Manali – Leh Highway Opens via Alternate Route
Manali – Leh road was opened by Border Roads Organization (BRO) though via an alternate route after almost 6 weeks since the heaven on earth, Ladakh, was hit by raw nature’s wrath causing flash floods and mud slides, tearing the roads, villages and life apart into pieces. The alternate route will increase the length of Manali – Leh road journey from 479 km to 584 km.
People of Ladakh are not yet out of the havoc caused by the disaster. Winters are beginning to set in as the morning and night temperatures are falling day by day. People who survived the disaster but had their homes washed away are still looking forward for the promise made by our political leader to give them as many as 1200 houses by October end. As common wealth games it seems however, unlikely.
. The restoration of Manali – Leh highway may provide a little help for the Ladakh region as it’s almost the lifeline for supplies and restoration activities being carried out for Leh flash flood victims. Opening of this highway would mean more inflow of supplies can get into Leh and eventually help the stockings for winters.

The maximum damage on this highway was near Upshi, around 50 km away from Leh. A 20-km stretch of the highway between Upshi and Rumtse and another 6-km stretch between the Rumtse and Debring had been washed away. The Tribune team drove on the Upshi-Rumtse stretch and observed that ground clearance was low, causing difficulties to drivers. Seeing the condition of the stretch, the BRO has opened an alternate but longer route — Upshi-Likche-Rani Bagh-Giak-Kiri-Chumathang-Mahe-Sando-Debring.
