Snowfall at Manali, Rohtang, Kashmir, Shimla on New Year 2011

There has been good news for the tourists as well as Hotel and Tourism industry in the adjoining areas of the Hills that IMD or weather department in India has predicted heavy snowfall on the coming days of new year including the new year eve. A western disturbance is likely to hit the Himalayas and result in snowfall in the higher reaches of Himalayas including Manali, Rohtang Pass, Kashmir, Shimla, Kufri, Narkanda etc and rainfall in the lower part of the hills. Hence, all you guys waiting for snowfall can get ready to setup for a snow white new year around the hilly regions adjoining Manali, Rohtang Pass, Kashmir, Shimla, Kufri, Narkanda etc
It’s almost the end of year 2010 and it has been snow all over the world this winters. However, the mighty Himalayas in India still awaits for the snow gods to praise them this year and bring snowfall to the Himalayan hills. Although the temperatures are well below freezing point throughout the hills but there is no respite in terms of dry freezing weather as snow still eludes the region. It seems (at least to me) that for the first time it has happened that there was no white Christmas any where in India including parts of Kashmir, Rohtang Pass, Manali, Shimla, Kufri, Narkanda etc. But, as the weather department predicts the wait is all set to vanish and snowfall may bring cheers / smiles to tourists, hoteliers, apple growers, locals of the hilly regions who are suffering from dry chilling weather up there.

There is a good news for the tourism industry. The weather god may oblige the “Queen of Hills” and other tourist destinations in the state with snow on the eve of New Year, if the forecast of the Meteorological Department comes true.
In charge of the local met office said a western disturbance was approaching the state due to which light to moderate rain and snow would occur at many places on December 30 and 31. The impact of the disturbance would be felt from December 29 itself when a few places were likely to experience light to moderate rain and snow.
Places most likely to experience snow include the tourist destinations of Narkanda, Manali, Rohtang Pass, Kufri, Shimla and the higher reaches of the state. He said heavy rain and snow was likely to occur at isolated places from the midnight of December 29 till December 30.
The forecast has brought cheer to the hotel industry and others connected with tourist trade as snowfall brings more visitors and the otherwise short tourist season is also extended.
A good snowfall will also improve the prospects of the apple crop as it is considered as “white manure” for the orchards.
In another similar story about Kashmir, there is forecast for Snowfall as well within next few days.

As the Kashmir valley continues to reel under intense dry and cold conditions for the past several weeks, the weathermen have indicated that a mild to widespread snowfall may occur at different places during the next three days.
“A western disturbance is approaching the state due to which light to moderate snowfall may occur over the hills at isolated places from Tuesday evening, and fairly widespread snowfall at many places till Friday,” Aamir Ali, coordinator of the Disaster Management and OSD of the Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, said here this evening.
“There has not been much change in minimum temperatures witnessed in the Valley over the past many days. All deputy commissioners have been advised to activate snow control rooms from today, and the field staff have been kept in a state of readiness,” an official spokesman said.
He added that the Kashmir valley had been divided into three zones and 74 snow clearance machines had been kept in a state of preparedness. These include 27 for Srinagar, Budgam, Ganderbal; 21 for Shopian, Pulwama, Kulgam, Anantnag; and 26 for Baramulla, Kupwara, Gulmarg, Bandipore and Gurez.

we have booked our tickets for manali for the third week of dec(20-23). can we expect some snow atleast in solang valley?
Hi Ranjeetha,
Yes you will be able to see and play in plenty of snow at snow points of Gulaba or Marhi or Solang Valley (all not very far from Manali). If your luck favors and weather gods permit then who knows, you might see the snowfall itself. There is plenty of snow stock present up there, so enjoy the trip
I hope this helps. Please let me know incase you have more doubts or queries.
If interested in more details on Manali including sightseeing places, accommodation options, food joints, etc you can go through the Manali travel guide available at the link here.

Thank you Dheeraj for the reply. Can we do skiing?.
Dear Dheeraj
Thank you for the prompt reply. Would like to ask you few doubts about the weather and road conditions. Some weather sites say the temperature is around 10 degree Celsius now, in contrast some other sites say its between 23 and 28 degree Celsius. I am thoroughly confused. And is there any chance that we will be held back in Manali due to extreme climatic conditions/ road block cos of snow etc..?would love to know about the possibility of skiing also . learned from the sites that the Rohtang Valley is already closed.
Hi Ranjeetha,
The links here: Rohtang Pass, Kothi and Manali regions respectively can be helpful for you in tracking the weather updates of Manali and around. If it says raining in Manali, or rains/snow at Kothi or snows at Rohtang Pass then expect snowfall at nearby snow points of Solang and Marhi/Gulaba etc.
Generally, if at all heavy snowfall happens in around Manali then I guess at max it will take a day to clear the snow upto Manali on the main highway. So, nothing much to worry about for getting stuck, if at all (in rarest scenario which can happen anywhere in hills) then it will be like for a day or two at max.
Yes, Rohtang Pass is closed for tourist since November and yes you can enjoy skiing at Solang Valley.
I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any queries or doubts.

planning to go to shimla on dec.12th will there be snow fall at that time?
Prasanna, I guess there will not be any snowfall by that time going by the predictions linked here and here. It says clear skies and also generally, Shimla tend to get snowfall by end of December or early January.
thanks for your reply then where will be snow fall at that time can you please suggest any place with snow fall
Prasanna, well no one can predict snowfall but if you want snow then there is quite amount of snow present around snow points of Manali viz. Marhi/Gulaba and Solang Valley. So, if you want to enjoy snow then head Manali and if you are lucky then who knows you end up witnessing snowfall up there near snow points.

Hello all, i want to go manali & rohtang for snow fall seeing. so plz advice when should i go there ?
Hello Pawan,
First week of October is not an ideal time to see snow up at Rohtang Pass. The last year snow stock would be available to limited spots and that too dirty enough to avoid it. You may/may not be able to see remains of this year's unseasonal snowfall in August. So, if the idea is to see just snow then try to delay it about a month or two. I hope this helps. Please let me know if you need more details or have any doubts or queries. If interested, for more information on Manali and Rohtang Pass including accommodation options, food joints, must see places etc you can go through the Manali travel guide available at the link here

Hello Ganesh,
Its monsoon time and Beas is also in spate now a days. In addition to that there are long frequent jams on Manali – Rohtang Pass road. Extremely pathetic road conditions also adds more to the nightmare. Rohtang Pass will be open but again roads are too bad
… IMHO I feel you should postpone it by a month or two. If you plan to go then you may enjoy the Manali town and lovely weather but again heavy rains are something which we should avoid in hills, at least this is my personal views.
I hope this helps. Please let me know in case you have queries.
