Leh – Ladakh Taxi Rates 2016 – 17

285

Its time to the start the Leh – Ladakh season 2016 – 17 and in this article today, I will be sharing the Leh – Ladakh Taxi Rates 2016 – 17 of leh taxi union 🙂 🙂 … Well, unexpectedly, this year the prices are of Leh – Ladakh taxis have not been hiked and there is a pending decision just to decide on the prices of Tempo Traveller hike. Finally, some sense has prevailed in Leh – Ladakh taxi union and with this move of not hiking the taxi prices in season 2016-17, the rocket high prices will have control to some extent 🙂 🙂 … I expected around 8-10% but the news is a pleasant surprise. You might know that, few of year ago the taxi union has separated the rates on the basis of model and make of the taxis. There are XUVs too available as taxi now, which falls in the category of Innova and Xylo… The taxi grouping along with price hikes for this year, which is same as last year, are as follow with an exception of Xylo moving to Category B:-

  • XUV, Innova and Aria (highest price tag) – 0% Hike in Charges
  • Xylo, Scorpio, Tavera, Sumo Grande, Qualis, Safari, etc.. (middle price tag) – 0% Hike in Charges
  • Eeco, Omni Van, Winger, Old Sumo, Bolero, etc.. (lowest price tag) – 0% Hike in Charges
  • Tempo Traveller / Wingers – To be decided

Below you can find the entire rate list of leh taxi union rates for 2016 – 17 for sightseeing purposes within Ladakh, towards Manali and towards Srinagar for this current year which is same as that of last year 2015 – 16. I have highlighted the important or most frequently refereed rates in the rate list below just to ease out that task for you 🙂:

Please note that, while going from Srinagar to Leh, you might need to work out few things as there have been some tensions now in taxi unions and to settle it out what they have done is that they have a transit point just before Fotu La while going to Leh from Kargil. All Leh taxis stop there and kargil taxis too. They exchange passengers and move back in respective directions. Leh taxis take passengers to Leh coming from Srinagar/Kargil and Kargil guys take passengers to Srinagar/kargil coming from Leh

  1. Hi,

Great source of info for a place like Leh.

Most of your itineraries are for summer and monsoon.

Please suggest me an itinerary for October because that is the period i plan to travel. My travel being between 6 to 14 Oct. I will arrive Leh by Air. I know it will be really cold so I will not stay in Nubra Valley or Pangong as I think night time heater and hot water is not available. But I certainly want to visit these places during the day.

    Please suggest me an itinerary.

    • Hi Sandeep, there are itineraries and plan for winter trip to Ladakh as well. Those itineraries are compltely applicable for a trip to Ladakh in October as well barring a strong warning against travel via Manali – Leh Highway. Rest you can follow any of the plan for October trip. If you flying to Leh and then coming down to Srinagar by road and flying back, it is fine. If you plan to fly in and fly out of Leh, it is also fine but try to avoid Manali – Leh Highway that late in the season.

  2. Hi Dheeraj,

We are planning to visit Leh-Ladakh in last week of June or 1st Week of July. We will be leaving from Mumbai. Following options I have thought of. Need guidance/assistance in these options and which option to go for. Also please suggest suitable time to visit Leh Ladakh. We will be having 9days in our hand. 5 weekdays and 2 weekends

    Option 1:
    1) Mumbai -> Delhi Flight
    2) Delhi -> Leh by Taxi via Manali (need help in getting this details i.e. contact number, fare etc)
    3) Sightseeing in Leh 2/3 days Pangong Tso, Khardung La Pass, Shanti Stupa etc places
    4) Stay at Pangsong Lake if required
    5) On return journey take flight directly from Leh -> Mumbai

    Option2:
    1) Mumbai -> Leh Flight directly
    2) Sightseeing in Leh 2/3 days similar to above
    3) Start return journey from Leh and take either of these routes Leh to Manali or Leh to Srinagar via Kargil and then to Jammu
    4) Flight from Jammu to Mumbai directly

    Option3:
    1) Mumbai -> Leh Flight directly
    2) Sightseeing in Leh 2/3 days similar to above
    3) Start return journey from Leh to Delhi by Taxi
    4) Delhi to Mumbai either flight or train

    Option4:
    1) Mumbai to Jammu either Flight/Train
    2) Jammu to Leh via Srinagar, Kargil
    3) Sight seeing in Leh 2/3 days
    4) Leh to Mumbai Flight or else Leh to Jammu by taxi
    5) Flight from Jammu to Mumbai directly

I had a discussion with one of my friend and he said if we go directly by flight to Leh then after having sight seeing for 2/3 days in high altitude it would be difficult to enjoy the ride from Leh to Manali since we will be almost tired as for 3-4 days we will be in high altitude. So better enjoy Delhi to Leh via Manali on road 4 days and take rest for 1 day in Leh then do sight seeing 2 days and then directly take flight to Mumbai from Leh.
We would also like to visit Kargil if possible

I think Option1 is good but you can suggest any changes in this.
    Thanks in advance.

    Regards
    Ankur

    • Hi Ankur,

Your friends clearly does not understand the acclimatization and may be mistaken on high altitude. Manali – Leh Highway journey is taxing and runs on high altitude only, so if you end up on it early unless you do not have a choice, you are making a wrong choice. Again, I am saying it in comparison only as people do Manali – Leh journeys at the start especially when they have short number of days like you.

I will highly recommend that you fly in to Leh and follow the below plan:

Day 1 | Delhi – Leh (By Flight)
      — Checkin at Hotel. Many hotels provide free pick and drop from Airport. Ask while you book them.
      — Take ample of rest as well as water or anything that keep your body hydrated enough. DO NOT OVER HYDRATE. Take ORS Soluted water or ORS – L tetra packs from home.
      — Do not over exert your body at any cost. Avoid too much up-down on stairs or avoid it in entirety, if possible.
      — After 5-6 Hrs of rest you can visit Leh Palace, Local Leh market, Shankar Gompa .
      — If you feel exerted go back to Hotel, have dinner at Hotel and take rest. Avoid any exertion. Else continue and,
      — Follow the sunset by stroll at Changspa road and have a nice dinner on varied cuisines offered in-around Changspa road.
      — Go back to hotel for overnight stay at Leh.

