Cheap Budget Hotels or Accommodation in Leh – Ladakh

Moderate Budget Hotels or Accommodation in Leh – Ladakh

In this third article of the series – Preferred Hotels or Accommodation options in Leh – Ladakh, I am enlisting down some of the preferred places to stay in Nubra Valley – Ladakh which are cheap budget (Rs 300 – 500) types as well as moderate budget (Rs 600 – 1200) types accommodation and good for stay. So, if you are looking for a decent, clean and comfortable but moderate budget options of stay in Nubra Valley – Ladakh then you can refer the list of below guest houses or hotels compiled after reading various resources/reviews of many people over Internet mainly IndiaMike and BCMT forums (as said earlier, of course, I cannot stay in all of them ).

Most of these places are ideal to stay with family as well because they offer decent comfort and facilities which a family may require but looking out for moderate range budget accommodation options. However, if you are looking for an exceptional in-room service, finest linen, luxuroious and ultra comfortable rooms in a hotel and that too for this price range and in such remote places as some villages of Nubra Valley then perhaps this list may not be for you or I shall say this place (Nubra Valley – Ladakh) is not for you. Well, you may find one or two such services too in the below guest houses but no certainty.

Nubra Valley is one of the hottest tourist spot in Ladakh and Diskit is one of the town which people generally make the base to explore rest of the Nubra Valley. The biggest reason of Diskit being so popular is that it offers better and varied amount of accommodation options when compared to the rest of the places like Hunder, Panamik, Sumur, Turtuk in Nubra Valley being its head quarters. No doubt, Hunder is also starting to become popular with more and more options coming up.

Good Hotels or Accommodation options in Nubra Valley, Ladakh

Below, I have segregated the list of good accommodation options or hotels available in Nubra Valley by the villages viz. Diskit, Hunder, Sumur, Turtuk, Panamik etc. These are the villages in Nubra Valley mostly visited by the travelers and tourists. You can easily refer to the section of village where you plan to stay overnight on your trip to Nubra Valley in Ladakh.

On request of some many avid readers of the blog and so many like minded travellers seeking guidance for their tour to Leh – Ldakh, I would like to sketch below one of the most common itinerary followed by many of Leh – Ladakh lovers including me which covers all three major tourist destinations of Ladakh including Nubra Valley, Pangong Tso Lake and Tso Moriri Lake. The itinerary also covers Srinagar – Leh Highway as well as Manali – Leh Highway, so it is apt for those looking forward to cover the entire circuit.

I have started from Srinagar side because it gives at least two benefits, if not more. First, the body gets better acclimatized due to gradual ascent by the time you reach Leh and when you return via Manali – Leh Highway, hence less chances of getting stuck with Acute Mountain Sickness (more info on AMS here) and more enjoyment of views on Manali – Leh Highway. If you start via Manali – Leh Highway then most of the terrain runs over 4000 Mtrs of altitude and by the time you reach such altitude your body is not properly acclimatized. Hence, many people fall sick on Manali – Leh Highway despite covering in 25:75 ratio (Manali – Keylong, Keylong – Leh) in terms of distance. Secondly, you save one day as Tso Moriri and Tso Kar Lakes can be adjusted once you start towards Manali from Leh. This way you are not required to return to Leh from Tso Moriri to go towards Kargil or Srinagar. For now, these two reasons are good enough to start your journey from Srinagar side …

In this second article of the series – Preferred Hotels or Accommodation options in Leh – Ladakh, I am enlisting down some of the preferred places to stay in Leh – Ladakh which are moderate budget (Rs 600 – 1500) types accommodation. So, if you are looking for a decent, clean and comfortable but moderate budget options of stay in Leh – Ladakh then you can refer the list of below guest houses or hotels compiled after reading various resources/reviews of many people over Internet mainly IndiaMike and BCMT forums (of course, I cannot stay in all of them ).

Most of these places are ideal to stay with family as well because they offer decent comfort and facilities which a family may require but looking out for moderate range budget accommodation options. However, if you are looking for an exceptional in-room service, finest linen, luxuroious and ultra comfortable rooms in a hotel and that too for a price range of Rs 1000 – 1500 then perhaps this list may not be for you. Well, you may find one or two such services too in the below guest houses but no certainty.

