Leh – Ladakh Taxi Rates 2016 – 17

414

Its time to the start the Leh – Ladakh season 2016 – 17 and in this article today, I will be sharing the Leh – Ladakh Taxi Rates 2016 – 17 of leh taxi union 🙂 🙂 … Well, unexpectedly, this year the prices are of Leh – Ladakh taxis have not been hiked and there is a pending decision just to decide on the prices of Tempo Traveller hike. Finally, some sense has prevailed in Leh – Ladakh taxi union and with this move of not hiking the taxi prices in season 2016-17, the rocket high prices will have control to some extent 🙂 🙂 … I expected around 8-10% but the news is a pleasant surprise. You might know that, few of year ago the taxi union has separated the rates on the basis of model and make of the taxis. There are XUVs too available as taxi now, which falls in the category of Innova and Xylo… The taxi grouping along with price hikes for this year, which is same as last year, are as follow with an exception of Xylo moving to Category B:-

  • XUV, Innova and Aria (highest price tag) – 0% Hike in Charges
  • Xylo, Scorpio, Tavera, Sumo Grande, Qualis, Safari, etc.. (middle price tag) – 0% Hike in Charges
  • Eeco, Omni Van, Winger, Old Sumo, Bolero, etc.. (lowest price tag) – 0% Hike in Charges
  • Tempo Traveller / Wingers – To be decided

Below you can find the entire rate list of leh taxi union rates for 2016 – 17 for sightseeing purposes within Ladakh, towards Manali and towards Srinagar for this current year which is same as that of last year 2015 – 16. I have highlighted the important or most frequently refereed rates in the rate list below just to ease out that task for you 🙂:

Please note that, while going from Srinagar to Leh, you might need to work out few things as there have been some tensions now in taxi unions and to settle it out what they have done is that they have a transit point just before Fotu La while going to Leh from Kargil. All Leh taxis stop there and kargil taxis too. They exchange passengers and move back in respective directions. Leh taxis take passengers to Leh coming from Srinagar/Kargil and Kargil guys take passengers to Srinagar/kargil coming from Leh

  1. Are there any self-drive cars available from Shimla ?
I am not interested in Delhi or Chandigarh rentals, not interested in driving huge distances either

Alternatively, what are the charges from Shimla for a 1-way drop to Narkanda, or to Fagu ?

  2. Hello

I am arriving to Leh on the 29th of August. I have a question about renting a taxi from Leh to the Nubra Valley for 3 days. Do you need to book this taxi before you come to Leh? I got a response from the Travel Himalayas website that I have to do it earlier. But I wonder if this can not be done on the day of departure. I understand that in Leh there is a place where these taxis stand and you can come, pay and go for 3 days? Can this be a problem and I have to book it beforehand?

  3. Hello
In a month I’m flying from Poland to Leh. Then I want to take a taxi and go to the Nubra and Turtuk valleys. And to Pangong Lake also by taxi. Do you need some special permission to go there? I read the information but some are contradictory. And if he needs such permission, where do I have to make it and how long it takes.

    Please provide some information.

  7. Hi Dhiraj,

Thank you for creating this, I bumped into this website and read your responses and they are very helpful. I was wondering if you could help me.

My wife and I are planning a 7 day trip to Leh from August 26th – September 2, 2017. Our flights are booked both to-and-fros. Would you help me design my itinerary, I have not taken any tour plan as such as of yet, what would you suggest? Are taxis very expensive? I inquired with thrillophilia and they quoted 23k per person for 7 days trip including transportation. Can you suggest what should we do? how can we get the best out of our 7 day trip at favorable costing? Should we contact any driver and book with him? Also, as one of your posts suggest, 2 people going alone might get very expensive, what d you suggest should be done in our case. Are there any websites or any forums where we can get travel partners? or any driver whom you suggest can plan a trip for us including taxi?

    Please help

    • Hello Ankit,

You can explore the travel calendar from the menu to find out travel partners and post your own entries too. You check the DoW Travel Calendar from the link in the Main Menu of website. There had been about 600+ entries of the people planning their trips in last couple of seasons which helped them have better visibility for finding out travel partners. You can filter entries based on the preferences you have and increase chances of visibility. Hence, kindly explore DoW Travel Calendar and also post your entry too. This will help you find other fellow travellers looking for company and increase the probability of finding your post by others too.

