DoW - Causes are here... A Step Towards Responsible Travel from DoW

In the continuous efforts of DoW to promote Responsible Travel in Himalayas and materialize our vision of helping Himalayan lives directly, in this article I will detail out the soul of DoW which we call DoW - Causes. I will also try to explain how these causes will work, how one can connect with these causes to support or benefit the lives of local Himalayan people including other necessary details.

1. What are DoW - Causes?
DoW - Causes is a kind of social responsibility initiative from DoW Community where a traveler/tourist is expected to contribute in his/her own small individual capacity measures. We expect that the members of our community who will be visiting various parts of Himalayas in time to come, will try to support these small, small causes explained in the subsequent posts in order to provide direct help to the people of Himalayas and help them grow in their own sense and space.

2. How does DoW - Causes work & How can I be a part of it?
There are two dimensions where we will be working with DoW - Causes. One is Direct Dimension, where any member of DoW - Adventure Club WILL be directly involved with the cause along with others participating in it. And the other one is the Indirect Dimension, where any member of DoW - Adventure Club WILL NOT be involved directly but he/she may provide directions & help to someone interested to support any of our DoW - Causes. Let me explain in detail:

Direct Dimension: Most of us know that DoW - Adventure Club is planning a have Ladakh and Chandratal Meets in coming September with some members of the community and other tourists tagging along with us. Here, we will not just be traveling together rather:

Firstly, each and everyone in the tour will be supporting one of the DoW causes as mandatory which are related to donating common medicines in local dispensaries, stationary items including books required in such rural schools, household/harsh winter need woolens or equipment, etc.. Once the group reaches the place each member traveling will responsibly hand over such things to the respective dispensaries, schools, local villagers who are in need. This way we wish to plant that sense of traveling responsibly & feeling connected to the place. If it really touches someone out of the club traveling with us, they can wish to join in even next time or can come with 2 more friends or educate them on their personal tours as well.

Secondly, on all these tours we will not be taking anything from any operator rather we will be directly linking up with Himalayan lives in these remote parts. For examples: we will be staying in home-stays/small guest houses run by local people, we will be hiring porters/local villagers on the trek rather some guide outside for our treks/hikes to large extent (know it can’t be feasible always but wherever we can we will do), we will be eating with small dhabhas/tea stalls mostly, we will be hiring local drivers of the towns rather getting some travel agent involved. After coming back all this data will be published back in the community with respective contacts in an easy and organized manner. This way once one of our group comes back we will promote such local villagers so that they get the direct benefits rather some middle men robbing them of it.

Finally, on similar grounds, we will be carrying out some hikes/treks for cleanliness along with locals out there may be for a day on our tours, though it may not be true for all tours. I know a local group who organizes the same for Chandratal every year. So, we will try to tie up with such groups too to spread the word of Responsible and Effective Traveling to Himalayas...

So, any one associated with DoW Himalayan Meets will be supporting DoW - Causes directly and mandatory.

Indirect Dimension: In this indirect dimension, we will be supporting people who are interested to support these causes on their own by providing the local contacts of dispensaries, schools, local villagers, etc.. who will be co-coordinating with DoW community to help these causes get life in Himalayas.

We will try to educate members in DoW Community about these causes as well who are otherwise just interested in the Itinerary Advice sections for fixing their itineraries. If they feel to be interested in the DoW Causes on their own tours as well, we will provide them the local contacts of dispensaries, schools, local villagers, etc.. so that they can execute them and Travel Responsibly.

This way people coming over to DoW Community who can travel in economic and effective manner with the help of information present in the DoW will be able to directly support or benefit the lives of those local villagers somewhere in the Himalayas.

3. How do I find about when does DoW - Adventure Club's Meets to Himalayas are happening?
Simplest way is to look at our DoW - Travel Calendar, where all our Workshops, Mega Meets, Mini Meets will be highlighted and published. Along with that, there will be a dedicated thread for each such event in the forum: DoW Adventure Club & Community -> Travel Meets & Workshops

4. Can I ask someone else or member of DoW to buy items for these causes and carry them when they go on tours?
No. It is a step towards Responsible Travel and we do not want any kind of delegation and support rather we want everyone to understand the meaning of Traveling Responsibly and spread the message in their peers as well. And the first step is what you take on your OWN that is to go to the local shop to buy these medicines, stationary or other items.