Shanti Guest House

Economic, good, clean, homley and very much Recommended but generally runs full during season so planned booking required. Shanti Stupa and Changspa Road are very near by. Parking on road but not an issue. In night, you need a stick for stray dogs and torchlit as there is no street light on road leading to the guest house.
Asia Guest House and Hotel

Economic, good, clean, homley and very much Recommended. Nice little garden and Wi-Fi too now-a-days. Right on Chanspa road means lots of cuisines near by the hotel including the famous Jeevan Cafe. Asia Hotel run by the same owner as a part of same complex (though rooms, kitchen, sit-out areas separate)	is also equally good. But, the prices are a bit higher for hotel as compared to the Guest House whose rooms are basic but almost equally comfortable as compared to the hotel.

In this first article of the series – Preferred Hotels or Accommodation options in Leh – Ladakh, I am enlisting down some of the preferred places to stay in Leh – Ladakh which are cheap and very economic. If you are looking for a decent, clean and comfortable but cheap or very economic options of stay in Leh – Ladakh then you can refer the list of below guest houses or hotels compiled after reading various resources/reviews of many people over Internet mainly reading IndiaMike and BCMT forums (of course, I cannot stay in all of them ).

Most of these places are ideal to stay even for long time, say months and people indeed have stayed for months in many of them. However, if you are looking for an exceptional in-room service, finest linen, satellite TVs, Internet facilities etc. in a hotel and that too for a price range of Rs 200 – 500 then you must be kidding me, am I right … Well, you may find one or two such services too in the below guest houses but no certainty.

You can check the location of these guest houses which are near by each other at the wikimapia link here.

However, for bachelors or backpackers or others who want cheap/economic options of stay for longer duration in around Leh Ladakh, these hotels may be worth to look out …

In the previous article on How to calculate cost or budget for Leh – Ladakh trip I mentioned that if you hire a private taxi for Manali – Leh journey then it can easily cost you about Rs 15000 – 18000 just for a drop from Manali to Leh or Leh to Manali. However, there is another way out if your luck is with you. What is it? Well, there is a rule that Leh registered taxi cannot pickup passengers from Manali while coming back and same rule applies that Himachal or Manali taxi cannot pickup passengers from Leh while coming back to Manali. Hence, the charges of private taxis are so high as the drivers have to get costing for both ways. But, we are humans after all and at times these rules are broken for the benefit of both passenger and driver. Driver charges the operational and fuel cost to take you back from the place where he is not authorized, i.e., if you can get hold of one, then Ladakh taxi can take you back from Manali by paying just fuel and operational cost and similarly, Himachal/Manali taxi can take you back from Leh at around similar cost.

Now, the best part. This operational or fuel cost can range from Rs 4000 – 6000 depending upon how you bargain with the taxi driver. Hence, the cost of Manali – Leh and Leh – Manali comes down from 2 X (15k-18K) = Rs 30K – 36K to a mere Rs 8000 – 12000… And, you save the entire cost of food and accommodation almost for the entire trip …

Ha ha ha, However, the toughest part is to find such a deal in both directions until unless you have sufficient contacts with both Ladakh Taxi drivers as well as Manali taxi drivers who are friendly enough with you to fix such a deal. May be on your third or fourth trip to Ladakh you can manage such a handsome deal. Realistically speaking, with little ease you can at least chip in with Rs 10K – 11K savings. How?

When you reach Manali try to fix the deal with Himachal Taxi driver first for one side journey to Leh. He will of course ask you anywhere about Rs 15-18K for a drop to Leh. Once you settle for one side, then tell him about your interest to come with him only from Leh as well on one of the day he will be returning from Leh. Depending on your Leh – Ladakh itinerary, fix the day and deal with him. He will probably ask you anywhere between Rs 4000 – 6000 depending upon the bargaining skills or may be for entire package. If the taxi driver do not agree then move to some other one and repeat the same process or in a way you like. You will need to definitely explore some options to find such a deal. Hence, reaching Manali or Leh taxi stand a day before or early morning is highly advisable.