Day 2 | Leh Local Sighseeing + Acclimatization
      — Hire a taxi from Leh taxi stand or Hotel whichever suits you.
      — Bargain with taxi driver and you can refer the thread for a comprehensive list of drivers: List of Taxi Drivers for Ladakh – Srinagar – Leh – Manali
      — Take his inputs if you feel reasonable and if required modify the plan accordingly but should suits you best.
      — Ask him to be with you guys starting first day itself, if required and charged reasonable else do it at your own.
      — Again DO NOT over exert and take little steps and slow walks only.
      — If feeling OK then do Local sightseeing. To know the about the places to visit check the link: Travel Guide for Local Sightseeing of Leh Town in Ladakh
      — Do not use stairs at any of these places just to see them as it will exert your body much more.
      — Overnight at Leh

      Day 3 | Leh – Khardung La – Diskit – Hunder
      — Head for Nubra Valley and stay overnight at Hunder / Diskit
      — On the way enjoy a cup of soup at Highest Motorable Pass (as claimed) Khardung La
      — Diskit has monasteries with tallest lord Buddha statue and Hunder has sand dunes and bacterian camel safari

      Day 4 | Hunder / Diskit – Sumur – Panamik – Sumur – Khardung La – Leh
      — Sumur has a famous monastery to check out and Panamik has hot water springs
      — Overnight at Leh

Day 5 | Leh – Hemis Monastery – Pangong Tso Lake
      — Cover either of Hemis, Thicksey and Shey on the go towards Pangong Tso
      — Overnight at Pangong Tso (Spangmik or Lukung)

Day 6 | Pangong Tso Lake – Thicksey Monastery – Shey Palace – Leh
      — Cover either of Hemis, Thicksey and Shey on return to Leh
      — Overnight at Leh

      Day 7 | Leh – Taglang La – Pang – Sarchu/Jispa
      — Try to start early in the day so that you reach archu/Jispa where the accommodation options are better than Pang
      — Overnight at Sarchu or Pang

      Day 8 | archu/Jispa – Baralacha La – Keylong – Rohtang Pass – Manali
      — On the way cover Suraj Tal, Deepak Tal which are on the road sides only
      — Overnight at Manali

Day 9 | Manali – Chandigarh and fly back to Mumbai from Chandigarh

  3. Hello, I have one more question. I would like to go from Leh to Pangong lake and stay there one night, using a taxi. According to the price list I can hire a taxi for two days on that route, but I do not understand what it means. Does this mean that the driver of the car after a night on the lake will be waiting for me and take me back to Leh?

The same applies also to other routes. In the list are also trips for three days, and on this route can then book your accommodation for himself and the driver will take me there and the next day we go further?

    Thank you for the information

    • Pawel, it means exactly what you want. Taxi will be there with you overnight and take you back from Pangong Tso to Leh on Day 2. Yes, the same applies to other route as well. 3 day trips are for routes which are quite longer or demand more time. And yes it means that driver / taxi will be with you and take you back to Leh after all sightseeing. Driver takes care of their own accommodation and food. Also, he will help you with accommodation as well.

  4. MAYANK JAIN on

    Hi Dheeraj,

I am planning to Ladakh in first week of June.
    My itenary is as follows:
    Day1 : Manali to Sarchu(by car)
Day 2 : Sarchu to Tso Moriri(by car)
Day 3 : Tso Moriri to Leh(by car)
Day 4 : Local sightseeing(still not decided how to roam around)
    Day 5 : Leh to Pangong.Overnight stay there(by bike)
    Day 6 : Pangong to Nubra.Overnight stay there(by bike)
    Day 7 : Nubra to Leh(by bike)
    Day 8 : Leh to Kargil(by car)
    Day 9 : kargil to Srinagar(by car)

So by car we are travelling 5 days.
I talked to a travel agent from ladakhtourism. He quotes 54500/- for car for these 5 days.
He said manli-sarchu-tso moriri , he will give car with himachal pradesh number plate.
From Tso-moriri , he will give another car with Jk number plate.

Can you suggest is this itenary looks fine and can be covered.
And are these quotes are reasonable or too high.

    Thanks,
    Mayank

      • MAYANK JAIN on

Hmm..it looks quite convincing not to go Tso Moriri while travelling from Manli-Leh.
But is it safe to travel from Srinagar to leh in June first week?
If yes, then can you suggest an itenary for Srinagar-Leh-Manali considering all the places i mentioned in my first comment.
And any contacts of taxi drivers from Srinagar to Leh and then Leh to Manali?

        Thanks,
        Mayank

    Thanks in Advance

    • Karan, you are trying to do too much in too little time on hand. Zoom car will not be allowed for sightseeing in Ladakh. Manali – Leh Highway and Zanskar Valley more or less will be closed unless there is less snowfall this year. It usually opens by end of May or first week of June, Sach Pass will be closed in May for sure.

  7. Hi Dheeraj

I am planning to go to Ladakh in April 2017. We are group of 8 people.
Do you have any sugestion which car we should take? because i think innova will be enough for us or any 8 seater car (including driver) will be enough for us because we have medium body and we don’t mind to be to squished in one car but is it possible to do that? or is there any regulations that one car has to be XXX passengers?

and What month do they open Manali Leh road? is possible to pass the road from Leh to Manali in Middle of May?

    thank you soo much..

    Rani

  8. Me with 2 friends will be at Srinagar at 8 March 2017 and plan to go to Ladakh straight away from Srinagar. Can you advise me, what is the best route to go to Ladakh from Srinagar? Is it better use Bus Express or Train or Taxi? And how much is the cost? Thanks

  9. Nilavra Ghosh on

    Hi Dheeraj ,
Leh to Tso Moriri and back to Leh same day is possible ? I know it’s very hectic but do people do this ?

  10. Nilavra Ghosh on

    Hi Dheeraj ,
If I want to reserve private taxi from manali up to Leh and stay there for 7/8 days and visit, Pangong Tso, Nubra, Turtuk, Hunder etc, Tso moriri, leh local sightseeing and finally drop at Manali or srinagar

What will be the cost of the car per day ?

    • As per the taxi union rates of year 2016-17 (http://devilonwheels.com/leh-ladakh-taxi-rates-2016-17/) following is the break up

      Srinagar – Leh in 2 days = 18400

      Leh – Nubra Valley 2 Day = 10566
      Leh – Pangong Tso 2 Day = 10301
      Leh – Tso Moriri – Tso Kar – Sarchu – Manali 2-3 days = 29056
      Leh – Manali 2 Days = 21588
      Leh – Pangong Tso 1 Day = 8653
      Leh – Nubra Valley 1 Day = 8053

You can usually get about 10-15% discount on these taxi rates after getting in touch with the driver directly.

      • Hardip Dodiya on

        Hi Dheeraj,

We have Almost 10day to 12 day after reaching Leh in Aug-17 end week or Sep-17 1st Week. want to tour end in Manali.

only want to know Any bike rented facility available in leh like we hire bike on rent in leh and allowed to drop bike at Manali? if any facility available then let us know. so we can assured about it after reaching leh we search it by our own.

as per your guidence we drop plan to start bike ride from manali first.

        Best Regards
        Hardip Dodiya

        • Hello Hardip,

You have good amount of time to explore Ladakh. For renting bikes in Leh – Ladakh along with current Bike Union Prices, you can check the DoW Community thread: Leh – Ladakh Bike Rental Rates 2016 – 17 & Rental Shops

The one way bike rental is quite costly and leave a big dent in pocket for you, sometimes like 12K for just the pickup from Manali. Be sure if you are ready to make that investment or not or if at all it is worth the money spent. My suggestion is unless you are hard core biker and cannot live up the passion of biking, it is not wise to spend that much money just for the pickup of bike.