If you are going with DoW on some Himalayan Meet, you yourself will be required to buy the items corresponding to the DoW - Cause you are interested to support for example stationary or medicines, you will be the only one carrying them along and finally you yourself will distribute them. No other member of the DoW Community will buy it for you or carry it for you or even distribute for you :) ...

Only in future when we will be connecting more causes towards distributions of items which are hard to find such as Solar Lanterns, Solar Cookers, etc.. in remote parts of Himalayas, we will provide just the references or links of online/offline store from where you can buy such items but that too you will be carrying yourself and distributing them on your own.

5. Can I just donate money or items for the Causes?
No, it is mandatory that you buy your own items from the shop you know, carry them on your own and distribute them on your own among the local Himalayan people. There is no option to donate anything, neither money nor items. We will not be accepting any items in any form from the people who are not traveling themselves.

The whole sense of this initiative is to make you feel the local attachment with the place you Travel not just being there and doing sightseeing.

6. Is DoW or these Causes associated with some NGO?
No, the message should be clear that DoW is to support Responsible Travel NOT an NGO. Responsible Travel happens when you travel yourself to the places, connect with the nature, the people, the culture, the lives and where you can support these causes yourself.

7. How effective these DoW - Cause are or will be?
It is quite premature stage to answer that but still I will say, in terms of effectiveness it shall do good, god willingly because I have done this through DoW Blog successfully for the past couple of years by promoting such lives in Ladakh and Spiti to some extent and actually reaching out to people to get services from such local villagers directly. Many local I know now gets repeated business out of it and their lives have transformed to some extent and that’s where lies a sense of creating that little difference in Himalayan lives. But, that was just in single capacity and the community vision is aligned to DoW’s original vision. I distribute candies, stationary, medicines I carry with myself among locals in Himalayas and it has worked wonders for me.

The idea is to bring out the small, small individual capacities together to really create the difference in effective manner.

DoW - Cause 1 | GYAAN 500

Postby dheerajsharma14 » Mon Aug 19, 2013 9:14 pm

GYAAN 500

Here comes the first of the DoW - Causes, which we prefer to call it "GYAAN 500", which will be supporting the aids and material required in schools such as school stationary to start with. In future, when we have sufficient local contacts who can pass onto us the needs of such local schools in the remote villages of Himalayas then we will also be distributing other things such as Books, Notebooks, School Bags, etc.. on need basis.

Image

In this cause, you are supposed to carry with you a list of school stationary items that should sum up to approximately Rs 500. This amount of Rs 500 is the least limit which is mandatory for everyone traveling in for DoW - Himalayan Meet cum Tour. But in case you want to distribute more, please feel free to do so. People traveling on their own but interested to support this DoW - Cause do not have any least or upper limit and they can just donate/distribute in their own comfortable limits.

You will be buying this list of items yourself from any local store nearby you, carry them along with you and finally you will be distributing them among the local schools or children in the remote village of Himalayas. Like I said earlier, in the first phase of this cause "GYAAN 500" we are only focusing on stationary items and following is the list of items that we have in our mind.

1. A box of 10 Natraj or Camlin Pencils is priced at Rs 30-40. Some boxes have Erasers as free, some have both Sharpeners and Erasers. Hence, variation in cost.
2. A box of 20 Natraj Sharpeners is priced at Rs 55.
3. A box of 20 Apsara Erasers is priced at Rs 35.
4. A box of 10 Natraj Pencil Colors is priced at Rs 15.
5. A box of 12 Camel Wax Crayons is priced at Rs 10.
6. A pack of 10 Reynolds 045 Pens is priced at Rs 45.

Hence, based on the above rates you can carry the below bundle with you which will cost you about Rs 500:

1. 6-7 boxes of Pencils = Rs 240
2. 1 box of Sharpeners = Rs 55
3. 1 box of Erasers = Rs 35
4. 5 boxes of Pencil Colors = Rs 75
5. 5 boxes of Wax Crayons = Rs 50
6. 1 pack of Reynolds 045 Pens = Rs 45

Please note that these are prices based on local nearby stores and prices may vary from store to store. In case, you will be carrying more quantity it is better to get hold of some whole seller rather the local store or you can bargain with your local store to provide best rates so that you can carry more quantity within Rs 500.

