Counting on the Numbers?

Let’s look at the numbers game now:

  • Lakes Covered: Pangong Tso, Tso Moriri, Tso Kar, Surajtal, Deepak Tal, Chandratal. These are just 6 in number, so what about other 6?
  • Passes Covered: Zoji La, Fotu La, Khardung La, Chang La, Lachulung La, Nakee La, Baralacha La, Kunzum La, Rohtang La. Again these are 9 in number, so what about other 3?

Well, let’s wait and keep something for the live adventure and let us Explore the Unexplored to know the missing lakes and passes on the trip itself. It may be a surprise for you and for veterans may be not. But, I almost guarantee that at least One Missing High Mountain Pass and Two Missing Lakes must be surprise for everyone, if not complete missing count 😉

Eligibility

You can easily see that the above Ladakh tour plan has about 95-105 Hrs of drive time in 12 days which makes an average of 8-9 Hrs of drive time per day that is the time you will be on the road itself almost every day. This tells that the difficulty level of the trip will be somewhere in between Moderate and Tough. Hence, for being apt traveller for this tour:

  • You must be adventurous enough to take up this heavy duty road trip
  • You must have high levels of endurance and low levels of fatigue
  • You must have a positive outlook towards adventure & should always respect the time to hit the roads
  • It’s Ladakh, a place where Mountain rules… So, you must always be ready for the surprises or change in plans
  • If required, you must be ready to stay at moderate Guest Houses or Homestays especially when away from big towns
  • I feel families should not pay attention to this tour as it might be little difficult to handle. We will plan something special for families or easy going travellers too in the time to come.

The Loose Ends

In order to have a varied flexibility, I have kept two Loose ends, head and the tail. So, in case you have more number of days at your end and would be driving/riding all the way from Delhi to Delhi then you might opt for either of the Loose ends mentioned below to explore more, especially the Spiti Valley and Kinnaur Valley ride.

Loose Head

Interested travellers can join the group at Srinagar on 21-09-2013 even if if they would like to drive/ride from Delhi or fly to Srinagar before as given below:

  • Day 19-09-2013 | Delhi – Jammu/Patnitop
  • Day 20-09-2013 | Jammu/Patnitop – Srinagar OR Fly to Srinagar from home town
Loose Tail

Interested travellers can also leave the group at Losar on 01-10-2013, if if they would like to drive/ride towards Spiti Valley and Kinnaur Valley and reach Delhi via Shimla route as given below:

  • Day 01-10-2013 | Losar – Kunzum Pass – Chandratal – Losar – Ki – Kibber – Kaza
  • Day 02-10-2013 | Kaza – Langza – Hikkim – Comic – Kaza
  • Day 03-10-2013 | Kaza – Pin Valley – Dhankar – Tabo
  • Day 04-10-2013 | Tabo – Nako – Kalpa
  • Day 05-10-2013 | Kalpa Sangla – Chitkul – Sangla
  • Day 06-10-2013 | Sangla – Rampur – Narkanda  / Matiana
  • Day 07-10-2013 | Narkanda / Matiana – Shimla / Chail – Chandigarh – Delhi

If required, all necessary arrangements can be referenced for accommodation as well as commute in Spiti Valley as well as Kinnaur Valley via Hindustan – Tibet Highway.

Are you interested?

In case, you feel the RUSH in the blood, want to feel the ADVENTURE at its best, want to feel CLOSER to the nature, want to get OUT of the comfort zone,  want to be a part of a journey where there is no destination rather JOURNEY itself is the DESTINATION then… Then don’t wait to shoot me an email at “admin@devilonwheels.com” or leave a Comment OR check the Facebook Event to join this DoW Ladakh Adventure – LifeMeinBaarBaar

We can talk over phone and discuss if it really suits / meets the expectations from both ends and get going from there…

Confirmations

We will use Google Docs Spreadsheet to track the confirmed people (or almost confirmed with strong intent) going on this saga adventure and here is the link to it: Confirmed People – DoW Ladakh Tour 2013 . In case, you find your name is missing, feel free to get in touch with me over phone or email.

