First Snowfall at Manali, Rohtang Pass | Winters 2010
Changing weather brings the pleasant news for tourists fond of witnessing snow. Yesterday, upper hills of the Himachal Pradesh region including Manali, Rohtang Pass, Baralacha Pass and Kunzum Pass experienced the first continuous snowfall of the winter season 2010. Rohtang pass recorded more than two feet of snow yesterday, Solang Valley experiencing to third of the feet. Manali was not far behind as it experienced its first snowfall of the season measuring 6 inches. Even the high hills of Dhauladhar ranges overlooking from Kangra Valley wore a white blanket of snow. Now, as the snowfall has been experienced in the valleys of Himachal Pradesh, many tourists will be overwhelmed by the news as seeing snow is what everyone prioritize
. So, rush to book the holidays now…
Although snowfall caused many people to be left stranded in the Kullu – Manali region as villagers from tribal Lahaul Valley were in the Kullu region for ongoing Dusshera festival which was to end today. Rohtang Pass was to be closed on 31st October, 2010 but due to more than two feet of snow it has been closed. Officials may open the road for the Lahaul Valley villagers who are left stranded but for sure they won’t carry out any road clearing operations after 31st October, 2010.
Read more here:
A number of tourists were stranded between Rohtang Pass and Manali as slippery conditions created by snow disrupted the movement of vehicles. The key tourist resort of Manali had the first snowfall of the season, receiving 6 cm snowfall while the Solang Nullah had 20 cm. The Rohtang Pass (13,050 ft), gateway to tribal Lahaul Valley, received 65-cm snowfall. The Rohtang Pass that was to be closed from October 31 had been closed today

hey dheeraj also suggest me the best route we can take from chandigarh via rohtang pass as well as the places in kullu manali as far as snow and sight seeing is concerned
Hi Anisha,
In second week of October, it is unlikely that you will find snow at Rohtang Pass unless there is any fresh spell of snowfall in nearby days of your travel dates. Manali Local sightseeing which includes Hadimba Temple, Manu Temple, Mall Road, Local Monastery, Vashisth Hot Water Springs (never found it interesting) etc, Snow Points are at either at Solang Valley or Marhi/Gulaba on the way to Rohtang Pass and do check out Naggar Castle (stay at Naggar and enjoy the place if possible).
If interested in more details on Manali and Rohtang Pass including route details, sightseeing places, accommodation options, food joints, etc you can go through the Manali travel guide available at the link here.
I hope this helps. Let me know incase you need more info. or have any queries or doubts.

…
hey thax Dheeraj for your help ! anyways how was your trip?
Hi Anisha,
Thanks alot. The trip was JUST AWESOME …. had some most amazing fun of my life. The trip had everything I could imagine even after traveling so much … The snow run to Khardung La and getting stuck every odd few KMs at 18K was some serious fun…. Tangste to Nubra via Shyok isolated route was major highlight…. At couple of places we had almost cross a part of river, crossing landslides on that route was super adventure, even army men were shocked to see us on the other side. The route was really beautiful. Photography wise it was disappointing due to overcast days and dark clouds. also, ride a Bullet Classic for the first time upto Chilling and Basgo, it was fun in itself too.
Overall, fantastic trip with not so good pics … I will try to post them asap but after spending so many days alone, my family would kill me if I go anywhere near the camera…

Thank u
Hi Lavanya,
It is always hard to predict snowfall as it depends on the luck and the weather on the day you plan to visit
… For snowfall best bet is that, you keep the plan flexible and keep a check on weather updates on the day you plan to visit.
But, yes of course there will be plenty of snow stock around Manali. So, if snow is the priority then there are no issues but for snowfall best bet is that, you keep the plan flexible and keep a check on weather updates on the day you plan to visit. The links here: Rohtang Pass, Kothi and Manali regions respectively can be helpful for you in tracking the weather updates of Manali and around. If it says raining in Manali, or rains/snow at Kothi or snows at Rohtang Pass then expect snowfall at nearby snow points of Solang and Marhi/Gulaba etc. As far as snow is concerned, you will find plenty of snow out there.
Depending upon the time in hand, around Shimla, you can check Jakhoo Temple, State Museum, Mall Road, Ridge, Lakkar Bazaar, Kufri, Chail, Narkanda, Hatu Peak. You can go via Shimla side and come back via Chail side just to experience a different scenery
As per itinerary, you can follow something like -
Day 1 | Reach Shimla from Chandigarh. Check-in and rest at hotel. In the second half explore local Shimla including Shimla Ridge, Mall Road, Lakkar Bazaar, Back to Hotel By Evening.
Day 2 | Around Shimla, a relaxing day. Jakhoo Temple, State Museum, Mall Road, Ridge etc. as you like or may be you can do Shimla – Kufri – Chail – Shimla (Kufri will not be much worth a visit in May) and on return visit Jakhoo temple.
Day 3 | Shimla – Narkanda – Jalori Pass – Shoja
- I will suggest that you take Jalori Pass route to Shimla and halt night at Shoja. The drive is extremely adventurous and beautiful + too scenic as compared to other routes to Manali from Shimla.
Day 4 | Shoja – Kasol – Manikaran – Manali
Day 5 | Manali Local sightseeing which includes Hadimba Temple, Manu Temple, Mall Road, Local Monastery, Vashisth Hot Water Springs (never found it interesting) etc.
Day 6 | Manali – Snow Point at Marhi/Gulaba on the way to Rohtang Pass. Enjoy in snow and come back to Manali
Day 7 | Manali – Naggar Castle (stay at Naggar and enjoy the place. Very romantic with great views and food. Visit Roerich Musueum, Art Gallery and do not miss the hike to ancient Krishna Temple at the top)
Day 8 | Naggar Castle – Manali – Chandigarh. Checkout from Naggar Castle by noon. Since, the volvo to Delhi will be around 5.30 PM types, so either you can spend sometime hanging around Naggar only and after lunch leave for Manali or you have the option to come back to Manali and hang around on Mall road and finally take the return bus. Or, you can also co-ordinate with bus HPTDC guys so that the bus pick you from the nearest pickup point for Naggar on the way to Delhi. Naggar Castle guys will arrange the taxi for the drop there.
** if you have time then try, Manali Sanctuary can also be covered as it is just about 2-3 KMs from Manali town and there is trail which starts from Manali Log Huts or Dhungri temple that leads you into the woods.
** If you are short on number of days then make a day trip to Naggar Castle in the day and come back to Manali by after noon to catch the evening Volvo. If you are OK with carrying luggage in the taxi then you can spend the day in Naggar Castle and ask taxi guy to drop you to bus stand near Naggar on Delhi – Manali Highway where HPTDC volvo can pick you (you need to let HPTDC guys know about your pickup in that case).
I hope that helps. Please let me know incase you need more details or have some queries or doubts.

Hi Ashok,
There is plenty of snow stock available as of now and Rohtang Pass has just been opened which have loads of snow to play around even in last week of May.

I have a plan to visit Manali at the end of January 2013(25h-31st). Specially I am crazy to visit rohtang pass and surroundings. So, please give me some detailed information about the possibilities of my visit to each and every place and please provide me the information about the weather on that time. Apart from that, I want to know the approximate low cost budget to make my trip to manali.
Hi,
My daughter is 9 yrs old she like to visit Shimla,Kullu and Manali. She want to play in snow.Rohtang pass especially. When is it advisable to go after May.Is september a good time.
Hello Priya,
If you want to play in snow then head to Rohtang Pass in June (mid-June types). Keep in mind, that in June Manali and around is flooded with tourist rush. You will not find any snow around Shimla even after March, so forget about May. The only place to find snow easily in June is Rohtang Pass.

I am planning to go to shimla,Kullu and manali only in the month of september 2012. Will we be able to enjoy the Rohtang pass as my daughter want to play snow .If september is not good how about august last week?
Hello Nirmalya,
Sorry for the delayed reply. Well, in January Rohtang Pass will be closed owing to heavy snow presence. You will be allowed to go upto Gulaba only about 20 KMs from Manali.
Rohtang Pass will be closed but there will be huge amount of snow stock for sure.

Hi, would be going on vacation with my husband after ages….so lot of confusion on where we can go for 8-9 days from Kolkata during 03to11March2012. Any suggestions please on which place would be ideal – some off-season place preferably. We were planning Shimla/Kulu/manali/Dalhousie/Dharamshala/Rohtang _would Rohtang be open?). Need guidance. Thanks.
Hello Dipti,
Rohtang Pass will be closed at that time. I would suggest that you leave any one of the circuits out of three (Shimla,Manali,Dharamshala) in such number of days. Choose, Shimla and Manali I will say. Or if you prefer some off-beat location then prefer Shimla + Narkanda + Pabbar Valley (off-beat and very nice). Let me know your choice and I will suggest the plan/itinerary accordingly
I hope that helps. Please let me know incase you need more details or have some queries or doubts.

HI Dheeraj, This thread is really informative and helpful. I am visiting Manali on the first week of March with 5 friends. We have 2 days at manali. Can u suggest me some interesting places(no temples) and adventure sports that can be done in this period?I am a photographer so plz suggest me some good places to shoot pics:)And also i wanted to know how safe isit to drive from manali to chandigarh in the night by car.
Hi Sudeep,
If you have 2 days at Manali then on one of the days you can head to Solang Valley snow point for adventure activities. Ideally it should be the second day and on first day may be you can check out Naggar Castle where at Naggar you check Roerich Musueum, Art Gallery and a hike to Krishna temple. Otherwise, if you like to hike around then there are ample of walks around Manali going into woods to some awesome vantage points. You can check walk towards goshal village which start near Manu temple or otherwise hike towards Lamadugh whose trail starts near Hadimba temple. Ask locals for direction, great views from the top
…
Well, personally, I have done it 2-3 times and generally traffic runs throughout night but it becomes difficult due to heavy truck traffic post Sunder Nagar upto Bilaspur/Swarghat types. If you have experience of driving in hills at night, then only I will suggest you to go for it else avoid it.
I hope this helps. Please let me know incase you have more doubts or queries.

Rohtang Pass will be closed for sure as in March only the snow clearance activity start, so you will be allowed at max upto Marhi (17 KMs before Rohtang Pass) or Gulaba (32 KMs before Rohtang Pass).