  11. Vandita Bansal on

    Hello Dheeraj,

Firstly I would like to thank you for all the information and experience you have shared. Me and my husband are planning for a trip to Leh In April 2017. I have a small concern regarding our return flights. We have an early morning flight from Leh to Mumbai. So would we get transport easily at around 4-5am?

    Thanks,
    Vandita

    • Vandita, I am not sure about availability of taxi options in Mumbai. I can suggest you on Ladakh though. I am not sure which flight lands in Ladakh at 4 AM or even 5 AM. Most of them land after 5-6 AM AFAIK, though I may be wrong. There are no taxis which are present to avail, hence you will have to either arrange a pickup by talking to a taxi driver in advance or ask your hotel in case booked to pick you up

      • Vandita Bansal on

Hi Dheeraj, I appreciate your quick reply. Sorry for the confusion but I think you got me wrong. We want to take a flight of 8:20AM from Ladakh to Mumbai. So I wanted to know the transport in Ladakh only :). Would I get taxis available easily in Ladakh or I’ll need to pre-book it?

        • Yes, you can go over to taxi stand and get a taxi by that time easily. Otherwise, the person/taxi with whom you guys will be on Ladakh tour, you can ask him to come and pick you guys up for the drop. Sometimes, drivers also provide complimentary drop to airports.

  12. Ashish Poddar on

    Hi Dheeraj,
We (4 friends) have planned Jan 22 to Jan 27 for a winter trip to Ladakh. My itinerary is as follows…
22 jan – Acclimatize and few local sights
23 jan – Early morning start to Hunder via Panamik and by late evening back at Leh.
24 jan – 6am start for Pangogng, spending an hour at pangong and move towards hanle via Chushul. (night stay at hanle)
25 jan – Late start from hanle to Tso Moriri. (night stay at Karzok)
26 jan – Again late start in the morning to Leh
27 jan – morning return flight.

My query is, what would be the total taxi fare for this itinerary (approx) though already had a word with Rigzin as I have traveled with him earlier also, but not discussed the fare for this itinerary.
Will it be difficult to make our way to Hanle via Chushul?

I know my itinerary may feel rushed but, as you know most of these places will have severe cold and deserted feel hence, I have kept few hours to enjoy and click these places.

    Thanks in advance.
    Regards/Ashish

    • Ashish, you are trying to do too much in too little days. Winters and acclimatization do not go hand in hand. Your body needs more time which unfortunately you do not seem to have. First two days after landing in Leh, I will always suggest that you go with only rest and acclimatization. Then you are left with just three days. Do Leh – Tangtse, Tangtse – Pangong Tso – Chusul – Tsaga – Loma – Nyoma, Nyoma – Tso Moriri – Chumathang – Leh. Very hectic but doable.

      • Ashish Poddar on

Thanks Dheeraj, but my 2 main queries remain unanswered. I completely respect your opinion and view on my rushed up itinerary but unfortunately due to my limited days I am taking a chance of one day acclimatization. To the max I can drop Hunder from my itinerary if AMS becomes an issue but, Hanle is one place which I dont want to miss this time. (already done a winter trip last to last year without hanle). So, if you can pl put some light on the accessibility of Hanle and required documents and the travel cost would be great.
        Regards

  13. Hi Dheeraj,

I was going through your detailed article, thank you very much for covering each and every points for us.
We are willing to visit with my family ( wife and 5 yrs old daughter) Manali-Leh via highway and return via flight any time in 2017 for 14/15 days.
I would like to request if you can guide us a convenient and economic travel plan (considering age of my daughter), I may do required arrangements in advance.

    Thank you in advance,
    Looking forward a prompt response.

    Satya

    • Firstly, I will suggest you that please plan it in other direction as going via Srinagar – Leh Highway will be much much easier on your body and help you acclimatize to the high altitude of Manali – Leh Highway. Also, it allows you to enjoy the beauty of Manali – Leh by splitting the journey almost evenly in two days which is very difficult in the other direction. Thirdly, it will allow you to fit Tso Moriri lake into the itinerary in better way. You can read more reasons on the link here

You can check a very balanced and most common itinerary for Leh – Ladakh followed by many travellers including me at the link here for 13-14 days: Most Common Itinerary for Leh – Ladakh.

You can check the nice, preferred list of accommodation options in entire Leh – Ladakh (Leh, Nubra Valley, Pangong Tso, Tso Moriri) including moderate (cheap budget hotels as well) in the series of articles starting on the link here

For the leh – ladakh taxi union rate list 2016 – 17 including the contacts of some reliable taxi drivers within Leh – Ladakh, check the link here. You can get about 12-15% of discount by directly getting in touch with drivers and of course, talking in person rather on phone always help in bargaining more.

For the list of good restaurants in Leh – Ladakh or eateries or food joints where food is enjoyed by many travellers including me, you can check the link here: List of Good Restaurants in Leh – Ladakh | Restaurant Reviews

  14. How the pricing works if we plan.. Leh – Nubra – Pangong Tso (Via WariLa) – Tso Moriri – Leh. And if its Nubra will the Taxi Cost also bear the cost of Hunder and other sightseeing?

  15. Hi everybody, we’re just back from an amazing journey to Ladakh and we want to leave our feedback after following DHEERAJ SHARMA advices.
Beeing non indians, we put in contact with one of the drivers of the list, the second one: Chamba Rinchen.
We wrote to him on whatsapp and than by email and we agreed a price for our whole itinerary of 9 days.
Now, to be precise, Chamba is not driving at the moment but he found a driver for us, a young but nice and clever guy called Gelek and everything went just perfectly.
Our suggestion is to add emails to the list of names and number as from abroad nobody would ever call an indian mobile number (often it could also be very difficult to understand each other by phone).

    • Awesome to know that !! Glad to know that DoW helped you have a wonderful trip to Ladakh. Well, most of the drivers do not know how to operate internet and dont have emails. Hence, we don’t have emails for them. However, we will start asking people to share if they do so. Thank you for the suggestion.

  16. Rahul Joshi on

sir, what are the best travel modes from leh to manali and how much it cost. we are planning to hire a bike in leh but we dont know that how much it cost and if we want to drop it in manali that what are the charges of that. we also want to know about that where should we stay as we will reach leh on 13 oct 2016 and have to reach back to chandigarh on 22 night.
    Could you please help us.

      • Rahul Joshi on

sir, we are not going through manali leh highway. we will reach directly to leh on 13 from delhi by flight. in return we have to choose manali option because of present condition of shrinagar. thats what the reason i was asking for return journey from leh to manali. So I was asking for a suggested bike rental in leh which provides bikes which we may drop in manali and what it will cost to us. as we have to reach chandigarh on 22 anyhow.

        • Rahul, it is not recommended at all to travel on Manali – Leh Highway at that time of the year. It is calling for trouble and you may end up getting starnded in the middle of no where in case snowfall happens from few days to few weeks to 7 months.

    Hi Dheeraj,

we are regular readers of DOW posts. Recently we successfully completed our leh ladakh trip (from 21st august to 3rd september, 2016). All the tips which you had given were very very helpful.Thank you so very much to you and DOW team.

    priti.

