  1. Nice to know that you are traveling and hpe enjoying it too :)

Well, yes ofcourse you can do so i.e. first travel to Manali, get the bikes rented and come back via Jaloi Pass to enter Kinnaur and further towards Spiti. The only glitch I see is that you need to travel to Manali without bike may be via Volvo in that case. But, if you plan to visit Shimla as well then there will be some more back tracking once you reach Narkanda via Jalori Pass. Hence, I though it will be better to have bikes rented from Delhi, so that you can skip Manali and be on course to Spiti. But, if you plan to visit Shimla just for the permits then in that case you can skip it and move to peo via Jalori Pass and Narkanda (if bike rented from Manali) where you will be able to get the required permits.

Kunzam la is still closed, so you cannot do Manali – Kaza via Rohtang Pass and Kunzam Pass. Also, many people prefer bikes rented from Delhi because they are a bit in better shape than Manali bikes.

    Hi Dheeraj,

Sorry for answering so late, I have been traveling a bit.
Why could I not rent the bike from Manali, and then go back south to fetch permits and enter from Kinnaur ?

  3. @Alexandre, Great to know that, mate. All the very best for the trip… mine is still all sought of doubts :( ….

Well, you can get the permits from Reckong Peo as well as Shimla. But, I guess you need to be in a group of 4 to get it directly otherwise you need to get it from some travel agent in Shimla or Peo. These permits are required ahead of Peo towards upper Kinnaur with first checkpost being at Sumodo. Well, I guess you cannot do it from Manali via Rohtang Pass, so either you will travel via Jalori Pass or you need to follow the Shimla route. In that latter case, you will need to get the bike rented from Delhi only.

Ah ah thank you very much for this update.
It is a shame you could not complete the trip. I will check all the tips you gave me and try as many as I can, if I am able to proceed of course…

I am planning to start it on the 23rd of May, so we may go at the same time.
I wanted to start by the Rohtang Pass though to avoid having to fetch a permit. Could you tell me if it is in Shimla or in Reckong Péo that we can have the permit to enter by Kinnaur ? Because I have read both on forums.

Also, would you recommend me to rent my bike from Manali or from Delhi itself ?

Thank you once again for your answers.
    Regards !

    Alexandre

  5. Hello Alexandre,

Unfortunately, we couldn’t complete the trip due to a massive Landslide at Puh ahead of Kalpa, Kinnaur Valley. We had to return from there itself. I am planning it again next week although not finalized but fingers crossed. Then, probably I will be able to share my detailed feedback.

Once you reach Spiti Valley there are ample of treks around Kaza which you can enjoy. Just ahead of Tabo, Dhankar Lake can also be visited. The Mane village and hikes in Pin Valley are also worth going. Then, on the way there is Kalpa and Sangla + Chitkul, both in Kinnaur Valley, which can also be covered. You can also go ahead from Kalpa towards Roghi Village to explore a bit more.

Top of the trip, if you plan the trip in July – September window, then a trek to Chandratal is a must and if you are one of those many day trekkers type, Chandratal to Baralacha La would revive everything you need from nature.

I hope it was useful for you, may be after two weeks if I happen to visit the place, I may answer alot of your queries too :)

    Regards,

    Dheeraj

Thank you very much for this post.
I would like to do exactly the same trip.

Could you give any feedback on how it went ?
Also, are you aware of any place to visit on the way ? Any small trekk or sites accessible ?

    Thanks once again !

  7. [...] We saw snow and we saw sun; we saw rain and we saw river; we saw slush and we saw gravel; we saw hell and we saw heaven. Well it was so much awaited and for almost an year that I have been struggling to find time for the trip to Spiti Valley. Then, finally after coming back from Goa (Delhi to Goa | Valentines Trip), I immediately decided that this time in April as the snow gets clear from the 350-km Hindustan-Tibet road, I would certainly hit it with my wheels. After rigorous planning, heavy travelogues reading and framing minutest details of My Spiti Itinerary. [...]

  8. Well i just felt like dropping a comment here because it really deserve a thanks from myself. Really very good post. And yeah its better than the ones that i have visited so far regarding this niche. I expect more such threads mainly on ladakh trekking .