You are alone/couple and private taxis are very costly in Leh but you will be able to find the shared taxi without much fuss at all. There are lots of flyers which people put at cafes, dine-ins, restaurants, travel agent desks/shops/whiteboards wanting to share the taxis for different trips within Ladakh. Even travel agent organize such shared taxis trip as well but charge a little higher about Rs 200-300 more than it would ideally cost. So, in the worst case, you can always go back to them and book a seat for yourself. Gelling up with people in Ladakh is more or less easy because many people travel solo and look forward to meeting new people and share cultural thoughts and values over the trip.

You can follow a normal plan for 6 days like below:

Day 1 | Delhi – Leh (By Flight)
      — Checkin at Hotel. Many hotels provide free pick and drop from Airport. Ask while you book them.
      — Take ample of rest as well as water or anything that keep your body hydrated enough. DO NOT OVER HYDRATE. Take ORS Soluted water or ORS – L tetra packs from home.
      — Do not over exert your body at any cost. Avoid too much up-down on stairs or avoid it in entirety, if possible.
      — After 5-6 Hrs of rest you can visit Leh Palace, Local Leh market, Shankar Gompa .
      — If you feel exerted go back to Hotel, have dinner at Hotel and take rest. Avoid any exertion. Else continue and,
      — Follow the sunset by stroll at Changspa road and have a nice dinner on varied cuisines offered in-around Changspa road.
      — Go back to hotel for overnight stay at Leh.

Day 2 | Leh Local Sighseeing + Acclimatization
      — Hire a taxi from Leh taxi stand or Hotel whichever suits you.
      — Bargain with taxi driver and you can refer the thread for a comprehensive list of drivers: List of Taxi Drivers for Ladakh – Srinagar – Leh – Manali
      — Take his inputs if you feel reasonable and if required modify the plan accordingly but should suits you best.
      — Ask him to be with you guys starting first day itself, if required and charged reasonable else do it at your own.
      — Again DO NOT over exert and take little steps and slow walks only.
      — If feeling OK then do Local sightseeing. To know the about the places to visit check the link: Travel Guide for Local Sightseeing of Leh Town in Ladakh
      — Do not use stairs at any of these places just to see them as it will exert your body much more.

  10. Dear Dheeraj,

Your quick response to every query is commendable.

We’re a group of 4 adults, traveling to Leh in the first week of July.
We start from Chandigarh, do Shimla -Manali -Leh-Nubra-Pangong lake-Srinagar in the span of just 11 days.
We have a self drive car from Chandigarh airport and we’ll be hiring a bike just for Leh (4-5 days).
    Now, I have 3 questions:
    1. Please suggest a rough itinerary, as this is all of our’s first ever visit to Leh and Srinagar (the must-do places and what can be skipped).
    2. Can we directly hire bikes when we get to Sarchu maybe? Or Leh?
    3. Can we hire just the driver since we already have a car and I’ve read about how bad the roads are, so I don’t want any of us to drive in Leh.

    Kindly revert.

    • Hi Pratima,

      1. Before I suggest, how are you planning to return the car at Srinagar?
      2. You have to get the bikes in Leh.
      3. Outside rented self drive car is not allowed for sightseeing in Ladakh, you need to rent a Ladakh-based taxi after reaching Leh.

  13. Jigmee Lama on

Can you please let me know if it is possible to do a direct bike ride from Pangong to Tso Moriri in a single day? Then halt at Tso Moriri?

I read online that it is not possible to do a one day direct bike trip from Pangong to Tso Moriri due to bad roads and there are high chances of getting lost. Is it true that it takes 2 days to travel from Pangong to Tso Moriri?

    • It is possible but the route is desolated and takes about 12 Hrs to do so. Also, it will be back breaking ride as the road conditions are not that good. People do it Pangong tso to Tso Moriri but yes itis difficult.

  14. Dear Dhiraj
It has been wonderful to read your response to the quarries raised. I am 75 years and plan to visit Leh Ladakh in month of July. Is it ok if I land in Leh unplanned and then look for sharing transportation.

    • Amar ji, yes, it should be fine. you will be able to find the shared taxi without much fuss at all. So, in worst case you can always go back to them and book a seat for yourself. Gelling up with people in Ladakh is more or less easy because many people travel solo and look forward to meet new people and share cultural thoughts and values over the trip.

  15. Rubaina Pradhan on

    Hey! 🙂
Thank you for this very informative article. Can you kindly help us with some information.