  19. Hi Dheeraj,
Its so nice of you to help all in such a wonderful way. Thanks from all of us for guiding in unknown destinations.
I and my friend are reaching leh on 2nd November at around 11 am and leaving back on 8th November morning. We want to see pangong lake and nubra valley for sure. Can u kindly suggest an itinerary for the same so that it’s not very exhausting and can enjoy the best of the time and ladakh.
    Thanks
    Varun

      • Thanks Dheeraj for a quuck reply. Just wanted to confirm whether hotels or guesthouses would be open at Turtuk and Tangste at that period of November and will I get space without pre reservations. Can u suggest any good place there ?
        Thanks

        • Only home stays will be available in Turtuk, so do not expect much from there. In Tangtse, Yakmik Changla guest house should be running.

  20. Hi Dheeraj,

We are 4 travelers planning to travel to Leh to experience other side of Leh which is the pure winters of Leh and also to attend Thiksay Gustor Festival which happens for 2 days – 17 & 18 November.
I have two question for you 🙂

    1. These taxi rates mentioned here are for 2016-17 sure? I know you have mentioned in there. But still wanted to confirm because everywhere on the pictures it is mentioned 2015-16

    2. Do you think this will also apply in November when I go?
Will drivers still take you to that routes if weather is nice?

    Thanks

    • Hi Palak,

      1. Yes, it because this year no rates were hiked as mentioned in the article and hence, same rates were published.
      2. You will have a window of may be 5% more negotiation with the drivers. Drivers will take you to these places in case the roads are open and safe for travel.

      • Thanks Dheeraj for the reply. Appreciate!

        1) Do you know anyone who has traveled Leh in November? What is their experience like? I was skeptical earlier but now I am sure to travel in November. Want to do what others don’t do 😉
Especially when we know that nothing can go wrong by staying just in Leh city and enjoy the winter experience if Khardungla or Pangong or Nubra is closed!
What is your view on this? Shouldn’t be any problem right? I called few drivers from the list that you have mentioned. I also mentioned your name. And they too were offering me the deals. That made me more sure to travel in November.

        2) P.s I am getting 6 Night package with stay, meals, and Innova to all the monasteries of Leh, Pangong, Khardungla, Nubra Valley, Diskit & Hunder & Alchi Villages, Hemis etc etc….+ airport transfers for Rs 14000 per person! Is this package expensive or okay in your view?

        Thanks once again!

        • Hi Palak,

          1. If you are OK with cold conditions and can plan your trip well (of course DoW is here 😉 you can surely make a trip to Ladakh during such a time. I have made several trips to these places in winters/off season and there is a different charm to it. With Ladakh USP almost being destroyed completely in season time, I prefer traveling in such odd months only now. However, the life is beautiful but it comes with challenges like sometimes it gets nippier and you can walk around much, you prefer to stay in hotel/guesthouse or homestay to ogle at the views. The shops and restaurants are mostly closed with handful being open, means you walk more to reach the ones which are open. Tourists are less which for some are blessing and for some they need a happening environment around (no idea why ;)) but that’s another thing. Food is very much limited to basic, Dal, mix veg, potatoes, rice. However, this gives you authentic experience of such places with some clear blue skies topped with white snowy mountains and chances of experiencing snowfall too. All the roads in Ladakh remain open all round the year barring few days of heavy snowfall. So, no problems with that too. Check out one of such of this journey: http://devilonwheels.com/khardung-la-pass-where-snow-galore-ladakh-2012/

          2. It is better to do it yourself, to have better control and hand over the money directly to the local which helps them grow rather than introducing any middlemen.

        • Thanks Dheeraj.
Agree with your points on going off season but to face the challenges at the same time. But we are up for it 🙂 🙂
I will update once my trip comes closer on the descion taken.
          Once again DOW thanks! 🙂

        • Mukesh Kathad on

          thanks Palak,

hi dheeraj,i saw taxi charges from leh. where one day charges was more than 8000rs for some places… isnt it grst complete pakckage on 14, 000

  21. Dear Dheeraj,

We are a couple and planning a 10 night trip from 16 Sep onwards. I have prepared an itinerary as follows:-

    Day 1 (16 Sep) : Arrival Leh
    Day 2 : At Leh
    Day 3 : Leh-Diksit/Hunder
    Day 4 : Diksit-Turtuk-Diksit
    Day 5 : Nubra-Pangong.
Day 6 : Pangong – Tsomori ri via chumathang
Day 7 : Tsomori ri – Leh via Tso Kar
    Day 8 : Leh-Kargil via Dah Hanu
    Day 9 : Kargil-Lamayuru
    Day 10 : Lamayuru-Leh
    Day 11 (26 Sep) : Departure

Does this itinerary sound OK? Any recommendations?

Is it better to pre-book for this tour (i.e. pre book a package through a travel agent etc) or will it be cheaper if we did our bookings for hotel and vehicle it after reaching Leh and from destination to destination. Are walk in accommodation available at all other places other than Leh?

    Kindly advise.

    • Yes, this looks OK. It would be more better if you do Kargil circuit before your rest of the circuit to make perfect sense out of it. Do the booking on the spot that late in the season.

  22. Alson Falcao on

Hi Dheeraj, Thank you for all the information that you share. Got to know many things that are missing on other websites (individual reviews). Its last minute plans, my wife and me are planning to go to Leh. Hope you you could help suggest me to choose from the options i have considered.
Option 1 : Mumbai – Srinagar by flight on 03/09/2016 > Hit the road from Srinagar to Leh with halt at Kargil > Fly Leh to Mumbai on return (08-09-2016)
Option 2 : Mum – Leh (roundtrip flight)

With limited time in hand hope you will be able to suggest. Also do we have to pay return charges to the driver if am driving from srinagar to leh (one way) and what will be the approximate cost. and do you suggest hotel stay or home stay?

    Regards;
    Alson Falcao

      • Hey Alson, I was in Srinagar on 10th Aug, just got back from a lifetime trip to Leh.
Situation in Kashmir doesn’t actually affect the tourists i can tell you for sure.
All tourist cars leave the city post midnight. Once you reach Srinagar airport, you will get many taxi drivers willing to offer a ride only post midnight.
It is better that you check-in to a hotel for few hours and if u have time visit few places too, like Daal lake.., then leave for journey ahead post midnight.
Also, a word of caution, its in your best interest not to discuss the current situation with your driver. It will for sure result in a heated argument.

        • Dear Bhavana,

We also planned a trip from Srinagar to Leh, Unfortunately our flight got cancelled. So i think Kashmir is still on fire.

        • Personally speaking, things can go wrong in such a situation anyday. Hence, it is always a safe bet not to take that route unless it settles down completely.

        • Alson Falcao on

Thank you Bhavna for the update. as we had planned a trip only for 6 days so we took a direct flight to Leh. Thank you again for your reply. Have a good day.

    • Alson, you will have to fly in directly to Leh and come back from Leh. I see you have just 5 days in hand and you can follow the below plan:

For the leh – ladakh taxi union rate list 2016 – 17 including the contacts of some reliable taxi drivers within Leh – Ladakh, check the link here. You can get about 12-15% of discount by directly getting in touch with drivers and of course, talking in person rather on phone always help in bargaining more.