A true account of my friend who followed the above process and successfully booked such a deal for Rs 21,000 in June 2011 where he paid Rs 4000 for return journey from Leh to Manali. Thereby saving good Rs 11K – 12K for investing in local taxis within Leh – Ladakh

Problems or Challenges finding such deals

Ideally, the driver while coming alone from the other end, does this journey in single day. So, you be ready for some tough time with this single day cannon ball run. Otherwise, you can always pay a bit more and ask him to cover the journey with a night halt. If you are short on time then finding such a deal will be bread on butter …

It might be possible that the day when the driver return to his native place from Leh or Manali, you may not be ready to return as per the itinerary. Hence, tweak and synchronize your itinerary with taxi’s near by return date or ask him to accommodate you in some of his friend’s taxi who is returning on the day you have planned to return.

AMS is always an issue while traveling from Manali to Leh. Hence, you do not have the option to go via Srinagar side and minimize AMS related issues. So, follow the tips on minimizing AMS and may be halt your Manali – Leh journey on Keylong or Jispa thereby avoiding stay at high altitudes of Sarchu or Pang. If you need more details or tips on AMS and importance of acclimatization then do read the article linked here

It may not be possible to find such deals if you plan to go via Srinagar side and come back via Manali side or vice-versa. The problem gets complicated here in way exactly like you are finding such deals on both sides i.e. from Manali as well as Leh without knowing any driver. However, one day when you have made sufficient trips to Ladakh and had enough contacts of drivers then yes, such a deal is possible too

Few tips to find cheap taxis to Leh – Ladakh

As soon as you find a non-native (Ladakhi driver in Manali and Himachali driver in Leh) exchange your contact numbers. Do not talk much there at the taxi stand and fix the deal and pickup point over phone or away from taxi stand so that other native drivers cannot get into the act and create problems for that non-native taxi driver.

If by chance, some native driver get into the act confidently tell him that you were just clarifying on the raod conditions and status as you are having your own vehicle to drive back and little concerned. Then fix rest of the deal and pickup point over phone.

Try to stroll around mall road in taxi stands of Manali or Leh around night, when most of the non-native drivers reach. Get hold of any of them and quickly exchange phone numbers and may be tell him to come over away from taxi stand. (Thanks to Dhiraj Debbarma for sharing the idea of night stroll in the comment below)

I am sure that after one trip to Leh – Ladakh you will feel the itch to go again (such is the beauty of this heavenly place), so try to keep records of contact numbers of such drivers, such that they can be contacted for such deals on the next trip. Share the numbers with other fellow travelers too, may be here, other forums, your friends who are traveling to Ladakh etc.

Find and ask on forums, blogs, sites etc for such contact numbers of taxi drivers doing Manali – Leh, Leh – Manali, Leh – Srinagar, Srinagar – Leh… Contact them and try to fix the deal or ask them when they will be reaching non-native place based on the itinerary. (Thanks to Kaushik Da for this tip in the comment below)

Note-: Same rules apply between Srinagar and Leh but I have heard many drivers of Leh and Srinagar both, run their taxis from other ends as shared taxis where they charge about Rs 1200 – 1500 per seat for a drop. In that case, it will be more difficult to find such a deal. Hence, I have not mentioned anything about Srinagar though you can apply the same process between Srinagar and Leh as well, who knows your luck is on higher end of the curve at that moment …

Conclusion

In the end, all I have said is a bit difficult to find but it is indeed possible and few people do it or have done it. Just it depends on your luck and the way you deal with people after meeting them. So, while planning your trip to Leh – Ladakh try to explore this option as well or keep it at the back of your mind and who knows you may "manage a 2N/3D Nubra and 1N/2D Pangong Tso trip from the savings you get from it.", as quoted by one of my friend and a super passionate traveler Kaushik da in this IM thread here. In fact, the source and motivation of this article is Kaushik da and that IM thread only, so special thanks to him for pointing me out.

I would be really happy if any one of you found such a deal and have experience with it. Any tips, suggestions, contacts, anything that save us money for taxis to Leh – Ladakh, will be helpful for other fellow travelers too. So, do share your thoughts and valuable inputs or resources on the same with us too.