We are 6 people from Darjeeling planning a bike trip and our itinerary is as follows:
8th August: Fly from Delhi to Leh. Halt at Leh.
9th August: Leh (Local sight seeing and Acclimatization). Leh to Magnetic Hill.
10th August: Leh to Nubra Valley (bike trip). Halt at Nubra.
11th August: Nubra Valley to Leh (bike trip). Halt at Leh.
12th August: Leh to Pangong (bike trip). Halt at Pangong.
13th August: Pangong to Leh (bike trip). Halt at Leh.
14th August: Leh to Tsomoriri (book a vehicle) and back to Leh.
15th August: Flight from Leh to Delhi.

Query 1: Will this itinerary be very hectic? Can you suggest any changes in the itinerary because we would like to make it a shorter trip? We would like to return to Delhi by 14th August and take a flight back to Bagdogra on the 15th. Have to join work you see. So can you kindly rearrange our itinerary accordingly?

Query 2: Will it be very cold in the first week of August? What kind of clothing do you recommend? Will there be heavy rain during this time?

    Thank you in advance.

    • Hi Rubaina,

      1. Well, you have to skip Tso Moriri as day trip is not possible else add one more day for it. Rest it is nicely done.
      2. Not really cold, cool and sometimes a bit cold in overcast conditions. Carry light woollens and a light woolens jacket.

      • Thank you so much for your quick response! 🙂
But I spoke to my friends and we have rearranged the itinerary as follows (seems like we have to get back to Delhi on the 14th). Due to the shortage of time we are very confused whether we should go to Nubra or Tso Moriri. What would you suggest?

8th August: Fly from Delhi to Leh. Halt at Leh.
9th August: Halt at Leh. (Local sight seeing and Acclimatization). Leh to Magnetic Hill.
10th August: Leh to Nubra Valley OR Tsomoriri (bike trip). Halt at Nubra/Tsomoriri
11th August: Nubra/Tsomoriri to Leh (bike trip). Halt at Leh.
12th August: Leh to Pangong (bike trip). Halt at Pangong.
13th August: Pangong to Leh (bike trip). Halt at Leh.
14th August: Flight from Leh to Delhi.

Also, do we have to carry rain coats/rain gear?

        Thank you once again 🙂

        • I will suggest going for Nubra Valley as you will already be doing one lake. Mostly rains do not affect Ladakh being rain shadow, so if you have space and already have rain coats it is ok to carry else a jacket / wind cheater should be enough.

  16. Hi Dheeraj,

July 3rd – Nubra valley to Pandong Tso, planning a stay at Pandong…. where to stay? Any contacts that can be booked now
4th – Pandong to Leh / Tso Miri ri (which one is good)
5th – Tso Miri Stay at night…. where to stay? Any contacts that can be booked now.
6th – Tso Miriri to Leh
    7th – Leh
8th – Leh to Bangalore flight

If above is not good, can I skip Pangdong Tso as I heard Tso Tso Miri is better?
Do you think shared taxis / like minded people available for this trip ?
How much does it cost for shared taxi? If not how much to go alone.

    Thanks for the help…

    • Hi chakri,

To make it less hectic I will suggest the below plan:

2nd- Nubra valley and night stay… would like to do river rafting… which place to stay?
July 3rd – Nubra valley to Leh
      4th – Leh – Pangong Tso
      5th – Pangong Tso – Leh
      6th – Leh – Tso Moriri
      7th – Tso Moriri – Leh

you will be able to find the shared taxi without much fuss at all. So, in worst case you can always go back to them and book a seat for yourself.

      • Thanks Dheeraj… Should I book taxi and accomadation in advance? If I prefer book taxi with Rigzin / others, should I pay in advance before starting the trip, how much? Are they trustable? My point is 90% times phone lines were unreachable. How to trace them ? During this first week july peak season of travel, is it ok to book accommodation on spot during trip at pangong and nubra?
Is monsoon likely during first week of July?
        Thanks a zillion brother.

        • You can book a taxi in advance and they charge some token money. Or you can be in touch with them the maximum possible and then on reaching Leh contact them again. 1000s of people trust them every year, so I will take the risk based on my appetite. If you are not too much particular about the place or choosy on stay options, you will surely get something to stay almost all over Ladakh especially homestays.