        Hi Dheeraj,

Apologize for the late reply !!!\
we would really like to thank you for the itenary that your share with detailed information on the travel and stay. It really helped.
As planned we reached MUM – Leh on 3rd September 2016 aroud 7am. Our Innova driver Naseer was welcoming and really took care of us during the entire trip.
We stayed in a guest house as we wanted to experience the culture closely. our Guest house (Mikza Guest House) was around 15 mins drive and was located near The Zen Hotel.
Everyone gave us a warm welcome with some quawah tea and some breakfast.
We took rest as planned and after lunch moved out to visit the local sights.
We made sure we drank enough water and carried ORSL along.
2nd day we started out journey for Nubra. The drive was amazing and made stops at Khardongla Pass. We were fortunate to experience a bit of snowfall for lunch again we got to savour Thukpa and Thentuk with some Namkin chai with a family our driver knew.
On our way to Numbra we stopped for ATV / Ranger ride and sand dunes for camel ride.
Maggi and Bread omlette all the way 🙂
next day we moved to Pangong tso. Here we planned to stay overnight to see the sunrise.
Thank to my driver, i got to drive his Innova for a couple of kilometers. (and my trip was a complete satisfaction 🙂
The aunty at the guest house was so sweet that she accompanied us to the market to make sure we get all that we want.
We bought crockery set for our new house. Some good Ladaki material for the ladies in our house.
        and plenty tshirts for friends.
Entire trip our driver made sure we were alright and carried a oxygen cynlinder just incase if we needed the same.
We were really happy with the trip. Thank you Dheeraj for making it easier to plan.
Sharing the contacts for our driver and the guest house aunty. Please if any one meets them do share my regards.

  23. Hi, this is a review of our driver Rigzin namgyal cell 09622950842 you can whatsapp him too.
First and foremost, he is a very safe driver – overtook other vehicles only when it was totally safe and sounded the horn on every blind turn on the scary mountainous roads. He steered the car skillfully and carefully over parts of the roads that were severely damaged. Overall a fantastic driver.

But more than that, he came across as a great human being and a companion over the duration of our trip. Extremely well mannered and courteous, he always arrived a few minutes early before the scheduled time, well attired and the car spanking clean. When we decided to stop for photographs (and we did that quite frequently), didn’t show the slightest irritation on the duration of our halts – in fact, he guided us about the best spots and locations to take our snaps.

While proceeding to Pangong Lake, about 20 km to the destination, a huge landslide had taken place and the road was closed. We had to abandon his vehicle, walk about 200 meters and board another vehicle on the other side. There was a patch of muddy slush which had to be crossed and I got stuck upto my knees! His help that day (and also on the next day when we had to trek the same patch) was just invaluable.

This must also be said. We visited a few places that were strictly speaking not a part of the budgeted itinerary – local marketplace, the Shanti Stupa, Hemis and Thiksay monasteries. He did not charge an extra penny and in fact asked if we wanted to visit Shey Palace as well!

The one thing (and that’s NOT a negative) I would say that he doesn’t talk much. Perhaps it is due to his shy nature; it is also equally likely that he wishes us to have the most time to ourselves given his courteous nature. All in all, I have no hesitation in saying that he was a crucial factor in our Laddakh trip turning out to be such a joyous one. If we happen to visit again, we shall seek him out to accompany us.

    • Prateek, there you need three taxis:

      1. The one that takes you to Kargil. You can connect with a Kargil taxi driver to pick you and drop up to Zanskar. Only Kargil taxis can go to Zanskar. Costs around 8K.
      2. If you get a drop to Kargil from Leh guy taxi, then get a kargil taxi to reach Padum. Costs about 14-15K
      3. Padum sightseeing costs around 3500-5000 per day in Padum taxi.
      4. Same Padum taxi can drop you up to Leh but up to Kargil you wil be charged 15K and then from there back to Leh another 7-8K

    4) If you have any contact for Delhi to Manali travel agencies.( which will only provide the cabs not package)

    Thanks in advance.
    Partha

    • Hello Partha,

Your plan does not obey acclimatization principles and you guys will be bound to get hit with AMS. I will not recommend doing above. Avoid stay at Sarchu and make a stay at Jispa. Then next morning leave early to reach Leh by evening. Then rest full day in Leh before going over Khardung La pass to Nubra Valley. From there it is better to come back to Leh and do two day trip to Pangong Tso. Drop Hanle and Tso moriri for this time.

@ Dheeraj Sharma ji : I m karma sonam a driver from leh ladakh taxi union, my motto (KINDNESS IS MY RELIGION). I am in DoW community since long time so this is to inform you that I served my best to those tourists whom I traveled with. And I am the 3rd driver in your list and I got many good comments from the tourists whom I served. In last week of July 2016 I have a tourist called Mr Ankit Soni from (MP state) and we were supposed to travel from Manali to Srinagar (actually) but a critical situation arise in Srinagar randomly so I couldn’t dropped them to Srinagar. But I arranged another taxi from Srinagar to drop them from Kargil to Srinagar. But later heard from my tourist that during their journey that kashmiri driver behaved rudely with them n even drunk when driving as I never expected that from him being a senior driver. Later I apologized Mr Ankit Soni (Tourist) through mail n by call as well. Its all happened because of the circumstances but because of that Kashmiri driver my whole reputation in your site has ruined. So Kindly consider and put me back in your trusted driver list. And if you want to know more about me, you can ask from that tourist himself (Mr Ankit Soni) and Dorjee the owner of Hanley home stay. Your kind consideration will help me a lot in my future business and your quick response is appreciated from me and my family.MY DETAILS:- KARMA SONAM PHONE NUMBER, 09419215110 BSNL POST PAID OR 09906991011 AIRTEL PREPAID, EMAIL ID karmasonam947@gmail.com

    • Julley Karma ji!! It is great to hear from you and I can understand the sorry situation that might have happened once. I am sure you will be careful with other drivers in future and Ankit also mailed me about the same. He also feels that you deserve a second chance and do not want to get your name moved from the list but wanted to be extra cautious. Since, you have apologized openly on the forum and accepted the situation, I am sure everyone will understand your honesty and will consider it. Knowing Ladakhis for last 7 years, I am sure this must have been those once in a while issue.

Thank you for letting everyone of us know about it.

      • Jullay Dheeraj-ji,

Karma was our taxi driver in June 2016.

We’re from Australia and were first timers in India. I’ve been wanting to travel to Ladakh for a few years so it has been a dream for me. Looking for a good taxi driver was clearly the most important decision to make.

I received Karma’s contact through your listing. His position on #3 is more than well deserved. Allow me to tell you why.

Karma is very friendly, approachable, and is always out to help his passengers. He puts tourists’ needs ahead of his own. I joked about travelling from Leh to Manali in one day and he said, if we wanted to, he could make it. We’ve always felt safe throughout the entire trip. My friend felt ill in one of the days of our travels and Karma made sure he was not getting worse. I could tell he cared.