Every now and then I keep getting queries on the budget for Ladakh trip, so I guess a post around it will be helpful for many looking forward to prepare or analyse the budget of their upcoming Leh – Ladakh trip in 2012 and years to come . To be very frank, the budget of any trip including Leh – Ladakh depends a lot upon person to person and the taste + comfort he/she prefers. Leh – Ladakh is such a place where you can get varied stay options depending on your choice of comfort, preference, conditions and circumstances . The variety may range from Rs 100 stay at some Dhabha tent to Rs 250-500 stay at low cost hotel/homestay to Rs 700 – 1500 at medium cost hotels to Rs 3000 and above for hotels that offer much more comfort etc.. The same thing applies for food as well and depends what you want to eat (Pizza or Dal Bhat or Roti+Dal Fry or Maggie / Veg. Non-Veg. etc.) and more importantly where you want to eat and drink … But, in any case I would try to sketch a basic average budget analysis on Leh – Ladakh trip based on the choice of accommodation and food which majority of people opt.

Given below is a basic itinerary for Leh – Ladakh tour ex. Delhi (without any buffer days) covering all major tourist destinations of Leh – Ladakh and followed widely by many travelers including me . We will be analyzing or finding the budget or costing for this Leh – Ladakh tour as a part of our exercise… You can roughly guess for yourself that for a similar trip or based on your point of interest, what will be the approximate cost or budget for your custom Leh – Ladakh trip. An example itinerary for Leh – Ladakh covering almost all basic tourist places –

Day 1 | Delhi – Jammu/Patnitop
Day 2 | Jammu/Patnitop – Srinagar
Day 3 | Srinagar – Kargil
Day 4 | Kargil – Lamayuru – Leh
Day 5 | Leh Local Sightseeing + Inner Line Permits
Day 6 | Leh – Khardung La – Diskit (Nubra Valley) – Hunder – Diskit
Day 7 | Hunder/Diskit – Sumur – Panamik – Sumur – Khardung La – Leh
Day 8 | Leh – Hemis – Pangong Tso
Day 9 | Pangong Tso – Thicksey – Shey Palace – Leh
Day 10 | Leh Rest Day or Sham Valley Tour around Leh including Magnetic Hills, Gurudwara Pather Sahib, Alchi, Likir, Basgo, Confluence at Nimmu
Day 11 | Leh – Tso Moriri via Chumathang
Day 12 | Tso Moriri – Tso Kar – Moore Plains (Manali – Leh Highway) – Pang – Sarchu
Day 13 | Sarchu – Manali
Day 14 | Manali – Delhi

So, you can see for our sample Leh – Ladakh itinerary we have taken 14 days (without any buffer days). You can add/remove modify it according to your needs and of course the budget outcome will depend a bit on that but I guess that is very much trivial to say . Also, consider that while traveling alone the cost of accommodation and transportation is bound to increase and while traveling in large evenly balanced groups it will surely decrease. As of now, I will also assume that you guys are two in number so that budget can be calculated on twin sharing basis. Now, to analyze the budget on the above or any other itinerary, we can categorize the budget in two major parts described below –

Food + Accommodation + Miscellaneous

If you are living in an average budget hotel with decent comfort and are traveling in a group (at least 2 in number) then the average cost per day for food, accommodation and other misc. things like toll, permit fees, entry fees to monasteries etc. comes about Rs 500-700 per day. This trip will need about 14 days at the very least, so roughly you will be spending some Rs 7000 – 10000 per person for food, accommodation and other misc. expenditures. Again, 500-700 figure could be low budget for someone and little high for the others depending upon choice of stay and food or other activities you plan to do. Example, if you dine at a dhabha tent then the cost of meal would come out to be around Rs 50-70 only per person and the same meal if you take at a restaurant at Changspa road in Leh then you might pay Rs 150 – Rs 170 per person or may be more or furthermore in some high end restaurant the cost will go up much more… Vegetarian or Non-Vegetarian also matters with respect to food pricing, so take that too into account. Same thing applies for the miscellaneous activities and here I have considered only which are unavoidable such as toll, permit charges, entry fees, snacks etc. If you are going for paragliding, rafting, shopping etc. then that will surely be something additional for you.

Hence, if you are going with the budget hotel having decent comfort, taking decent quality food and including only mandatory miscellaneous charges then you may need to shell out Rs 7000 – 10000 per person for the above Leh – Ladakh itinerary of 14 days.

