Here is the first update for the season ...

Srinagar, March 1 2016: The strategic 434 km long Srinagar-Leh Highway, the only road linking the Ladakh region with rest of Jammu and Kashmir is likely to open early this year.

The likely early opening of the road is mostly credited to less snowfall this year and the dry weather.

Beacon officials told Rising Kashmir that the snow clearance work on the highway was started on February 24 and is going on. The highway was closed in December last year following heavy snowfall. Border Roads Organization (BRO) officials said that the snow clearance operation from Gagengar to Gumri started on Wednesday, adding that the snow clearance operation will be completed by mid March and the road is expected to be thrown open by ending March.

Pertinently last year the road was officially opened on May 13.

Zojilla Pass on the highway which experiences heavy snowfall and remain closed for several months during winter is considered to be the most difficult and avalanche prone terrain. However this year due to the less snowfall during winters the road clearance operation in high swing it is likely to take less time to clear the as compared to previous years.

Reports said that nearly 8-10 ft of snow has accumulated along Zojila Pass while as 3-4 ft of snow along Sonamarg-Baltal road.

"The snow clearance work has been started and will be completed around mid march and the road is likely to be thrown open by ending March this year subject to good weather," Chief Engineer Beacon, Brig A K Das told Rising Kashmir.

Braving the bone-chilling cold, BRO has pressed dozens of its workers and snow-cutters into service to clear the Zojilla Pass, Das said.

He said that the toughest work to clear snow remains the 30-km-long-stretch up to zero point of Zojilla from Sonamarg.

He said that if weather continues to support, the road is all set to open by March end this year.

Officials added that Project Beacon of Border Road Organization is responsible for clearing the road up to zero point near Zojilla from Sonamarg, while the Vijayak of BRO clears the road from the Kargil side.

Srinagar - Leh Highway is expected to open by 20 March if no further snowfall happens up there. All thanks to less snowfall this year :) :)... Still, we can assume April first week to be better bet as by then the roads will be stabilised too with initial snow slides.

SRINAGAR: Due to less snowfall this winter, the highway connecting Ladakh region with Kashmir and road to Gurez near the Line of Control (LoC) in north Kashmir will reopen soon provided there is no fresh snowfall.
However, it will take more time to put through the historic Mughal road, linking Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region.
Official sources said that snow clearance operation was going on a war footing on both sides of the Zojila pass on the Srinagar-Leh highway, which has been closed since December last year due to snow and slippery road conditions.
It will take a week or so to clear the snow on the strategically road, they said, adding that if there is no fresh snowfall or avalanches, the road will reopen soon. There was less snowfall this winter and the mercury has also witnessed sharp increase now.
Snow clearance operation on Bandipora-Gurez road was also going on war footing. If there is no fresh snowfall, the snow clearance operation will be completed within next few days, the sources said adding normal traffic will be resumed any time next week after remaining suspended from December last year.
This will be for the first time that Ladakh highway and Gurez road will reopen in the month of March, they said.

SRINAGAR: The snow has been cleared from the strategic 434 kms Srinagar Leh highway which was closed to traffic movement in December last due to snowfall, slippery conditions and slides in Zojila area.

The high way used to remain closed for more than five months from December to April from Sonamarag to Drass. The authorities used to clear the snow from the highway in May every year. But this year due to less snowfall in the area Border Roads Organisation ( BRO ) and Vijayak have done it two months ahead, thus connecting two ends of the highway, Drass and Sonamarag.

Haji Anayat Ali of Kargil, said that if weather conditions allow, the highway would be thrown open after March 20 this year.

Further delay in opening of Srinagar - Leh Highway, now BRO expects it to open around mid of April but weather conditions in coming two weeks will have the last say again.

The Srinagar-Leh road opening is likely to get delayed this year due to fresh heavy snowfall and unfavorable weather conditions.

Official sources said opening of the strategic 434 km long Srinagar-Leh road which remains closed during winters is likely to get delayed due to bad weather conditions and fresh heavy snowfall this month.

The road was closed in December last year due to which the Ladakh area continues to remain cut off from the rest of the world.

Earlier the Border Roads Organization officials had informed that the road will be thrown open by March end after the completion of snow clearance work.

The road was being thrown open for traffic early as the area along the Zojilla which usually experiences heavy snowfall had received less snow this year.

"The snow clearance work on the Sgr-Leh road was started early March by the Border Roads organization and its project Vijayak had cleared a large stretch of the road, however the recent snowfall in the area has again closed the road," Border Roads Officials told Rising Kashmir.

A senior official of 32BRTF told Rising Kashmir that snow clearance was started on both sides of the highway by Project Vijayak (From Drass to Zero Point) and BRO (Sonamarg-Zero Point) had cleared most of the road, however the recent snowfall halted the work, adding that the work will be restarted to make the highway motorable.

He said if weather permits the snow clearance work will be completed by April 15 and after that the road will be thrown open.

Hi Deeraj,

Appreciate your effort and dedication in keeping us all updated about the conditions.

We are a group of 6 bikers planning a trip to leh from delhi to leh via srinagar. We plan to start from delhi on the 15th of May. Do you think the srinagar leh highway will be open by then? And if yes, is it safe for bikers to travel during that time?

If yes, do you think it is safe for riders to take the route during that time because most experts suggest bikers to wait till June - July to plan their trip?

Appreciate your effort and dedication in keeping us all updates and informed. :)