Disclaimer

Guys, future is unpredictable and funny most of the time… So, in any WORST of the cases of any EXTREMELY CRITICAL personal exigency or official outage, I might not be able to join the trip. However, be assured that I will try my level best to explain the whole plan, places, all suitable arrangements and anything required to make this trip a successful one for all those who register for it. Also, please don’t kick me in case you do not find the hidden lakes and passes interesting as compared to big shots 😀

Future of DoW Tours?

As I said, future is funny!! But, based on the results as well as learning from this tour, definitely there will be more Open Tours planned for the readers of the DoW blog, some short ones considering families, easy going travelers and some adventurous ones too. Most likely, there will be one for Spiti Valley next year for sure after you see the glimpses of Spiti around Chandratal and Kunzum Pass on this trip.!!

Conclusion

Looking forward to hear from you all. Based on the inputs on the feedback and getting in touch with almost all of you interested in it, personally, we will finalize the group and make the necessary arrangements whatever requested or required.

  1. Hi Dheeraj thanks …we leave from mum on 22nd to srinagar ..from 29th we start our journey to leh from kargil n follow ur itinerary till13th June covering spitti valley as well …:)

  2. Hii Dheeraj,
Thanks … We are starting on 26 may from Mumbai reaching Srinagar on 27… Will be exploring Srinagar and nearby areas and will reach leh on 2nd June and follow ur itinerary till 11th for leh and thereafter ur itinerary for spitti valley till 17th June ..

    • You mean above itinerary? There will be lots of iffs and buts there, Wari La might not be open during this time or may have just opened. Not sure which car you have, so before venturing into that road to wari La take a calculative risk. Then beyond Chusul is all lucky day about, even if you hve permits then as well it all depends upon army to let you through or not. Hence, keep some other Plan B as well with you. Regarding Spiti, it should be fine.

      • Yup we r following ur above itinerary .. We will be hiring a car .. Which car is most suitable per se.. Could u help us with any plan b .. We are about 12 of them

        • 22nd May should be fine. Better have Scorpio OR Xylo. Chandratal will not be possible most likely during that time. So, does Kunzum Pass. Hence, in May, I doubt you will be able to make it to Spiti Valley.

        • Tapasvini on

Thanks so much 🙂 chandratal we would reach only in starting 2nd week of June… N continuing to spitti valley from there .. Would it be open then?

        • I doubt that road to Chandratal will open by that time. If Kunzum Pass opens, then chances are you can trek to Chandratal but very much likely that it will not be motorable.

        • Tapasvini on

Also we plan to carry tents to com in anywhere on the trip… Would it possible to camp in leh Ladakh or spiti ? Which is a good tent to buy?

  3. Hii Dheeraj,
We are planning to take this trip this year along with spiti valley and kinnaur 🙂 … Could u have any idea of the approx per per cost for the same?… Also, is there anywhere in between we can try a very short day trek/ camping/ cycling ? Many thanks

  5. I see the article for how to budget for Ladakh based on starting point manali, srinagar etc. Can some one tell me who can provide most economic Rental Car in Leh and est. cost for an itinerary (10 days incl. arrival and departure from Leh), any contact (phone & e-mail) for such person/agency?

    thanks.

    Sharad

  6. Mehul Shah on

Hi Dheeraj, we are a group of 8 people planning to travel by road from Manali to Leh to Srinagar. Could you please help us with a Itenary and Accommodation for the same.