HI Deeraj,
I am visitng Manali on Feb 6th,I want to know wat would be the temperature and also i want to know if i can purchase woollen clothes after coming to manali ,is there any places were i can buy those clothes…
Hi Harish,
The weather conditions will be very cold and I will advice you to go there with heavy woolens only. Of course, you can buy woolens once you reach there but on the way as well you will find very cold conditions. Buying from Manali will also be costly affair. So, buy it from your home town itself.
I hope this helps. Please let me know incase you have more doubts or queries.

Hello Satish,
No buddy Rohtang Pass is already closed for about 4-5 months now and you won’t be allowed to go beyond Gulaba I guess in February which is about 32 KMs before Rohtang Pass.

Hi Dheeraj Sharma,we friends(5members) r planning to visit kullu manali(3days)(feb 1st week) ….we r comin frm chennai(Tamil Nadu) .. would you plz schedule our plan frm delhi to kullu manali(i.e . mode of transportation.. hotal..taxi cost nd everything ) …amount shld not exceed rs.4000 each ppl…..total of 5members (rs.20,000)
Hi Satish,
February is off season in Kullu Manali and you will find heavy discounts on both accommodation as well as transport. But, from Delhi to Manali for a return trip you need to spend about Rs 2100-2400 for a HPTDC Volvo or HRTC Volvo bus unless you are ready to travel by non-deluxe HRTC buses that run between Delhi and Manali. So, within remaining Rs 1600, if you plan to choose accommodation at either Manali-Naggar road or vashisht you might be able to do it in your budget. Check the hotels there once you reach and bargain hard being off-season. As per the plan yo can do like -
Day 1 – Reach Manali and take rest for first half of the day. Local sightseeing which includes Hadimba Temple, Manu Temple, Mall Road, Local Monastery, Vashisth Hot Water Springs (never found it interesting) etc.
Day 2 | Manali – Snow Point at Marhi/Gulaba on the way to Rohtang Pass. Enjoy in snow and come back to Manali
Day 3 | Manali Local again and in the evening take the overnight volvo back to Delhi
I hope this helps. Please let me know incase you have more doubts or queries.

Hi Sachin,
April will be good time to see snow stock all around Manali. By May, generally the tourist rush start to increase and snow points get dirtier and dirtier… So, if you can head there in Spring season that is April. As I write this, Manali is being greeted with a very heavy snowfall

Hi Dheeraj,
As I will be in manali in next 3 days so how is the climate there? presently snow will be there or not? please reply.
Hi Sunny,
You will find plenty of snow up there at Manali snow points and it was raining today there which means snowing up near Manali for sure or who knows even in Manali itself. In any case, you will find plenty of snow. Have fun and a great trip. Go with heavy woolens as it is indeed very cold and chilly there.

hi Deeraj..finally what i notice on your web that you are a awesome guy with perfect knowledge of most of the things. i am been in manali once now i am planning to go for my honeymoon.
my projected date will be 22nd of feb. can you please do me big favour, please tell me which route i should go from Delhi and what will be the adventurous place near to manali. i really do not care about how cold it will be as i am been in -22 degree in snowy mountain in Australia for 2 week for exploring minerals
Thanks for help
Hi Jitendra,
Thanks a lot buddy for such warm words of appreciation and yups congratulations for your Marriage too. Since, you will be traveling in February to Manali there will be plenty of snow up there. I suggest you book some hotel in Solang Valley near Manali where you will find snow all around your hotel and is pretty much away from town’s hustle bustle too. At Solang Valley you will be able to do all adventure sports ranging from Paragliding to Skiing. Also, it will be off-season and you will get good discounts too for these adventure activities as well as hotels. Do not book any honeymoon package unless there is significant discount which generally isn’t there.
In the end, I will suggest that you spend about 2-3 days at Tirthan Valley and 3-4 days at Manali, depending upon the time you have in hand.
I hope this helps. Let me know incase you have further doubts/queries.
Wishing you and your family a very very Happy and Prosperous New Year…
Cheers!!

As im going to manali by 6th of jan12 to 10th jan12 so pls suggest me best sight seeing and will kinnaur be the right to go for 2 days from manali?
Hi Sunny,
No it will not be right to go to Kinnaur from Manali for just two days as it will take you two days atleast to reach Kinnaur itself from Manali… Manali Local sightseeing which includes Hadimba Temple, Manu Temple, Mall Road, Local Monastery, Vashisth Hot Water Springs (never found it interesting) etc, Snow Points are at either at Solang Valley or Marhi/Gulaba on the way to Rohtang Pass and do check out Naggar Castle (stay at Naggar and enjoy the place if possible).
I hope that helps. Please let me know incase you need more details or have some queries or doubts.

Hi Naveen,
Weather will be cold with snow in reach (with in few KMs) in January end at Shimla and Manali. I guess if you come with heavy woolens then there should not be much problems with the temperatures.
I hope this helps. Please let me know incase you have more doubts or queries.

I want to know whether snow fall occurs in first week of February every year in Manali?
I am planning to visit Manali in first week of february will it be right season?
Hi Yogesh,
It is always hard to predict snowfall as it depends on the luck and the weather on the day you plan to visit
… Well, yes at that time you will be able to see ample of snow stock around the snow points of Gulaba/Marhi or Solang Valley.
I hope this helps. Please let me know incase you have more doubts or queries.

is there snow fall in shimla now?
I am planning a trip to Manali on 31st Dec2011-03rd January 2012. I have been to Manali in December around 4-5 years and it snowed heavily back but wanted to check if can expect snowfall looking at the current weather conditions. The only reason for this trip is to gift a white snowy birthday for my hubby and it would be worthless without the snow. I have also shortlisted Manali Heights and Snow Valley resorts as oprtions and they have New year packages that look good. I believe I should book at the earliest as its a peak season and so wanted your view regarding the snowfall. Thank you
Hi Shweta,
Seeing the current dry weather conditions yes it is very much possible to witness some snowfall post 15th December and last year as well it was a white new year all over the Manali and Shimla regions. So, it might be possible that this time as well it may happen so. Having said that, It is always hard to predict snowfall as it depends on the luck and the weather on the day you plan to visit
… Well, yes at that time you will be able to see ample of snow stock around the snow points of Gulaba/Marhi or Solang Valley. Thank you Dheeraj for your prompt response. Well, I agree I should wait till mid december and check the weather conditions and plan accordingly. The only catch is the hotel booking- I believe it will be a heavy rush period so best to book in advance. Another quick query- the two hotels that I have found on the website that I liked are “Manali Heights” and “Snow Valley Resort”. Do you think these are good options or you have any other place to suggest .
Once again, thanks a million for all your help.
Cheers,
Shweta
Shweta, I am sorry I do not have much idea about these options. If you ask me then I will suggest that may be you should also check Johnson’s. There are two Johnson’s in Manali one by the name Johnson’s Lodge other I guess Jimmy Johnson’s Hotel and Cafe. Both as adjacent to each other and great options of stay, I must say. One of them also have raison cottages as well which looks decent but I do not have any personal experience with them. We have also stayed at Hotel Picaddily as well but that was in off-season, may be at that time prices will be high. We had decent time there as well.
Yes, hotel bookings will be a major issue at that time window and most of the hotels may be running full. So, you need to plan it a bit early for sure. Again I will say, if luck will be with you guys then I am sure you will see snowfall and in any case there will be plenty of snow for sure up there.
Regards,
Dheeraj
This is excellent.Thank you so much for helping me out here. I went through your blog and I think its excellent. Also , finally thankyou for sharing the links for weather and hotels. Fingers crossed- there will be a snowfall.
Hi Dheeraj,
A quick question- whats the best way to travel to Manali by road. I was thinking of HPTDC Volvo’s. Also is it okay to book these tickets online?
Hi Shweta,
Yes, I guess HPTDC Volvo is a better option of traveling to Manali as far as I know. Yeah, I feel it is perfectly OK to book the tickets online. I am not sure about the seating preference availability while booking online, hence if you put up in Delhi and can manage to visit HPTDC office at Chandralok building then it will be better to book in person and ask the HPTDC guy to give the middle seats. Avoid seats at or after rear wheels of the bus
… Do take a think sheet or blanket if you plan to go by Volvo as it can get chilly.

Hello Radhika,
The roads to Kinnaur remains open all throughout the year. Yes, of course incase of heavy snowfall the road may get closed for a day or two or more but generally, the roads to Kinnaur or infact even Spiti Valley upto Kaza, remains open throughout the year.

hi dheeraj
finally muje ey batao ki jan27-jan 30 ko shimla-manali jana acha hoga ya shimla-kinnaur.muje snowfall aur views dekhni hai
Hi Radhika,
Definitely Kinnaur – Shimla, if you have no issue with some really cold conditions and interested in awesome views and ready for long some long days of travel with just 5 days. It will be hectic in 5 days as compared to Shimla – Manali. Definitely Shimla – Manali, if you want moderate cold conditions and less hectic vacation in 5 days. If I were you, I will settle for Shimla – Manali in 5 days and that too in winters
… If you add couple of more days then I will go with Kinnaur – Shimla.

shimla-kufri-narkanda-hatu peak-kalpa-sangla-kamru fort ke beech mein aur koi pts hai kya on the way matlab like rivers, dams, waterfalls etc….
Hi Radhika,
The Satluj river will accompany you after crossing Narkanda, just before Rampur and will continue to run along upto Kalpa. At Karcham you will find big water reservoir of Karcham dam just on the side of the highway. Hence, there will not any any special points where you need to specifically visit. Just enjoy these locations and the views on the route to each of them.

mein shimla-kinnaur ke liye jan27-jan 30 plan kar rahi hun.
jan 27-shimla-kufri-narkanda and night stay at narkanda
jan28-narkanda-hatu peak-kalpa night stay at kalpa
jan29-kalpa-sangla night stay at sangla aur us din night shimla ke liye return journey karenge.kya ey plan acha hai ya koi changes karni hai isme.aur koi places miss kar chuki hun kya??
Hi Radhika,
Your plan is good but you cannot drive in night in Kinnaur because of ice on roads and it is always not suggested to drive at night in Kinnaur any day of the year. So, with little modifications I will suggest the below plan…
Jan 27 | Shimla – Kurfi – Narkanda
Jan 28 | Narkanda – towards Hatu peak till the road permits – Kalpa
– One complete day in Kalpa with Sunsets and Sunrise not to be missed at any cost. Kalpa is one of the best place to see sunset and sunrise in Himalayas. You can easily walk up towards Roghi village from Kalpa which could act as a small trek for you guys to enjoy snow but it depends how much snow is present on roads. Road to Roghi village is open only in summers though.
Jan 29 | Kalpa – Sangla – Kamru Fort – Sangla
At Sangla, you can visit Kamru Fort, there is trout hatchery region across the river, if it is open at that time of he year.
Jan 30 | Sangla – Shimla
I hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any doubts or need to discuss more about the plan.