  17. Hi Dheeraj.

  18. Fatema Bootwala on

    Hello Dheeraj!
We are 4 girls travelling to leh on 25th july. We really need help with a driver. My husband travelled a year back and met with this amazing person called ‘Naseer’ and he was their driver. Can’t get through his number though. Also, please look at the itenary and revert back for changes.
    Day: leh
    DAY 2 : leh
Day 3 : leh to pangong
    Day 4: pangong to nubra
Day 5 : nubra to turtuk to leh.
Day 6: leh to drass. Including kargil and river rafting.
    Day 7: drass to leh.

    • Fatema, please do Nubra Valley first and then do Pangong Tso so that acclimatization is proper. Also, skip Drass/Kargil and do Sham Valley tour where you can do the rafting too.

For the leh – ladakh taxi union rate list 2017 – 18 including the contacts of some reliable taxi drivers within Leh – Ladakh, check the link here. You can get about 12-15% of discount by directly getting in touch with drivers and of course, talking in person rather on phone always help in bargaining more. You can call the local drivers directly to connect with them and check the more comprehensive List of Taxi Drivers for Ladakh – Srinagar – Leh – Manali with recommendations/reviews for DoW community members.

Could you please let us know the taxi fare for the whole trip so that we can plan accordingly?

    Thanks!

      25: Manali – Jispa
      26: Jispa – Leh
27: Leh – Acclimatize, Permits, Rest

  22. Rakesh Venkatesh on

    Hello Dheeraj

Tell me one thing. Do we need to pay for drivers food expense separately or is it included in the total amount they charge? Also what about their stay at night? Do they sleep in their car itself?

    • Hi Rakesh,

The above rates are all included with all expenses of drivers, you do not need to pay anything extra. However, as general courtesy, you should always ask your driver that if he would like to eat or sleep at a place or has he arranged for food and stay or need your help. This always goes a long way in leaving a good impression to these honest and noble people. They will politely refuse it but personally, I always ask them and make sure at times I eat with them too even forcefully, but that is a personal choice

What would be cost of private taxi and your recommendation regarding the itinerary.

  25. Hi Dheeraj

We are 5 girls planning to travel to Leh via manali on 21st July and need your help to guide me for my tour and taxi rates from Manali to Srinagar

Day 1: Manali City Tour(Night Stay in Manali)
Day 2: Leave for Sarchu (Night Stay in Sarchu)
Day 3: Leave for Leh(Night Stay in Leh)
Day 4: Leh City Tour(Night Stay in Leh)
Day 5: Leh to Nubra(Night Stay in Nubra)
Day 6: Nubra to Pangong(Night Stay in Pangong)
Day 7: Pangong to Leh(Night Stay in Leh)
Day 8: Leh to Kargil(Night Stay in Kargil)
Day 9: Kargil to Sonamarg(Night Stay in Sonamarg)
Day 10: Drop to Srinagar airport

    • Well, please DO NOT sleep at night at Sarchu while going to Leh from Manali. You will not be acclimatized. Sleep at Jispa and do Jispa to Leh next day. Make sure you have some other vehicles to accompany you all on the desolated route of Nubra to Pangong Tso. Also, on Day 4 you will need permits from DC office and also pay the environment fee.

      • Hi Dheeraj

I do not understand how to make sure some other vehicles accompany us if they have different plans. Also the permits required will be done by the taxi drivers or we will have to look into that?
Can you please guide me what will be the approximate taxi (Innova) charges for the whole trip.

        • You will have to get the permits from Leh DC Office and pay the environment fee. The driver can help you get on your behalf but will need details from you only. For details on inner line permits process and to download application form read the link here

In case there is no company and by any ill luck a mechanical failure happens on that route, help will be hard to find in many miles. So, take the risk accordingly. You can wait at Agham village and carry forward when other vehicles arrive. Your taxi cost should be around 46-50K

  26. Hi Dheeraj,

We are travelling to Leh on 2-11 June 2017. We are 8 members and travelling to Leh by road from Delhi.
We will take bus from Delhi to Manali on 2nd June and take one day halt at Manali. we will continue our journey from Manali to Leh from 4th June.

My question is which car we choose 2 innova or 1 tempo traveller? Actually we have one person along with us which has high motion sickness problem. Please suggeset what will be the best for us.

    • Two Innova’s will be costly but much more comfortable than a tempo. Tempo will be cheaper, a bit uncomfortable but also provide all you firends to travel together and enjoy the journey together.

