    Hi Mr.Deepak,

We are coming to Leh on May 04 2015 and our plan is for 7 nights.
We have one major constrain, we are jain family and we would like to know names of pure veg restaurants which do not even serve eggs.
Will it be easy for us to find such restaurants?
If so can you please list out the names of the same.
    Looking forward to your reply.
    Thank You.

  2. Hi Dheeraj, we are four friends, planned a trip in August 1st week 2014, we are from Bangalore.
Our Itenary is as follows :
Can you please help me whether this is possible.
June 30 – August 1st : Arrive Delhi from Bangalore, one day in delhi. August 1st Night will leave to Manali by bus.
    August 2nd : Manali
August 3rd : Leave manali earning morning towards Leh. Stay at Sarchu.
August 4th: Continue Journey towards Leh.
August 5th : Pangong Tso Lake and Leh Town.
August 6th : Leave Leh towards Srinagar, over night stay at Kargil.
August 7th : Leave Kargil and reach Srinagar.

Now comes the problem, we have booked the flight from Srinagar to Bangalore on August 9th.

Is it possible to Cover Pahalgan and Gulmarg in one day? Or any change in plan would really be help.

    Awaiting your reply.

    Thanks,
    Atheeq.

    • Well, I will say the above itinerary is just for being on the road and nothing else. Please dont stay at Sarchu as you will not be acclimatized. Stay at Jispa and then leave next early morning to Leh. Again you will not be acclimatized to go to Pangong Tso the very next day. So, you need to rest in Leh and then again move to Srinagar :( So you are not seeing anything in Ladakh apart from Leh and highways to enter and exit it. Regarding Pahalgam, i t takes two days on its own. Gulmarg can be done as day trip.

  3. Swapnil K on

    Hello Dheerajji,

I am planning Ladakh in the month of july.
I hv checked flight rates frm delhi to leh they are quite high as compared to last few yrs back.
Now I am exploring option from delhi to srinagar flight & then taxi. Want to know taxi fares from srinagar to leh & will it be good option ???
Is there any bus service available there ??

    • Hello Swapnil,

Good to see you here again !! :)

Better to fly to Srinagar in that case and start with taxi from there. Taxi cost shall be around 13-14K with night stop at Kargil for a drop to Leh. Then you can get taxi within Leh for Ladakh and come back even by HPTDC bus that runs on Manali – Leh Highway every alternate day.

There are also shared taxis that run on these routes and in fact within Ladakh even these shared taxis are for tourists to enjoy the route as well.

Buses also ply on Srinagar – Leh Highway and cost about 800-900 per ticket.

      Regards
      Dheeraj

  4. Vijay Pratap Singh on

    Hi.
I have so far planned a trip to Jammu on 8th March. We are a group of 2. I will be heading towards Sonamarg where another friend of mine will be joining us.
    I have a few queries.
    1. Are there good bus (Volvo) services from Jammu to Srinagar ?
If yes, how can we pre book our seats ?

    2. Planning to vissit Pahalgam and Leh (In march).
    Possible ?

    3. Srinagar To Leh by road at this time of year ?

    4. Any other plans that we should consider.

    • Hello Vijay,

      1. I have not heard of any Volvo Buses running between Jammu and Srinagar. You can get the standard ones though.
2 + 3. Pahalgam is possible but Leh will not be possible in March as route from Srinagar to Leh generaly opens up late April at max. or in May.
      4. Just stick to Kashmir including Sonamarg, Pahalgam, Gulmarg and Srinagar. May be try Aru Valley.

      Regards
      Dheeraj

  6. Hi again Dheeraj,

I returned a few days back after another thoroughly enjoyable trip to Ladakh. I met Chamba again and you will be pleased to know that after reading this blog several of your readers contacted him and hired him during their visit to Ladakh. As a result he did extremely good business this summer! This is all thanks to you and your brilliant website – thank you once again for the excellent work you’re doing!

This time Chamba even invited me home where I met his extremely warm and welcoming family who treated me to a most excellent traditional Ladakhi dinner. Chamba’s brother Rinchen even gifted me a piece of artwork that he made himself (he too drives a taxi and is also an amateur artist). And Chamba’s such a great guy, he didn’t even charge me for my airport pickup and drop!

I would like to share some more details about Chamba for the benefit of your readers. He works together with his brother Rinchen (whom I’ve talked about above) who is also himself an excellent driver. So those of your readers who are interested in availing their services may get in touch with either of the 2 brothers – their mobile numbers are: Chamba – 09596979829 and Rinchen – 09906999808. Also, they have an Omni too in addition to their Innova. I would appreciate if you would kindly update your blog with their phone numbers. Another thing they mentioned is that it would be just a little helpful if readers could, if possible, contact them a bit in advance about their tours. Oftentimes it so happens that tourists call them at very short notice and they (Chamba/Rinchen) have to unfortunately decline because they’re already engaged at that time.

    Thanks once again Dheeraj!

    Best regards,
    Hatim

    • Thanks Hatim !! Ladakhis are such hospitable and friendly by birth!! Some amazing people which is also a big contributing factor in making this place heaven :)

I have updated the contact info. for both of them

    • Mehul Shah on

Hi Hatim, we are planning a trip from Manali to Leh, what would you suggest us about the budget and accommodation. Regards, Mehul.

