Permits for Manali – Rohtang Pass Road
The Rohtang Pass Permit for Manali to Leh, Keylong (Lahaul) and Kaza (Spiti) is now being issued at an official camp setup at Gulaba ahead of Kothi, from green tax barrier at Chauri-Bihal and Shuru, SDM Office Manali, Tourist information center Manali and in the office of HPTDC. This year the congestion charges of Rs. 50/- per light vehicle has to be paid which includes both Motor Bike and Cars and Rs 100/- per heavy vehicle. The traffic is allowed from 4 AM in the morning to 11 PM at night, after which traffic will not be allowed. Hence, it is suggested to start at 3 AM from Manali to avoid long traffic jams, especially in June, to Rohtang Pass. For Manali to Rohtang Pass, only 400 tourists vehicles/taxis (HP Registered) are allowed in the batches per day beyond Gulaba to snow point of Marhi or Rohtang Pass.

Bikers also need these permits or pay these congestion charges.

If you are coming from Keylong side or Kaza side, then you do not need any permit to ply on Manali – Rohtang Pass road even if you have a non-HP registered vehicle. Permit is required only if you are going from Manali side towards Rohtang Pass.

Timings of Manali – Rohtang Pass Road
Traffic on Manali – Rohtang Pass Road has been regulated with timings and traffic will be allowed from 4 AM to 11 PM officially across Rohtang Pass. Tourists vehicles (only HP registered) will only be allowed in 2 batches of 200 each from Kothi. 1st batch can leave from 5 AM to 7 AM and must report back at Kothi at 12 PM. The second batch from 1 PM to 3 PM and must report back by 6-7 PM.

Current Manali – Leh Road Status: 5th March 2015
Due to the presence of very heavy snow this year, highest in last 36 years, snow clearance operations over Manali – Leh has been delayed and will start from second or third week of March. So, expect a delayed opening of Manali – Leh Highway this year.

BRO begins snow clearance operations on Manali – Leh Highway, expects it to open in June. It is a late start this year and still conditions will depend on weather in time to come.

Mandi, March 19 2015: The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) launched a snow-clearing operation on the Manali-Leh highway today.
Col KP Rajendra Kumar, Commander, 38 Border Road Task Force (BRTF), Manali, said they would restore the 222-km stretch up to Sarchu by May, while the remaining stretch would be opened for the vehicular traffic by June.
He said they had already cleared snow on a 21-km stretch. Today, they started the operation from Gulaba after performing a yajana. They would now clear snow from a 30-km stretch up to Rohtang Pass (13,050 ft), the gateway to Lahaul-Spiti valleys.
On the first day, the BRO encountered around seven feet snow. Some patches on the highway were covered under more than 30 feet of snow. Around 100 BRO personnel were engaged in the operation, sources said.
The Commander said dozens of dozers, snow cutters and excavators had been pressed into service on both sides of the road to make it motorable. The work to clear snow usually starts in the first week of March. But this time, the restoration of the highway, which is of strategic importance from the defence point of view, was delayed due to prolonged unfavourable weather conditions.
The Lahaul valley remains cut off from the rest of the country for several months every year after snow blocks the 479-km Manali-Leh highway.

No chance for Manali – Leh Highway. However, for Srinagar – Leh, I have heard that BRO is toiling hard to open it by end of April

Manali to Rahla Fall road has been cleared of snow (about 31 KMs) but snow clearance operations have been hampered due to recent snowfall. On the North side of Rohtang Pass in Lahaul Valley, the road to Sissu from Keylong is expected to open in next 4-5 days. Keylong to Udaipur road has been opened. Still it is expected that Manali – Leh road will open by mid of May.

Inclement weather hampered the operation undertaken by the Border Roads Organization (BRO) on clearing the Manali-Leh highway that goes through’ the Rohtang Pass with the area receiving fresh snowfall during the past few days. The BRO, which started its road clearance work from Gulaba ahead toward the 13,050 foot high pass on March 19, cleared a 31 km stretch from Manali to Rahlafall but bad weather slowed down the progress once again.

