Srinagar Leh Highway Status 2013

It is almost last week of March 2013 and snow clearance operation over 434 KM long Srinagar Leh Highway are in full swing for the season 2013 – 14. This time snow stock is huge due to abundant snowfall as compared to last year and BRO has deployed highly sophisticated machinery over the highway to complete this snow clearance operation as soon as possible and resume road connectivity to Leh – Ladakh. Good news is that, first reports have come in from BRO and the claims by BRO to open Srinagar Leh Highway by last day of March 2013 i.e. 31st March, 2013 seems a bit optimistic and alot will depend upon weather in coming weeks. But, who knows we are in for a surprise this year :)

As per the earlier years, I will be starting this sticky post for status of the 434 KM long Srinagar Leh Highway which so many adventure lovers await every year. The opening of the Zojila Pass and in turn Srinagar – Leh Highway depends upon the snowfall in the coming weeks and the amount of accumulated snow. But, keeping fingers crossed let’s hope that we get to connect Leh – Ladakh as soon as possible or as the BRO claims by 31st March 2013. I will keep on updating the below article with updates and news on snow clearance of Srinagar Leh Highway in the coming months. Once the Srinagar Leh road opens, I may not be that active in frequently updating the status because these roads close and open on frequent basis. It is barely impossible for a single tiny soul like me to update this information on daily basis once the road gets open(as 1 or 2 readers complained last year), so please request you to excuse me on that front and accept my apologies :)… However, if there is some major blockade of 3 – 4 days, I will try to surely update such information about Srinagar Leh road status.

For your convenience, latest updates on Srinagar Leh Highway will remain at the top followed by older updates. I hope as per the last year, this year as well this article thread will be useful in planning your journey on Srinagar Leh Highway and further to Leh – Ladakh.

Srinagar – Leh Highway has been opened after its temporarily closure last day due to snowfall at Zojila Pass.

Srinagar Leh Highway Status = CLOSED | Update Date: 16th April, 2013

Srinagar – Leh Highway Closed due to snowfall at Zojila Pass. Read more below:

Srinagar, April 17 2013: – Snowfall in the high altitude areas and heavy rains in plains today brought down the mercury across the Kashmir Valley, forcing the denizens to look for woolens once again for warmth.

The snowfall and the rains also prompted the authorities to suspend vehicular traffic on 434-km Srinagar-Leh national highway – the only road linking frontier region of Ladakh with the state, while the traffic on arterial Srinagar-Jammu road remained unaffected, officials said.

It started snowing in the higher reaches of the Valley, including the 11,578 ft high Zojila pass along the strategic Srinagar-Leh highway late last night followed by heavy rains across Kashmir including summer capital Srinagar in the wee hours, they said.

The highway was thrown open for light vehicles earlier this month after remaining closed for winter months due to heavy snowfall.

Reports of snowfall was also received from peripheral areas of the famous ski resort of Gulmarg, Razdan pass, Z-Gali and Sadna top in north and Amarnath cave shrine and adjoining areas in the periphery of famous hill resort of Pahalgam in south Kashmir, the officials said.

Rains and snow also lashed Pahalgam and Gulmarg. While Pahalgam recorded 44.8 mm rain and snow during the last 24 hours till 2.30 pm, Gulmarg recorded 28.0 mm of rains and snow by 8.30 am today, a spokesman of the MET office said.

He said Srinagar recorded 38.4 mm rains during the last 24 hours till 2.30 PM today, while Qazigund on Srinagar-Jammu national highway recorded 30.2 mm rains and Kupwara 30.5 mm.

The snowfall in the upper reaches and heavy rains in the plains led the mercury to drop across the Valley, prompting the residents to wear woolens which they have discorded earlier this month owing improvement in the temperatures.

The heavy rains led to increase in the water level of rivers, lakes, ponds and streams but there was no threat of immediate floods in the Valley, the officials said.

However, the drop in the temperatures caused concern among the farming community, especially orchardists, who fear the change in the weather might affect their crops particularly almond and cherry which are in full bloom.

The rains have also resulted in water-logging in many parts of the city, especially in the commercial hub of Lal Chowk and surrounding areas.