DoW - Cause 2 | CURE 500

Postby dheerajsharma14 » Tue Aug 20, 2013 1:32 am

CURE 500

Here comes the second of the DoW - Causes, which we prefer to call it "CURE 500", which will be supporting the general day to day medicines required in local dispensaries of remote villages of Himalayas. In future, when we have sufficient local contacts who can pass onto us the needs of such local dispensaries in such remote villages of Himalayas then we will align our purchase of medicines accordingly.

In this cause, you are supposed to carry with you a list of general day to day that should sum up to approximately Rs 500.

You will be buying this list of items yourself from any local medical store nearby you, carry them along with you and finally you will be distributing them among the local dispensaries in the remote village of Himalayas. Like I said earlier, in the first phase of this cause "CURE 500" we are only focusing on general day to day medicines and following is the list of items that we have in our mind.

1. A strip of 15 pain killers, Combiflam or Flexon is priced at Rs 13.
2. A strip of 10 anti-allergic medicine, Cetrizine is priced at Rs 10.
3. A strip of 15 mild fever medicine, Calpol is priced at Rs 15.
4. A strip of 10 loose motion or diarrhea medicine, Dependal-M is priced at Rs 5.
5. A strip of 20 vitamin B-complex medicine, Becosules is priced at Rs 20.
6. A strip of 10 nausea & vomiting medicine, Domstal is priced at Rs 34.
7. A strip of 30 flatulence, indigestion, acidity or gastric problem medicine, Rantac is priced at Rs 15.
8. A tube for bruises, cuts, burns, etc.. , Soframycin is priced at Rs 30.
9. Betadine too helps for bruises, cuts, burns, etc..

Disclaimer– Well medicines listed here are just suggestions as it suits most people and one should always consult your doctor before taking any of these. Anyways these are listed here for distributing them to local dispensaries in the villages NOT to the people directly. Hence, doctors in those dispensaries will be prescribing them accordingly if required at all. We just have to submit them in local dispensaries.

Hence, based on the above rates you can carry the below bundle with you which will cost you about Rs 500:

1. 5 strips of Combiflam or Flexon = Rs 65
2. 5 Strips of Cetrizine = Rs 50
3. 5 Strips of Calpol = Rs 75
4. 15 Strips of Dependal-M = Rs 75
5. 3 Strips of Becosules = Rs 60
6. 2 strips of Domstal = Rs 68
7. 5 Strips of Rantac = Rs 75
8. 1 tube or pack of Soframycin = Rs 30

Please note that these are prices based on local nearby medical stores and prices may vary from store to store. In case, you will be carrying more quantity it is better to get hold of some whole seller rather the local store or you can bargain with your local store to provide best rates so that you can carry more quantity within Rs 500.

DoW - Cause 3 | WARMTH 500

Postby dheerajsharma14 » Wed Aug 21, 2013 11:58 pm

WARMTH 500

Here comes the third of the DoW - Causes, which we prefer to call it "WARMTH 500", which will be supporting the woolens required by local people in remote villages of Himalayas which require such woolens to survive in the harsh winters. I understand they are used to it and have their own means of getting warmth BUT an extra layer of woolens may still provide some or the other kind of warmth to them.

In this cause, you are supposed to carry with you NEW woolens NOT old ones, that should sum up to approximately Rs 500. This amount of Rs 500 is the least limit which is mandatory for everyone traveling in for DoW - Himalayan Meet cum Tour. But in case you want to distribute more, please feel free to do so. People traveling on their own but interested to support this DoW - Cause do not have any least or upper limit and they can just donate/distribute in their own comfortable limits as they can.

You must be wondering what you can buy in for Rs 500 as for woolens. Well to name a few, you can walk / drive down to any army store near by you (in Delhi/NCR we have Sadar or Gopinath Bazaar) and cash in for

1. Standard Army Balaclava for about Rs 100-120
2. Inner Thermal Suit for about Rs 300-400
3. Standard Army Socks for about Rs 100-120
4. Standard Army Gloves for about Rs 100-120
5. Or anything that you can think about or buy within your own comfortable limit that will help a local Himalayan fight cold conditions in remote parts of Himalayas

Please note that these are prices based on local nearby and prices may vary from store to store. In case, you will be carrying more quantity it is better to get hold of some whole seller rather the local store or you can bargain with your local store to provide best rates so that you can carry more quantity within Rs 500.