Mode of Transportation

On a trip to Leh – Ladakh, the major cost comes out to be for taxis or transportation or fuel depending upon your mode of transport. Using public transport inside Leh – Ladakh is a challenge as frequency of such vehicles are very poor and based on their schedules you may require 18-20 days to complete the above trip … So, in Leh – Ladakh, travellers mostly commute either by private hired taxis or shared taxis run by tour operators or by finding travels partners and sharing the cost with them or riding rented bikes or ultimately self-drive on their personal bikes or cars. All these options will present you different costing of the trip. Let’s look each one of them below to get an idea of the total cost for a Leh – Ladakh trip.

Self-Drive Private Vehicle

You will be traveling about 3300-3600 KMs for above Ladakh trip. So, if your bike gives mileage of about 30 KMPL on an average in hills + plains then you are looking for about Rs 8000 – 9000 for fuel roughly. Similarly, you can calculate if you are driving the car. Just keep in mind that in hills your car will give much lesser mileage than in plains. So, calculate accordingly and divide them among the people traveling in car to calculate per person cost. It is difficult to travel to Ladakh with a pillion on a bike, so cost is calculated singularly above.

Finally, taking food + accommodation into account, traveling to Ladakh by self-drive mode of transport, you are looking at about ((Rs 8000 – 9000) + (Rs 7000 – 10000) = (Rs 15000 – 19000)) as the total cost for the entire trip.

Self-Drive But Rented Vehicle

Here, cost of fuel would be same as for a self-drive private vehicle calculated above but you will be adding the cost of bike/car rent as well. Usually, you get a decent bike in good condition at around Rs 1000 – 1300 per day depending on the make and model of the bike you rent. So, the cost of rent only comes out to be around Rs 13000 – 17000 considering if you get some discount. Adding the fuel cost as calculated above, the cost here becomes approximately about Rs 21000 – 26000.

Finally, taking food + accommodation into account, traveling to Ladakh by self-drive rented bike mode of transport, you are looking at about ((Rs 21000 – 26000) + (Rs 7000 – 10000) = (Rs 28000 – 36000)) as the total cost for the entire trip. If you are interested to know more details or tips on how to hire the bikes in Manali / Leh, kindly check the link here.

Privately Hired Taxi in Leh

The taxis outside the Leh are not allowed to roam in Leh – Ladakh and you are always required to hire taxi that belongs to Leh only. So, I am considering the case when you will be hiring the private taxi in Leh only and to reach Leh you will be using public transport. It may be the case that you are coming in privately hired taxi from outside Leh or may be flying directly to Leh etc. but here I will assume that you have used public transport such as train to reach Jammu, JKSRTC buses to reach Srinagar and then to Leh, HPTDC buses to reach Manali from Leh and further to Delhi. Also, I will assume that on Day 12 you will be going to Leh from Tso Moriri since in public transport you cannot travel directly from Tso Moriri to Manali. This means one extra day being spent in Leh – Ladakh making it 15 day trip. I am again assuming you are 2 in number… I will break down the private taxi cost and other transport cost for the entire trip as below –

Day 1 – Day 4 (Leh – Jammu – Srinagar – Kargil – Leh) = Rs 2000 – 2500 per person
Day 5 (Leh Local) = Rs 1500 / 2 = Rs 750 per person
Day 6 – Day 7 (Leh – Khardung La – Nubra Valley – Leh) = Rs 6931 / 2 = Rs 3465 per person
Day 8 – Day 9 (Leh – Pangong Tso – Leh) = Rs 6757 / 2 = Rs 3378 per peson
Day 10 (Sham Valley) = (Rs 2000 – 2500) / 2 = Rs 1000 – 1250 per person
Day 11 – Day 12 (Leh – Tso Moriri – Tso Kar – Leh) = Rs 9369 / 2 = Rs 4685 per person
Day 13 – Day 15 (Leh – Keylong – Manali – Delhi) = Rs 3200 per person

Considering about 10-12% discount on the rates of Leh Taxi Union after bargaining, total cost comes out approximately to be Rs 16500 – 17500 per person when traveling two in number. This cost per person will come down if there are more people traveling with you to a maximum of 6. Why 6? Because one Scorpio taxi can accommodate 6 persons with ease , anything more than that you need to hire two taxis.