Srinagar Leh Highway Status = CLOSED | Update Date: 31st March, 2013

Vegetables arrived in Leh over Zoji-La from Kashmir a couple of days ago! It’s only ponies so far, of course, but that usually means the vehicles will come through in a week or two.

But then today the sky was dark all day, and there was actually loud thunder in the afternoon, which I haven’t heard since the floods of 2010… So there may have been snow on the passes…

Srinagar Leh Highway Status = CLOSED | Update Date: 20th March, 2013

Am just back from my minor ‘recce’ of Sonamarg this noon… yes there are heaps of snow everywhere in Sonamarg which is just 22kms from the dreaded ZojiLa Pass, average snow lying around now at Sonamarg is 6feet to 20feet & the good sign is that it is showing signs of melting… it is a bright sunny day today with clear blue sky and noon temperature was a comfortable 12’C at Sonamarg. Dal Lake is now 14’C as per my Coghlan outdoor thermometer.
I had a few words with BEACON officials at Sonamarg, who are doing the ground-job of clearing the road of snow at ZojiLa… as per BEACON’s weather forecast, the coming week is going to be a smooth affair with no snowfall and the Beacon & BRO are sure to open ZojiLa by 1st April if not 31stMarch. I saw Beacon using dumpers to dump out snow from the roads into the Sindh River.
At the first sight of my Enfield the J&K police at Sonamarg thought I wanted to ride towards Leh and they stopped me to convey the regret… I have found the J&K police helpful and assisting in my weeklong stay till date :)

Srinagar Leh Highway Status = CLOSED | Update Date: 12th March, 2013

SRINAGAR, 20th March 2013: The Srinagar-Leh National Highway will be re-opened for vehicular traffic by the end of this month, almost a month ahead of schedule, officials said today.

“The Srinagar – Leh National Highway is being opened to vehicular traffic by March 31 — much earlier as compared to previous years,” said a spokesman of Border Roads Organisation which manages the highway.

“Sophisticated machines have been deployed for clearing snow along with experienced engineers and skilled operators and labourers to make the highway suitable for vehicular traffic by the end of this month,” he said.

The 434-km highway, the only road linking the frontier region of Ladakh with the rest of the state, remains closed during winter months due to snowfall and snow avalanche in the Zojila area.

Last year, the arterial road was opened on April 26.

    Hello Dheeraj,

We are planning to travel on srinagar – leh high way on 04-May-2014 , but our concern is will the roads be open.

    • Sathay, please stay tuned on the blog or DoW community Forums, you will be able to get the latest updates of road openings for sure. However, so early in the season the chances of opening up of highway are less and even if it gets open like last year, it will eventually stabilize by mid of May types only.

    hi,,,
    i am erby from Indonesia..
and i want to visit ladakh in mid april 2014,i hope the road will open at that time so i could take the govt bus from srinagar to leh.
does anyone know the optional choices to reach leh from srinagar if the govt bus not available at that time??
and i avoid flight to leh cause i am so worried about the AMS.
    Thx

    regard
    erby

    • Hello Bly,

It will be very dicey situation by Mid April. This year road got opened in April first week nd then got closed for a week or so to finally open up in third week of april. Initially the roads are not that stable and are always opened for light vehicles only and then for public transport of Buses.

It will be better to take direct flight to Leh and move down may be to Alchi and rest there for couple of days. Then you can come back to Leh and rest for a day and you shall do fine with acclimatization in that case. If you are short on time you can dedicate the first two days in Leh for acclimatization as:

Day 1 | Delhi – Leh (By Flight)
      — Checkin at Hotel. Many hotels provide free pick and drop from Airport. Ask while you book them.
      — Take ample of rest as well as water or anything that keep your body hydrated enough. DO NOT OVER HYDRATE. Take ORS Soluted water or ORS – L tetra packs from home.
      — Do not over exert your body at any cost. Avoid too much up-down on stairs or avoid it in entirety, if possible.
      — After 5-6 Hrs of rest you can visit Leh Palace, Local Leh market, Shankar Gompa .
      — If you feel exerted go back to Hotel, have dinner at Hotel and take rest. Avoid any exertion. Else continue and,
      — Follow the sunset by stroll at Changspa road and have a nice dinner on varied cuisines offered in-around Changspa road.
      — Go back to hotel for overnight stay at Leh.

