In the continuous efforts of DoW to promote Responsible Travel in Himalayas and materialize our vision of helping Himalayan lives directly, the DoW executed a successful event of our community initiative DoW Causes at a small, remote and yet beautiful hamlet/vilage of Ladakh: Khaldo, Hanle.

A lot has already been said, shared over DoW Blog, DoW Community, Social Media, etc.. regarding this mighty initative DoW Causes | A Step Towards Responsible Travel but everything was on paper and it was time for DoW Community to deliver. We not only delivered this change rather we did this historic event in style :)

In September 2013 at DoW Mega Meet at a remote village named Hanle, we executed couple of these causes for the first time after its launch and I am highly thankful to each one of you viz. Sourabh, Jiwesh, Pradip, Mainak, Sahil, Nabeel, Shakti, Saurabh, Paritosh, Tapan for contibuting towards DoW – Cause 1 | GYAAN 500 and scripting this success story for each one of us. The enthusiasm shown by each one of you was really an emotion to applaud and it almost brought tears of joy seeing those children along with all of you spreading smiles across the miles and over 14000 Feet :D

While we contributed towards GYAAN 500, Shekhar was the one who contributed towards DoW – Cause 2 | CURE 500 by distributing medicines at an event held in local dispensary of the village.

I am sure each one of you who contributed to the cause on DoW Mega Meet has something or the other to bring back home apart from tavel experience. I am sure that the smiles on the little cute faces of children your were responsible for that day will be embed in your memories for a long time to come and you always will be supporting the DoW Causes each time you travel to Himalayas or anywhere else on your own. Please do help in spreading them to your loved ones and friends so that we all can contribute in more volumes and spread thoses smiles in remote villages high above in Himalayas…

Reading it, if you also like to participate and contribute towards DoW Causes when visiting Hanle, please get in touch with Mr Sonam who works at Hanle observatory and has agreed to help each one of us in getting connected to right people in the village. He is extremely down to earth and helpful person. He runs a small or the only guest house of the village by the name Padma Guest House. He knows about these causes very well and you can refer either my name or DoW and he will be ready to help you in contributing towards DoW Causes anyways you will prefer. He or his wife can help you get in tuch with school or dispensary adminstration over there at Hanle. Here are his contact details:

    Contact Person: Mr. Sonam Dorjay
Attributes: Down to earth local ready to support & help other locals of the village
    Contact Number: 08991922029, 09469224392
    Location: Hanle, Khaldo

Even if he is not reachable or unavailable, you can yourself visit the local school and talk to headmaster over there to do the necessary arrangement in order to distribute the stationary. Similarly, you can visit the local dispensary and look out for head nurse to distribute the medicines there.

Even if the school is closed, they can call up all the children at school as it is a small village only.

    Enjoy the pictures for now….

Please DO NOT hand over the stationary to head master or any single person, rather distribute to children in the school only to actually experience that part of Responsible Travel and joy of spreading smiles across.

This was indeed a great initiative. While approaching Kargil, we stopped at a co-ed school at PanDrass and distributed the stationery. The teachers too participated and we distributed the candies that we were carrying too. Some of the poorer of the children were identified by the teachers and we added some additional stuff for them. We also distributed medicines at the village where we stopped to have a puncture repaired. Feels good to share…

    Hi Dheeraj,

We would be travelling to Leh on 7th July and will be in Hanle 12th/13th July.
Kindly let us know if you know if most of the requirement of stationaries are still open in Govt School at Hanle or its closed?
Also, we would like to purchase these stationaries at Leh. Can you please guide if you know any shop in Leh where we get ?

    Regards
    Manohar

Manohar, welcome to DoW Community and thanks for coming forward to help the locals and spread the smiles up there in Hanle. You can always contribute up there and even if school is not open, the teachers will ask the children to come over in school and gather there. You can go prepared with some small kits having all together to help you distribute them at ease.

You can buy the stuff in Leh main market, there are few shops there. One I saw few 100 Mtrs from DC Office in Leh too.