shimla-kinnaur ke beech mein koi adventure sports karne ko milenge like river rafting, mountain climbing etc..nako lake kyun jana chahiye matlab views ke liye ya sirf lake ke liye
Hello Radhika,
Sorry for delayed reply as I had some Internet issues. Nopes, these adventure activities are done mainly in summers or when the weather is a bit warm and rivers are flowing below danger levels. You will be running from the water that time of the year forget about rafting
… Yes, the route between Kalpa and Nako is too scenic and moreover you said going to Chango which is further away so I suggested that if you are really interested then go to Nako. For views you can check the link here for my recent visit to Spiti Valley. I hope this helps.

shimla-kinnaur ke beech mein kitne snow pts rahenge.aap keh rahe ki snowfall ko predict nahi kar skate hai lekin fir bhi agar snowfall hua tho aise kitne snow pts honge shimla aur kinnaur ke bich mein.feb me chitkul aur chango tak ja sakte hai kya??
Hello Radhika,
You will get enough snot points or places where you can find snow between Shimla and Kinnaur in February like Kufri, Narkanda, Hatu Peak, Kalpa, Sangla. All there places will be having snow within your reach. Kalpa, Sangla will have snow in villages itself and along side roads, so there is no need of any snow point. Snow, will be everywhere. For snowfall, best options or points will be Hatu Peak, Kufri and surrounding areas, Kalpa, Sangla. On the highway itself you will have plenty of snow on the sides of roads
…
In Feb, you will not be able to go to Chitkul but yes you can go to Chango. Though going to Chango will not be worth rather, make a day’s trip to frozen Nako lake from Kalpa and return on the same day. Do not proceed to Nako if the weather is not good, stay at Kalpa only as you might see snowfall itself in Kalpa.
I hope this helps. Please let me know for any further queries of doubts.

jan last week mein ya feb 1st mein manali visit karna thik hoga muje snowfall aur views dekhna hai aur feb mein toh sirf gulaba tak ja sakte hai.agar kinnaur ki gaye tho snow points like kufri, narkanda hai.aap muje ey bataye ki 20kms ka gulaba jana acha hoga ya kinnaur ka way acha hoga.
Hello Radhika,
Kinnaur Valley will definitely be great option in terms of views but it will be extremely cold as compared to Manali. So, if you are OK with cold conditions then try Kinnaur Valley for sure. The problem is no one can guarantee any snowfall because it is dependent on present weather conditions even on high mountain passes. It is not a time or weather window in which snowfall happens, it depends on luck and weather. Having said that, we were there in Kinnaur in April last week when there was a splendid snowfall at Kalpa out of no where. We never imagined it in April. So, view wise definitely Kinnaur Valley but do carry heavy heavy woolens. Take a look at the link of our trip in last April to Kinnaur linked here and get an idea what is on offer wrt views.
I hope this helps. Please let me know for any further queries of doubts.

hi dheeraj
kinnuar, sangla valley, chitkul are these places are good to visit.if i vist these places in february will there be snowfall in those places.if the places are good to visit then please tell me the places around kinnaur which i can visit
Hello Radhika,
Well, yes Kinnaur Valley does have some great places like Kalpa, Sangla, Chitkul withn reach and then further ahead Nako, Chango etc too. Mostly, people visit Kalpa, Sangla+Chitkul. However, all these places will have temperatures below the freezing point, so expect lots lots of cold. Snowfall again depends upon the weather of the particular day but there will be hige amount of snow for sure. Also, Chitkul will not be accessible at that time and you may find most hotels in Sangla closed too. So, not an ideal time to visit the place I will say. If you really want to enjoy there then plan in March end or April when these are accessible and there is snow too. If you want to see snow then Rohru, Karapather are also not bad options. You will get snow there as well in the months of February or January. If you still want to visit Kinnaur Valley then you can follow the travel itinerary linked here.
I hope this helps. Please let me know for any further queries of doubts.

Dear Dheeraj,
hi, could you plz tell me whether its good to come with a child of 1 year in the month of dec 11 or jan 2012 ?
Hello Sudhir,
I guess 1 year old child is fine as long as you can keep him wrapped up in enough warm clothes so that he do not catch any cold. So, DO carry heavy woolens and monkey caps for sure atleast for the kid but suggested for all members. Moreover, the altitude will not be an issue as Rohtang Pass will not be the possibility to visit during that time. I wrote an article on things/tips to consider while traveling with Kids or Babies to high altitudes few months back that is linked here. As Manali is not at high altitude so it is not applicable in entirety but still you may find some tips helpful.
Also, make sure you spend atleast 2 days around or in Manali before going towards snow points of Solang Valley or Gulaba. It will help your body accustomed to raise in altitude (though not much in terms of acclimatization but helpful indeed).
I hope this helps. Please let me know incase you have more doubts or queries.

maine suna hai ki manali aur rohtang ke 50kms way bahuti acha hota hai.ache views dekhne ko milenge.mai jan ya feb me plan kar sakti hun manali ane ke liye.muje snow bhi dekhna hai aur us 50kms mai max distance bhi dekhna chati hun.muje suggest karo ki jan me possible hoga ya feb mai taki mai atleast 30 to 40 kms dekh sakti..
Hello Radhika,
Yes, views are good between Manali – Rohtang Pass especially after Marhi but in Jan or Feb you will not be able to go beyond Gulaba which is about 30 KMs before Rohtang Pass and about 20 KMs ahead of Manali. So, I guess overall you will only be able to reach just 20 KMs ahead of Manali as roads will be closed ahead of that point. If you want to reach upto Marhi then may be try to plan a journey in April because road clearance starts from March only.
I hope this helps. Please let me know incase you have further queries or doubts.

hi dheeraj,
if i visit himachal in jan last week will there be snow on the road way between shimla and manali?
Hello Ramesh,
Nopes you will not be able to find snow on road between Shimla – Manali on normal route. There is a route that goes via Jalori Pass where you can find snow but that route will be closed at Jalori Pass in January, so you will not be able to reach Manali from that route. In January, you will have many options around Manali and Shimla to see and enjoy snow viz. Kufri, Narkanda, way to Hatu Peak around Shimla and Solang Valley + Gulaba snow points around Manali. But, in between Manali and Shimla, on road, it will be difficult to find.
I hope this helps.

if i visit manali in feb what places i can visit in manali and around manali
Rohan, nothing really will change buddy. You will be able to see all those places which lie before Gulaba viz. Kothi, Solang Valley, Manali, Naggar, Kasol, Manikaran and other in the lower hills. So, you can go upto Gulaba at that time to enjoy snow and then explore lower hills too. I hope this helps.

can we go upto marhi in march??
Rohan, I guess may be or may be not. May be if you are attempting in the March end. It also depends upon the amount of snow present up there. Usually the snow clearance operations starts in March only. If you want to try for Marhi then plan it around mid April types to be on safest side.

can you please share the updates of snow fall or snow availability at Manali/Rohtang pass? Also is Rohtang Pass closed? we are planning to visit Manali this weeked but curious on knowing whether there would be snow available or gone melted because our main interest is to see and play with snow
Hi Ashok,
Well, Rohtang Pass is closed for tourist for season 2011 due to heavy snow presence over there. So, you can expect snow stock at the Marhi snow point. Also, snowfall is expected in the week as per weather predictions so you can surely expect snow in the higher reaches of Manali like Marhi.

Thanks Dheeraj. You are really doing nice work to help other people.
Hi Dheeraj,
we are planning to for a 5 day trip to manali in second week of feb so need you r help for below queries:
1. it is a good time to see snow
2. can we see snow fall at that time or all coverted to ice
3.is it good to go during this time
Hello Anshul,
Yes, it is good time to visit Manali and region around as snow is easily accessible at the snow points of Gulaba or Solang Valley. The snowfall depends on your luck and weather on the very day you visit the Snow points around Manali. No one can predict that but it does happen anytime in winters. If one is lucky, he may even witness snowfall in June as well
… So, try your luck but in anycase there will be plenty of snow present around to play.

dear sharma
Thnx for your valuable advice . One more question.. what will be the best option to visit manali from shimla by bus or by rented car..
Regards
Abhinab Saikia
Hello Abhinab,
Well, both options are equally good depending upon budget and how you travel in general. If you are looking for little more comfort and are OK to spend extra bucks then private car will be better than bus service. Though costly, but private car does have advantages over a public shared bus ranging from privacy to stop anywhere service

If you are visiting Manali in the second week of Feb then you would be most likely be able to visit Gulaba which is about 20 KMs from Manali town and about 14 Kms short of Marhi (the highest snow point) which is further 17 KMs short of Rohtang Pass. So, over all you will be about 31 KMs short of Rohtang Pass from Manali side.
If interested in more details on Manali including sightseeing places, accommodation options, food joints, etc you can go through the Manali travel guide available at the link here.
I hope this helps. Let me know for any further queries or doubts.

Thnx a lot Mr. Sharma..
Is it possible to go beyond Rohtang during these days so that we can reach a snow view point..or the roads will be closed.
Abhinab Saikia
Hello Abhinab,
Earlier the BRO guys announced that they will keep Rohtang Pass as well as Manali – Leh Highway open till the end of November but I read few news where it is declared that they are going to officially close Rohtang Pass on 31st October. However, the locals have put forward the request to keep it open till 15th November if there is not much snow present on the roads. So, it all depends on the snowfall in the upcoming days. If there is heavy snowfall then Rohtang Pass will be closed but surely you will be able to see snow on the Marhi snow point. If there is no snowfall then I guess you will be able to visit Rohtang Pass but just ensure you hire some local taxi with local driver who can take you there.
I hope this helps. As soon as there is any news on closure or snowfall I will update you.

