are XUVs too available as taxi now, which falls in the category of Innova and Xylo… The taxi grouping along with price hikes for this year, which is same as last year, are as follow with an exception of Xylo moving to Category B:-

  • XUV, Innova and Aria (highest price tag) – No change in rates
  • Xylo, Scorpio, Tavera, Sumo Grande, Qualis, Safari, etc.. (middle price tag) – No change in rates
  • Eeco, Omni Van, Winger, Old Sumo, Bolero, etc.. (lowest price tag) – No change in rates
  • Tempo Traveller / Wingers – No change in rates
At times while going from Srinagar to Leh, you might need to work out few things if there have been some tensions in taxi unions of Kargil and Leh. In order to settle it out, what they do is that they make a transit point just before Fotu La while going to Leh from Kargil. All Leh taxis stop there and Kargil taxis too. They exchange passengers and move back in respective directions. Leh taxis take passengers to Leh coming from Srinagar/Kargil and Kargil guys take passengers to Srinagar/Kargil coming from Leh. But, that happens only when there is an issue.

Below you can find the entire rate list of Leh taxi union rates for 2017 – 18 for sightseeing purposes within Ladakh, towards Manali and towards Srinagar for this current year which is same as that of the last year. I have highlighted the important or most frequently referred rates in the rate list below just to ease out that task for you 🙂:

I am still enlisting below some of the most frequently visited trips in Ladakh and applicable Taxi rates for sightseeing to Nubra, Pangong Tso and Tso Moriri. This will help you quickly get rough idea of your budget for taxi in Leh – Ladakh.

  • Srinagar – Leh in 2 days = Rs 18400
  • Leh Local sightseeing = Rs 2500-3000
  • Leh – Nubra Valley 2 Day = Rs 10566
  • Leh – Pangong Tso 2 Day = Rs 10301

    Hi Dheeraj,

I cannot contact Rigzin, Chamba or Sonam Angdus by WhatsApp, could you please provide their WA number?

  2. Hi Dheeraj,

First of all, we are big fans of DoW. We did Spiti last year based on your recommended itinerary and we’re now planning a 10-day Ladakh trip. Had one question regarding our itinerary. We’re flying to Leh and coming back via Manali. Enroute we’re planning to stop by at Sarchu overnight. Our Leh driver is recommending that we stop by at Jispa rather. He says Sarchu is higher, hence lower oxygen and also colder. What do you recommend?

    • Well, Vinayak, if you have already stayed at Pangong Tso and Tso Moriri in your plan, Sarchu will be OK to sleep while coming back. But, while going from Manali to Leh, I never recommend staying at Sarchu because the body do not adapt to such conditions in Manali. So, I will say both options are OK in case you are not sleeping over at Pangong Tso and Tso Moriri or suffering from some health issues, you should be OK to stay at Sarchu. Jispa by all means is a long drive in comparison and far safer to sleep. When are you making this trip?

    Hi,
July 10th to July 21st 2017.. Me n my friends were on Road trip to Manali-Jispa-Leh-Nubra-Pangong-Drass
Thanks to DOW..indeed helped us a lot to create our itinerary & of-course we were able to visit each of these places peacefully with help of our very lovely friend “Padma” whom we found here itself.
5 Star to Padma. Thanks Devilonwheels 🙂

    Hi Dheeraj,

We had planned our Leh trip in July this year using DoW and it helped us a lot. Many thanks for your guidance and the work you have done through this blog.

Many thanks for the tips as we also helped with some stationary for the kids.

We would like to share another drivers number here who was quite helpful, down to earth ,honest and a pro on the roads!

    Rinchen – 09419982819/09622780826

If you could add him to your site then I would be grateful and happy that I am helping him in whatever small way I can 🙂

  5. Hi Dheeraj
We are looking for XUV from leh,
    Itinerary
12th Sept Airport to Hotel drop
    13- zanskar
    14-return to leh
    15-nubra
    16-return to leh
    17- pangong
    18-return to leh
    19- tso kar+ tso miriri
    20 return
    Is this itinerary good?
Can you tell me approx car rate for all these places..
Is it advisable to do pangong and unbranded by leh bus and other two by car or whole journey by car?