      • Hi Mehul,

The two articles that Dheeraj has pointed to provide an excellent reference source for budgeting a trip to Leh. To add my two pence worth, the exact budget would depend upon (a) the time of year at which you visit, (b) model of travel, (c) number of people in your group and (d) the level of comfort you wish for in your accommodation. For instance I always visit in September which is the lean season, fly in and out of Leh, travel alone and stay at budget guest houses. So my travel (flight + taxi) costs tend to be higher but I save a bit on accommodation and the discounted off-season rates. So the actual budget can vary significantly depending on these factors and as I’ve said Dheeraj’s articles discuss these in depth along with actual costs you can expect to incur.

There are other articles too on this website that discuss accommodation options at various places in Ladakh so do check those out too.

        Best regards,
        Hatim

  7. Firstly, your comments are very detailed and helpful….and I need a help please, are roads open in Nov ? And also is it advisable to travel in Jan ?

    • Avi roads are closed in November, they are more or like closed now. It is highly not recommended to travel to Ladakh by road anytime now and in winters too. Please plan it next season.

  13. Hi Deeraj ,

Thanks for such a useful information .We are four people planning for leh for 10 days .Can you please suggest that how can we arrange taxi from manali and how much cost they will charge ,we dont have any idea about taxi charges from manali to leh .

    Thanks in Advance ,
    Ashish

    • Ashish, with one night stop Manali – Leh will cost you about 16-18K depending upon the tourist rush and your bargaining skills. Once you reach Manali, go to taxi stand and directly get in touch with drivers.

      • Hello Dheeraj,

Me and my 4 other friends are planning a trip to leh in August. We will be leaving delhi on 9th for manali by volvo. Could you please advise if we could plan a trip goin from manali to leh and return via Srinagar(Kargil) and finally back to delhi on 18th?

        Thanks.

        • Also if you could give me a tentative idea on our travelling expense, via taxi(Inova).

        • It will take 3 days to reach Leh from Delhi via Manali and 4 days to come back to Delhi from Ladakh via Srinagar side. You have about 9 days in hand. Just two days will remain and out of which 1 days you need to do rest and acclimatize + arrange permits too. In the remaining one day, you can either day trip to Pangong Tso or Nubra Valley.

  14. Somdev Banerjee on

Hi Dheeraj. Me and my 2 friends are planning a trip 2 leh from delhi. We will reach delhi on 6th July early morning and planning to start our journey immediately. Kindly help us with the itinerary keeping in mind that we have to return to delhi by 14th morning. Also i would like to mention that we are planning this trip only in bus and cabs. Please help us out as my previous plan of going to Goa on the same dates washed out due to monsoon. Looking forward to this trip.

    • Somdev, you can follow the plan like below for 9 days for Manali – Leh – Manali:

      Day 1 | Delhi – Manali/Solang Valley
      — Better stay at Solang Valley and avoid Manali as sleeping at Solang Valley does help in acclimatization
      — If going by own car, get the permit made in advance to drive on Manali – Rohtang Pass road through hotel/travel agent in Manali
      — Overnight at Manali/Solang Valley

      Day 2 | Manali/Solang Valley – Keylong/Jispa
      — It is always better to stay either at Keylong/Jispa so that you do not feel sick or hit by AMS.
      — Avoid sleeping at Sarchu at any cost while going to Leh from Manali because your body will not be acclimatized by the time you reach there.
      — I prefer staying at Jispa more because Keylong gives the feeling of a town while Jispa is more closer to nature having Bhaga river running just aside the Manali – Leh Highway at Jispa.
      — Overnight at Keylong/Jispa

      Day 3 | Keylong/Jispa – Leh
      — Leave Keylong/Jispa early next morning, say by 4/5 AM types, so that you reach Leh in the evening.
      — Overnight at Leh

Day 4 | Leh Local Sightseeing + Inner Line Permits
      — To know the about the places to visit check the link: Travel Guide for Local Sightseeing of Leh Town in Ladakh
      — For more details on inner line permits process and to download application form read the link here
      — Overnight at Leh

      Day 5 | Leh – Khardung La – Diskit – Hunder – Leh
      — Head for Nubra Valley and do day trip
      — On the way enjoy a cup of soup at Highest Motorable Pass (as claimed) Khardung La
      — Diskit has monasteries with tallest lord Buddha statue and Hunder has sand dunes and bacterian camel safari

Day 6 | Leh – Pangong Tso Lake – Leh
      — Day trip to Pangong Tso
      — Overnight at Leh

      Day 7 | Leh – Taglang La – Moore Plains – Pang – Sarchu
      — Stay overnight at Sarchu

      Day 8 | Sarchu – Baralacha La – Keylong – Rohtang Pass – Manali
      — On the way cover Suraj Tal, Deepak Tal which are on the road sides only
      — Overnight at Manali

      Day 9 | Manali – Delhi
      — Return home

      • Thanx Dheeraj for the above assistance. Can you be more kind and help me out with the same itinerary only the other way around this time i.e., from leh to manali. And also can you suggest me a convenient and economic mean to reach leh from delhi and start my journey from there. The date and duration of the journey will remain same.

        • Somdev, I could not understand what you mean by Leh to Manali? Are you flying all the want to Srinagar? I think I shared Manali – Leh – manali trip completely. Get down to Manali by Volvo – HPTDC and then book a seat in HPTDC Semi Deluxe bus to Leh from Manali.