Finally, taking food + accommodation into account, traveling by privately hired taxi in Leh and reaching Leh in public/shared transport, you are looking at about ((Rs 16500 – 17500) + (Rs 7000 – 10000) = (Rs 23500 – 27500)) as the total cost for the entire trip including 1 day added to travel between Tso Moriri – Leh.

If by any chance you plan to hire a private taxi to Travel on Srinagar – Leh Highway and Manali – Leh Highway then the cost will go much more higher because charges for Srinagar – Leh and Manali – Leh in a private taxi are about Rs 10500 and Rs 17000 – 18000 respectively. If you are less in number, like 2 in this example, it is always suggested to travel in public transport such as shared taxi, JKSRTC buses, HPTDC buses on Srinagar – Leh and Manali – Leh Highways

Shared Taxis or Public Transport or Travel Partners (in group)

Assuming that if, instead of hiring private taxi in Leh – Ladakh you plan to travel by shared taxis run by tour operators or join with other travel partners to share the cost or you yourself are about 6 in number then you are looking at about Rs 10000 – 11000 approximately. If you further plan to travel only by public buses then this figure as well will go down further considerably. However, at the same time you may be required to stay for longer period adjusting to the schedule of these public buses which means increase in lodging + food cost.

Finally, taking food + accommodation into account, traveling shared taxis (or public transport or along with travel partners) in Leh and reaching Leh in public/shared transport, you are looking at about ((Rs 10000 – 11000) + (Rs 7000 – 10000) = (Rs 17000 – 21000)) as the total cost for the entire trip.

Conclusion

If I look at above scenarios or example the of course, it may not be the case every time that you will be hiring the bike from Delhi only. There can be cases where you will travel to Leh – Ladakh by bus or public transport and then hire the bike in Leh to ride other places. Similarly, you may travel to Manali in public transport and then hire bike from Manali etc. There could be similar other cases as well like flying directly to Leh etc. I have tried to cover many general cases here and we can surely discuss custom cases in the comments section below, if you like. Otherwise, if you are looking them at individually and day by day then you will be able to calculate the cost estimate for any such custom combination with fair ease …

I will look forward for your queries or doubts in the comments section below and to know your perspective/tips of cost analysis for Ladakh trip as well. Kindly share your valuable thoughts/feedback/inputs etc here with many other fellow travelers.

Everyone loves going via Manali – Leh Highway and why not, it offers you the most mesmerizing views, least time to reach Leh by road and extreme adventure. But, once the season gets over that is by late September and October one should definitely think twice before venturing the journey on Manali – Leh Highway as it could be risky and leave you stranded in the middle of nowhere. Below I enlist my thoughts or risks which you must consider before starting any journey on Manali – Leh Highway in late September or October –

Firstly, by late September winter season starts to set in Trans Himalayas and all high passes in Himalayas starts receiving snowfall at frequent intervals. The chances of road closure due to the same starts increasing. Although the BRO tries to maintain the Manali – Leh road open by end of October but you can surely get stuck or delayed for a day or two or may be more due snowfall. So, it depends upon weather altogether and if lucky you may get through without any single blockage. The point is there is risk of 2-3 days delay which must be kept in mind before planning any journey to Manali – Leh Highway in late September or early October.

Secondly, the tented accommodation options or food joints and dhabhas starts to pack up from late September onwards at places like Sarchu, Pang, Bhartapur City etc. This leaves you with lmited choice on bargaining as well as options of stay. These places may require you to stop in case there is snow on some adjoining mountain passes or other reasons of road closure. The point is risk of running out of the limited accommodation options in case you get stuck at some unplanned place.

Thirdly, the HPTDC Manali – Leh Luxury Bus Service also stops plying after first week of September. And if you are looking for public transport then shared taxis comes the other option which does the cannon ball run from Manali to Leh in one day. At any day I will avoid going in a shared taxi which does cannon ball run of about 16-18 Hrs from Manali to Leh. HRTC does run the buses till the roads are open as suggested by Vistet here but again although they are definite options of travel but not as comfortable as HPTDC buses.

