  1. hi again, i had planned my leh trip with your trip. This time me n my friend wish to go to manali, kasol, dharamshala, mcloedganj . starting from Bombay. Pls suggest the path . how many days not decided. but we would like to backpack.

    • Hi RK,

Well, you will need about 8-10 days to make a backpacking trip to these places unless you just want sleep on one place and move to other.

To suggest any plan, it is very important that I must know how many places you can afford to spare for the trip and accordingly I can suggest it.

  2. Dhaval RAwal on

    Dear Sir,

AM planning tour plan to Simla – 2 days, Kulla – 1 day, Manila – 2 days and Dalhousie – 2 days, We are 6 adults and 4 children ( children age from 10 to 13 year ) three families. Planning to execute tour on 15th May,17 from Ahemdabad. Would be glad if you can guide us with the route plan and the site / places to visit or we need to cut or add days for other nearby ares whcih are miss out by me.

    • Hello Dhaval, with family on board and especially Children, I will highly recommend that you make the trip only either to Manali + Dalhousie OR Manali + Shimla. Including all three will be quite hectic and you wil just be reaching one place and then start to again pack to go to next place.

  3. Hi Dheeraj,
Your blog is very informative and interesting.
We have planned to go to Amritsar during second week of march and return from jaipur during third week. We have 14 days. We are a couple with 2 kids aged 4 and 6. Please suggest us a itinerary that lets us experience snowy mountains. This is our first long vacation with kids.
    Thanks in advance.
    Cheers,
    Anitha

      • H Dheeraj,
        Thanks for your quick response.
Chamba Bir and Billing circuit looks more for adventure like paragliding and trekking. I think with kids we will not go for adventure. Can you please suggest an alternative that includes snow in it.
        regards,
        Anitha

  4. Hi Dheeraj,

I am planning a trip to Dharamshala by Zoomcar from Chandigarh around Jan 17th for 3 days.

    My only concern is –
    1. Will there be snowfall on the way that could lead to road blocks?

    2. What places around Dharamshala could be covered in 3 days?

    3. If not at Dharamshala where can we enjoy snow at?

    Thanks

    • Hi Bharath,

      1. Snowfall purely depends upon luck but the roads to Mcleod Ganj and Dharamshala remains open all round the year. In case there is snowfall, then well, it will be cleared for sure in a day or too.
      2. Just relax in Mcleod Ganj, go over for a snow trek towards Triund to the safest point possible and come back and ogle over the majestic views of Dhauladhars.
      3. You should be able to get snow in mid January around Mcleod Ganj

  5. Hi Dheeraj,

    Hi Friends,
I am planning a trip to McLeod Ganj in the month-end of July’16. Can you please help me with the best and the shortest route to reach McLeod Ganj from Kolkata. Also, is July end a good time? Need two days budget trip itinerary including Truind Trek with the recommended hotels and the average cost of the whole trip.
    Appreciate your suggestions.
    Thanking you in advance

    • You can reach Pathankot by train and then go over to Mcleod ganj. July end will be rains so will not say it is a good time but if you do not have a choice then its OK. in just two days, it is fine just to hang around in Mcleod Ganj and in case it is raining better take caution on the trek to triund as it will be slippery

  17. Hi Dheeraj,
Thanks a lot for such an informative article. I am planning a trip in first week of Jan, 15 with my wife. It will be our first trip to north India. We will be reaching Amritsar (from Pune) in the morning on 2 Jan and we have a return train from Delhi in the evening on the 11 Jan.
We are planning to cover Amritsar->Dalhousie->Dharamshala->Palampur->Naggar->Manali->Delhi on this trip. It would be great if you help us in planning this trip. We have the following queries:
    1. Transport: Should we book a cab for entire trip from Amritsar to Manali? Then, will take a volvo from Manali to Delhi. Please let us know if there is any other economical as well as comfortable option.
    2. Accomodation: As it is off-season, we have not done any advance hotel bookings. We are planning to book on the spot for HPTDC hotels. Please suggest some hotels with excellent views and locations.
    3. Food: We love to explore local foods (only veg). It will be great if you share some good food joints with us.
    4. Shopping: As we don’t have good options of heavy woollen clothes in Pune. We are thinking to buy them from Amritsar before starting the Himachal tour. Is it a good choice or should we carry everything with us from Pune only?
So far, we have just done the train reservations from Pune to Amritsar and Delhi to Pune. So we have the flexibility to change the plan as per your suggestions. We are looking to visit more scenic and natural places rather than commercial places.

