Chandra Taal and Suraj Taal

Postby viraj27 » Sat Apr 19, 2014 5:47 pm

Hello all..

I am.planning to go for a bike trip in Lahaul and Spiti valley. My plan is :
24 June:Reach Manali rent bikes and overnight at Solang
25: Solang to Grumphu
26: Grumphu to Chandra Taal and overnight at Chandra taal
27: Chandra Taal to Kaza
28: Kaza and overnight at Losar
29: Losar to Keylong
30: Keylong to Baralacha La Suraj Tal and Keylong
1: Keylong to Manali

Can anyone please suggest the feasibility of the plan. Will it be too hectic?
We are 2 pax and will rent 2 bikes.
What are the road conditions in all these areas ?
And from.what all I have read here the season would be good. Any other updates ?
Also..any other suggestions for the same.
Thanks :D

@viraj27, welcome to DoW Community !!

Instead of Gramphu, go over and stay at either Sissu OR Khoksar PWD Rest House. Sissu has Hotel Triveni. Gramphu does not have anything to stay. Also, I will suggest that best thing will be that you do it in reverse order which will help you acclimatize best and use your number of days in hand very effectively too. You should follow something like below:

25: Solang to Jispa
26: Jispa - Deepak Tal - Suraj Tal - Baralacha La - Jispa
27: Jispa - Gramphu - Battal - Chandratal
28: Chandratal - Kunzum Pass - Ki - Kibber - Kaza
29: Kaza - Hikkim - Komik - Langza - Kaza
30: Kaza - Dhangkar - Dhangkar Lake - Pin Valley - Kaza
1: Kaza to Manali

Roads from Gramphu to Battal to Chandratal / Kunzum Pass are very much NO ROADS, just rocks / boulders on which you will ride. Rest roads are fine expect few KMs on either side of Rohtang Pass.

Season should be good in June end and passes will be open.

In that case, you can do following to ease out things:

30: Kaza - Dhangkar - Dhangkar Lake - Pin Valley - Tabo
1: Tabo - Geyu Mummy - Tabo - Kaza / Losar
1: Kaza / Losar - Kunzum Pass - Rohtang Pass - Manali

Temperature will be pleasant enough in June end types. Road should be motorable, Chandratal link road all the way being motorable is 75:25 in favour of being open :)

Bikes should be good. I hope you have some experience else be ready for some extreme adventure especially on Gramphu to Battal - Chandratal

Batal to Chandratal might not be open. Be prepared to walk half the distance or more if needed.

Dear All,

After some research from my side have come down to following plan:

D1: Manali rent bike check tents and etc and enroute to solang or somewhere more further near rohtang ( If there is any such place)
D2: That place to Keylong
D3: Keylong to Baralacha la surajtaal deepak taal and Jispa
D4: Jispa to Chattru
D5: Chattru to Batal and overnight at Chandra Taal
D6: Chandrataal to Batal and onwards to Losar
D7: Losar to Kaza and Kaza sightseeing
D8: Kaza Komik Langza Kaza
D9: Kaza Dhankar Nako
D10: Nako Mud Pin Valley and Losar
D11: Losar to Manali

So I have the following query about the route:
1. Is there any such accommodation option available between Solang but before Rohtang ?
2. Feasibility of Plan?
3. Bike motorable road conditions ?
4. Does Kaza sightseeing include Kibber Key or something else?
5. Approx Kms for D4-D8
6. Accommodation options in Lanza Komik ?
7. Bike repair shop locations in the whole plan ?
8. Any other places worth visit which can be included in the plan

The number of days are fixed so cant change that. Suggestions if any welcome about the route and places.

Thanks and Regards,
Viraj

Answering selective questions:
1. No. Stay at Solang.
3. Should be okay except Batal - Chandratal route which I'm not very sure of.
7. None. Manali - Keylong - Kaza are the only places where you can find reliable support.

Viraj (@viraj27), first comments on your itinerary and modified one below:

D1: Manali rent bike and stay at Solang Valley. PLEASE don';t ascend high from Solang on first day itself, too risky.
D2: Solang Valley to Jispa (No point staying in Keylong which is like a town, better stay close to nature just about 20 KMs ahead that is Jispa)
D3: Jispa to Baralacha la surajtaal deepak taal and Jispa
D4: Jispa to Battal (there is no place to stay at Chattru)
D5: Batal and overnight at Chandra Taal (even if the road is not completely open, since you will start from Battal it will give you enough time to reach Chandratal and stay there)
D6: Chandrataal to Batal and then to Kaza / Ki / Kibber (why waste a day staying in Losar when you can easily reach Kaza or Ki - Kibber this very day)
D7: Kaza sightseeing
D8: Kaza Hikkim - Komik - Langza Kaza
D9: Kaza - Dhangkar - Pin Valley - Tabo
-- Keep it easy, remove Nako which seems unnecessary here.
D10: Tabo - Kaza / Losar
D11: Kaza / Losar - Manali

1. Is there any such accommodation option available between Solang but before Rohtang ?
2. Feasibility of Plan?
8. Any other places worth visit which can be included in the plan

No itinerary adjusted above.

3. Bike motorable road conditions ?

Will be a bit challenging but doable.

4. Does Kaza sightseeing include Kibber Key or something else?

Ki, Kibber, Gette, Tashigang, Hikkim, Komik, Langza

6. Accommodation options in Lanza Komik ?

Many home stays are available

7. Bike repair shop locations in the whole plan ?

Mainly at Keylong and Kaza

Any tentative idea about opening of Kunzum so that I can enter Spiti Valley.
