Itinerary advice for North sikkim and pelling

Postby Paddy » Tue Jan 30, 2018 4:50 pm

Hi @soumen230213 and @getpackingvinod,

Hope you are doing great.
I need your advice on the following itinerary that I came up with for Apr 3rd/4th week:

Day-1 Gangtok and rest
Day-2 gangtok - Tsongmo lake - nathulla pass
Day-3 Gangtok-Lanchung (Covering places en route) - Stay at lamchung
Day-4 lanchung - Yumathang - Zero point - Lechun - Stay at Lenchun
Day-5 Lachen - Gurudongmar - Chungthang - Stay at Chungthang
Day-6 Chungthang-gangtok
Day-7 gangtok-blr

1) Is this itinerary fine or too relaxed/ too hectic? Also considering AMS!
2) Is pelling good to be included in this (Considering Apr)? If so, should I go to Pelling directly from Chungthang?
3) Do I need to book hotels in advance or can get better bargains directly? We have a kid in our group (5 yrs).
4) I pulled out taxi contact from another post. Any other good suggestions apart from thinlay namgyal?

Regards,
Pradeep

Hi Paddy,

My apologies for replying late.

Your itinerary is good and balanced. It is not very relaxed, and not too hectic also. North Sikkim is usually done as a 3 day trip from Gangtok, and they sell it as a package - permits + transport from Gangtok, accommodation and food (all 3 meals) because they are remote and mostly home stays and not hotels [your itinerary may be reversed though - first Lachen and gurdongmar lake and next Lachung & Yumthang valley]

Including Pelling in this would make it too hectic and would be too much. If you are planning to include Pelling, then skip Gurudongmar (last I heard is that army does not permit kids less than 10 years to visit. They took an undertaking from my friend before they permitted his kids to proceed after pleading with them)

You will be able to get hotels in Gangtok, but instead of searching, I'd recommend you book from trusted websites, since you have a kid with you.

Hi,

Thanks a lot for the suggestions. Actually I have 10 days now and was wondering how to balance it out.

This is what I came up with:

Day-1 21-Apr Reach Gangtok, rest Stay in Gangtok
Day-2 22-Apr Gangtok local Stay in Gangtok
Day-3 23-Apr Gangtok-Tsongmo-Nathula-Nathang-Zuluk-Aritar Stay in Aritar
Day-4 24-Apr Aritar-Singtam-Tintek-Dikchu-mangan-Lachung Stay in Lachung
Day-5 25-Apr Lachung-Yumathang-Zero point-Lachen Stay in Lachen
Day-6 26-Apr Lachen - Tsangu - Gurudongmar lake - gangtok Stay in Gangtok
Day-7 27-Apr Gangtok -Ravangla - Pelling Stay in Pelling
Day-8 28-Apr Pelling local sight seeing - Darjeeling Stay in Darjeeling
Day-9 29-Apr Darjeeling local Stay in Darjeeling
Day-10 30-Apr Darjeeling - Tiger hill sunrise - Bagdogra Airport

Few clarifications needed :

1) Day-3 : I wanted to cover south sikkim as well and was thinking its better to directly go from Nathula to Aritar, seeing places en-route. Stay overnight in Aritar. Is this fine?
2) Day-4 : Directly going from Aritar to Lachung or Lachen. Google map suggests less than 6hrs for the same and could be done?
3) Is it possible to skip Gangtok and instead reach pelling directly from Lachung or Lachen?

I have already booked flights and hence have 10 days in hand (21-apr to 30-apr).

Your guidance would help me a lot. Thank you.

Regards,
Pradeep

Aritar to Lachung may be a bit tough.. What you could do is, you go directly from Siliguri to Artar (5hrs) stay overnight at Aritar, next day, proceed to Zuluk, Baba Mandir, Tsomgo lake and reach Gangtok (permits for this route wil have to be arranged beforehand)

Then head to North Sikkim, get back to Gangtok, spend a day, if needed, and then head from there to Pelling, onwards to Darjeeling & home.

We covered a similar itinerary in 2015, may be you could consider following that, if it helps:

Day1 : NJP / IXB to Darjeeling
Day2 : morning Tiger hill sunrise, later sight seeing darjeeling; afternoon, darjeeling to pelling
Day 3: pelling sunrise. places around pelling; afternoon, to gangtok
Day 4: gangtok to lachen
Day 5: lachen - gurdongmar-lachen. onwards to lachung
Day 6: Lachung - yumthang - zero point - lachung; afternoon, proceed to gangtok
Day 7: gangtok to tsomgo, nathu la, baba mandir, gnathang valley, Zuluk
Day 8: Zuluk to Aritar (just 3 hrs)
Day 9: Aritar to IXB, fly back

You have one more day actually, extend it for the place you like, or may be head from Aritar to Kalimpong :p

Hi Vinod,

Thanks a lot. Based on all the info I gathered and your suggestions, I came up with a plan that's more or less what you suggested last.

Took one more day in Gangtok (Wanted to visit dharam chakra and also the ladies want to do shopping in Gangtok), Zuluk to Kalimpong and avoiding stay in Aritar, Kalimpong to bagdogra. Kindly let me know if this is fine.

Day-1 21-Apr Reach Darjeeling, rest
Day-2 22-Apr Tiger hills, local, pelling
Day-3 23-Apr Pelling local Gangtok
Day-4 24-Apr Gangtok-Lachen
Day-5 25-Apr Lachen-Tsangu-Gurudongar lake-Lachung
Day-6 26-Apr Lachung-Yumathang-Zero point-Gangtok
Day-7 27-Apr Gangtok local - Ramtek monastery
Day-8 28-Apr Gangtok-Tsongmo-Nathula-Zuluk
Day-9 29-Apr Zuluk-Aritar-kalimpong
Day-10 30-Apr Kalimpong-Bagdogra

Can you also let me know the ball park taxi charges for this (Xylo or Innova).?

Regards,
Pradeep

itinerary looks ok.

With a 5 year old child, Day 2, Day 5 and Day 9 may be a bit long, but not unmanageable.

You will have to take separate taxis for each of the sectors, hence I'm not sure of how much it will cost. in Nov 2015, with 5 ppl (2+3 sharing) we paid approx 75k for entire trip, including accommodation, 11 days 10 nights.

Hi Vinod,

Thank you.
She's 9 yrs old.

I was assuming Darjeeling-local s.s- Pelling - 1 Taxi
Entire Sikkim taxi till Kalimpong drop - 1 Taxi.
Kalimpong s.s and drop to Bagdogra - 1 Taxi.

I'l check with the taxi contacts you gave. Thanks a lot.

Pradeep