Thanks a lot for reading such a length comment. Looking forward for your valuable suggestions.

  18. I would like to go on Himachal tour in Mid January next year around 15. Would like to cover places like dalhousie, khajjar, dharamsala and mcleodganj. Our main aim is to see snowfall. Can you please confirm
    1) if we would be able to see snowfall during that time.
    2) if roads will be open to above places during that time.
    3) is there any other nearby places worth visiting.
    4) suggest a good itinerary for the above places for 3-4 days. We would be travelling from Delhi.

    • Hello Vivek,

      1. That is a decent time to visit that belt. Snow should be accessible but for snowfall you need luck. Try to keep a tap on weather conditions.
      2. Yes, roads should be open to these places barring if it snows heavily during that time only then Khajjiar might get block temporarily for a day or two.
      3. Try to focus on these places only and see if the route to Chamba is open or not. There will be plenty of snow near/around Chamba during that time.
      4. 3-4 days are a bit less to cover both these places, try and stick to just one or check : Snowfall Near Delhi | 7 Places to Visit in Himachal

      Regards
      dheeraj Sharma

      • Hi Vivek,

I am also planning backpacking trip on the same route from 15-18 Jan.
Let me know if we can patch on this trip.

        Regards, Sandeep 9819832138

  19. Hi Dheeraj:

It is a very nice blog you have here. I really appreciate all the efforts that you have taken to make this blog as informative and as helpful as possible.

I am looking forward to visit Himachal Pradesh in the latter half of December after Christmas. This is my first visit to Himachal Pradesh and I do not have much idea about it. Could you kindly suggest all the places that we could visit in December in Himachal Pradesh and also please advice if it is safe to visit in December. We are looking forward to lap up as much as possible, some snowfall, some shopping , some relaxing. We would like to include Tirthan valley , Pabbar valley, Shimla, Manali, Mcleodganj, Dharamshala, Kullu, Palampur ,Dalhousie . We are open to add or subtract any of these places. We are thinking to have 10days allotted for our trip and we would be travelling from Delhi.

    looking forward for your reply.

    • Hi again Dheeraj,

I have prepared a tentative itinerary. Please take a look at it and advice if it looks good.

      Please Note:

We are open to any suggestions and ideas given by you.
Please advice on the safe and economical places to stay and safe mode of transport to reach Dalhousie,Mcleodganj,Shimla and Manali. We are a group of ladies travelling, hence safety would be our top priority.
Kindly also advice if the number of days that I have alloted for each place is sufficient to travel without haste.
We would really like to see Kinnaur,Spiti valley, Thirthan valley, saharan, kalpa but since I read in one of your threads about freezing water pipes, I have decided to forgo it with a heavy heart but still have hopes that atleast 1 or 2 places might be visitable after Christmas, hence I have again mentioned it here

      The itinerary is as below:

Day1: Reach Dalhousie early morning [by travelling overnight from Delhi]. Stay overnight in Dalhousie.
Day2: leave to Mcleodganj from Dalhousie. Stay in Mcleodganj. Cover Mcleodganj on Day2 [undertake trekking] and Palampur and Dharamshala on Day3.
Day 4: Reach manali. Stay in Manali. We would like to explore manali, kullu, mandi, rohtang pass, solong pass along with other nearby places and also take up some adventure sports in Manali.
Day6: Reach Shimla. Stay in Shimla. Explore shimla, pabbar valley, kufri.
Day8: leave to Kalka from Shimla by Toy train.

      Looking forward for your reply.