Dear Sharma
We are going to visit manali during 9th to 11th Nov this year. Is there any hope of snow anywhere near Rohtang.Thnx in advance
Abhinab Saikia
Hello Abhinab,
I am not too sure about the snowfall as weather conditions you know, cannot be predicted. As per the weather forecasts for next week (check here), there are high chances of snowfall around 8th and 9th of November and in the coming week too.
But, again these are just forecast which are not 100% sure. So, it all depends on your luck may be that 9th gets shifted towards 10th and 11th and you get to see snowfall. So, keep your fingers crossed as snowfall has started on higher reaches of Himalayas and it is just a matter of luck if you are there to witness them. I wish you all the very best for the journey…

Hey Dheeraj,
How far is Bir-Billing from Manali?
Hey Ramya, well it should approximately be about 170 KMs away from Manali and will require atleast a day’s travel to reach Bir – Biling. But, the place is awesome for Paragliding. I hope this helps.

hello
naggar lies between kullu and manikaran? or else we have to go in another route for naggar?
Hello Nandini,
Naggar lies in the direction of Manali from Kullu on a different road which runs almost in parallel to Kullu-Manali road. For Manikaran, you need to take right direction from Kullu. Near bhunter, Kullu you need to take a right and cross the beas river over a bridge. Once you go to other side, that road is named MDR-30 which goes towards Kasol and Manikaran. Once, you enter MDR-30 there goes a road on your left which is called MDR-29 that goes North towards Naggar and you can follow the same to reach Manali as well from Naggar side. While coming from Naggar towards Manikaran, you can follow MDR-29 till the end and then take a left to enter MDR – 30 to reach Kasol/Manikaran.
I hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any queries or doubts.

we would like to visit Manali end of October or in November to see and enjoy snow. Will there be snow by that time at least near Rohtang Pass? If not what would be earliest time that snow available in and near Manali?
Hello Ashok,
Well, snow is falling on every other day and in case your luck runs away, there are high chances that you will see the snow at Rohtang Pass by the time you are planning to visit. November is a good time to visit and if you really want to make sure that snow is preset then make plans in second or third week of November. Actually, the snow that is falling currently melts away quickly in sunshine of next day. So, if somehow there is a dry spell (bright sunshine) for 3-4 days before you plan to visit Rohtang Pass then you may see either nil or very less amount of snow. That is why if only snow is the purpose of visit and you can plan it later then please plan it after 15th November types else go with your luck and there are high chances you will get to see snow

hi
after the visit of manali and around.what are the tourist places in himachal pradesh except manali and shimla, kufri.i heard that dharamshala, dalhousie, chamba, kangra, khajjiar, palmapur.this package will be good.is that true?
Hello Nandini,
Himachal has loads of places to visit and even around Manali town itself there are plenty of them. It depends upon how many days you have in hand and what exactly are you looking out from your vacation. The above places you mention are just mere tourist places in Himachal and if required you can opt them. Visiting them also depends upon what you are seeking and how much are you ready to travel in a day on vacation, your mode of transport and of course budget

hello dheeraj,
i heard that BRO has announced that rohtang pass will be open till november.if i visti manali in last week of december.how much close can i go to rohtang pass
Hello Nandini,
No one can predict that, it entirely depends upon the amount of snow. Also, it has been first time that BRO has announced that they will keep Rohtang Pass open for the month of November too. So, nothing is certain and only time will tell if they can keep up with their promise. As soon as Rohtang Pass is declared closed, Marhi 17 KMs before Rohtang Pass becomes the first snow point. As the snow increases the snow points goes to Gulaba and then to lower areas such as Nehru Kund or Kothi and Solang Valley. So, in your case it will depend upon weather conditions and the amount of snow.
I hope this helps. Feel free to revert back with more queries or doubts.

hello dheeraj,
the distance between manali and rohtang is 50 kms and you are saying that we can reach only up to gulaba max in january that means i can travel only up to 20kms will it be enjoyable?is there any other facility to go further distance
Hello Nandini,
Nopes there is no other facility to go beyond the snow point. It do not necessarily mean that you will be allowed till Gulaba because depending upon the snow on the roads it can even be around Kothi which is just about 15-16 KMs from Manali. Also, here point is to enjoy in snow. If that is the case then you will be fine. Even at Rohtang Pass people go to enjoy snow mostly, so Gulaba can also serve your purpose too.

will it be good to visit manali in january.actaully my doubt is can visit all tourist places around manali in january
hello sir
if i visit manali in january what palces i can cover between manali and rohtang pass
Hello Nandini,
Yes, if you are OK with cold weather and want to see snow around then January is a good time to visit Manali. Most of the tourist places (details in link below) can be covered during this time apart from Rohtang Pass which gets closed due to heavy snow present on the route. But, it will be trivial only as you can find loads of snow down in the valley only at that time. No tourist places lie between Manali – Rohtang Pass route except Solang Valley which is diversion from village Kothi. You can visit Solang Valley too. Naggar is on the opposite side so again tht is accessible and all other tourist places are within/around Manali town only. Hence, no worries about seeing the places around.

is there any chance to visit rohtang pass in the month of january
hi sir,
tell me the distance between gulaba and rohtang pass
Hello Nandini,
Distance between Gulaba and Rohtang Pass is about 32 odd KMs. You cannot visit Rohtang Pass in the month of January. I guess last year snow was present even at Nehru Kund and road was blocked there only in January, so even Gulaba will be hard to reach in January.
I hope this helps. If interested, for more information on Manali and Rohtang Pass including accommodation options, food joints, must see places etc you can go through the Manali travel guide available at the link here

Hey Dheeraj,
I am planning to visit Manali on 31st of this month. Will Rohtang pass be open? Also will the adventure sports in Solang valley be active at this time of the year? Which other place is good for adventure sports other than Solang valley?
Thanks
Hello Ramya,
Yes, Rohtang Pass will be open by that time. Yes, at Solang Valley adventure activites will be going on and may be even around Rohtang Pass too if snow has fallen by that time. Some of the adventure activities depends on suitable weather, hence it will depend on the very day you land there. Bir – Billing is also good option for adventure sports but it is little far from Manali.

Thanks a lot Dheeraj. This blog is really awesome!
How long will it take to travel from Chakki Bank to Manali and also from Naggar to Chakki Bank? What is your take on hotels at Solang Valley? Are there good hotels apart from the Solang Valley Resort which is very very costly.
Hi
Checked out Johnson hotel/Raison cottage. Liked the property. Since we are two couples, so its apt for us. But will I get a good view of the snow capped mountains? Will it be “the room with a view”
Thank you so much Dheeraj for your feedback.Actually I had checked out your Manali guide and your honeymoon photographs before I had submitted my comment. In fact it was through your website that I came to know of Naggar castle. You really do a wonderful job of educating tourists who are first timers in the region. Keep up your good work.
So if I have to stay in Shimla, do suggest me a hotel.
Hello Munum,
Thanks for such warm words of appreciation in your first comment. It is my privilege to help my fellow travelers to enjoy the nature and their travel to very best. If you want to stay at Shimla then do check out Peterhoff (I guess heritage Hotel now) or Hotel Holiday Home, Shimla (HPTDC). I have heard good feedback of both but I never stayed there because I always tend to avoid staying in Shimla as it never attracted me
.
Well, to check for the view in Raison Cottage you can call up Johnson’s Lodge and ask for the pictures from the cottage with the views. They will provide you if not try have a word with their manager, its highly likely they will provide them. But, I cannot guarantee being never to that cottage.
Now, regarding the hotels in Solang Valley there are few but they are generally on higher range than Manali hotels due to the limited options. Also, you are going in “the costliest week” of the year
… But, anyways you can also check Hotel Iceland link here . We didn’t stay there but I went in to check the rooms which were cozy enough. Unfortunately I do not have any reviews of hotels in Solang though apart from Solang Valley Resort which is too costly.
Chakki bank to Manali is about 300 odd KMs and it will take you close to 10-11 Hrs at least or may be more to cover that distance depending upon the number of stoppages you make.
I hope this helps. Let me know in case you have doubts or queries.

Dheeraj Sharma
Hi Dheeraj,
I really do not have words enough to thank you for all your feedback. In the times when everybody is so taken up by their personal priorities, you gift them the invaluable-your time and your apt guidance.
Your feedback on the travel from Delhi to Manali by HPTDC volvo on your honeymoon trip is really compelling me to think otherwise. I was therefore thinking of checking out from Manali on the 30th and then spending the night at Naggar(31st). On 31st from Naggar we can directly drive to Chakki Bank to board the Jammu Rajdhani at around 9.30pm. The website “must see india” gave the travel time between Manali and Chakki Bank as 4hrs-5hrs. So we thought that if we have lunch at the Naggar castle and move out by say 1pm we would conveniently reach Chakki Bank by 8pm. But as you say it would take about 10-11 hrs, I think we have to move out by 9am latest from Naggar.
So my present itinerary would be
25th Travel from Chakki bank to Mcleodganj(or should I make it Palampur). Qvernight stay .
26th Travel to Manali
30th Check out from Manali. Travel to Naggar. Overnight stay there.
31st Check out from Naggar at around 9 am
Expecting to reach Chakki bank by 9pm with lunch break and evening tea break on the way.
Suggest changes if any.
P.S. Liked the new look of your blog. Good thing you added the REPLY tab with every post.
Hello Munmun,
Firstly, Thanks a lot for such warm words of appreciation. It is just these warm words of appreciation that keeps me going along with the passion to provide any inputs based on my past experiences to help my fellow travelers explore and enjoy the nature at their best. Secondly, I really appreciate your inputs on the new blog design. Currently, I have not launchec it officially but as beta for testing only. If everything goes smooth for next few days then on 15th Aug will be circulating the good news
… Seriously wanted to get that Reply button for comments but there are official and personal commitments that keeps you at bay
. But, any ways thanks.
Now coming back, as I said in my honeymoon triplog that HPTDC bus did created problems to me because I always self-drive due to sheer passion and I never had experience with Volvo buses that is why it made me felt nausea, I guess. Also, a lot of things depend upon the driver as well like if he turns the bus slowly on the curves then there are less chances for the same. I didn’t felt much problems on the return one. And alot of people travel by Volvo as it is the most comfortable means of traveling between Manali and Delhi.
So, if you have experience with the Volvo then better stick to the previous plan otherwise How are you planning to travel between Chakki bank and Manali? If either by bus then again same thing can happen in that route as well. If you are not going by bus then better hire the taxi from Delhi itself for Manali which will be more comfortable and will be with you for the entire trip. Moreover, its way too out of track to goto Chakki bank and then come to Manali thereby loosing one good day in just travel which can be utilized to enjoy only Manali or even day trip to Kasol or as planned the Shimla region. Yes, in case you had planned a day or two to spend in Dharamshala and Mcleod Ganj I would have agreed to go to Chakki bank and coming back.
So, my final advise will be that either hire the taxi directly from Delhi or may be travel to Chandigarh by any train and then hire the taxi from Chandigarh for Manali and come back via Shimla as planned earlier.
I hope this helps. Feel free to discuss if you are having any doubts or queries or if I missed something.
Regards,
Dheeraj Sharma
Checked out Hotel Iceland and also spoke to Mr. Thakur. Tariifs are reasonable.(he has qouted 3000 per night). The view from the property is exactly what we want. Planning to stay there itself. Thanx so much for your input. Would not located this property without your input.
Hello Munmun,
You are most welcome anytime. The is great that you check out Hotel Iceland as in Solang Valley you will find the peace as well as the snow may be all over the Hotel by that time on the basis of general trend. So, enjoy the views. You can explore the Manali town in the daytime at any day and it will ensure you stay away from the hustle bustle of crowd in Manali in the Christmas – New Year week. It will be great if you can share the experience at Hotel Iceland with us too once you come back. It will help other fellow travelers too.