    • Hi Priyanka,

The first two days you will have to rest in Leh only and Zanskar Valley need 4-5 days from Kargil to make something out of it. So, in just 2 days you cannot make that trip anyways. USe the extra day to spend in Nubra Valley for visiting Turtuk. As per the taxi union rates of year 2017-18 (http://devilonwheels.com/leh-ladakh-taxi-rates-2017-18/) following is the break up
      Srinagar – Leh in 2 days = 18400
      Leh Local sightseeing = 2500-3000
      Leh – Nubra Valley 2 Day = 10566
      Leh – Pangong Tso 2 Day = 10301
      Leh – Tso Moriri – Tso Kar – Sarchu – Manali 2-3 days = 29056
      Leh – Manali 2 Days = 21588
      Leh – Pangong Tso 1 Day = 8653
      Leh – Nubra Valley 1 Day = 8053
You can usually get about 10-15% discount on these taxi rates after getting in touch with the driver directly.

      • Hi Dheeraj!
These rates that you mention are for which car ?

A hotel quoted me 30K for a Innova for a very standard itinerary below –
        Day 1 Leh – Airport
        Day 2 – Leh – Local siteseeing
Day 3 Leh – Local siteseeing
        Day 4 Leh – Nubra
        Day 5 Nubra – Leh
Day 6 Leh to Pangong Lake
        Day 7 Pangong to Leh
        Day 8 Leh to Airport
        Please let me know.

        Thanks

        • There isn’t too much difference. I believe if you will talk to drivers directly then you will get a better deal for the above itinerary.

  6. smitakariwadekar on

Hi Dheeraj…I am yet again back with some queries, this time related to Ladakh :)..I am wondering if its advisable for 7 people to travel in an innova/ xylo or similar car for sightseeing in ladakh..have heard mixed stories also..some operators say more than 6 ppl are not even allowed to travel in a SUV, but some operators say its allowed..Whats your view? Is it allowed and is it advisable or its not allowed and not even advisable from comfort point of view. In that case, is a tempo traveller more comfortable? Plz let me know..thanks in advance..

    • Smita, there is no such restriction and it depends upon the comfort of people. Of course, 6 is tight and 7 is very very tight and uncomfortable. People complain a lot when they make such trips and hence, many operators avoid such groups which right from the start means trouble. Ladakh journey means lot of long distance trips and being on road every day. You should consider taking a tempo traveller or having two taxis for a comfortable trip.

      • Smita Kariwadekar on

        Hi Dheeraj,
One more query..seek your views…we have got a sight seeing quote from an operator named ghoom le..their quote is lesser than what we have got from others for d same itinerary..any idea/feedback abt them? Thanks in advance..

  7. Hi Dheeraj,

Really informative blog and has tons of information so thank you for keeping it online. The rate card is a little confusing so I was hoping if you could help out.

What would think would be an approx. cost for booking a private taxi based on the following details:

Day 1 – airport pick up to hotel in Leh
Day 2 – Local sight seeing in Leh
Day 3 – Leh to Nubra Valley…basically Sumur
Day 4 and 5 – in Sumar but can explore near by places…would love some suggestions
Day 6 – Sumur to Leh
Day 7 – Leh to Pangyong
Day 9 – Pangyong to Leh
    Day 10 – Airport drop

Would appreciate your help on this and any suggestions on the itinerary above

    Cheers,
    AK

Me and my husband are going on this 16th to leh It’s just a short trip of three days till 19th. Cna you please tell me how much it costs for both of us to go to pangong from leh and nubra valley? And it would be helpful for us if you could share what are the other major places we can cover in three days.