On our first day, he was stuck in traffic and was unable to pick us up from the airport. He quickly arranged for a friend to pick us up to our accommodation. His friends were very professional, courteous and friendly. When we met Karma for the first time at our accommodation, the first thing he did was to apologise profusely for missing our pick up, even though we were not even worried about it!

He has tourists’ best interests in his own heart. He made sure we always had enough water, allow ample breaks and make sure we don’t get hungry. When in Leh, I asked him where I can find chhang, because I wanted to try some. Days later, when we were in Lamayuru, he came to us on our restaurant table with a bottle of chhang from the local restaurant (he had asked them for me!). I asked him to join us while we shared the chhang and some good conversation.

Of note, he helped us when it turns out I could not be granted a Permit to Pangong. It is easy for anyone to take financial advantage of foreigners in this situation, but he did not. Instead, he facilitated in making other plans for us even though payment did not go to him.

Kindness is really his religion. He is one of the few people I know who practices what he preaches. Karthik87 (http://devilonwheels.com/india/ladakh-zanskar-travel-guides/listof-taxi-drivers-for-ladakh-srinagar-leh-manali-t353-130.html#p22528) has previously commented that Karma is a very good human being and I cannot agree more. I truly believe that he is not the type of person who would willingly allow an irresponsible or rude driver to take care of his own tourists.

I feel upset that a senior taxi driver has done such horrible things to taint Karma’s good reputation on your website. It should be the Kashmir driver that should be punished, not Karma.

We have very fond memories of our trip. One of the biggest factors was because of Karma. I still keep in touch with Karma and am always very happy to hear from him.

A very long post, but I think Karma and his future passengers deserves to hear this from someone who has actually spent a week with him.

        Cheers,
        Phil

  27. Hello,

I saw rates you attached. Very useful. Please, I have a question.

Are these rates (price) for whole taxi car or there rate are for one person only?

    Many thanks

    Martin

    • No Martin, these rates are for the whole taxi. A taxi can accommodate 5 at comfort and 6 in a tight position. So, per person rates will be divided by 5/6 people in car. Also, these rates are by taxi union and drivers can also provide 10-15% discounts on top of these rates.

  28. Hi Dhiraj,

    • Hi Ragini,

With just 6 days of trip, you should follow below plan:

      — Ask him to be with you guys starting first day itself, if required and charged reasonable else do it at your own.

      • Hi Dheeraj,
Thank you so much for the reply. Will definitely drop the feedback of my journey to leh.
Just wanted to know if any sort of camping is possible over a night. If you may suggest that. Just fancy them a lot.
And another is the confluence of those two Rivers. Beautiful must be. But I guess the days are limiting the visit to these sites?
Looking forward for your reply 🙂

        • You can do camping in Nubra Valley instead of staying in hotel. Also, confluence can be visited on Day 2 if you are feeling good and had good night sleep.

      Hi Ragini,

I read your post about travel to Leh , We 4 ladies travelling to leh From 10 august to 23 Aug.2016 It would nice meet up and plan some journey together to share the travel cost If you are interested Then pls email me at sofeas@gmail.com

      • Hey girls,

I have recently returned from a trip to leh, just thought of recommending our driver, Tsewang Dorjay 09419888805.

Really humble and down to earth person. His professional ethics made us all awestruck. He will never be late for any given pickup time. he wont get irritated for delay you make clicking pictures. He wont aim at making money from your hotel bookings and leave all decisions to you, he will just give you info.
Most of all he is a part of Green Ladakh group, so he promotes cleanliness and shares lot of knowledge about the local situations.

  29. Hai dheeraj ji

We 4 from kerala want to visit srinagar leh ladakh in September 2-10. Just booked flights to reach srinagar 2nd morning 10am and return on 11th morning from leh. No bookings other than sinagar stay on 2nd done yet.

How will be availability of stay options these days on route? Have to pre book in leh nubra and pangong ?

And taxi or self driven car better? To book early?

Please can you suggest a plan to cover major places according our dates starting on 3rd from srinagar. To leave on 11th morning from leh airport.

Single taxi for whole trip or seperate booking will be convenience financially?

    • Most of the time by searching couple of places here and there, it will be available in all over Ladakh. Self driven cars are not available up there so you have to take the taxi only. You should book a single taxi only.

      Day 1 | Delhi – Srinagar
      — Enjoy walk around Dal lake and may be Shikara ride as well
      — If you have time then check out, floating market, Shalimar Garden.
      — Overnight at Srinagar

      Day 2 | Srinagar – Sonamarg – Zozi La – Drass – Kargil
      — Enjoy the vistas enroute
      — Have late drunch meal at Drass is you are a vegetarian as sometimes it gets difficult to find veg. food at Kargil
      — Overnight at Kargil

      Day 3 | Kargil – Lamayuru – Leh
      — Cover Mulbekh Maitrey, Lamayuru Moanstery, Lunar Landscapes
      — On the way you can also see Gurudwara Pather Sahib, Magnetic Hills, Confluence at Nimmu
      — Overnight at Leh

Day 4 | Leh Local Sightseeing + Acclimatization
      — To know the about the places to visit check the link: Travel Guide for Local Sightseeing of Leh Town in Ladakh
      — Overnight at Leh

      Day 5 | Leh – Khardung La – Diskit – Hunder
      — Head for Nubra Valley and stay overnight at Hunder / Diskit
      — On the way enjoy a cup of soup at Highest Motorable Pass (as claimed) Khardung La
      — Diskit has monasteries with tallest lord Buddha statue and Hunder has sand dunes and bacterian camel safari

      Day 6 | Hunder / Diskit – Sumur – Panamik – Sumur – Khardung La – Leh
      — Sumur has a famous monastery to check out and Panamik has hot water springs
      — Overnight at Leh

Day 7 | Leh – Hemis Monastery – Pangong Tso Lake
      — Cover either of Hemis, Thicksey and Shey on the go towards Pangong Tso
      — Overnight at Pangong Tso (Spangmik or Lukung)

Day 8 | Pangong Tso Lake – Thicksey Monastery – Shey Palace – Leh
      — Cover either of Hemis, Thicksey and Shey on return to Leh
      — Overnight at Leh

Day 9 | Rest day at Leh to enjoy local culture and some shopping OR Monastery tour OR you can do tour to Sham Valley
      — Monastery tour may include Hemis, Thicksey, Stakna and Shey monasteries. They come on the route of Pangong Tso but as you will be doing day trip, it will be a bit hectic to include them on that day only.
      — Sham Valley include Alchi, Likir, Basgo Palace, Magnetic Hills, Confluence at Nimmu, Gurudwara Pather Sahib
      — Overnight at Leh

      Day 10 | Fly back

      • Thank you for a detailed reply..

Thank you very much.. This will be our master plan..

One more doubt, if single taxi booked for whole trip starting from srinagar what will we do with taxi on rest days..

And if available can we try bus from srinagar to leh trip? Is it enjoyable comparing taxi trip.?

Thank you dear. This was more than what we expected..