Fourthly, October (generally first week) is when Raid De Himalaya rally is carried out at Manali – Leh Highway due to which you may find various road sections to be closed for their smooth run. Moreover, finding an accommodation also becomes a huge challenge as most of the hotels/stay options are pre-booked for participants. This further means trouble and delays.

Finally, you will need to bear some really cold conditions and at night almost sub-zero temperatures as almost 250+ KMs (beyond Darcha) section of Manali – Leh Highway runs above 4000 Mtrs in altitude. In day time the it could be warmer than expected though.

Having said that in late September and being close to end of season, you will find least crowd, best roads and best bargains on taxis/hotels (of course except Raid De Himalayas time)

Conclusion

In Late September or first week of October, if you do have 2-3 days of buffer time and you are OK with some definite cold conditions especially at nights then only consider going via Manali – Leh Highway. It is STRONGLY suggested NOT TO attempt any travel on Manali – Leh Highway after second week of October or be ready to either get stuck for much longer time or sell/leave your vehicle then and there itself and bear a huge loss.

I would like to update: The Safe Date thing as stated by Vistet here –:

“Weather changes both gradually and suddenly and September can mean real problems as well . In 2009 the road was out two or three times before mid -September, and mid-September 2008 meant among other things eight people killed in an avalanche on the road. More examples could be mentioned. The practical approach : keep track of updates on the road conditions, always plan at least a buffer day before mid-September , and two later in the season”

I hope you will take into consideration the above five points rather risks before planning your journey on Manali – Leh Highway in late September or early October. Looking forward for your inputs as well and especially from the ones who have travelled in late September or October to get get an account of their experience.

There are quite a number of accommodation options available in Leh to suit every budget. One of the good economic options for stay in Leh is Shanti Guest House, just stones throw from Shanti Stupa and Changspa road. I had an opportunity to stay there in my Ladakh journey and here is the review for the same-

Shanti Guest House, Leh, Ladakh

Here is the complete review of Shanti Guest House, Leh – Ladakh —

Pictures:

Strange but true that due to some unavoidable circumstances (Leh -Ladakh flash floods), we didn’t click a single picture during our two day stay at Shanti Guest House …

Bookings:

Booking can be done by calling at one of these numbers

+91-1982-253084 or +91-1982-250023

Mobile: +91-9419178760, +91-9419888833, +91-9906982118

You can also check the web site at: Shanti Tours and Travel

The hotel almost runs full throughout the season so its always better to either book in advance or atleast ask them to keep the rooms for you

Price:

We got a room with four beds i.e. two double beds at a price of Rs 800 per day. The single double bed rooms were available for 300-500 per day. Of course, on the quoted prices overtelephone you always have the option to bargain and generally the pricing is in the range mentioned above. It is one of the economic and decent option of stay which is nearby Changspa road and Shanti Stupa. Main market is about 2 KM walk from the hotel.

Location:

It is situated right on the Shanti Stupa road just ahead of Shanti Stupa. If you are coming from Changspa road towards Shanti Stupa, then you need to take a right from T-section to reach the hotel. If you are coming from Airport towards Shanti Stupa then continue straight ahead of Shanti Stupa untill you see the Shanit Guest House towards your left side.

Parking:

There is no room for parking inside the hotel. You will need to park your car on the road outside the hotel.

Phone Facility:

Phone facility along with STD is also available at the Hotel.

ATM:

ATMs are located in main market of Leh town and near Leh taxi stand, which are at a walkable distance of about 2-3 KMs.

Petrol Pump:

Fuel is available at Petrol pump in Leh town.

Medical Assistance:

You need to approach local Leh hospital for any medical assistance.

Personal Experience:

Rooms in the hotel were on the average side but if the price is taken into account then I shall say it was a very good deal. The rooms were basic and the cleanliness was up to the mark in the rooms. There was no TV in the room ( but there was one TV in dining room), atleast the one which we took. The bathroom in our room was not so clean as the rains have caused the mud to get onto the floor from the window. However, we were disappointed that it never got cleaned during our stay of two days. So, it was a bit turn-off. However, the situation was a but different at that time because of havoc caused by the floods.

There was a dinning room with ladakhi style sitting to experience the culture and a lawn as well in the hotel where you can have your meal. We didn’t take any meal there owing to the fact that Changspa road was in the vicinity which offers wide varities of cuisines. But, we tried Maggie at the hotel which was nice. The two ladies taking care of the hotel at that time, prepared the food.