      • Puja, that is a good attempt but has alot of days in traveling only. Like I said, I would advice you to stick to two circuits from Manali + Tirthan with Dharmashala + Dalhousie OR Manali + Tirthan with Shimla + Chindi – Karsog in 10 days time you have in hand. Let me know what interest you and we can work out the itinerary based on it.

    • Puja, all these cannot be done in 10 days. I would advice you to stick to two circuits from Manali + Tirthan with Dharmashala + Dalhousie OR Manali + Tirthan with Shimla + Chindi – Karsog.

      • Hi Dheeraj,
Thank you very much for the advice.
We would like to go with the first circuit that you have mentioned:
Manali + Tirthan with Dharmashala + Dalhousie but we would like to squeeze in Shimla too if possible.
Looking forward for your advice and guidance on this Dheeraj.
        Thanks
        Puja.

        • Puja, I will not advice to include Shimla here, you have just 10 days else you will be spending at least 4-5 days just in travel out of 10 days you have in hand. Are these 10 days you have from ex. Delhi? Means 10 days of trip to include all these places you are planning from Delhi, right?

  20. Please ignore the earlier itinerary. I have modified few things based on comments in your site.

Day-1 (13th Aug’14): Arrival at Pathankot and reach Dalhousie in taxi by 1100 hrs. Cover local sightseeing to the extent possible.
Visit Satdhara, Panjphulla, Jandhrighat Palace, Subhash Bowli, Bara Pathar, Subhash Chownk and the last but not least Old Churches of Dalhousie. Keep the tour of Mall Road, GPO Dalhousie for the evening.
Day-2 (14th Aug’14): Early morning start from Dalhousie for Chamba via Chamera lake. Then reach Khajjar via Jott Gette and overnight stay at Khajjar.
Day-3 (15th Aug’14): Early morning departure from Khajjar and reach Dalhousie. Kala Tope is on the way to Khajjiar. The 3-km route through dense pine forests from Lakkadmandi to Kala Tope is simply exhilarating. A visit to the Khajji Naga temple there.
Cover remaining local sightseeing in Dalhousie and overnight stay at Dalhousie.
Day-4 (16th Aug’14): After breakfast leave from Dalhousie and reach Dharamsala. Cover local sightseeing
Day-5 (17th Aug’14): Local sightseeing. Local monastery, Dal Lake, Bhagsunag Temple and waterfall. Start with Naddi Gaon and Dal Lake. Then go to Bhagsu Falls at a distance of 2 kms from Dharamshala in the afternoon. Autorickshaws are available from McLeodGanj. Also explore the Kangra Fort.
Visit Tsuglagkhang Complex, Temple Road in Mcleodganj 5 kms uphill from Dharamshala. Late evening return via bus.
    Night Stays:
    •13th Aug’14: Dalhousie
    •14th Aug’14: Khajjar
    •15th Aug’14: Dalhousie
    •16th Aug’14: Dharamsala

  21. Vivek Jain on

I am planning a trip to Himachal early October this week. I plan to visit places like Simla, Kullu Manali, Rohtang pass, Dalhousie, Dharamsala etc. Please suggest a good itinerary for me, I will be able to spend 11 days and 12 nights. Also let me know if there’s any good place worth visiting I may have missed out.

    • Vivek, you have good amount of time then why not visit much remote places and yet very scenic and beautiful and offbeat in Himachal like Kinnaur Valley and Spiti Valley?? OR you are particulary interested in normal tourist destinations as above.

      • Vivek Jain on

Dheeraj, I don’t have any issues in visiting remote places, in fact I would like that. Please suggest a good itinerary for me covering Kinnaur Valley, Spiti Valley or any other scenic or beautiful place worth visiting.

        • Vivek Jain on

Thanks for this Dheeraj. Can you please suggest what will be the most convenient and economical mode of transport for the trip to Spiti Vally. Are there any public transport available or private cab is the only option.

        • Vivek, economic will be HRTC buses and convenient will be private taxi. There are HRTC buses that run between Manali – Kaza and then Reckong Peo – Kaza from Kinnaur side. In Spiti Valley, you will need to mostly rely upon private taxi for sightseeing.