Dheeraj Sharma
I surely will give my feedback. Will trouble you many more queries(including silly ones) till then.
Hi Dheeraj,
Will Log hut cottages offer a view of the snow capped mountains? HPTDC is charging 8000 + taxes for the premium cottages and 6000 + taxes for the deluxe cottages.I am ready to shell out that money if the cottages have a good view of the snow capped mountains. Do let me know if these cottages are worth the money. My choice of hotels are based on the following criteria
1) Location should be away from the hustle and bustle of the market places.
2) The rooms should be with a view of the snow capped mountains.
3) There should be running hot water and properly working room heaters as my daughters(9yrs and 7yrs) are not used to cold conditions(Mumbai is never cold you see).
Your suggestions are awaited for.
Hello Munmun,
Yes, you are correct in saying that all other tourist places in Himachal will allow you to feel snow only if there is any snowfall but Manali is where you will surely get one of the snow points to play in snow at either Solang, Marhi, Gulaba etc. Also, last year the new year was all white in Shimla – Kufri as well so it could be a double bonanza for you if the same happens again this year.
As far as the plan goes, I will suggest to go through the below link to read my review about HPTDC – Log Huts or Hadimba Cottages first. Review of Hadimba Cottages, HPTDC
I guess Johnson’s (Johnson Hotel & Jimmy Johnson Lodge) near Circuit House is much better place than HPTDC Log huts or Hadimba Cottage to shell out money. It has some really nice reviews with best Italian Food in Manali. Even if we do not stay here a meal or two is a must at this restaurant for us always. Since, it is on the Circuit House road I guess they have almost similar views then what Hadimba Cottages have from the front side rooms. But before booking, please ask them for the pictures of the views of snow capped peaks and strictly confirm the bookings for those rooms.
Well regarding hustle bustle, I personally prefer to stay close to mall road as most things are available at walking distance. During Christmas time the rates are bound to be rocket high and I know the crowd will all be in number at Manali. In that case you can ask for there Raison Cottages by Johnsons and inquire about their location and views.
Also, a stay at Naggar Castle, if you love the view is a must. If interested then book front row rooms only, mainly 101,102,103 and 112 Check the views and complete review of Hotel Naggar Castle at below link – Review of Hotel Naggar Castle
Regarding plan, one day will not be worthy to visit Shimla. So, your plan could go like -
26th | Reach Manali and enjoy the mall road, hadimba devi temple, local monastery in the evening
27th | Visit any one of the snow points viz. Solang Valley (prefer this one first), Gulaba or Marhi
28th | Check out from Manali and go to Naggar Castle to spend the day there and stay overnight. If you like Naggar Castle else relax in Manali only.
29th | Naggar to Shimla
– There is no point going to Kufri on this day. You will reach Shimla from Manali by evening and Kufri is ahead of Shimla so no point going there on this day. Also, no point to stay at Kufri as Shimla is much better choice in terms of accommodation.
30th | Shimla – Kufri – Shimla (local sightseeing including Jakhu Temple, Mall road)
– Spare this day for Shimla sighteeing for the second half and in the first half you can go visit Kufri
31st | Shimla – Kalka
– Take toy train, personally, I guess it will be too cold to enjoy
I hope this helps. Feel free to discuss it further if you have any queries or doubts.

Hi Dheeraj,
Thanks so much for your input. We have made total changes in the itinerary based on your input. From what I gather, snow point from Manali(Solang/Gulaba/Marhi or wherever the BRO decides to close the roads)is the sure shot place to get snow irrespective of weather conditions. In the other places we will get snow only if there is a snowfall around that time, which may or may not be. Am I right? My daughter has sacrificed her b’day party for the sake of being in snow. So you realize how important it is for me to go to a place where I will get snow sure shot.
My current itinerary goes as
25/12 Reach Delhi by Rajdhani in the morning. Take a volvo in the evening for Manali.
26/12 Reach Manali in the morning. Check in at the HPTDC Log Huts.
Stay in Manali till 30/12
30/12 Check out from Manali. Drive down to Kufri. Overnight stay at a hotel in Kufri.
31/12 Drive down to Shimla and board the Rail Motor/Himalaya Queen so that my daughters can enjoy the toy train ride. Check in at HPTDC hotel at Parwanoo.
01/01 Board the Shatabdi(early morning 6.15 AM). Reach Delhi by 10.30 AM. Board the Rajdhani in the evening.
Awaiting your suggestions before I book the hotels.
Hi,
I am there at Kulu Manali on 31st October. Any chances of snowfall there or at Rohtang Pass. Or will there be snow fall at Shimla..
Hello Ashish,
Among all tourist places, Manali is the best region to find snow in early winters as Rohtang Pass is easily approachable from Manali and Rohtang Pass is the best place to get snow in early winters. Generally, it is October end or November first week that Rohtang Pass starts receiving snowfall. So if weather gods favour your side then there are high chances that you will be able to see snow. In Shimla you have no chance to find any snow in October. It is in December last week or January first week when Shimla region starts getting snow. You can also check travel guide for Manali at the below link along with some pictures for all the near by places that can be visited around that Manali region:

Hi Dheeraj,
We are planning to go to manali in the month of January 2012. Will it be a good season to see snow fall or atleast snow in rohtang pass.
Hello Priya,
In January you will be able to find snow around Manali town at various snow points viz. Solang Valley, Gulaba, Marhi etc. Generally, the weather is very cold so go prepared with heavy woolens. Rohtang Pass will be closed though due to heavy snowfall or snow but you will find plenty of snow around Manali and Solang Valley itslef. If lucky you may also get a chance to see snowfall as well in January. Try visiting Naggar Castle at Naggar as well which is extremely nice place.
Meanwhile for more details on Manali town, you may like to check the Manali Travel Guide at the link below: Travel Guide for Manali

Hi Dheeraj,
I am planning a trip to manali starting the 17th for a week. Will I see any snow at rohtang at this time of the year?Is highland park worth spending time at?
Cheers,
Arzu
Hello Arzu,
It will be very difficult to get any snow in this time of the year at Rohtang Pass. At best, what you may get is dirty silt and dirty remains of snow around Rani Nalla which is in complete mess now a days. I guess you shall not focus on snow in August. If you are planning a hassle free vacation then going to Rohtang Pass is also not suggested as the slush is too much over there and you may end up in long traffic jam too. Kindly, avoid it rather visit Naggar Castle and Kasol which are very nice places to hang around. But, finding snow in August is a tough ask.
I hope this helps. Please let me know if you have queries.

Hi Dheeraj,
I am planning a trip to manali starting the 17th for a week. Will I see any snow at rohtanf at this time of the year?
is the last week of september or start of october a good time to visit manali. interested to see snow at manali / rohtang pass.
Guide me
Hello Tejas,
In October, although the Manali valley is beautiful so as the weather but you won’t be able to find any snow in Manali or at Rohtang Pass in October. October is the beginning of winter season in Himalayas but finding snow is difficult as only the high mountain passes starts getting snowfall only after mid of October and that too depends upon the weather. Also, last of September or first week of October could be time for Durga Puja holidays, please check before you make any plans in that time as the there is too much rush from Bengal owing to vacation of Durga Puja. Moreover, the villagers from the adjoining villages throng the Kullu – Manali valley as Dusshera festival is celebrated with utmost fervor and importance. So, the whole valley becomes a lot touristy and crowded. If you are planning around that time then please do the bookings in advance as you will find most hotels to be occupied.
I hope this helps. Let me know incase you have any queries. For more details on Manali you can check its travel guide at: Travel Guide for Manali