There was a little garden at the back where you can relax your nerves if you like. The terrace of the Hotel also offered some really nice views of Shanti Stupa and the other side of it too.

Overall it was a pretty good stay and the price tag makes it complete VFM (value for money) stay option.

Attraction In-Around Hotel:

One can visit Shanti stupa, Changspa Road, Leh Main Market, Leh Palace etc from the hotel.

Conclusion:

If you are looking for the economic and decent option of stay and find yourself comfortable with basic/homes stay type accommodation then this hotel may certainly suit your style. Not recommended, if you are looking for greater comfort and luxury stay with price being not the factor for you.

Leh is the major town of Ladakh region and offers wide variety of accommodation options. Leh offers plenty of places to stay which suits wide form of pockets. Right from the economic to expensive and luxurious, Leh has it all. We landed up at Leh in the middle of peak tourist season and unfortunately most of hotels were closed for us. After a lot of on the spot search, we finally got success to find an accommodation for us. It was Hotel Chubi and we were offered just 2 days of accommodation because after that Hotel Chubi or Hotel Chube was also booked completely for weeks to come … Read below for the complete review –

Pictures:

First and foremost, as my trademark saying goes pictures are better than thousand words. Take a look at the pictures of Hotel Chubi below -

Double bedded rooms at Hotel Chubi

Bookings:

Booking can be done by calling Mr. S. Rigzin Chubi at one of these numbers

+91-9419242514

+91-1982-253456

Try to mail them at: chube_leh@rediffmail.com or rigzin_chube@yahoomail.com

Price:

We got double bedded rooms (2 in number) at the price of Rs 800 per day. I guess the charges were too much as compared to the conditions of the room but we had no choice rather to take them. It was the costliest stay for us and perhaps the last when it came to room conditions.

Location:

Hotel Chubi or Chube is located very near to the Changspa road. You need to take a right turn from Changspa road T-section and at the end of the road take a left turn. You will find this Hotel on the left side in that lane. We walked quite a few times between Hotel Chubi and Changspa road, so its not very far from it.

Parking:

There was a no parking space available in the hotel. You will need to park the car outside the hotel just aside road. There was an empty land as well very near to hotel and I guess can be used for parking as well.

Phone Facility:

Phone facility along with STD is also available at the Hotel, the market and the Changspa road as well. The mobile connectivity was there for both Airtel and BSNL.

ATM:

There are I guess three ATMs in Leh town and are not too far away from the Hotel Chubi. Two of them are near Taxi stand and one in the main market.

Petrol Pump:

To get the fuel, you need to go to the Petrol Pump in Leh town.

Medical Assistance:

For any medical assistance you will have to Leh town hospital, not too far away.

Personal Experience:

Rooms in the hotel provided average level of comfort. There was a dampness in the room and the low light made it even more damp. The rooms were not so cozy but they were quite clean. The attached bathrooms having hot water supply were also clean. There was no TV in the room … A small garden was there in the hotel which had some lovely flowers as you say in the pictures too. I guess the dampness and low light was a big turnoff in terms of room.

Quality of food in the restaurant was really nice and the taste of tea /coffee was also good. We had the breakfast there which was quite good. Hospitality we received from the Uncle and Aunty was good too and they were quite friendly to talk to.

Attraction In-Around Hotel:

Leh Main Market, Leh Palace, Changspa Road and Shanti Stupa are the not too far away from the Hotel Chubi.

Personal Travelogues:

Day 5 – Part 1 – Dream of Ladakh Comes True

Day 5 – Part 2 – Entrance to Heaven, Nubra Valley

Conclusion:

In the end, I can say that it was an AVERAGE experience for us at the Hotel Chubi when we consider the price. You can try it if you cannot not find booking at any other hotel or at similar price. Personally, I didn’t like the rooms due to dampness but the food served in the restaurant tasted great and the garden in the hotel complex is lovely to refresh the fatigue of the days journey.

Please let me know in case you need some details. If you have ever stayed at Hotel Chubi / Chube, kindly spare two minutes to share your experience with others too, as comments. Your inputs could be valuable inputs for the person searching for some option of stay.