        • Vivek Jain on

Dheeraj, Is the private taxis available from Manali or Simla for Spiti valley tour and what will be estimate rate for return journey as per your itinerary? I’ll be travelling with my wife.

  22. Dear Dheeraj,
I am travelling from Delhi to Manali for 5 days(14 July-18 July) along with 2 friends.Could you please suggest me an itenary for places to visit in and around Manali and the adventure sports that we can try in this season. Thanks a lot for all your help!

    • Edwin, most of the adventure sports including Rafting will be closed now. You can try Paragliding in Solang Valley if the weather permits. For 5 days you can check out:

Day 1 – Reach Manali, take rest for half of the day and enjoy the walks on Mall road. (I assume that you will be reaching in the morning by Volvo)
Day 2 – Manali Local sightseeing which includes Hadimba Temple, Manu Temple, Mall Road, Local Monastery, Vashisth Hot Water Springs (never found it interesting), Hike the woods around Old Manali, Jogni Falls, Bijli Mahadev near Kullu etc.
Day 3 – Manali – Snow Point or Marhi/Gulaba on the way to Rohtang Pass. Enjoy in snow and come back to Manali. On the way back you can visit Solang Valley and do paragliding there.
Day 4 – Manali – Naggar Castle(stay at Naggar and enjoy the place)
Day 5 – Naggar Castle – Manali – Delhi (Checkout from Naggar Castle by noon. Since, the Volvo will be around 5.30 PM types, so either you can spend a sometime hanging around Naggar only and after lunch leave for Manali or come back to Manali and hang around on Mall road and finally take the return bus)

  23. Hey Dheeraj,

I am planning to do a trip starting Amritsar-dharamshala- manali- spiti valley- chandigarh.

Or if there are any tips please be free to give your expert advice.
Also i would like to know more on Spiti valley. How to travel from manali including overnights.
And also are the buses safe?
I am doing it with a friend of mine. 2 adults.

    Thanks

    Tushar

    • Tushar, it is very much unlikely that roads from Manali to Kaza / Spiti Valley will be open during that time. I expect the road to Kunzum Pass will open around mid of June only.

  24. Hi deepak,
We are planning a 5 day family trip to himachal in May.I am looking for an itinerary that will suit my dad who is an active 75 and my niece who is 13 yrs old.we are not keen on very touristy spots but like to walk, relax and enjoy good food.
We are travelling from mumbai to delhi by train(rajdhani 20th or 21st may arriving early morning) and our return flight is from chandigarh(27th may morning).
I am interested in covering the following places tatapani/naldehra,trithan valley, naggar castle, manali(not the mall road/temple but maybe rohtang pass). Is there a itinerary that can cover these places.
I am happy to change the entire plan if you can suggest something better.
    thanks.
    sneha

    • Sneha, consider the family composition and number of days in hand, it is too much to ask from a trip to include that many places. You can try something like below which will the best bet for you:

Day 0 – Leave from Delhi by overnight Volvo for Manali. Get down at Aut/Bhunter near Kullu next morning (Day 2) where you can get to reach Tirthan Valley (about 40-45 KMs from there)
Day 1 – Tirthan Valley – Relaxing day besides Tirthan River
      — Stay at Raju Bharti Guest House (you will need booking well in advance, so finalize it ASAP) other you need to stay at some other property. Raju is a pioneer in that region, so will say do not miss the stay there as it is quite an experience in itself.
      Day 2 – Tirthan Valley
      — Enjoy the walks in the GHNP. There are two Waterfalls nearby Raju GH in the woods.
Day 3 – Tirthan Valley – Naggar Castle (about 50 KMs)
      — Stay at Naggar Castle and enjoy the place. Very romantic with great views and food. Visit Roerich Musueum, Art Gallery and do not miss the hike to ancient Krishna Temple at the top
      — It is one of the most romantic places in Himachal
Day 4 – Naggar Castle – Marhi/Gulaba Snow Points towards Rohtang Pass – Solang Valley – Manali
      – You can enjoy the first half of the day at snow point MArhi/Gulaba (whichever is accessible) and if interested may also visit Solang Valley snow point for other adventure activities
Day 5 | Manali – Delhi by overnight Volvo
      — Manali Local sightseeing including Manu Temple, Hadimba Temple, Local Monastery, Shopping at Mall road etc etc
      — Relax in Manali by evening and leave from Manali by overnight Volvo.