Planning a holiday in Himachal as a birthday gift to my 9yr daughter whose dream is to play in snow.the itinerary would be as follows:
25/12/2011 – Hire a cab through HPTDC and travel from Chakki Bank to Proceed to Dalhousie.
26th Proceed to Khajjiar, Chamba, Kalatop. Night halt at Khajjiar or Chamba
27th. Proceed to Dharamshala/Mcleodganj (150 kms). Night halt there.
28th Proceed to Manali(250 kms)
29th-31st Manali at HPTDC Log huts.
31st Board Swaraj Express from Ambala Cant.
Please suggest if its an okay plan. Will look forward to suggestion and tips. We are looking forward to 6 days of chilling out and unwinding. We do not want too much of running about. May be we may even cancel Dalhousie/Khajjiar and increase the no. of days in Mcleodganj or vice versa. Please advice.
Hello Munmun,
Manali will be the best place to bet for snow around Christmas. I will try to spend maximum time around Manali. If you really want to enjoy and do not want to rush through the places then I will suggest you should do something like below -
Option 1:
25th | Reach Dharamshala – Mcleod Ganj
26th | Enjoy Mcleod Ganj with Local sightseeing
27th | Dharamshala/Mcleod Ganj – Manali
28th | Manali | Local sighseeing
29th | Manali | Visit Snow point in Manali to play in snow either at Solang Valley or Marhi or Gulaba whichever is the current snow point
30th | Manali – Ambala
31st | Board the train
For all the information on Manali town and local sightseeing around it, do try reading the Manali travel guide at the following link: http://devilonwheels.com/index.php/delhi-to-manali-himachal-pradesh-travel-guide/
Options 2:
25th | Reach Dalhousie/Khajjiar – There is not much difference in Dalhousie and Khajjiar, so better head to Khajjiar.
26th | Khajjiar – Kalatop – Khajjiar (If you like you can opt to stay in Kalatop FRH as well)
27th | Khajjiar – Manali
28th | Manali | Local sighseeing
29th | Manali | Visit Snow point in Manali to play in snow either at Solang Valley or Marhi or Gulaba whichever is the current snow point
30th | Manali – Ambala
31st | Board the train from Ambala
In the second plan Khajjiar – Manali drive will be very long and hence I guess you shall avoid it considering the fact that in December even the daylight hours are less. Try to go for the first plan but if you are really intersted in Khajjiar then you may go for the second but be ready for abou 360 KMs of drive in the hills which will be like 13-14 Hrs easily as I can guess.
I hope this helps. Please let me know if you need any further inputs.
Regards,
Dheeraj Sharma
Hello Sadiq,
October is just the start of winters in most parts of Northern India and of course in higher Himalayas the snowfall starts pouring on occasional days. However, the snow do not persist for much longer time in October because it melts away with the rise in temperature in the day time. Rohtang Pass may start to get snowfall but again it depends on the day you visit if weather say so. I have seen decent amount of snowfall around October 20 at Rohtang Pass and beyond like Khoksar etc. But, again nothing is certain Sadiq and you need to be lucky to experience that. Even one or two days after snowfall you won’t be able to see any trace of snow as it melts pretty quickly in October.
In any other part of India, October snowfall may be present on high passes but they may not be able to host a honeymoon couple. Even in North Sikkim it would be difficult to find snow in October although October being one of the best months to visit Sikkim.
I believe in October if you are looking for snowfall NOT snow and it shall be type of Honeymoon destination then Manali will be the best bet, AFAIK. In Manali, you can enjoy the beautiful valley, romantic stay at Naggar Castle for a day or two, little shopping at mall, great cuisines and if the weather gods praises then may be snowfall or snow at Rohtang Pass as well. I also went for honeymoon in Manali but that was in November and if you like you can check the pictures and account at below links –

hi deeraj,,,thanks 4r ur reply….
so according to u where should i ahead to experience snow between 21 oct to 28 october as i m planing my honeymoon on this dates…
thanks…
Hello Sadiq,
October is not usually the time of snow in Himachal Pradesh or Manali Valley. Rohtang Pass as well may or may not get the snowfall depending upon the weather conditions on particular day. We mere mortals cannot predict the weather on a particular day
… But, as per the previous years the answer unfortunately will be NO. I hope this helps. You can always get more details about Manali in the link below for Manali Travel Guide –

i am planning to Manali in the middle of September. Whether the snow fall will be started that time or not?
Hello Sathya,
Well there will be no snowfall in September in Manali. You can always get more details about Manali in the link below for Manali Travel Guide – http://devilonwheels.com/index.php/delhi-to-manali-himachal-pradesh-travel-guide/
Let me know incase you have more queries about Manali town and near by areas.

Hello Nishtha,
Well, yes you will need to carry woolens as in the shades it will be cold. Just take one or two pullovers or a light jacket depending upon how you guys feel about cold. Its always best backup to have a heavy woolen jacket as well because if the weather changes then there could be cold enough conditions to need one. If you plan to hire snow dresses for snow point from the road side vendors on the way to Rohtang Pass (I guess you should to save your own clothes from getting dirty and wet) then that will be sufficient otherwise you must carry one heavy jacket as well. There will be plenty of snow at Rohtang Pass which should be included as day trip in your period of stay. For more information on Manali check the below travel guide –

Let me know if you have any queries.

i’m planning to go to manali with my family on 19June. Can anybody please tell me that will it be hot or cold? Will i need to pack my woolen clothes or just simple summer wear? Will I be able to see snow anywhere?
Hi Dheeraj,
we had an awesome 5 day trip to Manali. Thanks for help
Priyanka
Trip Itinerary is good but I suggest goto Chandigarh in train if you can. That will reduce 5hr road drive. Then hire a Taxi( we took innova for 5day trip for 12k). This will save you good money over all and you have a car always with you. Taxi union charges lot in Manali and it will cost you same or more if you check it finally. Then return plan to drop at Chandigarh railway to catch a train back to Delhi.
@Mubaikar, That’s great mate. Glad to know that you enjoyed alot. And yes, the suggestion you are giving is also valid since the taxi rates in hill stations are a lot as compared to the taxi rates in the plains.
@Priyanka, I guess you would be spending (if you hire a private taxi) roughly -
1. 6.5K – 7K for tickets to Manali from Delhi in Volvo.
2. 700 to 800 for a Taxi to Kasol + Manikaran from Kullu
3. 400 to 600 for a Taxi to Naggar from Kasol
4. 400 to 600 for a Taxi to Manali from Naggar
5. 700 to 800 for a Taxi to Rohtang Pass or Snow Point
That makes, roughly about 10 K at max.
*The rates of the taxi above are as per my rough knowledge and about an year old. You may need to confirm from the Hotel, to get a better idea. Also, it is a season time so the taxi rates may have gone higher too. In Mumbaikar case for 5 days it cost about 12K and may be for Priyanka, for 7 days it may cost about 14K roughly.
Hello Priyanka, The plan seems good to me and it seems very relaxing trip. I guess you can include a day at Kasol even as Manali + Solang + Rohtang Pass can be covered easily in 3 days with one day each. Ofcourse you will have atleast half a day more to explore Manali which makes it 3.5, more than enough. Secondly, since Rohtang Pass might be open so Solang Valley do not add much flavour and can even be done for half a day trip from manali because all these places are nearby. However, Kasol in itself as a place is different with Israeli culture dominating the taste. So, it will be a good expereince too. There is nothing wrong with your plan but in case you need to add Kasol, you can opt for following -
Day 2: Drop off at Kullu, visit Manikaran and head to Kasol. Relax the whole day at Kasol along side Paravati river and enjoy the different cuisines.
Day 3: Take taxi to Naggar Castle and enjoy its local sighseeing and stay a Naggar Castle
Day 4: Take taxi and reach Manali. Relax whole day, enjoy local sightseeing. stay overnight.
Day 5: Explore Manali more in the first half of the day and visit Solang Valley in the second half. You can even swap the two halves if you like.
Day 6: Take taxi/bus to Rohtang Pass or snow point and enjoy till noon and return to Manali by evening. Enjoy evening in Manali.
Day 7 : Take a volvo back to Delhi

Hi Dheeraj,
How does this plan sound to you
Day 1: Delhi Manali by volvo .

Day 3& 4 : Take a Taxi to Manali.Sight seeing for two days.
Day 5 & 6 : Take a cab/bus to Solang Valley.Sight seeing including Rohtang Pass ( I’m hoping it is open by 22nd May).

Hi Dheeraj,
We are planning a trip to Manali towards March end. Can you tell me whether we can find snow stock in Manali town or Solang valley or Marhi or Gulaba any place at that time ? Will Rohtang Pass be open during that time and where can we enjoy skiing and other adventure sports?
Thank you.
Hello Rinky,
Well, yes you will find a lot of snow stock around Manali in the end of March. The skies are clear now-a-days and tourists are only allowed till Kothi. The snow clearance operations are in progress but I do not think that you will be allowed any further ahead Gulaba, so Rohtang Pass would be closed for you.
You can enjoy all winter sports in Solang Valley at that time. Have FUN and best wishes for your trip…
Let me know in case you need any further inputs
Regards
Dheeraj Sharma
Hi Mumbaiker,
You can surely see loads of snow at Rohtang Pass in May but not in lower highlands of Manali region. This year there has been good amount of snowfall, so there will be huge snow stocks in the month of May but near Rohtang Pass and Marhi (13 KMs before Rohtang Pass) or Gulaba (20 KMs before Rohtang Pass) only. In April/May, even snowfall are likely in near Rohtang Pass / Marhi but again depends on the weather. I have witnessed snowfall in June as well
at Rohtang Pass…
You will not find Rohtang Pass open in the month of April. Tourists vehicles are allowed till Marhi-Gulaba stretch only in the month of April depending on snow cleared from the roads. But, May seems possible for Rohtang Pass only if weather gods permits that particular day.
Well, many good hotels are situated on the Mall road which may not offer full clean views of mountain ranges from the window. However, you will be able to see the snow capped peaks from any hotel of Manali. Hotels in Solang Valley offers much clear views of the might peaks covered in snow. Johnson’s Hotel near Manali circuit house, is a great place and offers great food too. Do not miss to spend a day at Naggar, 30 KMs from Manali. You can check the Manali Travel Guide in Travel Guides section of the blog for more details on these places and views they offer.
Please let me know if you need more details.

Dheeraj Sharma
Hi,
Thanks for info, So I guess in May its hard to see any snow even on land. How about in April 2nd week? I am trying to push a bit early if I still can catch some snow visuals.
Will Rohtang Pass open by April 1st? How far can I go on this road for a good scenic drive?
Can you suggest some best location area /hotels to stay in Manali with nice himalayan views from window.
I wanna start looking deals and booking soon.
Thanks
Hi,
Thanks. Well you can find snow only at Rohtang Pass or Marhi at minimum (which I doubt) in May. In Solang Valley as well, it will be very difficult that you will find snow in May.
Hi Dheeraj,
All your replies are very useful and informative. How is the snow at time of May? I am not expecting snow fall but will there be snow at solang valley?
Hi Rahul,
Well there is a Western Disturbance that seems to heading in first week of March towards Manali region and you might witness snowfall. Although weather is always tricky part to predict
… But, there are chances of snowfall though in the first week of March. It has snowed for the last couple of days but sky was clear today as per few sources in other forums. There is a huge stock of snow waiting for you up there at Solang Valley in Manali region, so have fun and enjoy.
Best wishes for your trip. Let me know if you need more input.