        • My apologies if i failed to reason it to you properly. What I meant to say is that in a travel tip from you I read that its better to start the journey from leh rather than manali. So now to frame my question in a constructive way I want to know what if I start my journey from Leh. What is the most convenient way to get to leh so that i start my trip from there and reach delhi by 14th July.
P.S: My journey will start on 6th July morning from delhi.

        • Somdev, you have 9 days and it is better that you follow this plan:

Day 1 | Delhi – Leh (By Flight)
          — Checkin at Hotel. Many hotels provide free pick and drop from Airport. Ask while you book them.
          — Take ample of rest as well as water or anything that keep your body hydrated enough. DO NOT OVER HYDRATE. Take ORS Soluted water or ORS – L tetra packs from home.
          — Do not over exert your body at any cost. Avoid too much up-down on stairs or avoid it in entirety, if possible.
          — After 5-6 Hrs of rest you can visit Leh Palace, Local Leh market, Shankar Gompa .
          — If you feel exerted go back to Hotel, have dinner at Hotel and take rest. Avoid any exertion. Else continue and,
          — Follow the sunset by stroll at Changspa road and have a nice dinner on varied cuisines offered in-around Changspa road.
          — Go back to hotel for overnight stay at Leh.

Day 2 | Leh Local Sighseeing + Inner Line Permits
          — For more details on inner line permits process and to download application form read the link here
          — Hire a taxi from Leh taxi stand or Hotel whichever suits you.
          — Bargain hard with taxi driver. Book that single taxi for entire trip after explaining the complete plan.
          — Take his inputs if you feel reasonable and if required modify the plan accordingly but should suits you best.
          — Ask him to be with you guys starting first day itself, if required and charged reasonable else do it at your own.
          — Again DO NOT over exert and take little steps and slow walks only.
          — If feeling OK then do Local sightseeing. To know the about the places to visit check the link: Travel Guide for Local Sightseeing of Leh Town in Ladakh
          — Do not use stairs at any of these places just to see them as it will exert your body much more.
          — Overnight at Leh

          Day 3 | Leh – Khardung La – Diskit – Hunder
          — Head for Nubra Valley and stay overnight at Hunder / Diskit
          — On the way enjoy a cup of soup at Highest Motorable Pass (as claimed) Khardung La
          — Diskit has monasteries with tallest lord Buddha statue and Hunder has sand dunes and bacterian camel safari

          Day 4 | Hunder / Diskit – Sumur – Panamik – Sumur – Khardung La – Leh
          — Sumur has a famous monastery to check out and Panamik has hot water springs
          — Overnight at Leh

Day 5 | Leh – Hemis Monastery – Pangong Tso Lake
          — Cover either of Hemis, Thicksey and Shey on the go towards Pangong Tso

Day 6 | Pangong Tso Lake – Thicksey Monastery – Shey Palace – Leh
          — Cover either of Hemis, Thicksey and Shey on return to Leh
          — Overnight at Leh

          Day 7 | Leh – Taglang La – Sarchu
          — Overnight at Sarchu or Pang

          Day 8 | Sarchu – Baralacha La – Keylong – Rohtang Pass – Manali
          — On the way cover Suraj Tal, Deepak Tal which are on the road sides only
          — Overnight at Manali

          Day 9 | Manali – Delhi
          — Return Home

Day 10 – Buffer day to be kept incase of road closure due to landslides or snowfall or perhaps you want to enjoy more.

          Regards

      • Thanks a lot for your reply.
Can I book a vehicle which can take me from Srinagar till Manali?

        • Partho, you will need to book a vehicle first for Srinagar to Leh and then from Leh you can book one vehicle which will do all ladakh sighseeing and drop you to Manali.

      • Im travelling with my family from Srinagar to leh on 4th August ( Sunday ) with sightseeing on the way and overnight stay in Kargil.

Can you Please share the contact details of tourist taxi / buses, is it possible to book bus ticket in advance.

  16. hello dheeraj,
i want to ask that whether any taxi are running in leh for local sightseeing(pangong, nubra, tso moriri) on shared basis.?

    • Hi Nikhil,

you will be able to find the shared taxi without much fuss at all. There are lots of flyers which people put at cafes, dine-ins, restaurants, travel agent desks/shops/whiteboards wanting to share the taxis for different trips within Ladakh. Even travel agent organize such shared taxis trip as well but charge a little higher about Rs 200-300 more than it would ideally cost. So, in worst case you can always go back to them and book a seat for yourself. Gelling up with people in Ladakh is more or less easy because many people travel solo and look forward to meet new people and share cultural thoughts and values over the trip. No where else in the world you will find more smiling and helpful people as Ladakhis are :)

  18. hi dheeraj
me and my 2 frnds are planning to go to leh in july 2013. As we are just 3 person so suv will be quite expensive for us. Aren’t their any hatchback cars for taxi purpose in leh that would help us in local touring(nubra, pangong, tsomoriri). Can we get them at price under 20000/- ?
    regards,
    archit

    • There aren’t any hatchbacks but there are Vans and Ecco that also run and has the lowest price tag. You can opt for them r better get people along with you to share taxi cost.