        • I think there is some issue with JK-10 vehicles not been allowed in srinagar.
It would be better if you took a pre-paid taxi from srinagar airport to Sonmarg, and have another booked for the rest of your journey.
this is how we travelled just last week.

I will like to recommend Tsewang Dorjay 09419888805 once again here.

You will get really cheap stay options directly there. In fact most online prices were triple than what we got there actually.

      • How about the situation in Srinagar now..
Our flight ticket to srinagar is non refundable..
What plan will work actually now?
What to do? to reach insrinagar on 2nd morning and return back on 11 from leh was our plan

        • I will not recommend to travel from Srinagar based on current situation. Some airlines are refunding the tickets AFAIK. Check with them by calling them.

    Hi Dheeraj.
Are the permits to Marismek La is being issued for this season(2016). We are planning to visit there in September by bike. Thanks

  31. Hi Dheeraj,

We were able to successfully complete the srinagar-leh-manali circuit covering nubra, pangong and tsomoriri lakes. Thanks to you for reviewing the itinerary and suggesting changes.
I could get hold of Rigzin, but somehow we were provided with other drivers as he was totally occupied. As you said,he is definitely a fun loving chap. But it doesn’t hold good with all the drivers he provides. We were provided with 4 different drivers for the trip.Ali and Gulam Nabi were good enough.Sonam was a gem of a person who even took us to his home and introduced the Ladakhi culture.we bow for the hospitality.

However during next part(major drives) of the trip we were accompanied by lafzung, who had great driving skills(hats off to his skills),but at times turned out to be very rude to us.we weren’t so comfortable with him.Probably you would be the better person to provide a feedback to Rigzin on this one.We wish the drivers communicate well and be friendly to us-which according to me is very important.

I also want you to recommend sonam (Rigzin’s friend) in your blogs as he also deserves to be on the top of your list 🙂

    • Thank you so much Vibha, this is a ggreat feedback and I am sure will be helpful to others. I will include it in the post. Do you happen to have the contact number of Sonam?

      • Hi Dheeraj,

Thanks for responding to this.Yes I do have Sonam’s num and address. Also he has a guest house ready at the Gompa village–named ‘Apna Ghar’.I am sure that would turn out to be one of the great places to stay in Ladakh, away from the market’s hustle bustle. Please find the details below. This guy definitely needs recommendation at your site. Thats the minimum I could do for the hospitality he and his family showered. He can provide stay as well as taxi for the tours in Ladakh. He Owns a black Innova.

        Sonam Angchok
        Apna ghar
        Gompa Village
        Leh

        Bangalore

        • Vibbha, I know a Sonam who is with Rigzin always and always travel with me because mostly we need two taxis so Sonam ji and Rigzin ji both are are always with me. But he owns a black Xylo with a DoW sticker on back, you sure it was Innova?

        • Hi Dheeraj,

Yes Sonam owned a black Innova.( I do have a pic of him standing beside that). As far as I remember,I didnt not see the DOW sticker. You should be able to find if its the same person by the phone num that I shared. All that I know about him is he is an ex army man, wife is a teacher and stays in Gompa village with his family. He knows you by name,we did talk about you,as he said that Rigzin is a great friend of yours. But looks like he also needs some help in getting little more familiarised online.

          Thanks,
          Vibha

  32. Akash Agrawal on

I would like you to add Mr. Stanzin’s number to the list of very good and reliable drivers. We were 5, 2 in his taxi(brand new Innova) and 3 on their own bikes, he helped us a lot with everything small and big. Even arranged a bornfire when it was remotely not possible. A very sweet, down to earth guy who drives very cautiously. He even helped us(car and bikes) cross the Shyok route safely with zero problems and arranged everything with a smile on his face. Also, we were given a nice discount too, over and above the specified rates, which is rare, given the peak season(June’16 2nd week).
    His contact: +91-9469462379

  33. Hello Dheeraj,

Thank you for your very useful information on Leh-Ladakh area. We are a family of 4 and plan to go to Leh-Ladakh area from 8th of August to 18th of August. The return trip – we have planned from Chandigarh to Mumbai on 19th; while ongoing will be Mumbai to Leh on 8th.
We have booked for the first 3 days at a hotel in Leh.

We would like your advise on: Whether we need to book guesthouses/hotels before hand at other places such as Hunder, Pangong, Tsomoriri, etc – Or we can go there direct and book. Will it be much cheaper, because by booking early, the choice of stay based on the area is lost. WE plan to use one of your above mentioned Taxi for the entire trip of 10 days to cover all the possible areas within that period.

Given the vast experience and knowledge of the place, it will be highly appreciated if you can advise on the best possible guesthouses/hotels at various locations in Leh Ladakh outskirts which will provide decent accommodation and Veg food. We are currently planning to stay at:
Nirvana palace in Leh, Olgok Guest house in Hunder, Marzee Home stay at Pangong lake area, etc, and have made tentative bookings at some of these locations (which can be changed as we have not made payments anywhere).

Thanking you very much in advance,

    Rgds
    NBS

    • NBS, if you OK to search few places, it shall be fine not to book that late in the season. You should get decent place to stay at all other places in Ladakh.

  34. Mannu Amrit on

    Hi Dheeraj!

Cant appreciate enough the efforts you’ve put DoW together. I’ve personally known so many people who’ve benefited so much from the amount of valuable information here.

My query for you was specific to a tempo traveller – I’m travelling in a group of 8-9 and as a group, we were contemplating upon taking a tempo instead of two cabs for our entire journey.

Would you be able to give a fare estimate for tempo traveller, just like other cabs? Do they also have a fixed rate chart, as decided by the union?

Our itinerary is listed below. We’ve purposely kept an extra day at Nubra, upon the advice of several of our friends who have been on this circuit before.

Day 1 Fly to Srinagar. Stay at Srinagar.
    Day 2 Stay at Srinagar
    Day 3 Srinagar to Kargil
    Day 4 Kargil to Leh
    Day 5 Leh
    Day 6 Leh to Pangong
    Day 7 Pangong to Leh
    Day 8 Leh to Nubra.
    Day 9 Nubra
    Day 10 Nubra to Leh
Day 11 Leh to Tso moriri
Day 12 Tso Moriri to Sarchu
    Day 13 Sarchu to Manali

    • Mannu, regarding itineary I shared my inputs above. Regarding cost of tempo traveller, they cost about 30-35% more than the cost of a single Innova/Aria taxi. So, all rates you see above, add 30-35% (35 if official union figure) to it.

    hello,
I have been reading your blogs and found it very helpful. Thank You so much for such kondness.
We are ( 6pepple) going to visit leh ladakh from 14th august- 20th august
I Want to know name of budget hotels or guest house ( around max 2000 per night)
and camp names in pangong tso.

and my max budget per person is 35000/-

even I have noted down numbers you have shared. may I mention your name while talking to them?

    • You have to find them on the spot. Over phone or advance booking, you will not find any under that budget. Your budget is very decent and easily doable for Ladakh trip of 7 days.