Dheeraj Sharma
Hi Dheeraj,
We are leaving to Manali next week ie 4th March.
Any chance of experiencing snow fall?
and any idea of the current climatic conditions
Thanks,
Rahul
Hello Sanjay,
To be fair enough, in Manali, snowfall in the month of April will be highly unlikely but who knows, its sheer luck
… Last time in our Kinnaur trip we did expereinced snowfall in April last week too
. Even if there would be snowfall, it will be in higher reaches of Manali region like Rohtang or Marhi but not in Manali town.
However, you can enjoy loads of snow stock in the month of April in Manali region (Marhi / Gulaba) and weather will help you enjoy it too
… There will surely be snow activities in the month of April at Gulaba or Marhi snow points which are located on the road towards Rohtang Pass. Rohtang Pass itself will be closed at that time and it is these snow points where you may experience snowfall depending upon weather gods and Hadimba Devi
You can also check the Manali, Travel Guide in the Travel Guides section in this blog, to get most out of your trip to Manali.
Let me know incase you need more details or inputs. Best wishes for your trip…

hi dheeraj,
v r planning to go to manali(solang valley)in the month of april-3rd week.i would like to know whether there will be snow fall/snow related activities in that period.
Hello Priya,
You can enjoy snow in Manali region anytime between January-June but to reach Rohtang Pass I would bet on around Mid May to June. Till May-June you cannot reach Rohtang Pass as it remains closed and vehicles are allowed till the Snow Points of Marhi / Gulaba depending upon the point till where snow has been cleared by BRO.
Gulaba is a lower point which is accessible almost all the year and Marhi is upper snow point much near to Rohtang Pass. Once BRO cleans all the snow till Rohtang Pass one is allowed to visit the pass. So, if you want to enjoy just snow then January-June would be great for Manali region but if you want to visit Rohtang Pass then post May is the best chance.
Please let me know if you need more details.
Hi,
we are planning to go to Shimla,Kullu and Manali. Our kid want to play in the snow. we want to know when is the best time to visit Rohtang pass to have fun in snow with my kid. we are planning only after april. please suggest the best season to visit for playing in the snow.
Hi Aman,
You will find plenty of snow to play at that time. It depends on your luck regarding the snowfall as they can only be predicted by presence of some Western Disturbances. Hence, if your luck favours you may get to see snowfall but anyways you will have huge stock of snow around Manali region. As far as places are concerned in Manali, you can opt to see the following
1. Manali Local sightseeing that includes Mall Road, Hadimba Temple, Manu Temple, Local Monastery
2. Snow point near Gulaba as Rohtang Pass will be closed or Snow point in Solang Valley to enjoy winter sports as well
3. Naggar Castle just 30 odd KMs from Manali (A meal at Balcony table is a must)
You can read the entire Travel Guide for Manali using the link below which has some pictures and more details about the above places
Travel Guide for Manali
Let me know if you need more details.
Hi Dheeraj,
i will be visiting Manali on Feb 24th. will i be able to see snowfall and snow at that time. i will be staying for 4 days there. can you let me know which places i can see in and around manali.
I would be visiting Delhi – Manali – Shimla – Delhi from 23nd jan to 28th Jan11. I am from Bangalore.
1.As far as cloths are concerned should we require 2-3 thermals (top & bottom. will the cold be unbearable: everyone is scaring me!!
2.Which are the important places that one should not miss within my tight schedule
Hello Vish,
1. Yes, you would need atleast 2 pair (top-bottom) as I don’t feel you would like to wear a single pair for 5 days
… Well I don;t feel cold would be unbearable as we guys do live up here in cold conditions of winters. When in night the temperature dips considerably then you would be sleeping well, inside your Hotel room under a warm quilt and of course a room heater. So, no worries at all and while playing in Snow of course you would be wearing the clothes which you would need to rent from Manali to protect your clothes from getting wet and dirty. Those overcoats or jackets would help you fight the cold in the day.
2. Well, if you are visiting Shimla and Manali noth in short period, then at Shimla side do visit Mall road, Jakhu Temple and Kufri/Narkanda. At manali side do local sight seeing, Gulaba/Solang Valley Snow points.
Please let me know if you need more details.
Have a great time
hey dheeraj;
we r planning to visit manali on december 26th . so i just want to know that Is snowfall approaching that time?
Hello Swapnil,
Buddy, no one can predict the snowfall but you can find plenty of snow around Manali by December end. So, enjoy the snow there and if you are lucky you will find snowfall too
I hope this helps. Let me know incase you have any queries or doubts.
Regards
Dheeraj Sharma
p.s. -> Sorry for the delayed response as I was traveling.
Hello Dheeraj
I will be visiting Himachal Pradesh from Jan 22nd to Jan 30th,2011. I hope to have an amazing experience this time as this is my first trip to North India and i want to see amazing views of snow covered Mountain valleys. I am very concerned at this moment as to what amount of clothing i should be using to beat the cold. I plan to wear a semi-woolen thermal inner wear(pure woolen inners were expensive….about 1800rs for uppers + lowers…so i got something for 800rs.The shopkeeper told me this will be good enough for indian weather.)+T-Shirt+90% woolen sweater+Jacket. Do you think this will be enough to keep me warm enough?. I just read all the comments here and you were suggesting to get good thermal inners(upto 2-3 in one comment) to beat the cold and now i am wondering if what i bought is enough.
Himachal will be for sure an awesome break for me from the hot weather here in Chennai. I hope i get to visit Rohtang this period. I will be visiting kullu, manali,Dharamshala,Dalhousie and Shimla.
So as you can see,i do not have much time to visit all the places in such a short trip of 9 days. Can you suggest me the best places to visit in each of these locations?. I would like to trek amidst breathtaking views, do a night camp somewhere with little people around me.
I should have probably started researching about these places a month ago but sadly my work life has been pretty hectic. I hope my manager will not see this thread…lol…i plan to give the same old lame excuse…*my grandpa expired (or) i had a small accident and i cannot walk for a week*
And yeah…we are carrying couple of Old Monks too!!
Cheers
Teja Namburi
Cheers
Teja
Great to know that you would be coming to North for enjoying snow and cold weather
…
1. Well, for woolens that will be enough but do carry a jacket which is good enough to protect from cold conditions here. Well since the tour will be around 7-8 days you would need more thermals atleast one more pair I feel. The inner thermals doesn’t cost that much as for Rupa or Neva (good qualities) you can get for around 300-400 per pair. So, I would suggest you to buy once you come to Delhi or from any of the destination you plan to visit. The old monks would definitely help
2. Now buddy, Rohtang Pass is already closed due to heavy snowfall but yes of course you can enjoy snow at snowlines of Gulaba or Solang Valley. Manali is also covered in snow since day before yesterday and I can imagine all peaks will be wearing thick white blanket of snow to offer mesmerizing views.
3. Well I think that 9 days would be sufficient to visit Shimla – Manali – Dharamshala – Dalhousie – Kullu but definitely hectic. The bottom line is you will be most of the time travelling instead of enjoying your holidays and time in the mother nature.
Please let me know if you need any other info. or inputs of any kind. We can also chop an itinerary for you as well.
We are going to Rohtang on 5thApril 2011.Will we get snow and will Rohtang pass be open at this time.
@Pinki, Well surely you will get lots of snow that time of the year. However, Rohtang Pass will not be open by that time and you may be able to reach till Marhi / Gulaba but not Rohtang Pass. Usually, Rohtang Pass opens in June and last year i.e. 2010 it was closed well into July as well. Please let me know if you need more info.
Hi,
i am planing to visit Manali in last week of Oct & first week of Nov, Can any one tell me whether there will be snow in Rothang Pass so we can play?
& also the atmosphere there during that duration as i m planning with my family?
Thanks & Regards,
Kirti
@Kirti, well this cannot be said so much in advance considering the last year weather conditions. There was not much snow rather no snow in October + till mid November in 2010 at Rohtang Pass and on the contrary there was plenty of snow in the first week of November almost till Manali in 2009.
So depending how the weather plays the role, you will find snow at Rohtang. Fairly, if weather remains usual unlike 2010, you may surely witness snow at Rohtang Pass by November first week.
As far as weather is concerned, it will be pleasant during that period although woolens would be required.
Best time to get snow at Rohtang Pass is January to June.
We are planning for Manali from 7th to 10th of January. Can we’ll see snow fall during this period ?
Hi Deepak, well there is a lot of snow stock now at Manali region including Solang Valley which you guys can surely enjoy. As far as snow fall is concerned, it is the matter of luck how weather turns up a particular day.
The Met department do have predictions for a fresh snowfall around 7th January, so all the very best for the same but surely you will enjoy and play in lots of snow stock waiting for you up in the valley of god/goddesses, Manali
Please let me know if you need more details.
Hi Sir,
Can u please tell me which is the best season to visit Kulu-manali to see snow? I am planning to visit in the month of Aug-2011. will i be able to see some snowfall and on the otherhand can i visit all other tourist places too?
Kindly suggest.
Well, the best season to see snow in Kullu – Manali region is January to June (Max). In the ending months of May-June you would be able to see snow at Rohtang Pass for sure but apart from that if you are lucky you may see some leftover in July as well.
It is highly unlikely that you will be able to see snow even at Rohtang Pass in August, as this time on our Ladakh journey we crossed Rohtang Pass in August first week and there was no snow at all in any of the passes till Leh including Rohtang Pass.
You will be able to see all tourists spots near Kullu – Manali region all throughout the year.
Let me know if you need more details.
Guys, Vikram (above) has returned from the trip and confirms that currently tourists are being allowed to visit the Rohtang Pass and he enjoyed lots of snow around 3 feets at the top
…
The North face of Rohtang Pass does have plenty of snow to enjoy.
Also, there has been predictions by IMD that a western disturbance hitting the Himalayas starting today resulting in fresh snowfall so you can expect a snow white new year at least as per the IMD predictions goes on.
Currently, the temperatures at night in Manali region are well below freezing point i.e. in minus
…
Good news for those looking for snow, as the IMD predicted there has been heavy snowfall all over the Himalayas on the dates of prediction including Rohtang Pass, Manali, Kufri, Jalori Pass, Sach Pass, Kaza, Baralacha Pass etc.
So all you guys venturing to Rohtang Pass or Manali region on new years eve will find plenty of snow to play with in the valley although the vehicular traffic towards Rohtang Pass has been stopped till Kothi as there is plenty of snow in the below reaches.
Enjoy and do try to share the pictures with us as well.
Guys,
I’m planning to visit Manali in first week of March with Family and we are primarily traveling to catch up some snow.
Could anyone suggest if March 1st week would be a good time to travel keeping snow in focus?
Also Please suggest good Volvo bus service from Delhi.
Thanks and Regards,
Sanjeev
Hi Sanjeev,