  9. Hi,

Thanks for the updated information! I’ve been to Ladakh thrice during the summers, and am planning to do a week or more in January ’18. Mainly want to do the Changthang route of:-

    Leh- Tangtse-Pangong Tso
    Pangong Tso-Chushul-Hanle
    Hanle-Tso Moriri-Leh.

Is this feasible? Do the drivers come along this far and would it be mighty expensive for 3 people?

    Thanks!

    • Yes Arun, people do Leh to Tangtse, Tangtse – Pangong Tso – Chusul – Loma – Hanle, Hanle – Tso Moriri – Chumathang, Chumathang – Leh in winters. Not all drivers agree to it but yes there are some who have got very accustomed including Rigzin and Sonam.

  10. Visited Ladakh during first the week of Jun 2017, DOW forum was very helpful for planning the entire tour. But for my surprise our tour Driver Jimmy (better to address him our tour manager) was very helpful and informative and took us to places beyond our itinerary within the agreed tour cost. He was just like a friend and caring brother throughout our tour helping us with his local knowledge and cautioning us about AMS. He also helped us to arrange Guest House and tents in all locations. He had taken us to Srinagar from Leh and even arranged for house boat and taxi at Srinagar in very short duration. He is now a friend for ever and I would always recommend him to tourist visiting ladakh. Just be with him for one day he will even accompany you to shopping and bargain on your behalf. Even throwing snow balls at us and being part of family. He owns a Mahindra Xyalo and it is equipped with all the modern gadgets least to say it has an invertor (we even charged our camera with it), led flash light on roof top to manoeuvre through icy and rocky terrain during pitch darkness. Jimmy’s vehicle was the only one vehicle equipped with show chains, the chains on the wheel was very helpful in driving on icy roads at khardungla and changla pass on a heavy snow fall day which e experienced. Interacting with Jimmy you can come to know about the warm-heartedness of ladhaki people. I will always recommend him to all because he is a very cautious driver and never in a hurry for overtaking and driving at reckless speed, this is the one of the best qualities he possesses which I feel is very much needed while driving in dangerous high mountains say it in changla, khardungla or zojila. His face book id is “jimmy khangsar”, and his phone nos are No. 9906997404,9469171101,8368628819 (depending upon places he is at say it at Srinagar, leh, manali, pangong Toso.) pet word ‘KYO NEHAI” means “DON’T WORRY”

  12. Nitin Dongre on

    Hi Dheeraj,
I have finalized the following itinary for the my trip between 18 August to 25 August
    Day1: 18 August-Reached Leh: 12:00 AM
Day2: 19 August- Leh Local Sightseeing
    Day3: 20 August- Leh – Khardung la – – Deskit -Nubra Valley (120 KM)
Day4: 21 August- Nubra Valley – Pangong Tso- 120 KM)
Day5: 22 August- Pangong Tso Lake – Thicksey Monastery – Shey Palace – Leh
Day6: 23 August- Leh to Tso Moriri Lake
Day7: 24 August- Moriri Lake – Leh)-Tso Moriri – Tso Kar – Debring (Manali – Leh Highway starts) – Taglang La – Upshi – Leh
Day8: 25 August- Return to Pune
is this doable or do you have any suggestion to modify the same. Is there any website where we can get some one to share the taxi fair
any idea which is the best place to stay at Moriri Lake,Nubra & Pangong Tso.

    • Yes, Nitin, your plan listed above is doable. You can check the nice, preferred list of accommodation options in entire Leh – Ladakh (Leh, Nubra Valley, Pangong Tso, Tso Moriri) including moderate (cheap budget hotels as well) in the series of articles starting on the link here

You can post your travel calendar entry and explore others from the main menu of the website. you will be able to find the shared taxi without much fuss at all. There are lots of flyers which people put at cafes, dine-ins, restaurants, travel agent desks/shops/whiteboards wanting to share the taxis for different trips within Ladakh. Even travel agent organize such shared taxis trip as well but charge a little higher about Rs 200-300 more than it would ideally cost. So, in worst case you can always go back to them and book a seat for yourself. Gelling up with people in Ladakh is more or less easy because many people travel solo and look forward to meet new people and share cultural thoughts and values over the trip.