  27. Hi Dheeraj,

First of all I would like to say thanks to you for the detailed information 🙂

Me and my wife are planing for Leh trip from 1st August to 8th Aug.

The areas which we wanted to cover are Pangong Lake, Nubra Valley, Tso Moriri, Magnetic Hill, Monasteries etc.

    I have few queries:

Is it safe if we visit all these places by rented bike?
If not bike, will there be any shared taxis available?
What would be average trip cost(only travel) if we take shared taxis?
Suggestions for any other place apart from above mentioned places.

    Kind Regards,
    Gaurav

    • Hi Gaurav,

      1. I will say 100s of people do it every year, however, I will recommend that in case you do not have experience in riding bike in mountains, it is better to stick to other means of transport. There will be shared taxis available around Changspa road and main market where people put flyers looking for other people to share taxi costs. You can hunt them out. One trip to these places is in the range of Rs 1500-Rs2000 per seat.

      • Thank You Dheeraj !

Could you please suggest any other good place to visit apart from Nubra Valley, Pangong Lake and Tso Moriri as we have 7 full days.

  28. hello.
I want to visit leh on 26 of july and please inform me about the taxi cost regarding
    1. arrive Leh – Main Bazaar ,Shanti Stupa , …. ,……
    2. Leh sightseeing…
    3. Leh-Khardungla Pass-Diskit monastery -Nubra Valley
    4. Nubra Valley,……,…… to Pangong Lake ( Shyok Road)
    5. Pangong Lake,……,…… to Leh
    6. Leh -Magnetic Hill-Lamayuru-Alchi Monastery-Leh
    7. back

  29. Hello I am planning to visit leh in july 19 to 24,we are two members we want to cover all the local sights as well as pangong, magnetic hill and nubra valley..how much it cost to cover all the sights??

  30. Hi Dheeraj,
We (me and my spouse) are planning to visit Leh-Ladakh in the last week of May with the following itenarary
Day 1 : Arrival to Srinagar and pick up from Srinagar to Ladakh
Day 2 : Ladakh to Leh
Day 3: Leh Local sight seeing (Acclimatization)
Day 4 : leh to Nubra Valley
Day 5 : Nubra Valley to Pangong
    Day 6: Pangong to Leh
Day 7 : Depart from Leh

Regarding transport, I contacted one of the persons recommended/mentioned on this website, we are planning to hire a private taxi from Srinagar for the entire trip.

Can you comment on the itinerary and regarding how the advance taxi booking is usually done (like pay partly in advance through online??)

    • Hey Chetan,

You meant Kargil on Day 1 and Day 2. Rest looks OK, please do not take the direct route if you do not have any company with you of other vehicles.

Most drivers do not expect any advance but you need to remind them of your dates and be in touch with them so that they do not forget

      • Thanks for the quick response Dheeraj!

I meant one night halt at Kargil and, then from Kargil to Leh on Day2.

        One more clarification:
I didn’t get what you meant by “direct route”? Since we are travelling as a couple, we intend to go around places with our single vehicle. Is it a problem/risk?

        • Hi Chetan

What I meant by direct route is that there is a desolated route that connects Nubra Valley to Pangong tso directly without coming back to Leh. That route is not frequently visited by people and is desolate. Hence, it is always better that you travel on that route if there are other taxis or cars going in that direction so that in case of any emergency you have some help around.

  31. Ashish Goel on

    Hi Dheeraj,

We are planning a trip to leh and Ladakh in the month of July/August with below details:

Day 1 – Leh Market – Shanti Stupa ( acclimatize for the rest of the day)
Day 2 – Leh – Gurudwara Pathar Sahab – Magnetic Hill – Confluence of Indus and Zanskar – Alchi Monastery – Leh
Day 3 – Leh – Khadungla Pass – Panamik Hot Spring – Nubra Valley
Day 4 – Nubra Valley – Diskit Monastery – Buddha Statue – Leh
Day 5 – Leh – Chang La Pass – Pangong Lake
Day 6 – Pangong Lake – Tsomoriri Lake
Day 7 – Tsomoriri Lake – Puga – Tso Kar Lake – Hemmis Monastry – Leh

Request you to share your feedback or suggestions on the itinerary along with the expected cost of car rentals

    • Hi Ashish,

If you drop Tso Moriri, then your plan will be much easy on the body and you may enjoy more on the trip. But, it is doable though hectic as above too. You will need inner line permits to travel to these places.