Well, yes you can catch up snow in March at Solang Valley as well on the snow points towards Rohtang Pass which are Gulaba/Marhi. I believe till march Rohtang will surely be closed but you will find lots of snow around Solang and Gulaba/Marhi. BTW Rohtang was supposed to be closed in December only but freak weather this year all over has maintained a dry spell of snow in the valley.
Even the weather starts to become a bit pleasant on sunny days in March, so you would surely enjoy the time.
Volvo service of HPTDC is I feel the best bet keeping in mind they don’t foul play in terms of bus conditions.
Please let me know if you need more details.
HI Dheeraj
…. m reaching manali on 31st and will be there till 4th, have got my reservations done in the club mahindra resort, what places do u suggest to visit, we r 2 couples (no children). hope to catch some snow around in manali. Btw keep up the good work.
thanks in advance
Thanks a lot Kapil. Well yes surely there will be snow around Rohtang Pass atleast if it remained open for you guys by the time you reach there. HRTC buses have been stopped from Manali to cross Rohtang but that is due to post Rohtang route and if the valley still has dry spell of weather, I see no reasons which would stop you playing in snow at Rohtang Pass which lots of tourists are doing now a days.
If there is some fresh snowfall then you might not even need to go to Rohtang Pass and can find it either at Snow points of Solang Valley or Gulaba. Day before yesterday itself there was 4inches of snowfall at Rohtang-Koksar stretch, so you could be lucky to see some fresh snowfall with time to come. Just pray to snow gods
For places to visit around Manali,
1. Manali Local which includes – Manu Temple, Hadimba Temple, Local Monastery, Mall Road and a must visit/dine Old Manali Town. You can go to Manu Temple in the evening followed by dinner in Old Manali town which offers wide varieties of cuisines.
2. Rohtang Pass / Solang Valley Snow points
3. Naggar Castle, I would say is atleast my must visit above all whenever I visit Manali. You get to see some breathtaking views from restaurant tables having your meal.
You can check the Manali Travel Guide for detailed information http://devilonwheels.com/index.php/delhi-to-manali-himachal-pradesh-travel-guide/
Let me know if you need more details.
Hai Amit & deeraj,
I’ve just returned from manali trip.we were there from 11DEC to 14DEC. It was so disappointing that we couldn’t catch up with the snowfall. Not even at Gulaba. We were stopped at Gulaba irrespective of the Good sunny weather (infact bad for us). After persistent persuasion the officials heeded and we were allowed upto Marhi.Even there we were only able to enjoy the left over snow.i suggest, officials should get regular updates on weather from met dept. and take decision accordingly, just blantant stopping of tourist from reaching the heights of rohtang really frustrates travellers from extreme parts of india.A patrol kind of system which accompany the touristt to reachable distance would be a great idea. The real solution would be widening & strengthening the roads, coz it already attracts huge tourist interests and it can be a money spinner ( even a toll road would solve this purpose.
Hence all travellers are advised to postpone their travel till mid january to early february. Thats when the real fun starts as suggested by the locals.
Happy travel..
@Elangovan,
Thanks alot for the info buddy. Unfortunately there is a dry spell of snow this time surprisingly in the valley. Last year, in November start there was snowfall even in Manali which was wuite strange and this time it’s close to January and only one/two snowfalls. Weather is surely freak this year.
Well to visit Rohtang and not let BRO stop you, you need to leave around 6.30 AM as generally the BRO puts the barrier around 8-9 AM. So if you cross Marhi by 7 AM you are through or else try some locale driver who can let you visit the Rohtang of course you need to pay him more
…
The problem is sudden change in weather and they already had two casualties of the season, buddy it’s not the clear sky but the ice on roads. They are over protective for tourists as they are liable towards their safety and the ice on the roads will makes it dangerous and so its not advisable to do Rohtang early morning/late evening in the winters.
I agree on the revenue generation but it’s very tough to keep the road for such harsh weather as till date no material has been formulated which can withstand the snow for more than six months.
…
In such terrain it’s difficult to maintain roads but yes, ofcourse there shall be definitive guidance which shall come from IMD and BRO to make every tourist happy
I just had a word with one of my friends who came yesterday itself. He told me that since weather has been clear and lot of ice has been cut by NGOs/other official bodies there is no danger of going to Rohtang and tourists are being allowed to go to Rohtang now a days.
You can enjoy snow at Beas Nalla as well as Rohtang Pass. There is snow present at Rohtang Pass and quantity is also good enough to let you play around
. Other winter activities are on full moon in Solang Valley. The Winter Carnival will also start in Manali w.e.f. 23.1.11 to 27.1.11 and couples can enjoy the party at Manali Club house as well on the even of Christmas.
Hi Dheeraj,
We plan to go to Manali on 24th till 28th Dec, 2010.
Wanted to ask you the following:
1. Any chances of snowfall?
2. How cold is it?
3. Any suggestions for cheap budget hotels….we r 2 couples…
4. Any other suggestions for the route to be taken from Gurgaon/New Delhi.
Thanks and shall wait for your reply.
Ashima
Sorry for the delayed reply but I was out on a trip to Rajasthan. I planned to visit Himachal but changed the plans at the last moment due to lack of snow up in the hills.
Well I don’t think you will find any snow near Manali now a days as all have gone or melted into ice. Currently, although the buses are plying for locales through Rohtang Pass towards Keylong but BRO doesn’t allow tourists to visit there and stop them near Marhi/Gulaba. Unfortunately due to dry spell in the valley there is now snow present there and I seriously doubt the snowfall in coming up days as the sky is usually clear for the last few weeks now. Even locales doesn’t have such predictions in the time period you are visiting so I am sorry to say you may not find snow up there
@Ashima,
Please find my comments inline…
1. Any chances of snowfall?
Very less chances but who knows…If you are lucky enough..
2. How cold is it?
Well it’s too cold/chilling up in the valley especially in the nights/mornings, my cousin just returned from the valley day before yesterday.
Daytime weather is pleasant enough but be ready for some chilling winds and take heavy woolens for sure.
3. Any suggestions for cheap budget hotels….we r 2 couples…
Well you can find the budget hotels in the Old Manali or even near Beas Bridge left bank. The River View hotel just few yards towards right of the Beas Bridge is a good option so as a Hotel just before River View. Although the hotel before River View was better but since we had already paid in the River View so we didn’t stayed there. You can get heavy discounts (close to 40-50%) in Manali especially on all the Hotels on near Beas Bridge or Old Manali. If you need the number of River View let me know I can search my records to find it.
4. Any other suggestions for the route to be taken from Gurgaon/New Delhi.
The best route would be…
Delhi-Ambala-Chandigarh-Ropar-Swarghat-Bilaspur-Sundernagar-Mandi-Kullu-Manali
@Bharat,
Since, you are visiting at the end of the month if you are lucky enough you may get to see snow… I would definitely post you as soon as it snows at Manali or near by hills.
Let me know if you need more details.
Is it snowing in manali now a day..what are the chanses of snowfall on 31st dec?
sharma ji i need to go around 23rd december you expect snow now please do tell the experience when you come back on 21st dec 2010
i want going to manali from 23december to 27 december. can i enjoy snowfall at this time
Amit, yes you can enjoy snow during your visit as currently snow is present at Rohtang Pass as well as near Beas Nala (Marhi) few KMs before Rohtang Pass. Both snowlines are just takes 1.5 – 2 hrs to reach from Manali town. If snow gods favors it might snow in couple of days and you may enjoy the snow/snowfall in even Solang Valley which is just 30 minutes drive from Manali.
I am heading to the valley tomorrow and would be able to provide you more updated status once I return from the trip on 21st December.
Please let me know if you need more details.
hey wud u be abl to catc snowfall around manali?? btwn 20th to 25th or is kufri a btr option??
Hi Vikram, Well as far as chances are concerned you have better chances to see snow around Manali. It is near Rohtang Pass that snow lies now a days and due to dry spell of snow for the last 15 days all the snow at below regions like Gulaba, Solang Valley etc have melted out. Kufri by far doesn’t stand a chance to offer snow as there has not been any for the season so far. So, I would say dash out for Manali and you have better chances to see snow around. Let me know if you need more details.
Dear Friends,
Well,I’m planning to visit manali on Dec 29 to 2nd Jan.
During this time can I get snow in Manali town? I & my family like snow…
Hey Ashok, Surely you will be able to see snow around Manali town. Although it’s unlikely that you will find it in Manali town (freak weather, so you never know how lucky you are) but yes surely you can visit Gulaba/Marhi snowline or Solang Valley Snowline in that period of time where you will find plenty of snow to play around…
If in doubt about taxi you can also book tickets to visit snowline for HPTDC deluxe bus service.
Please let me know if you need further inputs.
I’m planning to visit Manali from Jan 1st to 5th!! I hope Rohtang pass remains open
Well Rohtang pass is already closed my friend. So you will not be able to visit Rohtang although you will find plenty of Snow in Solang Valley as well as Gulaba / Marhi which are few KMs before Rohtang Pass. Gulaba is the last point where tourists are allowed in winters and from there on you will need to trek to reach further heights.
Please let me know if you need further inputs / help.
That seems to be perfect time to visit Kullu-Manali region if you love snow and heights. As far as cold is concerned its already freezing and chilling in the hills up in that region as per my friends living there and to beat the snow old monk is the right choice
lol .. just kidding … You may like to confirm following points for negotiating the cold
1. Do take heavy woolens with you especially a heavy woolen jacket.
2. Do take 2-3 pairs of inner thermals cots
3. Do take woolen long socks. Airtight shoes would be perfect to help you avoid freezing feet.
4. Do not exert yourself too much and try to keep your body hydrated on the day when visiting snow points.
5. Take at least one complete day rest in Manali before venturing further heights. i.e. snow points in Solang or Gulaba
DO NOT go to snow points on the very first day you reach Manali region.
Other points you may like to consider are –
1. If you have time do try to visit Naggar Castle (30 KMs away from Manali)and have a meal in the restaurant balcony which offers some breathtaking views. You may opt for spending one day there as well.
2. HPTDC is running 30% off season discounts currently[also valid for Naggar Castle], if you like to stay in their hotels. All other private hotels can offer as much as 40-50%

I would be looking forward to read your travel experience on your blog, buddy!!! Do share the links when you will be back.
I am also hitting the highway on 16th December with unknown destination
… But it would certainly be either of Kasol-Manali / Khajiar-Dalhousie / Munsiyari … I will share my experience with you too…
how snow this year
Well friend it has snowed at Rohtang last week as well and you can enjoy the snow at Rohtang Pass / Gulaba / Marhi / Solang Valley, as in winters this snow does not melt easily. Also, due the the snowfall last week Manali – Leh highway has been finally closed for this season and even BRO stop tourists going to Raohtang Pass to ensure safety