    • Hi Nitin,

I’m also planning to go to leh on 18 august and will return on 25 august. My itinerary is almost same as yours. Could you please share your contact no l, email address, and facebook id?

    Hi Dheeraj,

    Our itinerary is as under.
Day 1. (21.09.17) Reaching Leh by air and complete rest.
    Day 2. Leh local.
Day 3. Journey to Kargil via Lamayuru.
Day 4. Kargil to Leh via Alchi, Likir,Magnetic hill, pathar sahib etc.
    Day 5. Leh to Nubra.
Day 6. Hunder to Turtuk and back.
    Day 7. Nubra to leh.
Day 8.Leh to Pangong via Shey, Thiksey.
Day 9. Pangong to leh via Hemis.
    Day 10. Fly back.
    Now my queries are
    A. Is my itinerary ok ?
    B. Can accompany my mother(70 yrs) at Pangong ?
C.Should I book hotel at Leh ,Nubra and other places and also car ? They are asking standard rate of July/ August.
    D. Can you provide me phone no who owns Tempo traveller.
E.Can we visit Siachin base camp? Do we need permit?
    Please reply.
    Pradip Chakraborty

    • Hi Pradeep,

      1. Yes, your plan looks decent to me.
      2. AMS does not matter with respect to age. You all are equally vulnerable to AMS like your mother.
      3. Better get in touch with a local driver and book a taxi which they don’t charge extra unless you go through an agent. He will pick you up and help you searching the hotels as well on the spot.
      4. You can call the local drivers directly to connect with them and check the more comprehensive List of Taxi Drivers for Ladakh – Srinagar – Leh – Manali with recommendations/reviews for DoW community members.
      5. You need permission from Indian Army in Leh to get to Siachen base camp.

  14. Saddam Hodsain on

Is there all time snow in ladakh.
And will u please give me the transportation cost to visit leh from srinagar.

    • In general, it is fine to take the children of such age group because AMS do not matter with respect to age or sex or any fitness level. It can happen to anyone of any age or sex or fitness I shall say :D.. The issue with children is that they tend to exert the body considering it the same kind of place they belong to and this elevates the chances of getting struck with AMS. Secondly, they are not much expressive about their uneasy feelings, so it is parents who need to watch out and take care that the child is not suffering from uneasy feelings, headache or nausea and is behaving properly. With 5+ year child, I think he/she would be able to convey the uneasiness with little efforts. If you notice any such feeling or he/she tells you about such a feeling then please do not ascend anywhere, either descend to lower altitude or stay at the same place to watch things overnight and if symptom increase then start descending immediately. Same is applicable for any adult as well. And yes, do keep the body adequately hydrated!!

Also, PLEASE read the article: Traveling to Ladakh with Kids or Babies. This article covers this topic in complete detail.

  15. Saddam Hodsain on

Will u please suggest what will be the perfect time to travel through srinagar-leh-manali highway. On the basis of current weather condition. And we are a 5 people group so which way will be perfect to travel, from Srinagar or manali with which Vehicle??
And is there all time snow in ladakh. And what will be the gate closing date for srinagar-leh-manli highway??

  18. Hi, Dheeraj

I’m planing to go from Srinagar to Leh in two days on Aug/13 and Aug/14
We got 6 people and some baggage
We want to take taxi, then what should we do now?
    Please give some advice.
    Thanks

    • Please get connected with some of the drivers mentioned in the article above or the link of the comprehensive list provided in the article. You should talk to them to see who can fit the luggage above.

  19. Hi Dheeraj,

    Tremendous information on your portal.

