Hi Dheeraj,

Thanks for starting this sticky thread. As usually really helps. We are planning to start on journey on Srinagar-Leh highway on May 7th. Does it look possible given that there has been record snowfall this winter?

Thanks,

Supreeth, I would really doubt on it this year with snow pouring evening now and hampering the snow clearance operations.

BRO about to reach Sonamarg soon after clearing snow on 12 km Gagangeer - Sonamrag of 434 KM long Srinagar - Leh Highway. As per BRO, this year Zojila Pass has about 30-32 feet of snow accumulation and it may take more than usual time to open the Srinagar - Leh Highway in 2017

Srinagar 20th March 2017: The snow clearance operation on 12 km Gagangeer - Sonamrag stretch of Srinagar - Leh highway is expected to reach Sonamarg by March 23rd, officials said on Sunday.

They said the operation was kick started by the Border Roads Organization (BRO) in the first week of March and has reached near Haji Kabar, 6 kms from Sonamarg market.

The operation was temporarily suspended due to inclement weather conditions. However, it has been re-started.
Captain Neeraj Kumar Singh, of BRO heading the operation told Greater Kashmir if the weather remains fair they would touch Sonamarg by March 23rd.
"It is the civil administration that has to take decision regarding allowing the vehicular movement up to Sonamarg after receiving green signal from BRO," he added.

Singh said after crossing Sonamarg their focus would be at Zojila stretch where 30 to 32 feet of snow has got accumulated due to huge snow avalanches in the area.

It’s in place to mention here that last year Srinagar-Sonamarg road was thrown open for vehicular traffic on March 31st. However, due to heavy snowfall in Zojila area this year the snow clearance operation may take more time to facilitate re-opening of this Srinagar-Leh highway this year.

t is monsoon time in general up there in North and at some parts of Manali - Leh Highway (like before Baralacha La) and Srinagar - Leh Highway (like before Kargil) you might need to face monsoon hassles but once you get closer to Ladakh, then Ladakh being rain shadow region is least affected by monsoon rains, though rains does reach Ladakh now but to minimum and mostly it might remains overcast conditions. There is no thumb rule of certainty about weather conditions but above is generally common pictures seen over last few years except ugly 2010 …

September is the best time to visit Ladakh with fall colors of nature and more stabilised roads.

Hi Dhirajji,

We are plannin trip to Leh via Sringar from 20th to 30th May, 2017 as per below itinerary.

20th May Arrival to Sringar, and transfer Pahalgam

21st May Sight seeing in Pahalgam

22nd May Start after breakfast from Pahalgam to Sonmarg via Sringar ( do some local sight setting e.g Avantipur ruins/temple, Nagin lake and reach sonmarg evening).
Do you know if there is any timing restriction to travel from Sringar to Sonmarg during evening for civilians ?
Is this plan feasible ?
I wanted to avoid over night stay at Sringar.

23rd May, Sonmarg to Mulbekh , i guess here i need to change from Srinagar to vehicle to Leh vehicle to allow local sightseeing in Leh.
Do you know if i can get another vehicle from Sonmarg for Leh registration.

,24th May Mulbekh to Leh on the way visit Lamayuru – Leh via Alchi, Gurudwara Pathar Saheb & Magnetic point. Overnight in hotel at Leh.
Does Mulbekh have good options for Stay and vegetarian food ?

,May 25: Leh AM Rest PM local Sighseeing of Hall of Fame, Shanti Stupa, Leh palace and Market. Overnight hotel at Leh
,May 26: Leh – Khardung La – Diskit – Hunder ( Nubra Valley). Head for Nubra Valley and stay overnight at Nubra valley.
,May 27: Hunder – Sumur – Khardung La – Leh. Overnight hotel at Leh
,May 28: Leh – Changla pass - Pangong Lake. Overnight in Camp near Pangong Tso lake
,May 29: Pangong Tso Lake – Leh via Thiksey monastery & 3 Idiot school. Overnight hotel at Leh
,May 30: Early morning departure transfer to Airport.

Could you comment if above itinerary is ok, or some changes are needed., am i missing any good places at Srinagar , leh ?