  25. Hi Dheeraj I am planning to visit Dalhousie in Januray . Can you please let me know about the Road condition from Pathankot to Dalhousie

    • Hello Gaurav,

As per the last reports, Roads are fine from Pathankot to Dalhousie, nothing major broken there. So, there shall not be any issues over the road journey to Dalhousie – Khajjiar 🙂

Find couple of more inputs on your other comment as well, shared by Tarun at the link here

  26. Hi Dheeraj
We plan to visit Himachal in the first week of November for about a week.
We are a family of 4 with 2 kids aged one and six.
    1. We plan to do places ex Chandigarh or Jalandhar.
2.Since travelling wd kids we do not want road travel to exceed more than 5 hours.
    3. Wish to stay at nice heritage properties for a relaxed holiday… Not too much itinerary driven.
    4. We would be hiring a SUV to move around.
5.Any home stay options would also be welcome.

    Thanks a ton
    Ravneet

  27. Shweta Das on

    Hi Dheeraj,
I have planned a 7 day tour of the Dhauladhar ranges covering Dalhousie-Chamba-Khajjiar-Dharamshala-Dharamkote. Can you suggest any additions/deletions in the trip or ceven corrections 🙂 Will be grateful for your help.
    Day 1 – Dalhousie
Take the overnight train from Delhi which will take you to Chakki Bank.
Chakki Bank is 4 kms from Pathankot. Take the bus from Pathankot to Dalhousie.
Enjoy the 2-3 hours drive to Dalhousie. Plan for two nights stay at Dalhousie.
After breakfast visit Satdhara, Panjphulla, Jandhrighat Palace, Subhash Bowli, Bara Pathar, Subhash Chownk and the last but not least Old Churches of Dalhousie. Keep the tour of Mall Road, GPO Dalhousie for the evening.
Day 2- Dalhousie – Chamba -Dalhousie
Early morning take the cab via Chamera Lake to Chamba. Return via Jott – Gette.
    Day 3 – Dalhousie – Khajjiar
Check out of your hotel in Dalhousie and book a cab to Khajjiar. Its 20 kms from Dalhousie. Visit Dain Kund enroute.
Kala Tope is on the way to Khajjiar. The 3-km route through dense pine forests from Lakkadmandi to Kala Tope is simply exhilarating. Do visit the Khajji Naga temple there.
    Over night stay in Khajjiar.
    Day 4 – Khajjiar – Dharamshala(McLeodGanj)
Check out from Khajjiar and proceed by Taxi to Dharamshala via Jot and Noorpur. Its a 6 hours drive from Khajjiar to McLeodganj.
Explore Mcleodganj 5 kms uphill from Dharamshala and then come back to check into your hotel in Dharamshala.
    Day 5 – McLeodGanj – Dharamkot-Triund Trek
Start early for Dharamkot about 8 kms from Dharamshala. Enjoy some good views of the Dhauladhar range from here. On the way to Triund don’t forget to visit St John’s Church in Forsyth Ganj. It is a monument from 1852.
Triund is 10 kms from McLeodganj. If needed stay overnight at the numerous government lodges available there and return the next day.
Buses and cabs are available from McLeodGanj to Triund which is 10kms away. Cabs charge 350 INR and drop you at Galu Devi. From there it is a 3 hr climb to Triund where you get a 360 degrees view of the Dhauladhar range.
    Day 6 – McLeodGanj
Start with Naddi Gaon and Dal Lake. Then go to Bhagsu Falls at a distance of 2 kms from Dharamshala in the afternoon. Autorickshaws are available from McLeodGanj. Also explore the Kangra Fort.
Visit Tsuglagkhang Complex, Temple Road in Mcleodganj 5 kms uphill from Dharamshala.
Day 7- Dharamshala – Chakki Bank
Catch the bus from Dharamshala to take you to Chakki Bank where you should arrive by 6 PM. It is a 4 hour journey so plan accordingly.
Board the train to New Delhi.