    • Hello Mehul,

Firstly, I will suggest you that please plan it in other direction as going via Srinagar – Leh Highway will be much much easier on your body and help you acclimatize to the high altitude of Manali – Leh Highway. Also, it allows you to enjoy the beauty of Manali – Leh by splitting the journey almost evenly in two days which is very difficult in the other direction. Thirdly, it will allow you to fit Tso Moriri lake into the itinerary in better way. You can read more reasons on the link here

You can check a very balanced and most common itinerary for Leh – Ladakh followed by many travelers including me at the link here for 14-15 days: Most Common Itinerary for Leh – Ladakh.

For accommodation, check the nice, preferred list of accommodation options in entire Leh – Ladakh (Leh, Nubra Valley, Pangong Tso, Tso Moriri) including moderate and cheap budget hotels as well in the series of articles starting on the link here

      Regards

  7. Hi Dheeraj,

All the very best for your first group endeavor. I am sure all would be having great experience and you will have lotsa learning.
We had a great time exploring ladakh and all the thanks to your timely and detailed help.
Though we had some learning in terms of getting unknown people to the group and trusting them but we had positive and negative experiences both so will share for people at large. Will publish photoblog soon.
Sorry for not being in touch from long.

    • Urvanki, wow, will wait for your log in the community. Well, yeah, I am already through lots of learning in this shared or common tour 😉 … I am not taking any other seriously now 😀 Will wait for your log and thanks a ton for your wishes.

  8. hello, my wife and I would love to join this trip. We are from Portugal and we are currently in Delhi. We could join some one on a car and split the expenses (we have no vehicle) or rent a bike and gear necessary. Can some one advise us on the best way to join this trip. Thank you.

Enough is enough and here I am now starting from Delhi to Leh on 12/13 Sept leaving all the hiccups behind. We are two people on bikes probably until the end of the month, meaning a little over couple of weeks.

Will there be a possibility of catching up with you guyz somewhere on the way? May be during a night halt or evening strolls!!

      • Krish Uniyal on

Thank you for your reply and sharing your number Dheeraj.
I will be needing some inputs from your vast traveling experience in that region to plan my trip better. I hope it will be okay if I connect with you in a day or two with some basic queries.

Look forward to speaking with you soon.

        Thanks once again!
        Krish

  12. Best wishes to all the devils for the trip. It will be very tough for the one who has not traveled in the Trans-Himalayas. But the thrill part will be very awesome. I think you should also plan for the exit, if someone feels like to quit in between (off-course, respectfully) as you must have for safety. I am sure, some nuisance character will be there. Its a fun-in-car travel, but it will test the endurance of all the Devils. Those who are short tempered will experience usual frustration surges. Limit your alcohol consumption to the bare minimum if you can’t handle it. Its all physiological and biochemical affect of high altitude. Forgive them. Let the adrenalin rush in and flow freely. I would have joined you, but the dates are out of my vacation period, although not my age. Dheeraj, have you planned for a video shoot of this trip? It will be a nice National Geographic stuff. Have a great adventure.

    • Thank you so very much Ravindra sir!! yes, we have plan for exit if someone feels that he do not want to continue we will have them rest at Leh and will ask them to join us over Manali – Leh highway or at Tso Moriri. Or they can fly back home from Leh or Srinagar as well. Let’s see how it unfolds sir.

Regarding Video shoot, we will try to shoot some videos only for few parts and that too by cameras, may be next time, yes we will but we will try to post pictures of all the lakes and passes we cross in a group 😀

      • Wow!
Luckily I m travelling on the same dates with my wife
I have already starting gearing up and collecting essential tools and medicines
I was plannin to start from delhi on the 19th sept 2013 night at around 10pm to Srinagar
Rest for a day and start on 21st further to kargil leh keylong spiti manali delhi in 12-14 days
Please let me know if your group is booked or if your still open for travel buddies.
I will call you on the number mentioned.
        Cheers!

        • Gagan, how are you planning to commute? Are you driving or riding? I will mail you another number too in case that is not been connected.

    • Kishan, just for the re-confirmation, please make sure that you have in your mind that this is not a tour planned by tour operator. We are going as fun there and it is an open DoW tour cum meet. It is just like having Travel Partners from all parts if they are interested on the trip.