DoW have started an initiative under DoW as Himalayan Travel Community, leave your message in Travel Partners section at the link: Ladakh & Zanskar – Travel Partners Section. May be you meet someone online going over the same dates which will hep you save some good amount of money.

      • thnx for your valuable suggestion.
i have another question that can we follow the following route after visiting nubra valley-
        leh to pangong(1st day)
pangong to tso moriri via tsanga,loma,nyoma(2nd day)
tso moriri to sarchu or keylong via tso kar, pang (3rd day)
sarchu or keylong to manali(4th day)

        • Archit, permits for the route from Tsaga – Chusul are not permitted or approved since last couple of years. So, not a chance to cover this route.

    • Radheshyam on

      Hi Archit,
I and two of my friends are planning a trip in last two weeks of July. Considering that the travel cost is significant, we’re also in the same dialemma. I was wondering if we could join our trips.. Shall we sync up some time to discuss this?

  19. Dheeraj,
do you have any other contacts of the driver Rigzin (first on the list). Managed to get him on phone calls before 27th May and he assured would take care of transport. From last 04 days I’m not able to get him on both of his mobile contacts (Airtel – this No. doesn’t exist & BSNL – switched off). Is there any fixed landline contact of him with you? Need urgent message to pass it to him.

    Rgds
    Ajay

    • Ajay, do not worry he will be on some trip with guests/clients. He will be back soon. Don’t worry I have asked him whenever he will change the numbers he will certainly let me know :)

  20. Amit Goyal on

    hi Dheeraj,
We are going to ladakh next month. we have hired 2 innovas in self drive from autoriders. the cars have black number plates with yellow number. Do we face any problems entering the area from administration or the taxi associatoin there??
    thanks,
    amit goyal

  21. Dear Dheeraj,
2 of us are looking forward for a 4 night & 5 days trip to Leh covering Pongnang Lake too. Plz help as i dont know where to start from & where to stay ?

      • Hi Dheeraj,
We are planning to fly to Delhi, (till delhi bcos another 2 frens might join in ) so 4 people in total, take a bus till Manali. & from manali to Leh by tempo or taxi.

        • Brother, it takes 3 days to reach Leh from Delhi via Manali. Same will be required for coming back. You have just 4-5 nights, I do not think you can manage.

  22. Hi there,
    great site :) amazing info!
We have 7 days. Plan is:
July 6th: Fly Mumbai – Chandigarh
Travel to Manali and arrive there that evening. (We were thinking driving is best, hiring a cab)
    July 9th Manali-Leh Highway
We wanted to do this in one day, but is that insane?? If it is, where is the best place to stay the night on the highway at an intermediate point?? Which are good hotels/camps?
July 14th fly back to Bom from Leh
    Many thanks for your help!

    • Anshuli, yes doing Manali – Leh highwaay in one day is close to being insane. Better do Manali to Jispa and then do Jispa to Leh. This is the best way to do with un-acclimatized body.

  23. Mayur Bhutada on

    Dear Dheeraj,

First of all, congratulations and sincere thanks for this super fantastic portal which has turned out to be boon for the first-timers like us.

We are planning for this much awaited trip from 7-July-2013.
Our tentative plan is as follows:
    1. Day 1 (6 July) – Mumbai to Srinagar ( Via Flight) – Stay @ Srinagar
    2. Day 2 (7 July) – Srinagar to Kargil ( Via Taxi) – Stay @ Kargil
    3. Day 3 (8 July)- Kargil to Leh (Via Taxi) – Covering Few Spots on this highway)
    4. Day 4 (9 July) – Leh – Local Sight Seeing ( By Bike )
    5. Day 5 (10 July)- Leh – Pangong Lake – Leh ( Via Taxi )
Day 6 (11 July) – Leh to Khardungla Pass ( By Bike )
Day 7 (12 July) – Leh to Sarchu ( Via Taxi)
    – Stay @ Sarchu
Day 8 (13 July) – Sarchu to Manali ( Via Taxi) – Stay @ Manali
Day 9 (14 July)- Manali to Delhi (Via Bus)
Day 10 (15 July)- Delhi to Pune ( Via Flight)

    We had few questions:
    1. Is plan Good? Is it covering all important locations of Leh? Please suggest if we are missing anything important location.
    2. We are expecting a budget to be around (25K to 30k) – I Hope we are on the right track?
    3. We also want to include Bike tour for local visit and also for khardungla pass. Please comment on the this plan on whether is it possible or not.
    3. Will it possible for us to visit the important locations on both the highways in our planned journey of 2 days each on these highway? We just don’t want it to be sight seeing trip on both of these highways. Also, please tell whether this will be hectic?

We have restriction of maximum 10 days for this trip.

Can you please help us in chalking out the basic plan so that we can book flight tickets from Mumbai – Srinagar and Delhi to Pune.

Please alter our plan if required.

We will finalise the stay, food, transportation, bike hire, local permits etc. after basic plan is confirmed.

    Eagerly awaiting for your response.

    Yours,
    Mayur

    • Hi Mayur,

      1. Plan is OK but do Leh – Khardung La – Leh before Pangong Tso.
      2. Hmm, might fit in. For doubts related to budget for Leh – Ladakh trip, I am sure the link below will help you alot for getting an idea of overall budget:
How to calculate cost or budget for Leh – Ladakh trip
Still, in case you have any doubt, kindly let me know.
      3. Yes, pretty much this is the way it is done mostly.

