There are always two sorts of challenges in front of a normal traveller. When I say normal traveller, I literally mean a married person. So, do I mean unmarried people are abnormal? Yes, because they have POWER/AUTHORITY to go ANYWHERE. And as far as I know only abnormal people have POWERS :D .

Now, the two challenges are, 1st convince family to go for a trip and 2nd on finalizing the place.

I was keen on going to Prashar Lake near Mandi in Himachal Pradesh. However, my better half was not very keen on going there. Somehow she saw very good rates of flights to Srinagar and simultaneously I came to know that Gulmarg has recently received snow fall.

No 2nd thought. Flights booked, hotel searched and locked. There was no point pondering about it. Zip zap, all done. The trip was finalized for 3 nights/4 days in Gulmarg only.

Here also, you have to convince that when we have few days in hand, it’s better to stay at one place rather than staying at different places. I insisted on Gulmarg, since we have never witnessed this much snow. And we wanted to enjoy snow. Srinagar had nothing at this time. I was not sure if autumn season had arrived completely or it has passed. So, it was Gulmarg for 3 nights. Stay included of B’fast and Dinner.

23rd Nov 2017 - Day 1

Flight was of 8am from Delhi. We were at the airport at 6am. One thing amazed me is that people are going abroad these day by showing tickets on their mobile, however for Srinagar we had to carry hard copy! Check-in done, security done, sat in the flight at 7:24am. Met a media person on flight and he suggested that it’s better you visit few places in Srinagar and then go for Gulmarg for any which ways, check-in time is 2pm. Flight departed on time and landed on time in Srinagar.

Came out of the airport and booked prepaid taxi which would show us few places in Srinagar and let us have brunch on the way to Gulmarg. The temperature was freezing, for us specially, who flew from Delhi to Srinagar (From 23dc to 5dc). Sat in the taxi and started the journey. No doubt, hospitality of Kashmir people is unbeatable. First we went to Botanical Garden around 11am. Before entering the garden, we had hot tea in the parking area. Not many flowers were there though. Few trees with yellow leaf. The weather was gloomy with sun behind clouds. Spent some good time there with family as it was first visit for all of us. And yes, Kashmir is different from Uttarakhand and Himachal.

Then around 12 we left for Shikara Boat ride. Some of us waited while others went for a ride. I was one of them who did not go and I again had hot tea from a Punjabi shop. Now, having a hot cup of tea while gazing the Dal Lake was an experience.

Having done that, we started for Gulmarg directly, it was already 1pm. We had brunch at one of the restaurant on the way. By 3pm we were at the Hotel Roosewood. The temperature was around 0dc. Checked into the hotel and settled in our room. But before doing anything else, everybody wanted to play with snow. So, we came out and did that. It was all white as far as we could see. The hotel offered us complimentary high tea, which was nice of them. Then after some laze around in room we had sumptuous dinner. Everybody was dead tired now and we retired for the day.

24th Nov 2017 - Day 2

Last night temperature was -1.8DC. But the rooms were cozy due to heater. We had two rooms and they were in front of each other. Occupancy was little. Not many tourists were there as the season was low. Having a cup of tea at a place and weather like this is mandatory to enjoy. Drank few rounds of tasty tea beside window with a view. Plan was to go for Gondola ride, which would start at around 10:30am since it’s a low season. So, everybody got ready for breakfast by 09:00am. The sunlight was incising through restaurant window and we were enjoying it. The big large windows of the restaurant were good enough for a marvelous view while gorging the delicacies. By 10:30am we were done with the breakfast and ready to go for Gondola ride. The hotel guys arranged a taxi for the entire day, in which he would wait for us till we return from our Gondola trip and if time permits, he would show us other places as well.

Got off from taxi at the ticker counter. Boots were taken on rent for snow. Tickets were bought. Photos were clicked before boarding the car. In all this, the time was already 1200am. The best things was, it was a sunny day. Finally we boarded the Gondola. The view down below was amazing, where everything was white. Now since me and my wife were going till 2nd phase, everybody else got off at phase 1, and we sat in the 2nd Gondola to reach Apharwat Peak(13000ft).

By 1227pm we were out in the sunshine at Apharwat. Came out of the station and were left with Awe. It was an astounding view, with snow covered mountains and vast 180DC view of Himalayan range. I had never seen this wide view of Himalayan range with snow on the peaks. It was like somebody has thrown salt over them to make a line. I kept clicking and clicking. Walked a bit through heavy snow, to reach a higher level, for a clearer view. I wish we could go further up to the lake, however it was more 2kms ahead and that was impossible. Stayed there for half-n-hr. Clicked many photos and got on the Gondola for return ride up to phase 1.

By 0130pm we were at the place where all the shops were and snow bikes were parked. It was 0140pm when rest of the family went for snow bike ride and I was sitting & sipping hot tea and having a chat with the local. Everybody came back by 0240pm. Of course the ride was good and the view were even more good. It was getting cold by the passing of time, since sun was going down. We all had some Maggie and hot Tea before our return Gondola ride. By 0329pm we were down at the starting point. Returned the rented boots and asked the taxi guy what else he can show us. Well, he said he will show us whatever he can today, to make our day.

He took us to Drung, a small waterfall coming out from Power Project Plant. To reach this place we had to come all the way down to Tangmarg and from there a road is dissect down below for Drung. The valley view of village was amazing. The weather was very cold. When he stopped the car near the waterfall and when I stepped out, it was biting cold. For the wind was coming after touching the cold water. We could not stay near the waterfall for more than 5 mins and waited for driver, for he was having tea nearby.

He then took us to Handicraft shop, which was way beyond Tangmarg, towards Srinagar. Shopping was done by the ladies at the shop. And finally by 0730pm we were at the hotel. We sat at the reception only and chatted about the day. The time was already 0800pm and everybody was hungry. So we decided to hit the room post dinner only. Had sumptuous dinner and went back to our rooms and called it off.