      • Ashish Goel on

        Hi Dheeraj,

Thanks for your suggestion. Would that be Ok if we come back to Leh from Pangong and then leave for Tso Moriri a day after? I can extend my trip by a day or so.

Also, can you please advise on the expected cost of travel through taxi (Innova or similiar) for the above itinerary?

        Thanks,
        Ashish

  33. Hey there! Thanks for a super informative and updated site! I will be in Ladakh between May 15 – 22nd, traveling solo. Here’s the plan:

    May 15 – Acclimatize
May 16 – Sight seeing around Leh
May 17 – Leh -> Nubra Valley (via Khardong La)
    May 18 – Nubra Valley -> Leh
    May 19 – Leh -> Pangong Tso
    May 20 – Pangong Tso -> Leh
May 21 – Wrap up couple of places
    May 22 – Depart

How does this sound? I’m also traveling solo; would it be a good idea to hire a driver alone?
Regarding costs; I took a look at your page http://devilonwheels.com/how-to-calculate-cost-or-budget-for-leh-ladakh-trip/ > Privately Hired Taxi in Leh. Do the taxi costs include the costs of getting a pass (I’m from Malaysia)?
Regarding hiring a driver, should I hire someone now in advance, or wait till I get to Leh?
Lastly, if I want to do a day trek from Leh, what do you suggest?

    Thanks so much!
    Jay

    • Hi Jay,

Your Ladakh plan sounds OK to me. But, private taxi for individual for above trips to Nubra and Pangong Tso will cost around 20K for you being single. You can check for shared taxis of toruists in first two days and book a seat with them for these trips to save cost.

You can hire a driver once you reach Leh, which will be more helpful to you.

  34. Hi Dheeraj,

Pls let me know if you have any suggestions

  35. Anirban Banerjee on

    Hi Dheeraj,
You have really done an excellent job. I have gone through your articles in depth before planning my trips to ladakh frm 21.05.17 to 27.05.17.
I have booked Karma Sonam for the full trip and he assures me a 10% discount on union rates.
We are comprised of two families with two children below the age of 10. Our itinerary is as follows:
21.05- reaching leh in the morning and rest
    22.05-upto Alchi and back
    23.05-To Hunder after visiting Panamik
    24.05-hunder to pangong via shyok
25.05- pangong to leh via changla.
    26.05-yet to be decided
    27.05-back to kolkata via delhi
I have also booked hotel Tsokar of Mr. Dehlex for the first two nights.
Karma Sonam assured me of getting accommodation in nubra and pangong and thats why I have not booked.
I would like a little more favour of yours. If you could please update about taxi union rates for 2017-18, it would be wonderful.
Hope that my itinerary is good in respect of the small time.

    • Well, please skip Panamik to ease out the journey. Make sure you have company to travel to Pangong Tso from Nubra via Shyok route as it is very desolated. Else make two day trip to Nubra and two day trip to Pangong Tso using your spare day without being adventurous with the family of kids. IT seems fine. The new rates have not come out yet, they have been printed but taxi union is not releasing them.

      • Anirban Banerjee on

Thanks for your quick and valued reply. I have a little more query left. What could be the average climatic conditions in the third week of May at the places that I have planned to visit and the routes leading to them.

        • Leh & Nubra Valley should be OK with pleasant days, cool nights/early mornings.
Pangong tso will be quite cold and winds will make it worse
All the passes on the route will have snow and be freezing cold.

  36. Ashutosh Mishra on

    Hey Dheeraj,
Went through you site and ur blogs n number of times after booking my tickets for Leh. You have seriously done a great job by writing such informative articles.
Let me put up my case and query for u:
I have planned the trip from 14th April (morning flight from Delhi) to 22nd April (morning flight from Leh).
Booked the hotel for 14th April. Will be traveling with my wife.
Can I cover nubra, khardung la, tso moriri, tso pangong all these places plus other Monasteries in this period .
I had a word with Rigzin for booking of the taxi for this period and he gave me an estimate of Rs 30K for the complete trip.
Is there any scope for further discount from his side.
Or I should checkout with some other person.
Please try to help me with these 2 queries.

    • Thanks Ashutosh !!

You are already getting a steal of a deal if those all places he said he will take you 🙂

Secondly, the places will be open but the problem is Pangong Tso and Tso Moriri will be too cold for night stay. So, stay at Tangtse and Chumathang respectively.