The above plan looks OK given the limited days you have in hand. May be on Day 4 you can reach Nubra Valley if you get the permits early over Khardung La and come back making it almost perfect trip to Ladakh with 10 days :)

      Regards
      Dheeraj

  24. Brother,
I desparately need to get in touch with you to discuss about my Leh/Ladakh tour. So plz plz send me your mobile number.

  29. Balasubramanyaswamy on

    Dear Dheeraj Sharma,
We are planing to go to Leh in August 1st from Srinagar.
How we must plan to go and reach Leh and return back to Srinagar on 4th of August?

    • Balasubramanyaswamy, please avoid it because it takes 2 days to reach Leh from Srinagar with overnight halt at Kargil and same way back to Srinagar. So, all your 4 days will be consumed by just going to Leh and coming back. Rather explore Gulmarg and Pahalgam in these days.

  30. Nupur Jain on

We want to do River rafting but we have got just one day spare.
Is it possible? and How? pls guide?

    Day 16 (October 19th) : Free day(not have a plan ,yet) , stay
Day 17 (October 20th) : depart from Leh to New Delhi

from the above itinerary you’ll see how it is very importance that I have to prepare for private taxi in advance.
A week ago ,my niece called Mr. Rigzin she told him that we want him to be our driver for this trip and pick us up at Sonamarg. He told her that he can help us and he can also help us with the taxi in Kashmir .
Thus, I sent SMS to his mobile phone(+919622954779) twice to ask for his email address so that I could send the details of this trip to him.
But,until now I do not get any message from Rigzin, it may be he do not recceive my message. So, Mr.Dheeraj, please contact Rigzin and ask him to contact me at my email address asap.
Moreover, for the free day on Day 16, please suggest the places that I should visit .
    Best regards,
    Pradeep

    • Pradeep, I do not take a call in between any tourist or service provider. Also, getting a mail from Rigzin in unlikely as I feel. Get in touch over phone with him, not even smses. Also, please keep in mind he is not a travel agent or tour operator BUT he is a great soul who will be there to help you in every need till you are with him. So, do not expect any callbacks from him brother!!

Regarding itinerary, you will not find any camps at Tso Moriri or Pangong Tso at this time of the year. Most of the hotels in Nubra will be only those like guest houses only. Considering the stay at Lamayuru again it will be very basic. So be ready fro some challenge 😉

      Regards
      Dheeraj Sharma

  33. Dear Dheeraj,
Is the road way from Leh to manali suitable to travel in june last week??
or do we prefer Leh to Manali via srinagar???

    • Rushi, I will suggest you that please plan it in other direction as going via Srinagar – Leh Highway will be much much easier on your body and help you acclimatize to the high altitude of Manali – Leh Highway. Also, it allows you to enjoy the beauty of Manali – Leh by splitting the journey almost evenly in two days which is very difficult in the other direction. Thirdly, it will allow you to fit Tso Moriri lake into the itinerary in better way. You can read more reasons on the link here

        Abhijit

        • Hi Abhijit,

Your plan looks OK to me and you should do good with it. Regarding hotel bookings you can get in touch with either all these hotels OR single point of contact “info@offbeatescapes.com”. Refer my name, they will be able to offer good discounts (10-15%) too on all the bookings. Also, I saw one of your mails too going via booking form for Tso Moriri I think.

Now, regarding to book or not to book, I will say: It depends on if you are OK with searching a little bit over the place once you reach there and if you are looking for specific hotels like you mention above. They all are good ones and generally gets booked but does not mean that once you walk in, you may find some accommodation other than these places at most likely case. Also, I see you looking for Rs 1000 or less at Kargil, I am not sure if there is any other than JKTDC rest house, if you can get hold of the booking at that place. I stayed at Greenland Hotel which appeared to me the most cheaper on my Zanskar trip last year and standard as compared to other which are there in Kargil. Always keep in mind that you save more if you take risk more with the bookings. Walking into hotel and then bargaining is different thing while booking over phone :)

          Regards
          Dheeraj Sharma

  35. Salil Modak on

    HI Dheeraj

First of all thanks a lot for this awsome page. You are doing great work!!!
We are 3 couples planning to visit Leh Laddakh between 13th july and 21st july.one couple from indore and 2 from hyderabad. Due to extremely expensive flight rates we would have to go Indore/HYD to srinagar and then to Leh. Back via the same route. This is taking us a day more than our allotted week. Could you suggest the quickest route so as to save time. Our first preference is Leh Laddakh. We wouldnt mind missing out on Srinagar.

    Thanks

    Salil Modak

    • Salil if you are going to Srinagar then there is no shortcut, you have to go via this route only. You cannot skip Srinagar because that is the only airport other tan Leh from where you can quickly reach Leh. There is Kullu as well but I think it is always better to go via Srinagar than Manali and in your case since you are flying directly so number of days taken to reach will not be of any relevance.

  36. Nupur Jain on

    ooo thanks for the reply.
    Really nice of you.

We were planning trip of 12days. please see the itinerary.

We are 11 (4 girls and 7 boys) and need 3 bikes and 1 MUV car (like tavera) with 6-7 seating capacity.