    • Shweta, itinerary is fine to me but rather making Dalhousie as base why not make khajjiar only as base. Atleast, while coming back from Chamba via Jotte route, stay at Khajjiar then because it will fall on the route only. Rest looks a good relaxed vacation. Yes, one more point, not sure if there are numerous, guess 1 or max 2 options at Triund.

  28. Hello Dheeraj,
I know your concern is genuine and hence thanks for the advice. Being a novice road traveler it is always wise to pay heed to more seasoned travelers like you.It has only been three years that we have been going on family road trips. Beginning from Rajasthan, I moved on to the Himalayas just last year (dalhousie, macleodganj, naddi, palampur and bir-billing). I want to graduate slowly into a month long trip to Ladakh, which i think will not be soon. Anyway I will get back to you for my Tirthan Valley trip, once everything is finalized to get a detailed help from you.
    really appreciate all your help,
    thanks,
    parag.

  29. Hi Dheeraj,
on second thoughts we are keeping an alternate plan for which we request UR help. my better half is keen to see kalatop, Sach Pass, Killar, udaipur, key long, Manali and back to Delhi in late Oct.
Kindly suggest a route along with distance.
    Regards,
    PARAG

      • Mr. Dheeraj,
        Regards,
Was led to think that it was doable by several blogs that i went through. i think i will stick to my earlier tirthan valley itinerary.
        thanks a lot,
        parag

        • Parag, I am not saying it is not doable, but thing is late October (infact early October itself) alot of High Himalayan passes starts to receive snowfall and thats where lies the risk. This one is one of the remotest passes and treacherous too. With family on the move, if things might go wrong then it goes very much worse in such situations. Just wanted to get you familiar with the risk 🙂

  30. Hey, I am planning to go on a 6 day trip to Dalhousie and Dharamshala. The plan that I have done is as follws –
Sunday – Reach Dalhousie and see around
    Monday – Visit Kalatope
Tuesday – Visit Khajjiar and Chamba
    Wednesday – Leave for Dharamshala
    Thursday – Dharamshala
Friday – Tour around Palampur and Kinnaur Valley
Saturday – Dharamshala and then leave for Delhi

My questions are as follows –
    1. Is this doable or should we add / subtract few things?
    2. Have I missed something that is a must see around here?
    3. Do you recommend any good hotels in these 2 places, esp Dalhousie?

    Super super thanks
    Snigdha

    • Hello Snigdha,

Though itinerary looks good but I will suggest you go to Chamba via Banikhet from Dalhousie visiting Chamera Lake on the way and then return via Jott – Gette which offers some awesome views. But, this way you will need a stay at Chamba which is worthwhile.

Dharamshala, by that I guess you mean McLeod Ganj as nothing much there in Dharamshala. Stay around, have walks in the woods to Bagsunaag. Kinnaur Valley is not there, guess you missed something here. Rather than a tour to Palampur I will advice a trek to Triund for some awesome views from Mcleod Ganj much worthwhile.

Try HPTDC properties which are nice and comfortable.

I hope this helps. Let me know incase you need more info. or have any queries or doubts.

      Regards
      Dheeraj Sharma

      • Hey, thanks a ton… Sorry meant Kangra valley instead of Kinnaur valley.

Is it not possible to do the Chamba circuit you have suggested and come back to Dalhousie in a day?

Also, how intensive is the Triund trek? Is it for the unfit?

        Thanks
        Snigdha

        • Hi Snigdha,

Sure, you can start early on Monday and go via Chamera Lake from Dalhousie to Chamba, explore a bit and then come back via Gette – Jot route and then stay either at Khajjiar or Kalatop FRH. Then, Tuesday you can spend whole day around Kalatop – Khajjiar and finally leave from there towards Dharamshala.

It is not that extensive as fairly the whole path is laid but yes takes about 3-3.5 Hrs to reach the top. So start early in the day, there are some magical views from the top.

          Regards
          Dheeraj Sharma