We are 5 people travelling from chandigarh to leh via srinagar.

query1 :- Below travel plan to leh is ok or or you want to add something to it to make more interesting and enjoyable.
    chandigarh to patnitop (nightstay)
    patnitop to sonmarg (nightstay)
    sonmarg to leh

    query 2:-
We will be travelling by taxi from chandigarh, as you suggested we have to hire a local taxi in leh as outside taxis are not allowed. So can you please give me any Idea for how much i can hire it for the whole trip which includes:-
    LEH LOCAL SIGHTSEEING
    leh khardungla
    Leh-nubra
    nubra to pangong

    query 3:-
since we have our own taxi and while coming back we will be following the manali route, so can we travel by our own taxi to jispa or we have to hire the local one.

    • Hey Sumit,

      Replies below:

      1. It looks OK to me though it will be better if you sleep at Alchi from Sonamarg and don’t directly go to Leh. This will cut the journey by 1.5-2 hrs and also helps in acclimatization

      2. Nubra, Pangong Tso and local sightseeing will cost you around 24K

      3. Jispa falls in Himachal and also on Manali – Leh route, so no restriction of taxis there.

      • Hi Dheeraj,

        Thanks for your quick response.

        1. We are carrying our own tent, can you please suggest on the whole trip where we can do camping using that tent, which can save our living expenses in hotels.

        2. is khardungla pass is on the way to Nubra valley or we need to keep a separate day for that?

        • ok,

while coming back from leh to chandigarh, where we can take the night halts in between manali and leh?

        • Also,
if i travel like below is is feasible :-

          day 1: chandigarh to patnitop
          day 2:- patnitop to kargil
          day 3:- kargil to leh

and is there any particular time interval for taxi’s in which they have to cross srinagar or sonmarg, like in rohtang pass during 9-12 only), something like that ???

        • Hey Sumit, it will be too much. Do it like below:

          Chandigarh – Patnitop
          Patnitop to Sonamarg
          Sonamarg to Kargil/Mulbekh/Lamayuru/Uley/Alchi
          Kargil/Mulbekh/Lamayuru/Uley/Alchi – Leh

Yes, Zojila pass currently have time restrictions. In the afternoon only traffic from Sonamarg to Kargil is allowed.

    • 1. if we take our tent with us and do camping in sarchu or at any other place in Leh or Himachal on our way, do we require any sought of permit for camping?

      2. Also we are travelling by a private number plate Innova taxi, not yellow, with driver, so can we take that anywhere in Leh or do we still need to hire the local taxi??

        • ok thanks, my 2nd question also requires your answer.

          2. Also we are travelling by a private number plate Innova taxi, not yellow, with driver, so can we take that anywhere in Leh or do we still need to hire the local taxi??

        • You can take it anywhere as long as if checked the vehicle belongs to one of you sitting in the car or your parents or the driver or his parents. It will come under scanner only if confronted for checking. Also, all of you should not the same story to tell whose car is it and who is driving it and why is he driving it. Any sense of commercial reason will force you to park the car and hire a local taxi.

  22. Uttam Sharma R on

    Hi Dheeraj,

WE, 6 adults are planning for Leh trip from 30 june till 7th july. Intending to hire bullet for local sigh seeing. Confused over taking a flight from delhi or a 6 seater cab from delhi to leh. Apart from the seating capacity and comfort within the car, any other reasons would you suggest for or against choosing a cab from delhi to leh? Is it advisable to drive the cab ourselves or should we necessarily need a professional local driver’s help to negotiate the roads to leh?

    • Hi Uttam,

It will take 4 days to reach Leh from Srinagar side starting from Delhi with stop overs at Jammu, Srinagar, Kargil and 3 days to come back from Leh from Manali side to Delhi with stopovers at Sarchu, Manali. This makes it 7 days. 1 Day is required in Leh for acclimatization. You have about 8 days only. So, better fly in and fly out of Leh to make some sense of Ladakh trip.

You can check a very balanced and most common itinerary for Leh – Ladakh by Air followed by many travelers including me at the link here for 9 days: Leh – Ladakh | Most Common Itinerary by Air.

  26. Hi Dheeraj, we r planning to visit leh by manali leh highway around 26th may is it possible n we are driving by self …we have Tata zest car.. is it safe with that car ….