10th june – manali to jispa

    11th – jispa to pang

    12th – pang to leh

    13th – rest at leh

    14th – leh to pangong

    15th – pangong to leh

    16th – leh to nubra

    17th – rest at nubra

    18th – nubra to leh

    19th – leh to pang

    20th – pang to jispa

    21st – jispa to manali

    Now i need to know

    IS THIS PLAN GOOD?

SHALL WE TALK TO OFFICIAL MANALI TAXI STAND AFTER GOING A DAY BEFORE TRIP?

    Waiting fo rthe reply,

    • Hello Nupur,

Please do not follow the above plan as it do not cater to the requirements of the acclimatization which is key to a successful Ladakh trip. Better do it in the manner listed below:

      Day 5 | Leh – Khardung La – Diskit – Hunder
      — Head for Nubra Valley and stay overnight at Hunder / Diskit
      — On the way enjoy a cup of soup at Highest Motorable Pass (as claimed) Khardung La

      • MANOJ TIWARI on

        Hello Dheeraj,

First of all thank you for such a nice and great efforts and guidance you have been providing.

We ( 2persons)planning to visit Leh from 9th-June-13 onwards and will be picking up taxi from Srinagar to Leh. Can you pls. guide us on Govt. Approved Taxis as we will be on LTC.

        Thanks.
        Manoj Tiwari

        • Sorry Manoj, I am not sure about this one. But, I think as long as you take the bill from any of them, it should not be any problem.

        • MANOJ TIWARI on

Thanks Dheeraj, Have changed the plan as taxi from Srinagar will take more time…and we will be left with lesser days to visit Leh.
Will be reaching on Leh on 10th-June-13 morning from Delhi by air and depart from Leh to Srinagar on 15th-Morning by Taxi.Pls. suggest whether this time is sufficient or not. Regards
          Manoj

        • Manoj, it will be better if you do the other way round because then you may get away with just one day rest for acclimatization in Leh. If you fly directly, you need 2 days of rest at least if not 3 for acclimatization. If you go via Srinagar then it will need 2 days of journey and 1 days of rest should be fine. That saves at the very least one day for you. Then finally fly back to Delhi from Leh

        • MANOJ TIWARI on

Hi Dheeraj, as advised by you..we have modified the plan…now we will be travelling to LEH from Srinaagr by Taxi on 09-June-13 and will be returning back directly from LEH- DLI- Ahmedabad on 18th-June…it will be really a big help if you can pls. advise the budget hotels to stay there….thanks n regards

      • Nupur Jain on

        Thanks dear Dheeraj,

        this is awesome info.
Two of four girls along with us have this vomitting problems in car at mountains/altitudes.
Are we more prone to AMS?

I think we wont be doing justice traveling 300 kms a day directly from Jispa to Leh. Isnt it? Shall we not stay somewhere in the middle?

        Regards

        • Nupur, that is motion sickness which is different from mountain sickness. Motion sickness mostly happens due to driver taking sharp corners at high speed other than people who suffer for travel sickness usually. Please do not do that because you will not be acclimatized to stay in between Jispa and Leh anywhere. Else, you might fall sick and it may cause trouble for the whole trip plan.

        • Nupur Jain on

          Dear Dheeraj,
everything is okay but i dont understand how would we 11 of us can travel 300 kms a day on 3 bikes and Innova?

          Is it okay?

        • Nupur, it should be manageable as long list of people do that :) … Start by 5 AM and you will reach in good time to Leh by 6-7 PM at max.

        • Nupur Jain on

          Dear Dheeraj,

Can you name some drivers from manali also like you mentioned from Leh. That would be handsome help.

          Thanks

  37. Anjan Saha on

    Thanks for reply.
Actually I was thinking that visit two lakes in two consecutive days may be monotones (we will try to return from somoriry in same day) so I planned Nubra between particular days.
Would you please suggest about the vehicle we can easily get from Manali for Leh (we are three people in our group) as share basis and also at the time of returning from Leh to Srinagar.
Do you know how much time share vehicle or bus will take from Srinagar to Jammu?
    Regards
    Anjan

    • Hi Anjan,

Nopes, it do not work tat ways. For better health and combat AMS, yo must visit Nubra Valley first and then Pangong Tso. You will not get it easily as shared vehicles that will halt at Keylong. Rather fo for HPTDC bus for Manali to Leh which costs about 2000 including accommodation at Keylong.

Srinagar to Jammu is about 8-9 Hrs of journey.

      Regards
      Dheeraj

  38. Nupur Jain on

We are also planning from 10th june.
Please suggest taxi providers from manali to leh and back leh to manali.

    So much thanks in advance.

    • Nupur, how many day you have in hand and why are you planning a trip from Manali side? You should go from Srinagar side and come back from Manali side as a rule of thumb. But, even in case you are planning from Manali side then you will need two taxis, one that can drop you to Leh from Manali and then one which will be Ladakh taxi that will allow you to roam inside Ladakh first and then drop you back to Manali because taxi from Manali with Manali number will not be allowed to roam in Ladakh.

      • Nupur Jain on

        One more thing Dheeraj,

Shall we have to book taxis in advance or just going at taxi stand a day before will do?

Shall we talk to official taxi stand of manali and leh or We should talk to drivers mentioned here?

        • Nupur, you can get the taxi in from Manali taxi stand. Talk directly to the drivers there and they will be ready to give you good offers. In Leh you can contact the above drivers for the complete rest of the tour. Also, check with them if they can pick or are around in any of the day in Manali so that you have only one vehicle all the way for complete tour.

