Bikes Rented Outside Leh Banned in Ladakh

Postby dheerajsharma14 » Wed May 14, 2014 5:16 pm

Guys, there has been lot of talks around the rules of bikes hired outside Leh which will not be allowed inside Ladakh for sightseeing purposes starting this year. As per our sources in Leh we had a word with, this is true and starting the season of 2014, bikes which are rented outside Leh - Ladakh (ARTO, Leh) will not be allowed for sightseeing purposes in Ladakh region except Tso Moriri and Tso Kar lakes which have been exempted from this rule.

Many of the Manali Rental Shops have agreed and Leh Bike Rental Association has written back the responses to Delhi guys too in reply to their concerns.

However, please NOTE that this rule is yet to be seen into effect and a lot of doubts or things will get clear as the roads (Manali - Leh and Srinagar - Leh) will open this year and people start taking bikes into Leh. I know there are many iffs and buts here, and that's why I have started this thread to discuss them under single thread and also keep updating the rules/process which is going to be followed in Ladakh over rented bikes starting this year. This Main Post will be having the latest update about the rules and process based on the replies/updates in the subsequent posts/updates below.

For references of reliable bike rent shops in Leh and rates of bike rent in Leh, you can refer the thread: Leh - Ladakh Bike Rental Rates 2014 - 15 & Reliable Shops

Yes, you can rent bikes in Leh and Fort Road in Leh is full of such shops that rent bikes. Depending upon the condition, model, make and tourist rush you can get bikes starting from Rs 800 to Rs 1500.

Bike Rental Rules in Ladakh for Outside Rented Bikes
  1. Manali or Delhi or bikes rented outside Leh are not allowed in Ladakh for sightseeing purposes except in Tso Moriri and Tso Kar Lakes which can be done while plying on Leh - Manali route.
  2. Only bikes owned by you or your father will be allowed for sightseeing in Ladakh.
  3. If you rent bikes from Manali and go to Leh and hire Ladakh bikes from there, you will have to pay half rent on the Manali bikes that are parked in Leh while you're using Ladakh bikes. However, you need to check this with the bike rental shop in Manali from where you are going to hire the bike.

As per Updates on 04-06-2014 from locals in Leh
  4. The rule is still active though many sites and bike rentals are claiming it has been ruled out or discarded.
  5. The outside rented bikes are banned in Ladakh for sightseeing in Nubra Valley, Pangong Tso and Zanskar Valley. Rest anywhere in Ladakh you can take the outside rented bike including Tso Moriri, local sightseeing and monasteries.
  6. A foreigner group was caught by local union of bikes in Leh, their bikes were taken into custody by them. However, as a warning they were given Leh based bikes for free as they were the first group. Bikes were returned once they came back from Nubra and Pangong Tso.
  7. Then another group was caught and their bikes were also taken into custody, verified for papers. Those who had papers on their own name or father's name were exempted and their bike were returned. However, those who had rented bikes, they were not given the bikes and they had to hire taxis to sightseeing on their own cost. Their bikes were not seized as a warning again though this time people had to spend extra money.
  8. More severe action can be taken in future for coming groups if this continues as per the locals in Leh.

Thanks Dheeraj for the news.

Can you explain the last point

If you rent bikes from Manali and go to Leh and hire Ladakh bikes from there, you will have to pay half rent on the Manali bikes that are parked in Leh while you're using Ladakh bikes. However, you need to check this with the bike rental shop in Manali from where you are going to hire the bike.

We are hiring bikes from Manali on June 12.

So doest it means that in Manali we do the full payment..and in Ladakh again we pay more for parking the bikes there??

@kapoorvivek4u, yes, your understanding is correct. For example, if you are playing Rs. 700 a day in Manali, you will have to pay Rs. 350 a day for the number of days that the bike remains parked in Leh. You can settle this once you're back to Manali and produce the Leh bike rental slip to calculate the amount.

In Leh, you have to pay full rent for the bikes for the number of days you hire them, most likely to visit Nubra valley and Pangong Lake.

So you mean to say.. That once we are back in manali.. We can produce the slip in manali.. And they will charge half amount only?

Or does it simply means that from now onwards bikes would be 150% times expensive.

I.e 1500 rupees we pay at manali
And 750 rupees in leh???

That means 2250 for one day????

Vivek, lets say you hire a bike from Manali for 10 days and from Leh for 5 days.

Manali: (700 * 10) - (350*5) = 5250 rs.
Leh: 700 *5 = 3500rs.

Yes, sadly, from now on you will have to pay 150%.

kapoorvivek4u, actually Manali guys are giving you a 50% discount because in the days in Ladakh, you will be using Ladakh bikes. Since you are not using Manali bikes, they say just pay us half, that's enough. Instead of spending double during that period of Leh sightseeing [fee for Ladakh bike + fee for Manali bike], you end up spending just 1 1/2 times !!

Thanks Dheeraj for the update... I have discussed this with the rental company and below is their reply..

"Please send us the government/legal source for this rumor. We will provide you all the documents in original along with an Sale deed which makes you the temporary owner of the bike and that cannot be challenged or rejected by any of the official or government body! "
