Snow clearance operations begins on Srinagar – Leh Highway for the season 2015 finally after much spell of snow in March. Sonamarg road is expected to be open by March end and BRO is targetting to open Srinagar – Leh Highway by mid of April, thought weather will have the last say in it.

‘Sonamarg road will be thrown open by March end’ Srinagar, Mar 19 2015: The snow clearance operation on the strategic 434- km-long Srinagar-Leh highway, the only road link connecting Ladakh with rest of Jammu and Kashmir, was started on Thursday.
he highway was closed in December last year following heavy snowfall.
Border Roads Organization (BRO) officials said the snow clearance operation from Drass to treacherous Zojilla Pass started today.
Officials said the snow clearance operation will be completed by mid April next month after which the road will be thrown open for traffic.
Zojilla Pass on the highway which experiences heavy snowfall and remains shut for several months during winter is considered to be the most difficult and avalanche prone terrain.
Braving the bone-chilling cold, the laborers of BRO pressed the dozers and snow-cutters into service to clear the highway Zojilla pass. “The snow clearance work has been started and will be completed by mid April next month subject to good weather,” Chief Engineer Beacon, Brig A K Das told Rising Kashmir. He said the toughest work for snow clearance remains on the 30-km road stretch up to zero point of Zojilla from Sonamarg.
He said the highway will be thrown open for vehicular traffic after April 15.
Officials added that Project Beacon of the Border Roads Organization is responsible for clearing the road up to zero point near Zojilla from Sonamarg, while the Vijayak of the BRO clears the road from Drass side.
Commander 32 BRTF, Col Murlidharan said the road runs on mountains with deep gorge on one side. The men and machinery have to take extra precautions to avoid loss of life and property while working on the road. He said they have started the snow clearance work from Gagengar, adding that the road clearance work up to Sonamarg will be completed by end of March after which the road is likely to be thrown open for vehicular traffic.

Snow Clearance up to Sonamarg has been completed but road is not yet open officially due to safety reasons. The road is at present i open up to Gagengar which is 8 KMs before Sonamarg. After the survey by BRO considering the stability of road/snow slides, decision will be taken to officially open the road for tourists.

I highly doubt that Srinagar – Leh road will open that early. Even if it opens, it will not be stabilized.

There is an awesomely amazing news for the adventure junkies of Leh – Ladakh road trip that BRO has done a commendable job and if weather holds up for next few days, Srinagar – Leh Highway will open by end of April 2015 that is last week of April 2015, Srinagar – Leh Highway is all expected to be open as the snow clearance operations has been completed up to Gumri and road has been opened for one way traffic up to Kargil :D :D

In the initial days, the highway will be unstable to an extent so avalanches and landslides are common but by couple of weeks Srinagar – Leh Road should be good to travel as the road condition stabilize.

Hats off to the BRO for this commendable job !!

    Read More Below:

Kargil, Apr 18: Srinagar Ladakh National Highway will reopen for traffic in the last week of April.
Chief Engineer Vijayak Mohan Lal visited Zero Point Gumri, the meeting point from both sides, and declared that the road from Kargil side has been cleared for one way traffic.
Talking to Greater Kashmir, Mohan Lal said that within next four days Project Beacon will also complete the work and the road will opened for vehicular traffic from April 25 subject to weather condition.
The snow clearance work on the strategically important Highway is going on both sides, by Project Vijayak from Kargil side and Project Beacon from Srinagar side.
He said that BRO invested Rs 30-40 Lakh for clearing snow from the 40 Km patch from Drass to Gumri Zero Point.
He congratulated the team of Vijayak for the achievement which comprises mostly of local youth from Drass.
Lal directed the team to start widening the road for double traffic and hoped that in a few days expected avalanches on key points will occur which will ease the movement later.
Lal told that the Bbridge at Matayen Nallah has been installed and operated as this year.
Ladakh is cut off from rest of world for five months of winter and people in the province are eagerly waiting for the opening of the road as there is shortage of many essential commodities.

    Please chek this link http://indianexpress.com/article/india/india-others/ngt-bans-diesel-tourist-vehicles-to-rohtang-pass/

So could you please check how is it going to affect tourists?
We are planning to take Nissan terrano and the route is Srinagar-Leh.

    Hi Nidhi

The order has indeed been passed. Pursuant to the NGT Order, the State Govt. will issue a notification and we will have to see its contents.

After May 1, we will know on-the ground situation. If it is enforced, you will not be able to use your diesel vehicle [No problem if it is a petrol vehicle]. Also the way it is worded, it looks like it is from Manali onwards towards Rohtang – so coming down the other way should not be a problem.

But, as I said, we’ll only have to wait and see

    Vinod