          Regards
          Dheeraj Sharma

      • Nupur Jain on

        Hey dheeraj,

I heard this year roads wont open before 15th June, 2013 from leh to manali.

        Is this true??

        • It is too early to comment but usually the road to Manali – Leh Highway opens by June first week or late May. Srinagar – Leh Highway has already been opened in record time. So, expect exception for Manali – Leh as well. Stay tuned for the status updates for Manali – Leh Highway at the link here

  39. Anjan Saha on

    Hello Dheeraj
    I am Anjan from Kolkata.
Actually we three friends decided to visit Ladakh at beginning of July this year.
We already booked our ticket. We start at 30th June from Kolkata and reached Amritsar next day. On 2nd July evening we take bus from Amritsar for Manali and probably we reached Manali at 3rd July early morning. We decided to enter Ladakh from Manali via Sarchu, Keylong and return via Kargil, Srinagar. Our return ticket booked from Jammu at 15th July.
If you have no any problem, would you please make a detail tour summary for us including the places like Pangong-Lake, Somoriri-Lake, Nubra-vally, Local site seen, Alchi, Likir, Lamayaru.
Is there any possibility to spend two or three days at Srinagar after completing ladakh within our tour schedule?
Please suggest for transportation we can avail from Manali to Leh and returning from Leh to Srinagar.
I found some budget guest house and taxi drivers contact number from your site. If I call them and they asked for advance money then what will be the risk factor about our advance money.
Waiting for reply with your valuable suggestion.

    • Anjan, you can refer the below itinerary and try to see how it fits within your requirements and then probably we can discuss further once you have initial plan in place.

      — Overnight at Leh

      Day 5 | Leh – Khardung La – Diskit – Hunder

      Day 6 | Hunder / Diskit – Sumur – Panamik – Sumur – Khardung La – Leh
      — Sumur has a famous monastery to check out and Panamik has hot water springs
      — Overnight at Leh

Day 6 | Leh – Hemis Monastery – Pangong Tso Lake
      — Cover either of Hemis, Thicksey and Shey on the go towards Pangong Tso
      — Overnight at Pangong Tso (Spangmik or Lukung)

Day 7 | Pangong Tso Lake – Thicksey Monastery – Shey Palace – Leh
      — Cover either of Hemis, Thicksey and Shey on return to Leh
      — Overnight at Leh

Day 8 | Leh – Tso Moriri via Chumathang
      — Cover Karzok Monastery
      — Overnight at Karzok or Tso Moriri

Day 9 | Tso Moriri – Tso Kar – Debring (Manali – Leh Highway starts) – Taglang La – Upshi – Leh
      — Come back via Tso Kar and Manali – Leh Highway to Leh
      — Overnight at Leh

Day 10 | Rest day at Leh to enjoy local culture and some shopping OR Monastery tour OR you can do tour to Sham Valley
      — Monastery tour may include Hemis, Thicksey, Stakna and Shey monasteries. They come on the route of Pangong Tso but as you will be doing day trip, it will be a bit hectic to include them on that day only.
      — Sham Valley include Alchi, Likir, Basgo Palace, Magnetic Hills, Confluence at Nimmu, , Gurudwara Pather Sahib
      — Overnight at Leh

      Day 11 | Leh – Lamayuru – Kargil

      — Overnight at Jammu

      Day 14 | Jammu – Delhi

      Regards
      Dheeraj Sharma

      • Anjan Saha on

Thanks for your reply. But I want to inform you that Delhi is not in our route. We start from Kolkata and reached Manali via Amritsar and return Kolkata from Jammu. I will try to follow your tour guide for completing all the spots.
        Please suggest about our plan….
        Day1-start from Manali
        Day2-reach Leh
Day3-Local sightseeing + Inner line permit
        Day4-Pangong Lake and return
Day5-Nubra Valley (covering all spot you mention)
        Day6-Return Leh from Nubra
Day7-Start for Somoriri (If possible return same day or stay at Karzok Vally)
        Day8-Returm Leh
        Day9-total rest and marketing
        Day10-Kargil via Alchi, Likir, Lamayaru
        Day11-Srinagar

Now I want some information from you, if you have no any problem.
What kind of vehicle we can easily get from Manali to Leh (please keep in mind we are three people in our group) as share basis and also at the time of returning from Leh to Srinagar.
If I call the taxi drivers, can they make the total tour as share basis? If they ask for advance money then can I give or not.
Can they arrange the permits for us?
Is it needed to book the guest house and if the answer is yes then the question arise again If they ask for advance money then can I give or not.
Do you know how much time share vehicle or bus will take from Srinagar to Jammu?
        Again waiting for reply.
        Regards
        Anjan

        • Hello Anjan,

Your plan looks OK but please see me modifications below:

Day4-Nubra Valley (covering all spot you mention)
          Day5-Return Leh from Nubra
          Day6-Pangong Lake and return
          Day7- Leh – Tso Moriri
          Day8- Tso Moriri – Leh

Also, it will be much much nicer if you do it from Srinagar side, if possible. Regarding your queries:

          1. Taxi drivers will not be able to arrange group for you. They might not ask for advance money but yes, tour operators can as for it. It should be OK to give advance to some reliable tour agent. Most likely you will not get any shared taxi over bookings. Both taxi guys and tour operators can arrange permits for you.