Nothing will be booked, so be ready for surprise and staying anywhere and everywhere… Anything that comes along will be shared. We will share a common pool of money shared by all members equally. Once pool finishes then we will re-pool. Tentative cost of taxi is about 75-80K as per our tour plans, so considering about 14 members, we will have it distributed to make it 16/17K per person. Then consider about 800 per day for food and lodging to make it 9600 for 12 days. Now, here travel to Srinagar and then Manali – Delhi will be additional cost.

You can call me on the number mentioned in the confirmation list members for any doubt.

      Regards
      Dheeraj

  13. Dheeraj ,all your efforts to guide traveler is really appreciated . I have been to Leh , Pangong and Nubra . Looking forward to explore other part . ( Next year ) . Thanks for this site and keep it up .

    Best

    • Tapan, as long as you are coming in with own car, no issues. Also, I do not see making it to 25 people so, you can tag along with us. I will be sharing some details soon with the final confirmations of all people by 31st July. Though it is just voluntary for this tour only where every member of the tour is required to support one or the other DoW Causes (details will be published soon in the community forums, may be in weeks time). It is not a big thing but small steps towards creating a difference in Himalayan lives 🙂

      • Thank you, Dheeraj. Truly appreciate your response. Count me in for whatever cause you’re advocating. Anything for the the Himalayas…Awaiting further inputs.
        Sincerely

Till now there are only people interested in either Taxi or Self Drive Car (refer confirmation list document) but there is no such restriction that it could only be for cars not bikes. If there could be 3-4 bikers we end up, then of course can join us too in the convoy of cars.

Regarding, cost and expenses and how we are planning to go over trip, please feel free to get in touch with me over phone. Though these things depend upon the final number of people we end up with, but will try to explain how we are taking over the whole plan.

    Hi Dheeraj.
First of all, I want to say best of luck for your ladakh trip. After a long wait, my trip to ladakh has been final. we, a family of 5 people will be going to ladakh from srinagar side and will be coming from manali side during last may or early june. I want to know the present condition of leh-manali highway and if there is any possibility of opening of manali-leh highway by that time or I have to change my plan? We are interested in visiting sham valley, nubra valley, pangong lake, and other monasteries. my roughly planned itinerary is:
Day1- katra to srinagar(we will visit vaishno devi also).Enjoy evening shows at mughal gardens and have a walk near dal lake.
Day2- srinagar local sightseeing. visit dal lake, mughal gardens, shankaracharya temple,hazratbal,etc.. and reserve a taxi to ladakh for next day.
    Day3- Srinagar-sonamarg-zozila-drass-kargil.
    Day4- kargil-lamayuru-leh.
Day5- arrange ilp and visit shey palace, thicksey monastery and hemis monastery.
    Day6- Sham valley tour.
Day7-Leh to pangong tso and pangong tso to nubra valley via shyok village route.(if this route will be accessible that time. otherwise come back to leh same day and proceed to nubra valley next day)
    Day8-nubra valley to leh.
    Day9-leh to keylong.
    Day10-Keylong to manali.
    Day11-manali local sightseeing.
    Day12-manali to delhi.

My itinerary has not been final. so I want suggestions whether it is correct or not. And please give me a list of drivers with their contact no. and list of cheap hotels in leh, nubra valley, pangong lake, kargil and keylong.

    • Hi Pushpam,

Thanks alot. I will suggest the following changes to your plan:

      Day6 – Leh – Nubra Valley
      Day7 – Nubra Valley – Leh
      Day8 – Leh – Pangong Tso – Leh

Rest looks good to me given the amount of time you have in hand.