Day 2 | Leh Local Sighseeing + Inner Line Permits
      — For more details on inner line permits process and to download application form read the link here
      — Hire a taxi from Leh taxi stand or Hotel whichever suits you.
      — Bargain hard with taxi driver. Book that single taxi for entire trip after explaining the complete plan.
      — Take his inputs if you feel reasonable and if required modify the plan accordingly but should suits you best.
      — Ask him to be with you guys starting first day itself, if required and charged reasonable else do it at your own.
      — Again DO NOT over exert and take little steps and slow walks only.
      — If feeling OK then do Local sightseeing. To know the about the places to visit check the link: Travel Guide for Local Sightseeing of Leh Town in Ladakh
      — Do not use stairs at any of these places just to see them as it will exert your body much more.
      — Overnight at Leh

I hope this helps. Please let me know in case you have any queries or doubts.

      Regards
      Dheeraj Sharma

    Hi Dheeraj,
what is the current status of Srinagar – Leh highway ? Heard like curfew is announced for one month. We are planning to go by sept 1st. So should we change the plan?

    • All I know, as stated above “Adarsh, there were intermittent blockages at Zojila Pass due to few landslides as per last day status and traffic is being regulated there in the batches from Sonamarg I guess. However, the road is open and through but condition is a bit bad around Zojila Pass.” This was as per yesterday. Curfew was even relaxed yesterday.

    • Adarsh, this is the fresh updated from HVK forum member: “There is a fresh land slide at Zoji la immediately after Baltal & both the higher & lower roads are closed since last 3 hours or so. All traffic is stopped, expecting reopening today evening. Heavy rain continue in Sonamarg region”

      • Zojila Pass was closed yesterday evening due to landslides and could not be opened. Now, it is expected to be opened today but currently no news of its opening.

      • Adarsh says:

Thanks Dheeraj for the updates. We are planning to start from Delhi on 30th Aug,Friday. So expecting the travel from Srinagar to Leh on monday. I Know we cant predict the situation now. Apart from the landslides is there any restriction on the highway due to the intermittent firing or due to rain?. Also would like to know if we are planning Delhi-Manali-Leh route.

        • Adarsh, last day Srinagar – Kargil was opened after clearing the landslide, but the situations is bad with many water crossings around ascend towards Zojila Pass. Apart from that not much of issues.

  4. Srinagar – Leh highway is closed near Sonamarg and is not expected to open today at least. The landslide can be cross over by foot and if one can get a chance to get any other taxi on other side they can reach the other end

    • Srinagar – Leh Highway has been reopened of the landslide near Sonamarg and last day one of the readers has made it to Kargil… However, Jammu – Srinagar road is still affected for traffic movement due to bandhs

    hi dheeraj

we are planning a trip to delhi-Srinagar- leh – manali- delhi by swift (diesel)on 15th of may & onwards so pls confirm us wther its a good time to travel in mid may & maruti swift is ok for trip or we have to take some SUV. Also give me some suggestions for leh trip

    • Sam, it is unlikely that Manali – Leh highway will be open by mid of May. For hatchback/sedan taking on Manali – Leh Highway and Ladakh, I will say:

You will indeed face few tough challenges on the route. The hatchback/sedan will increase the level of every challenge even further, sedan is the worst candidate. My suggestion will be to go via Srinagar route as it will help you feel comfortable with the driving, provide more acclimatization and then once you have done the local Leh-Ladakh, then come back via Manali side. Secondly, since you are in hatch/sedan, then you need to drive with extra care as well. There will be some sections on the Manali – Leh highway in which you might need to sacrifice some scratches on the underbelly. Just make sure you do not bump the engine sump (know it before where it is placed in your car). You need to protect it all around the trip. Thirdly, whenever in doubt do not rush into the section rather park aside and feel the section with your foot, see how other vehicles are crossing it and make a planned route in your mind to cross that section. At the very least do carry Mseal, quick fix, funnel, jerry cans and towing rope with you all the time.

Also, I will strongly suggest that you go through and read my series on Ladakh Self Drive tips at the links below:

    • Yes, it is possible to drive an alto to Khardung La and Pangong Tso lake and I have seen people who have done that. Point is about skills and a bit of courage and of course sometimes sacrifices of some scratched under the body of the car too.