Well, if any how you want to carry OLD woolens with you then please carry them which are not torn and I feel it shall do good too.

Postby dheerajsharma14 » Fri Aug 23, 2013 11:38 pm

SUPPORT UNLIMITED

In the final cause of the first phase of DoW - Causes, we introduce you to "SUPPORT UNLIMITED". It is actually not a cause directly but serving the best practices and ideas defined in the article: Responsible Travel in Himalayas, you can actually support a cause in its OWN ...

We are trying to build the Support System of educating peers, family and other people with these practices of Responsible Travel that will help in a long way in controlling various things in Himalayas and helps the local people grow in their own space. If you can educate others you know or other travel mates traveling with the practices defined in the article then nothing like it!!

Please feel free to share your ideas as well in the main thread for Responsible Travel and what else one can do to actually help as well as protect the Himalayas.

Finally, please feel free to provide your feedback or suggestions or any queries under the thread: DoW - Causes | Feedback & Suggestions

How can I carry out DoW Causes

Postby dheerajsharma14 » Sun May 04, 2014 10:36 am

What we suggest in terms of execution of DoW - Causes:

Well, I will suggest best will be to do in some remote villages. For example: Hunder, Turtuk, Mulbekh, Hanle, Alchi, Likir, Pin Valley, Rangrik, Hurling, Nako even, Shialkhar, Moorang, Geyu Mummy etc.. These are villages that fall on the route and where people in general do not stop overnight in large numbers. They also lack the infra or availability of such things. Hence, best is to pick any random small village on the route you are taking on that very day.

There is no need to have contact of anyone and anywhere for executing these causes. For GYAAN - 500, you can actually walk in to any of the primary school, have a word with teachers / head master up there. They, in all probability, will greet you with smiles and warmth and will help you distribute the stuff in the school by organizing or even calling children of the school from the near by village (if holiday). You MUST distribute the stuff yourself and stay away from handing over to anyone individually. Executing these causes on your own and seeing smiles running around when you do so, is actually the spirit of DoW Causes. This way only you feel connected with this feeling and in future remain connected :) :) ...

So, any small remote village you see like Turtuk, Hunder, Tangste, Shey, Phyang, Nimmu, Alchi, Likir, Hemis, Tirith, etc.. (except places like Leh, Srinagar, Kargil, Drass which are much like towns), there are primary schools where you can walk in and distribute this stuff.

Regarding CURE - 500, there isn't any option other than handing over the medicines to head nurse or doctor at the local dispensary in these small villages. Sometimes various medical camps are setup in villages where such medicines can be distributed too. Finally, there are dhabhas, remote ones like on Sarchu, Pang, Zingzing Bar, etc.. on Manali - Leh Highway. There after writing about the medicines and for what they are used, one can put them there so that travelers in need and don't have them can use it, when needed.

Re: DoW - Causes | A Step Towards Responsible Travel

Postby dheerajsharma14 » Sun Nov 16, 2014 11:41 am

TOYS & SMILES

Here comes the fourth of the DoW - Causes, which we prefer to call it "TOYS & SMILES", which involve distributing toys among the children of remote villages in Himalayas. Nothing better than a Toy can bring a smile to a kid's innocent face, be it any part of the world. So, in our endeavors to spread smiles in Himalayas we propose to distribute Toys among kids once you travel to these remote villages of Himalayas. You can always buys some toys for about Rs 500-600 worth considering a cost of Pizza for us. Also, we all, especially the ones with families having kids, have some old toys kept in good conditions which our kid stops playing with them.

We can carry these toys along with us on our trips to Himalayas and distribute them among the children up there to spread the smiles on their faces. You can walk in to villages yourself, pay a visit to the houses up there and ask for children to distribute them. Your hotels or taxi guys can help you find such houses or children in this respect. You can also visit a primary school or an aanganwaadi to spread smiles in this way.

It will be much better if the toys or games could be more educational and meaningful which helps in building the knowledge/education too up there with different but unique means not available to them. Mostly, these kids play with their own DIY toys made of stones, rocks or old wood, etc.. So, imparting new and fun ways of learning by making them available to them can definitely have good impact in longer run.

This gesture from you in the form of DoW Cause | TOYS & SMILES can lead a wonderful change in kids up there. Please do not forget to share your story of executing any of the DoW Causes up here in this community so as to motivate others to do the same when they travel :)