    • Hi Pranoti,

As of now, Manali – Leh is expected to open by 25th May, so your date is very touch and go. Also, in the initial days, the highway is not that stable with snow sliding and landslides. It takes a week or two at least to settle the road after opening.

  27. Bhaskar Roy on

    Hi Dheeraj,

    Thanx for all these information.

One thing I need to know, what is leh’s local conveyance? Suppose I need to go to local market from our hotel, or need a drop at airport, what will be the conveyance and what will be the cost?

    Regards

    • Bhaskar, in such a case you can hire the taxi for whole day or just for local couple of places and market, the taxi will cost around Rs 1000-1200 and for airport drop around rs 600-700

  28. Hi,

I could not make out anything in the pictures you have posted.
Could you please upload a clearer copy?
    Thank you.

    • As per the taxi union rates of year 2017-18 (http://devilonwheels.com/leh-ladakh-taxi-rates-2017-18/) following is the break up
      Srinagar – Leh in 2 days = 18400
      Leh Local sightseeing = 2500-3000
      Leh – Nubra Valley 2 Day = 10566
      Leh – Pangong Tso 2 Day = 10301
      Leh – Tso Moriri – Tso Kar – Sarchu – Manali 2-3 days = 29056
      Leh – Manali 2 Days = 21588
      Leh – Pangong Tso 1 Day = 8653
      Leh – Nubra Valley 1 Day = 8053
You can usually get about 10-15% discount on these taxi rates after getting in touch with the driver directly.

  29. Hi Dhreeraj,

Thanks for providing really valuable information.

What you think …whether June 1st week will be roads clear.. Manali to Leh?

We are planning to visit Leh in 1st week – 2 week of June via Bike..

  30. Dheeraj, can you tell me if the rates are inclusive of fuel or excluding fuel? How much is the driver bata per day on an average?

  31. Dheeraj, Im slightly confused by the rates. Are these rates per person for a shared jeep or rather for the total cost of a jeep regardless of who is sharing it?

  32. Kushal Gandhi on

    Hi Dheeraj,

I am planning to do solo travelling to Leh Via Manali end at Srinagar in mid of july. Have certain querries, can you guide me on same ?

    1. Will be reaching till Leh by pulbic transport (HPTDC buses) are they safe and comfortable or should i explore other options ?
    2. For travel in Leh,i.e Local SS, Pangong, Tso miri, Nubra do unions have shared tax service, since I am alone and hiring private cab is not feasible. Can you guide me on that ?
    3. What are Scenic attraction Leh -Kargil – Srinagar and share taxi available for this route ?

    • Hi Kushal,

      1. HPTDC offer tourist buses, safe as other vehicles of course and comforting than shared local taxis.
      2. You are alone and private taxis are very costly in Leh but you will be able to find the shared taxi without much fuss at all.
      3. Since you will be traveling with shared taxi on this route, it will not matter much for you. Enjoy the scenes as they come and pass.

    • Sandeep, you just need permit to travel beyond Rohtang Pass. In case you are hiring a taxi, the taxi guy will manage it. Yes Manali – Leh will open by 11th June.

  37. Bhaskar Roy on

    Hi Dheeraj,

I have plan to visit Ladakh in coming Sept and have contacted a driver for exclusive Xylo for 15 days.

I have got his name and contact details from the top rated driver list of your blog.

For 15 days [from Kalka to Lamayuru – all place covered], he has asked for 82K [all inclusive cost for car & travel] and agreed to allow us a reasonable discount.

Now, he asked for a 10K advance in his bank account.

Please tell me what is your advice / suggestion on this. Should I trust him with advance.

    Regards.

    • Bhaskar, it all depends upon you. I cannot endorse or ascertain them on trust factor, judging by the feedback of people or community members on the website, you can take your own call. Check the DoW Community thread and see feedback from others, try few more and if all are asking for a discount, you will have to make a choice in such a case.