Speaking to this reporter, Col KP Rajendra of the BRO said: “Due to bad weather work on clearing the road was hampered because of fresh snowfall occurring in the region, which blocked the road. A snow avalanche occurred near Rahlafall, where the BRO team is struggling to clear the road. However, work is expected to be completed within one or two days.”

The BRO team is also engaged in road clearance work from Lahaul side to open the road for vehicular activities, which is moving toward Sisu. “The road will be cleared up to Sisu in the next four or five days,” said BRO commander KP Rajendra.

The prolonged winter season has added to the woes of residents of Lahaul-Spiti district, most of whom have been trapped in their homes for more than a month as all interlinking roads in the area are blocked due to the heavy snowfall in the region.

After strenuous efforts by the BRO a 52 km stretch of the Keylong-Udaipur road opened for vehicular traffic in the district, while people of Tindi, Mayar and Sisu valley still detached from the road facility, which will have to wait for a few more days to avail of the facility.

Every year the BRO starts its road clearance work on the Manali-Leh highway via the Rohtang Pass at the beginning of March but this year the prolonged bad weather delayed the start of the operation.

Every winter the Rohtang Pass is closed to vehicular traffic for six months. The region received heavy snowfall during the past few months and chopper services provided by the state government remain the main source of transportation for residents to go to other areas of the state in emergency situations.

BRO officials hope to clear the road by the middle of May. However, if the weather remains hostile it may delay progress on the work.

Road up to Marhi has been cleared, BRO expect to cross Rani Nalla in coming two-three days if weather holds up. There are about 50 feet snow walls this time at Rani Nalla. Still, timings of Rohtang Pass opening isn;t much clear and once Rani Nalla is crossed, BRO said they will predict the time of opening of Rohtang Pass. In May, Rohtang Pass is expected to open and then work on Baralacha La pass will commence. So, we should expect opening of Manali – Leh Highway only around first week of June type at least as per current updates :( :(

    Read More Below:

MANALI: With Indian Army in Ladakh currently depending on air supply for their stocks, Border Roads Organization (BRO) has sped up its efforts to restore traffic on Manali-Leh Road.

BRO jawans are braving extreme weather and working over time to get the road functional again. They have cleared the road at some of the most dangerous spots including Chumbak Mor, Rahla Fall, Chodah Mor and Beas Nullah. The team, which is working according to its target, has moved beyond Marhi – 33km from Manali. Now, the main challenge before BRO is to cut the snow at Rahni Nullah where avalanches have covered highway beneath 30 to 50 feet snow.

“We are expecting to reach Rahni Nullah in two days. Only after crossing the stretch, we will be in a position to tell an estimated time to open Rohtang Pass,” said 38 Task Force commander Colonel KP Rajendra Kumar.

He added that Rohtang will be opened for traffic in May and after then they will concentrate to open Baralacha Pass to connect the road till Sarchu – border of Himachal and Ladakh.

    Hello –

We group of 7 people are coming to Manali on 17th May 2015 from Delhi by Bus and planning to go to Leh-Ladakh by Road by Hiring some private taxi. And expected to return back to Delhi by May 23rd/24th. I heard from many blogs/sites that BRO is struggling for the Manali-Leh road snow clearing and it may get delayed and probably open by June.

    1. Can anyone please give me the current update of the road status as of now..?

    2. Actually 6 of the people are coming from Kerala and they already booked their round-trip flights tickets 6 months ago and coming to Delhi on May 15th. We actually confirm with Himalayan tourism information center and they only advice us to plan for the trip after Mid May and that’s how we plan and booked the tickets long time ago.
If we are still unlucky that road is still closed by that time, Is there any other way/route to go leh from Manali..?

    3. If there is no other route to Leh from Manali, then how about changing our plan a bit and going to Srinagar from Manali…?If then please advice us the route and feasible options..?

Please suggest/give some information as we need to push our limits within our limited dates.

    Thanks,
    Rimmy