          2. If you are OK with little search here and there, then most likely you should be able to accommodation plus it will save money too with on the spot bookings.

          Regards
          Dheeraj Sharma

  40. Hello Dheeraj,

Your site proved to be an invaluable resource for me in planning my recent trip to Ladakh. I am highly grateful for the wealth of information, advice and updates you maintain. My trip was most memorable and this was made possible in large part because of the information and tips I got here. Keep up the excellent work!

Chamba (mobile no 9596979829) is the name of the taxi driver I hired during my trip. I would very highly recommend him to your readers and would be much obliged if you could please add his name to your list as well. He drives a white Innova and I travelled with him for 3 days around Pangong Tso, Nubra and Turtuk. He’s a skilled driver, a most amiable young man and a really nice person.

    Thanks once again Dheeraj!

    Best regards,
    Hatim

    • Hello Hatim,

Inspired by your feedback on Chamba, I tried contacting him. His no. has changed since. I managed to trace his new no. Wondering if I could chat with you about your experience with Chamba. could you share your mail id or contact no. My id is ctra1271@yahoo.com.

Thank you so much in advance.

Congratulation Dhiraj. Today I speak with Rigjin for Ladakh tour and I refer your name as friend and insist him for discount and after hearing your name he has provided me discount for upcoming Ladakh tour that starts from 27-th June 2013.
Also prima facie it appears that he is a good guy.
Again thanks Dhiraj for your help through this web-site.
One thing I am mentioning in this connection is that the road between Pangong-Tsomoriri via Chusul is closed now.AS per Rigzin military has ordered to close the road for public.

    • Thats great brother. I am glad Rigzin was able to help you with good offer. He is indeed a very very very nice chap. You will completely enjoy his company. Yes, that permit thing for Chusul rather beyond Chusul towards Tsaga La has become a trouble point now.

We did a roadtrip from Srinagar to Leh & back in Aug’12. The guy who ferried us was Naseer. Nice guy, he had just got a new Xylo… excellent driving throughout. His contact no. is 9906229203 & 9469293183. Refer my name (Rohit) to him.

    • Hello Rohit,
I’m looking for a good driver for the same roadtrip as yours.

Did you contact this driver(Naseer)for transportation purporse only (from Srinagar to leh with 1 night halt at Kargil) or also roamimg around for sightseeing purpose en route in Kashmir and ladakh ?

      • If it had been a Ladakh number taxi then only sightseeing is possible within Ladakh. Otherwise, it can only be used for drop to Kargil or Leh and then change of taxi with Ladakh number is required.

      • Rohit Vaidya on

Hi Pradeep, As Dheeraj mentioned , it was a Ladakh number taxi. What happened was, this guy happened to drop some1 in Srinagar on the day that we arrived there. (I had called him up a month before our visit & coincidentally, he had plans to drop some1 to Srinagar from Leh on the same day). So he took us from Srinagar to Leh (kargil night halt) & he was with us throughout the trip. Ladakh sight-seeing, Nubra valley (1 night) & Tso Pangong lake (1 night) & then drop back to Srinagar (no night halt).
So 1 taxi guy throughout !

        • Oops, my bad. I forgot to map the number with the above list in the article :) … I know Naseer too and have done trip with him personally. He knows me very well too, just ask him that you need decent discount and he will be ready to offer that :)

  45. Urgently require a taxi operator contact from Srinagar to Leh, who can transfer us at an affordable n cheap price! Can anyone help?

      • Lol.. na na, actually, we have plans for June. I believe passes would open by that time right? Urgently because we need to plan the trip properly as early as possible so that we can become sure about the budget and everything 😀

        • Can you advice me what which one would be better – Taxi or Bus? :\

        • Mostly it depends on your budget because Bus would be cheaper but less comfortable and less flexible on sightseeing stops as compared to taxis.

      • Hi Dheeraj

Gr8 job . Valuable articles for the ppl planning for Leh trip . Need a small help , I am planning for a road trip with my family from Srinagar to Leh during June mid . If you have contact info of some taxi operators please share .

        Thanks,
        Chinmaya

        • Chinmaya, there would be many options available at Srinagar taxi stand else contact Firoz (09469190694) or Kazim (09419801538). Firoz is Kazim’s son and they might remember me if wanna take the reference.

    • Well, You can reach there and bargain then to get good rates. Normally the rates to Leh from Srinagar with one night halt at Kargil are somewhere between Rs 11K to 13K depending upon the season and tourist rush. For Leh – Ladakh sightseeing, you already good list of drivers in the above article and the latest rates as well. • hi Madhuvanti,

      1. I guess it is abut 200-250 bukcs for on way. Please contact the hotel you are going to book if any, they might provide you with free one in case it is not economic hotel.

      2. Hmmm… Do visit Sham Valley (alchi-Likir-Basgo and other things that comes on the way)

      3. You can make a day trip to Pangong Tso as well just before the tour ends or you can do the monastery tour of Hemis, Thicksey, Shey, Stakna, Matho, Stok (All in a circuit)

      4. Ladakh is one of the safest places on earth buddy especially when crimes are concerned andit is one of those places in India where solo traveler are very common. So, do not worry about safety at least from humans, people in Ladakh will come and let a helping hand even in the middle of night at any place they are :)