  37. we are 3 families with 4 kids (between 8-13 years) are planning for Leh-Ladakh trip during first week of June 2017. though it is too early to ask you, In need your expertise advise plesse.

we are planning to book a vehicle from srinagar (package with accommodation) preferably Tempo Traveler.

I just want to know whether the package trip is good or book the vehicle separately from srinagar to Leh and hire a local vehicle for visiting other places in and around Leh-Ladakh and returning to Chandigarh via manali and accommodation on our own.

I am from Bangalore, based on your advise I can start booking of flight to Srinagar at appropriate time and make other arrangements

    • Subbu, you have plenty of time and you can do plan on your own and do so. It will save lot of money. Firstly, I will suggest you that please plan it in other direction as going via Srinagar – Leh Highway will be much much easier on your body and help you acclimatize to the high altitude of Manali – Leh Highway.

      • Thank you so much Dheeraj Bhai…

In case I plan on my own, should I hire a separate vehicle from Srinagar to Leh and Leh to Chandigarh via Manali

Also, I keep hearing that they have issues with taxi’s entering in different regions?
    Please guide.

    • As per the taxi union rates of year 2016-17 (http://devilonwheels.com/leh-ladakh-taxi-rates-2016-17/) following is the break up

      Srinagar – Leh in 2 days = 18400
      Leh Local sightseeing = 2500-3000
      Leh – Nubra Valley 2 Day = 10566
      Leh – Pangong Tso 2 Day = 10301
      Leh – Tso Moriri – Tso Kar – Sarchu – Manali 2-3 days = 29056
      Leh – Manali 2 Days = 21588
      Leh – Pangong Tso 1 Day = 8653
      Leh – Nubra Valley 1 Day = 8053

You can usually get about 10-15% discount on these taxi rates after getting in touch with the driver directly.

      • Would you have driver’s name? I need to hire a one way innova from srinagar airport to leh, starting 7 am, 13th August…
Also do you think, that srinagar airport would be calm around the independence day?

        • For the leh – ladakh taxi union rate list 2016 – 17 including the contacts of some reliable taxi drivers within Leh – Ladakh, check the link here. You can get about 10-12% of discount by directly getting in touch with drivers and of course, talking in person rather on phone always help in bargaining more.

  40. Hello Dheeraj,

I am glad that someone like you has taken so much of efforts to collate such useful information for the first time travellers.

I with my family of 5 members are going for a 15 days trip to Srinagar-Amarnath-Leh-Srinagar. Its planned from 9th July, 2016 to 23rd July, 2016. I have read through information provided on DOW about the most common itinerary on Srinagar-Leh Highway. However, I need some advice on how should we break the journey so that we cover all the must visit places en-route Leh and at the same time, don’t tire ourselves much. Since, we are doing Amarnath Yatra also – both ways via helicopter, we will need a taxi from Baltal (basecamp for the Amarnath Yatra) instead of Srinagar.

This is the tentative itinerary except the Yatra dates, as the helicopters dates can’t be altered.

9th- Reach Srinagar at 11:00 am. Drive to Baltal (night stay, 106 kms)
10th- Do the Amarnath Yatra on the same day via helicopter.
11th- Buffer day (in case of not being able to do the yatra in single day because of cloud burst or landslides.)

*Need to find out the most optimal way to reach Leh from Baltal so that we don’t end up wasting our days with inappropriate halts*

    12th- Drive to Kargil
    13th- Drive to Leh
14th- Acclimatisation and sight-seeing in and around Leh
15th- Drive to Nubra, night stay
    16th- Drive back to Leh
17th- Drive to Pangong Tso (night stay, optional which will shift the itinerary by a day)
18th- Drive to Tso Moriri (if it’s advisable to go there with parents because of the roads)
    19th- Drive to Kargil
    20th- Drive to Srinagar
    21st- Sight-seeing in Srinagar
    22nd- Sight-seeing in Srinagar
    23rd- Afternoon flight to Ahmedabad.

Since, we have done Srinagar before, we are more keen to explore Leh-Ladakh hence we can stay for a night at Pangong and cut down a day of sight-seeing in Srinagar.

Can you please suggest a few more places to cover while going to Kargil from Baltal as we would have covered considerable distance from Srinagar and Kargil would be a short-drive. Which place should be the ideal night stay option in our case. Is it advisable to cover Baltal-Leh in 1 day?

What are the ways to work-around with the taxi-drivers from Baltal to Leh and back to Srinagar. Can taxis be easily arranged from Baltal.

    Thanks in advance

    • Hello Sandhya,

      Following changes I will propose:

17th- Drive to Pangong Tso (night stay, optional which will shift the itinerary by a day)
      18th- Drive back to LEh
      19th- Leh to Tso Moriri
      20th- Tso Moriri to Leh
      21st- Leh to Kargil
      22nd- Kargil to Leh
23rd- Afternoon flight to Ahmedabad, half day is enough for any sightseeing in Srinagar and Ladakh will be more fruitful in sightseeing than around Srinagar for 2 days you planned. And as you said you have done Srinagar before it makes no sense and more sense to do Ladakh on ease as I suggested above.

Rest keep the way you have above.

    • Thanks for the suggested changes. Can Tso Moriri be done in a day’s time as we would like to stay in houseboat for a night and relive that experience. Also, can you please shed some light on hiring a taxi from Baltal and if Kargil would be the ideal place for the stop over on 12th.

      • You should do Pangong Tso as a day as Tso Moriri will need two days. Hmm, getting a taxi from Baltal might be tricky. I am not 100% sure if you will get one from there unless prearranged. Yes, you should stop at Kargil and take some rest.

      • Vishnu tondwal on

Sandhya after doing nubra there is a road that take directly to pangong tso… I have been there and however that road is tricky but a gud driver from leh can help u. Second thing if u r doing amarnath than u book a cab on TRC srinagar and can ask him to pick u up from balatal.. Do remember always book a jk-10 taxi coz in leh no outside cab is allowed and a jk-10 cab from srinagar will help u to be comfortable with driver however leh based cab drivers are god sent. On the other hand srinagar based are cheaters. Pre book ur hotel in srinagar coz its a peek season and u wont find hotel room on the spot.

  41. Hai Dheeraj,

Me and my friend(boys) planning for trip to leh on this july. We are starting from manali on July 10th morning and we want to reach back delhi on 17th July(we know its very short). we just want to cover main spots of leh and it would be nice if return trip is through srinagar.
Could you please make us itinerary? we are planning to take bike from leh only.please recommend transportation and accomedation also.

    Regards,
    Afsal

    • It will take 3 days to reach Leh from Delhi via Manali side with stopovers at Jispa, Manali and 4 days to come back to Delhi from Leh via Srinagar side with stop overs at Jammu, Srinagar, Kargil . This makes it 7 days. 1 Day is required in Leh for acclimatization. That’s 8 days for you.

        • Dipak, I will like to suggest dropping the Drass part and save those two days to ease out your trips in Ladakh as you are trying to cover too much in too little days. As per the taxi union rates of year 2016-17 (http://devilonwheels.com/leh-ladakh-taxi-rates-2016-17/) following is the break up