  37. Vaishnavi on

    Hi ,

Great job first of all on posting valuable details. Me and my husband planning to visit a 4n/6d trip to Leh.
My plan is like this based on the previous comments.
Day 1: land at leh in the morning..check in and evening roam around Shanthi stupa, leh palace…
Day 2: visit stok, thessey, shey Sindhu ghaat for half day
Day 3: Nubra valley one day trip
    Day 4: alchi monastery
Day 5: pangong lake one day trip
Day 6: depart in morning flight.
All 5 nights in leh hotel.. what do you think of this plan. I am sure this may b little rigorous that’s why gave breaks in between long trips. Plz do modify any changes in this plan.. in addition plz do suggest we are planning for oriental gust house for stay or suggest suitable ones with central heating and good facilities not beyond 1250 per day for a couple… in the above list who will be suitable for our plan. Do they charge per day or based on the places we want to visit… please mention can charges will take approx for our plan ..thanks a ton in advance..

    • I think you mean 5 nights, 6 days. Make two day trip to Nubra Valley on day 3 and Day 4. Then make day trip to Pangong Tso. Oreintal Guest House is good place to stay and so as Panaroma Hotel next to it. As per the taxi union rates of year 2016-17 (http://devilonwheels.com/leh-ladakh-taxi-rates-2016-17/) following is the break up
      Srinagar – Leh in 2 days = 18400
      Leh Local sightseeing = 2500-3000
      Leh – Nubra Valley 2 Day = 10566
      Leh – Pangong Tso 2 Day = 10301
      Leh – Tso Moriri – Tso Kar – Sarchu – Manali 2-3 days = 29056
      Leh – Manali 2 Days = 21588
      Leh – Pangong Tso 1 Day = 8653
      Leh – Nubra Valley 1 Day = 8053
You can usually get about 10-15% discount on these taxi rates after getting in touch with the driver directly.

    hi Dheeraj,

Me and my wife are planning to visit from May14-21st. Since we are only two, can we hire a shared taxi after reaching Leh or should that be done beforehand? Im skeptical about booking in advance because of sharing options which may be only possible after reaching Leh?
    Please advise.
    TIA
    Chaitanya

    • You may need to search a bit but in May it should be available as Srinagar – Leh road will be open by that time. So, in worst case you can always go back to them and book a seat for yourself. Gelling up with people in Ladakh is more or less easy because many people travel solo and look forward to meet new people and share cultural thoughts and values over the trip.

Thanks a lot for your prompt response. So for now, can I go ahead and book a hotel first since I would need a day or two to acclimatize, and then may be worry about shared transport from day 3?

ALso, can you please comment on the below itinerary if this looks doable?

Day1 – reach Leh and acclimatize
        Day2 – Leh local sightseeing
Day3 – Leh – Turtuk and stay overnight
Day4 – Turtuk – Nubra Valley and stay overnight
        Day5- Nubra – Pangong(via Shayok valley).
        Day6 – Pangong – Leh
Day7 – Lay local shopping and remaining stuff
        Day 8 – Take off

Please suggest if this makes sense or if I can add or replace anything.
        Regards
        Chaitanya.

        • That plan looks quite nice but the only thing is Turtuk shared tours and then to Pangong Tso will be difficult to find unless you get the people with similar interest. Common shared tours are two day trip to Nubra Valley and 1-2 days trip to Pangong Tso

  39. hi Dheeraj,

we have planned our trip like this.

    July 1st in Srinagar

    July 2nd – July 9th
Day 1: Srinagar to Kargil, Kargil stay
Day 2: Kargil to Leh, Leh stay
Day 3: Leh Local, Leh stay
Day 4: Leh to Nubra, Nubra stay
Day 5: Nubra to Pangong, Pangong stay
Day 6: Pangong – Leh – Tso Moriri
Day 7: Tso Moriri to Keylong
    Day 8: Keylong to Manali

    Manali-Delhi-Hyderabad

Let me know what do you think of the plan and suggestions if any

    • Well, till Pangong Tso it looks a bit OK though it does not have any rest day in Leh. Also, you have to ensure there is company with you when travelling from Nubra Valley to Pangong Tso. Then skip Tso Moriri and easy day at Pangong Tso. Next day do Pangong Tso to Sarchu, Sarchu to Manali
