Snowfall expected in coming days around Manali

There might be a good news for all the people planning to go to Manali and around to celebrate Christmas, that a western disturbance is predicted to hit the Northern India post 19th December 2011. This means people can expect snowfall around Manali or at the snow points of Marhi and Gulaba. Meanwhile, BRO has finally decided to close the operations of snow clearance for the winter season 2011-12 and means now the roads to Lahaul Valley will be blocked for next 5-6 months or snow.

MANALI, December 2011: The cold weather condition in Himachal Pradesh hampered the day to day activities in the state as and sky remained overcast on Saturday. Officials of the meteorological department said another spell of snowfall is expected on the higher reaches on December 19.

The residents of Lahaul-Spiti, Kinnaur and Kullu-Manali woke up to a frosty Saturday morning, and tap water reached its freezing point. Keylong was the coldest -5.9 degrees celsius followed by Kalpa and Manali at -2.6 and -1.2 degrees celsius respectively. Temperature in the areas located at 14,000ft is somewhere below -15 degrees celsius. Chandertal lake in Spiti and Surajtal lake at Sarchu are blocks of ice. The director of meteorological department Shimla, Manmohan Singh, said things would be better in the coming days. “Western disturbances originating from the Caspian sea would be active after December 19, which could lead to snowfall on the higher altitudes, but the dry weather would persist in the lower hills.” Meanwhile, the Border Roads Organization has decided not to clear the snow off Rohtang Pass which is located at a height of 13,050 feet.

Nights at Solan and Sundernagar in Mandi are extremely cold and foggy with minimum temperatures at -0.4 degrees celsius. However, temperature hovered around 23.4 degrees celsius in Una.

    hey dheeraj
we 4 frnds are deciding to come manali/shimla just to celebrate new year from kurukshetra.we decided to be there on 31 and 1.as we are collg studnts, our budget is less.we are not having car with us and our budget is around 3000 max for each individual.should we come or cancel our trip..?? guide me rightly and immediately because its already 28.

    • Hi Tarun,

Buddy well you can go to Manali and have fun in loads of snow present there but perhaps this is the costliest week of the year and finding accommodation may also be a challenge. You can surely go there and search for economic and cheap but decent hotels around old Manali, Manali – Naggar road or vashisht hot water springs. I am sorry I do not have much contacts of such hotels apart from The River View where you can try your luck if the budget suits you (09418428957 (Mr. Kamlesh Thakur), 09418072595, 01902251047). Also, I feel 3000 is a bit low for this time of the year. But, yes of course three days past new year the prices will be earthed.

I hope this helps. Please let me know incase you have more doubts or queries.

im planning a trip to manali-kufri on 24 dec , will i get snow in either places ?

    • Hello Dr. Amjad,

First and foremost, please keep in mind that first you will be traveling in the costliest week of the year, second there will be hefty tourist rush around both Shimla and Manali and third that you will need pre-booking at either of the places to avoid sleeping in taxi/bus itself (I am not joking but around X-mas and new year, have known people who slept in car :) )

Well, yes at that time you will be able to see ample of snow stock around the snow points of Gulaba or Solang Valley. So, if snow is the priority then there are no issues. Also, I hope you have more than 6 days to cover both Shimla and Manali circuit with ease. otherwise I will suggest that you head towards Manali to make it easy.

Manali Local sightseeing which includes Hadimba Temple, Manu Temple, Mall Road, Local Monastery, Vashisth Hot Water Springs (never found it interesting) etc, Snow Points are at either at Solang Valley or Marhi/Gulaba on the way to Rohtang Pass and do check out Naggar Castle (stay at Naggar and enjoy the place if possible).

I hope that helps. Please let me know incase you need more details or have some queries or doubts.