For accommodation, check the nice, preferred list of accommodation options in entire Leh – Ladakh (Leh, Nubra Valley, Pangong Tso, Tso Moriri) including moderate and cheap budget hotels as well in the series of articles starting on the link here

For the leh – ladakh taxi union rate list 2012-13 including the contacts of some reliable taxi drivers within Leh – Ladakh, check the link here. You can get about 10-15% of discount by directly getting in touch with drivers and of course, talking in person rather on phone always help in bargaining more.

      Regards
      Dheeraj

      • Pushpam Choudhary on

Thanks Dheeraj for your reply. I want to know if inner line permits are also required for person below 18. If yes, then what are the id proofs for a 13 year old child.

    • Thank you so much for the wishes, and glad you checked it out!! I hope it proves to be successful one and all those people joining in get their hard efforts worth!!

  33. Hi Dheeraj,

    The program shared seem thrilling.
me with my three friends and my beauty car wants to join.
what formalities needs to be done for registering.
also share the charges for the same.

    Thanks

    • Charges are not yet finalized. Please stay tuned with the event at the Facebook at the link here. The charges and formalities will be shared once we have the complete group finalized because it will vary with the number of people on board. Also, I hope you are OK with the eligibility criteria. This is going to be very very hectic, so keep the expectations clear to everyone in your group so that they don’t first beat me up and then you 😉 … Which car do you have?

  34. Anshul Kaushik on

Please check your mail , The emailus button seems to have some problem please check I have mailed personally 😉

    • Debanjan, I sincerely feel families should not consider for the option 🙁 … It is way way to hectic. Even I feel some strange wave down my nerves when I read the whole route twice or thrice :D. I am seriously saying the whole route especially the last 5 days would take some doing even from best of the best!! Doing it family is not going to work here.

Seriously, sorry brother but definitely as I said I will be making more and more tours in the upcoming time to cater to the needs of easy going travellers as well as families else my wifey is gonna kick me out of home 😀

      • Debanjan Das. on

thanks for your reply but one thing i want to share with you,we(me,my wife and my daughter)are regular trekker and we used to take tough schdule and for that we prepare ourself physically for rest of the time when we are in city.As our only & only passion is mountain so we are ready to overcome anything and everything.just go through my facebook page and i belief it will prove my point.Beyond that every thing is your hand i don’t want to nagg.

        • Sure Debanjan, I just wanted to let you be aware of the fatigue and how hectic it can get. We can discuss over call, I will connect with you over phone through Facebook.

        • Hi Debanjan Da,
          Are going to this trip?
I’m also from Kolkata & I’ve already booked flgt tckts. Can we meet here?

  35. can i join with this tour? and what would be the cost including all(hotel, travel, food, vat/tax etc..) pls know me

    • Utpol, costing will not be decided unless we have some concrete list of people joining the tour. I am looking for maximum of 5 people in 5 taxis, may be few bikes who can ride with us if they do not have any issues. So, looking about MAX group size of 30-32 people who are fine with the idea of rough, tiresome, very hectic run over the high himalayas!!

Please subscribe to the Facebook Event and we will be pouring all the details there in!!

  36. Hi,
I am Nishanthe from Sri Lanka. Is it possible to ‘us’ to join the trip?
If the answer is YES, I would like to send you a longer email with more details.
    regards,
    -Nish

    • Hi Nishanthe,

Yes, it is possible to join for you guys. But, do consider the eligibility criteria. The trip is not going to be easy one. Consider it to be very hectic and tough and also you may find very very basic facilities at some of the places of stay. Forget luxury, not even standard things 🙂 … If that suits, shoot an email 😉

      Regards
      Dheeraj Sharma

  37. JATDEVTA SANDEEP on

    • Sandeep bhai, ye trip thoda zaada hectic hai. Koi bhi basic idea draw kar sakta hai but problem hai ki agar ise intimate karega aur thoda beginner level par hai trans himalayan region k liye ya long travel k liye to problem ho sakti hai. Kayade se thode rest days hone chahiye the ismein jo nhn daale gaye 😀
